The Sister Returns by Joanna Rees is the third novel in A Stitch in Time – a sweeping historical trilogy.
To have a future, she must confront her past . . .
It's 1929 and after running away from her family in Lancashire, becoming a dancer in London and having had a riotous time in Paris with her best friend Nancy, would-be fashion designer Vita Casey is living a much more sedate life in New York with her baby son, Bertie, far away from her evil brother, Clement and her nemesis, Edith.
When the disastrous events of the Wall Street crash change their destinies, Vita and Nancy flee to Los Angeles, where Nancy is determined to make it in the talkies. Schmoozing their way into the Hollywood elite, Vita is starting to think that can begin to fulfil her fashion ambitions. But when the love of her life, Archie is hired as a writer on Nancy's new movie, The Sister Returns and Clement exacts his ultimate revenge, Vita’s past and present collide.
She has no choice but to tell the truth and try and reclaim what is rightfully hers before it’s too late.
The Sister Returns is an absorbing, pacey tale that picks up right where The Hidden Wife left off, taking us back to 1929 and into the life of Anna Darton, aka Vita Casey, as she now heads to America to be part of her best friend’s wedding until the crash of the stock market sends all their plans upside down and they travel from New York to Hollywood where Nancy is determined to become an actress and where Vita’s past catches up to her finally sending this “runaway daughter” back home to Lancashire where she truly belongs.
The prose is rich and atmospheric. The characters are ambitious, capable, and resistant. And the plot is a compelling tale about life, loss, family, friendship, emotion, secrets, heartbreak, passion, danger, determination, glitz, glamour, old Hollywood, self-discovery, and love.
Overall, The Sister Returns is the third and final story in the A Stitch in Time trilogy and even though it’s a little bittersweet to say goodbye to the characters I’ve come to know and enjoy over these past three novels, it is nevertheless the perfect ending to a wonderful series that I highly recommend and will undoubtedly miss.
Thank you to Publishers Group Canada for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve just finished The Sister Returns by Joanna Rees, with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. I didn’t read the first two books in this series but it works as a standalone novel. We are taken to New York, Los Angeles and the UK, entering the diverse worlds of finance, movies, clothing design and manufacturing in the early 1900s.
It’s 1929 and after running away from her family in Lancashire, becoming a dancer in London and having a riotous time in Paris with her best friend Nancy, would-be fashion designer Vita Casey is now living a much more sedate life in New York with her baby son, far away from her evil brother, Clement, and her nemesis, Edith.

You’ll have to read the book to find out who gets what they wished for, and who goes home empty-handed – or worse. In summary, The Sister Returns is a fast-paced historical romance written by an author who knows how to keep you turning the pages.
It was gifted to me by Pan Macmillan in return for an honest review, as part of A Random Things Blog Tour.
I have just finished reading The Sister Returns remarkable, brilliant book , have loved reading the A Stitch In Time the 3rd book . firstly Vita is such an extraodinary person who does trust too many people , but in saying that she is a true friend to Nancy and others ,,Joanna Rees took us on a wonderful journey with this series ...........I know its only very early but I hope she is thinking about her next book because I cant wait to read it ....
Drama, a dysfunctional family, pursuit across the world - this is a novel full of incident and excitement. Some characters have agendas that are dangerous to others, others pursue their interests in comparative innocence. At the centre of the narrative is the remarkable Vita, a young woman who has experienced so much in England, Paris and now America, but retains her ambitions and resilience. This is the third book in a trilogy, “The Stitch In Time Series”; the first two being “The Runaway Daughter” and “The Hidden Wife”, but as I have only encountered this final novel I can confirm that it is easy to pick up the main strands of the story. This is because each character is introduced well, with some brief accounts of what has happened before in relation to the overall story. It also helps that each character is robust and consistent in their thoughts and actions. This is the case with the major players as well as the minor characters; the way Rees draws and handles each character is admirable, summing up their motivation in a few words. This is a huge achievement in terms of narrative and drama, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to read and review it.
The novel begins in 1929, after Vita has run away from her difficult family who run and own a Mill in Lancashire. She has been a dancer and generally had a good if scandalous time in Paris with her best friend Nancy. Vita's escape to New York while pregnant with her son Bertie had its moments, but Nancy’s family has welcomed her into their luxurious home and lifestyle. Vita has her ambitions even if lasting love seems to have evaded her; she has taken responsibility for designing Nancy’s wedding dress. The preparations for the wedding dominate the life of most people as Nancy at last seems to be ready to finally settle down with Nate, a suitable man for the wealthy young woman. Unfortunately this is in the weeks leading up to the financial crash, and among those who have invested heavily is Vita, who has been looking to succeed in her ambitions to have her own underwear business.
When everything goes wrong, the two young women and Bertie find themselves en route for Los Angeles, specifically for Hollywood. Nancy has ambitions to break into films as an actress, and Vita is keen to support her, especially when she gets a sense of the costumes, the sets and excitement inherent in the new and exciting movie business. Unfortunately people back in Lancashire still remember Vita in her original guise of Anna, and at least two people still feel resentment for her and are determined to take revenge and more. Her brother Clement is determined to get even, and although Edith has stolen much from her sister in law already, she becomes resolved to take action which will damage Vita and others in so many ways.
This is a vivid and big book in so many ways, with memorable characters and situations. It is mainly Vita’s story, but there are many others who are shown as active and resolute in their chosen paths. This is a book which features settings which are well described; New York at the height of its success and Prohibition, the beginnings of the Hollywood and the film industry, and life in Britain which is not immune from world wide events. This represents a lot of research, but there are no overwhelming passages of descriptions which would interrupt the narrative. This is an exciting book which definitely lingers in the mind, and drives onwards with fascinating details. I recommend this book and indeed this series to all those who enjoy big stories.
As I said I didn’t realise this was the final book in a trilogy, which is my fault for not checking. I did however love this book and following the story of Nancy and Vita. Both characters have a background that was not accepltable at he time, from living it up in the roaring twenties of Paris and London, dancing at the Folies Bergère, and living life to the full. Nancy comes from an entitled backgound, and in this book she is trying to conform to her families expectations, marrying a resrpctable man that she doesn’t love. The Wall Street Crash gives both her and Vita a way out, to travel to California and start a new life, Nancy to be an actress and Vita as costume designer. Vita is still running fom her family in England, and her life in Paris. She now has her son Bertie to think about and to try and protect, but her past soon catches uo with her. I think she was my favourite of the two female lead characters, she was the most grounded of the two, was supportive and caring towards Nancy and wanted to protect her son at any expense. In contrast to the likeable Nancy and Vita is Vita’s brother who is an odious character in my opinion with his wife Edith not being much better.
I actually have several books by Joanne Rees on my ever overflowing bookshelves that I am now going to push up my list of books to read. From the first page her writing gripped me, both her plot and her fantastic characters. I may have only read this one book, but I felt I knew Nancy and Vita, and became invested in their lives. I loved her descriptive prose, making me feel I was in the speakeasies with Nanvy and Vita, and part of the glamour of Hollywood; the costumes, the beautiful actresses, and the parties. I felt she. captured the zeitgeist of this important period in American history.
I really enjoyed The Sister Returns, the characters of Nancy and Vita were full of life, ambition and fun, definitely women I’d like to know. Yes, there were references to the events in the previous books that maybe I didn’ fully understand, but this was not a negative to me, in fact it has resulted in me buying the two previous books,The Runaway Daughter and The Hidden Wife which I can’t wait to read. The Sister Returns is a fast paced rollercoaster of a book, full of secrets, lies and plenty of drama, which grabbed my attention immediately.
Downton Abbey fans will devour Joanna Rees’ sumptuous, addictive and glamorous 1920s saga, The Sister Returns.
After the last couple of tumultuous years, aspiring fashion designer Vita Casey lives a quiet and sedate life in New York with her baby son, Bertie. After escaping the hell that was her home in Lancashire, becoming a dancer in London and getting up to all sorts of adventures in Paris with her best friend Nancy, Vita’s life might no longer be as exciting as it once was, but in New York she is at last free from her evil brother Clement and nemesis Edith. But Vita’s peaceful idyll in the Big Apple is about to come to a crashing halt and force her to confront ghosts from her past which continue to torture her no matter how far she goes…
The Wall Street Crash turns everybody’s world upside down including Vita’s and Nancy’s. Finding themselves unable to continue living in New York, they decide to make a fresh start in Los Angeles where Nancy is intent on making her dream of working in the talkies a reality. In the city of dreams and with film studios on her doorstep, Vita also hopes to make strides in her career as a designer and, at long last, it looks like all that she has worked so hard for is about to come true.
However, when Vita’s past and present collide in the most shocking and unexpected of ways, she finds herself forced to make an impossible choice: face up to her past or else risk losing everything she holds dear to her heart.
Joanna Rees’ The Sister Returns is a spellbinding saga that readers will not want to put down. Simmering with passion, secrets, lies and deception, The Sister Returns is an involving and engrossing historical tale with strong and spirited female characters that I absolutely loved.
Joanna Rees’ attention to detail and evocation of the period she is writing about is superb. Readers will feel as if they are living the story alongside Vita and Nancy. They will laugh and cry with them and they will not be able to stop themselves from hissing at the villains of the story – I know I did.
A fantastic read perfect for curling up with, Joanna Rees’ The Sister Returns will leave readers wanting more!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Sister Returns is the third book the the Stitch In Time Series. I have to say, I haven't read the previous books and this book stands alone marvellously. A historical fiction story that is set in the New York, Los Angeles and the U.K. a sweeping saga that takes us into the world's of movies, finance and much more, in the 1920's. I was captivated from the start.
We follow Vita and Nancy, as they break all traditional ways and travel to New York and Hollywood in order to make better lives for themselves. This alone was so inspirational to read about. The times they lived in made their choices so hard. Non conforming at that time wasn't looked upon lightly. These two women faced all that and stuck to their paths. I was behind these two straight away. Their strength, determination and downright fiestiness came across so vividly.
This was a story that immersed me in the era it played out in. Joanna Rees's research and attention to detail made me feel like I was living it alongside Vita and Nancy. Her characters came to life within the pages and it didn't take long for me to feel like I could know them, that's how invested I was.
The twenties have always interested me, just something about the way of life at that time has attracted me. This book fulfilled that and more. The glitz and glamour were fabulous. The storyline intrigued me with twists that made me want more, making this such a page turner for me.
If you, like me love a historical fiction saga with added sparkle, this is one to pick up.
The Sister Returns is the final book in the Stitch in Time series. It’s 1929 and Vita has arrived in New York. She has escaped her past and family in Lancashire, become a dancer in London and then travelled to Paris with her best friend Nancy with the hopes of becoming a fashion designer.
Life in New York, complete with baby Bertie, seems much more sedate. However, when the Wall Street crash hits both Vita and Nancy, like so many others, are badly affected. A spur of the moment decision sees them both flee to Los Angeles where Nancy is determined to become a film star.
They get off to a good start and the new contacts they meet also see Vita making headway on her designing dreams. However, when Archie her ex, and the love of her life, is hired as a writer on Nancy’s film, Vita’s past and her family catch up with her.
Will she be able to claim what is truly hers before it is too late?
I am so sad that this series has come to an end, I particularly loved the setting of Paris, New York and Hollywood and the glamorous eras that are portrayed.
I love this series. If you are a fan of historical fiction or family saga style books then I really recommend it.
Nancy and Vita are in New York with her son Bertie. She left her husband Irvine after he found out about Bertie. When Wall Street crashes Nancy and Vita head to LA Nancy wants to be an actress and is soon spotted and given a role in the film ‘The sister returns’ Vita wants to make her own way in New York as a fashion designer but difficult as she has Bertie. Until her luck she meets David Myers. Things seem to get better. Whilst at home in Darton Clement is still up to his old tricks and still looking for Vita so when they find out that Vita is in America, he is on the first ship out there to get his revenge. Whilst Edith finds out that Darton Mill is in debt and if she doesn’t do something and stop Clement from selling it, they will have nothing, so she sends someone to find Vita and get her shares from her. The sister returns are the third book in the ‘A Stitch in time’ series and another fabulous book from the author. I really enjoyed this and can’t wait for the next book.
This is the third in a trilogy A Stitch in Time and is a worthy last instalment. Exciting, captivating, suspenseful, it has it all. Great ending and leaves everything very neat and tidy. Historical fiction at its best capturing the lows of New York after the stock market crash to the heady golden years in Hollywood. Highly recommended read either a stand alone or part of the series.
In the final book of this excellent jam packed trilogy, we have crossed an ocean to New York. Vita and her baby Bertie have followed Nancy to America. Still always in Nancy’s shadow but living a very different life it seems that 1929 will be the year for them.
That is until the Wall Street Crash, action then moves to Los Angeles where Nancy is convinced she will be come a Hollywood starlet, and yet Vita is always in the background. However she is still noticed and her seamstress abilities are soon seen to be the best and she gets to work with beautiful gowns for beautiful people in a beautiful place.
However, Vita’s past is never far away and it seems that her brother Clement and his evil wife Edith are always just behind her. Clement’s adventures take him to America and mixing with the wrong sort of people but with one aim in mind, to deal the final blow to his sister.
Vita then finds herself face to face with another person from her past, another man she has been trying to forget but just can’t. The time is up for Vita and she must return home and face the shadow of Anna Darton but is home ready for this?
This series of books have been a joy to read and if you can indulge in all three in one go, you will be taken across continents, cities, eras and moments in time and have a real depth of feeling for the characters. Even if that depth of feeling is not a nice one!
For fans of historical fiction, the concept of Bright Young Things that has dominated 1920s history as well as the pressures of families, individuality and money. It has it all and is woven so tightly you are swept along with the story.
The last part of the trilogy and it was every bit as good as books one and two of a stitch in time. The chapters were short in all three books so it was easy to pick up and put down again. Definitely another good read !
Lieliska vasaras vai atvaļinājuma lasāmviela, kurā ir arī kolorīts Amerikas un Eiropas vēstures un sadzīves fons. Varētu likt vairāk nekā 4, bet 5 gluži nav
This is the last in a trilogy set in the 1920's following the adventures of Vita and her best friend Nancy from a #RunawayDaughter to #HiddenWife and finally a Returning Sister. Although I'd read the first in this series I haven't read the second but it didn't matter as it was easy to fill in the gaps and would also work just as well as a standalone. And whilst I loved catching up with the vibrant yet troubled characters, it's the insight into a fascinating period of time (the glamour, fashions, energy and parties) that truly captivated me. This is a great book and a great series by a great storyteller who can do it all from epic historical trilogies such as this to contemporary romcoms and even children's books.
