A comprehensive (but fun and easy-to-use) guide to accessing spirit guides, from an accomplished medium. Having a relationship with your spirit guides is common in spiritual circles—whether those are your ancestors, power animals, or just entities from the beyond. These could be the voices of the departed, but they could also be earth spirits or just an entity from a place you haven’t been yet. Whatever the source, veteran medium Catharine Allan guides readers through the question of what it means to speak to spirits, how to do it, and how to honor and protect your relationship with their powerful energies.
I went into this book curious but admittedly a little skeptical. I’ve always been interested in the idea of spirit guides and the possibility of receiving wisdom from beyond, but I never really knew where to start or if it was something only “special” people could do. Catharine Allan’s Vibes from the Other Side not only answered those questions for me but also made the whole idea of connecting with guides feel approachable, safe, and, surprisingly, fun.
One of the things I appreciated most is how Allan balances spiritual depth with a conversational, down to earth tone. She doesn’t drown the reader in complicated terminology or rigid rituals; instead, she gently walks you through what spirit communication might look like, how to recognize when guides are reaching out, and how to keep yourself grounded and protected in the process. The book feels like sitting down with a wise, slightly mischievous friend who just happens to have decades of experience as a medium.
What stood out for me was the range of “beings” she discusses. It isn’t just about ancestors or deceased loved ones (though those sections are beautifully written). She also delves into animal guides, earth spirits, and energies from realms we might not have even conceived of yet. This opened my mind in ways I didn’t expect, especially when she talks about how we tend to categorize these beings based on our own cultural or personal lenses. It made me rethink how I’ve dismissed certain subtle experiences in my own life.
Another highlight is the practical advice. Allan doesn’t just describe what guides are she gives clear suggestions on how to initiate a relationship with them. I particularly liked the exercises on listening and discernment, because it’s easy to second guess yourself when you’re trying to tune into something intangible. She also places strong emphasis on setting boundaries and protecting your energy, which gave me a lot of reassurance. This isn’t about blindly opening yourself up to whatever’s out there; it’s about building respectful, intentional connections.
What I also found refreshing was her humor. Spiritual books can sometimes be overly serious or heavy, but Allan manages to keep things light without trivializing the subject. Her stories and anecdotes make you feel less alone in the weirdness of it all, like, “Oh, okay, it’s not just me who has had strange moments that I couldn’t explain.”
By the end of the book, I felt like I not only had a better intellectual understanding of spirit guides but also an actual toolkit to start experimenting with communication myself. I’ve already tried some of her grounding exercises, and the results have been subtle but real I feel more tuned in to my intuition and less dismissive of those small nudges that show up in everyday life.
If you’re someone who’s curious about the spirit world but intimidated by the more esoteric or dogmatic texts out there, this book is a fantastic entry point. And if you’re already deep into spiritual practice, I think you’ll still find Allan’s perspective refreshing and her guidance practical.
Overall, Vibes from the Other Side is equal parts mystical and accessible. It doesn’t promise instant enlightenment, but it does open the door and show you how to walk through it safely and with an open heart. I’ll definitely be revisiting sections as I continue exploring this path.
This book includes various facets of the "other side." It's billed as a guide, though. Exercises herein, and there are few, might work for the author--a medium of over 20 years--but are too frustrating and ineffective for beginners like me. I can't simply sit, imagine light, welcome a spirit, and have it show up. Rather it takes years and nuanced teachings, practices, or perhaps gifts that most of us will never have.
The author lost my trust in discussing Starseeds - interdimensional aliens that exist among us. Factually and casually, she states that "they're from Plaeiades, Arcturus, or Orion." I'd have read this differently had she framed it: "This might sound crazy but..."
In Allan's conlusion, I finally read what resonated nicely for me: This journey can turn your life upside down. Simply learning about another world beyond this one, has been an emotional struggle. Curiosity keeps me on this path, yet the search for truly helpful documentation has been quite frustrating. I wanted realistic and practical tools to hone my skills at clairvoyance. I wanted this statement to have been made at the beginning, not ending, of the book.
I appreciate that the author addresses dark forces and de-mystifies, even disparages, "fairies." Yet she fails to offer remedies when confronted by such darkness. "Get out of there" doesn't actually work if we're living in a residence with these spirits. It's not easy for most people to simply relocate.
I will file some, or much, of these pieces of information. As a whole, it's not enough. Nor does it guide my journey in the manner I'd hoped it would. But if you're wanting to learn about the different potential elements of the other side and mediumship, it's worth your time.
I liked it. I started reading book in different stages of my life, but in a moment I was more awaken, it made so much sense and connection. The moment you let go of fear and trust yourself, magic happens. Believe in yourself more!
