Que doesn't remember anything about his former life, but it was hard to question a voice that seemed capable of destroying him on a whim. Made to work as a dungeon core, a creation that can bend space and matter to his whim, he begins to embrace the universe around him. Including its many threats. Thrust into the middle of the politics of the galaxy around him and trying to understand the very issue of life itself, he will push himself to his limits and maybe even past them. The Hylos was on a normal patrol mission in their sector of space when they spotted something on their sensors that could be a potential life-changer for everyone that bears witness. Skyll’s father, the captain of the ship, decides to take them in to investigate. When things don't go exactly as planned with the emergence of an orc ship, Skyll is put into a leadership role that he was not expecting for many years. Are the rewards more than he can handle, or is he ready for his own ship and crew at the edge of the greatest power in the galaxy?
Interesting merge of spaceships and classic RPG type dungeons!
The premise for the dungeon in this book is a little different than others, as it starts out roughly the size of a small moon! The first challenge of the new dungeon, by a group specifically put together for that purpose, does not occur until near the end of the book, though there are other incursions, of course.
I do not want to give too much away and will just say it is in space and each person is in their own spaceship, which each fills one of the more standard RPG dungeon diving roles (tank, DPS, etc.)
The overarching story, backstory, characters, etc. are all also interesting! I am very much looking forward to reading the next book.
While I like the premise of the book, there are some places where information previously given (once, even about four pages ago) is completely ignored. Combined with several misuses of commas (those really get me) and some sentences that have to be read a couple times to extract meaning from, I have to give this book 3 stars, though it is a relatively unique take on a dungeon core novel.
