As a puppetry enthusiast, I love seeing Puppets make a comeback.
Knowing what I know now about Bob Baker Marionette Theatre, this book inspired me to dive down the rabbit hole on YouTube and other ventures around marionettes.
The book regales us with the very high-high's of the hey-day of Bob's company, the start-up, the lowest points, the sense of community and of course, the strikingly beautiful and intricate marionettes. From Dancing flowers to clowns and animated musical instruments, the puppets themselves and the space in which they get to perform are stunning.
Bob's history and success, partially due to his career as a window display decorator (and a BIG name in the industry), is an endearing story of positivity, community, perseverance and love.
I want to deliberately make a field trip out to California, just to watch every show they do. It's incredible! Additionally, if you're someone who is in the arts industry and want to hear about a group who has a very big comeback story, this is one for you too. It may even inspire you to take your kids, your friends, your classmates or family to experience the magic of puppets.
As someone who equally loves puppets, books and history, this is one of those 5 star books! As someone who works in a library and has access to free resources every day, this book means that much to me THAT it is going on my to-own shelf.
