From the innermost sanctum of the Prime Minister's private offices among the Minaret-studded buildings of Putrajaya to streets filled with tear-gassed protestors in downtown Kuala Lumpur, Romen Bose, a former international correspondent and political communications consultant to then Prime Minister Najib Razak, provides a gripping and engaging true story of drama, intrigue, violence and incompetence that finally ended the rule of Malaysia's sixty-one year old Barisan Nasional Government in May 2018. With a front-row seat to the major controversies that hit the Najib Razak administration, Romen reveals for the first-time how the country's leadership reacted to the disappearance of MH370 and the still classified covert moves to retrieve the remains of Malaysian victims following the shooting down of MH17. 'Final Reckoning' also gives a blow-by-blow account of how the 1MDB scandal rocked the Government and the attempts by the country's top politicians and their advisers to contain and explain it away.
I was contemplating on how to write the review without sounding bias nor prejudice, and at the same time wanting it to be concise that can attract many
True to the blurb, Romen managed to capture my attention to read every single details in the book. It contains a lot of heavy information, political agenda precisely, to be digested yet the writing is quite breeze and very neat that makes it unputdownable 5🌟
I need to warn you that this book reveals a lot about Najib, his family, friends, colleagues & his government, as the author says so. If you strongly believe the other party, go ahead. But I am simply a curious Malaysian wanting to know two sides of a coin, which one is telling the truth...or lie?
Disclaimer, I was not at the front-row seat when those political turmoils happened thus this review is highly based on what I learnt & my thoughts about it with the knowledge I have as a Malaysian who follows the news & media, only sporadically
This book started off strong revealing the night Najib & BN fell. Like most Malaysians, I couldn't believe my eyes & ears when the result came out - is this true? Does the "kleptocracy" has finally ended? Well, little did I know as a mere citizen that this is the beginning of another power play in Malaysia (but ofc, I've heard rumours about this)
If you followed GE14 news, you'll remember that our social media is mostly flooded by Pakatan Harapan, giving out negative impressions towards Najib & the government. So having the thought that Malaysian wanted to be free of kleptomaniac & PH offers many young faces that fit to lead, I didn’t expect more! Author has listed down 8 factors-internal sabotage, old voting software & chaos at the headquarters. There's also stories BTS from the BN War Room, small meeting at Najib's residency and a tycoon that claimed he could get MPs from Sabah & Sarawak to become BN friendly as long as MA63 is implemented but in return, Najib needs to pay him about 3-5 millions! WHO IS THIS TYCOON??
Written by a Najib fanboy through and through. It's interesting to get a different viewpoint from an insider, but as a whole not that quite well-written.
Interesting to read about Malaysian politics from a person that had worked closely alongside Najib and had served the machine that had so badly failed the people.
