Caveat: I'm a very critical reader and I DNF books like it's my job. I often hate a lot of fantasy books because after three days, I cannot remember the FMC's name.
---

There are lots of things to like about this book. The premise, for one, is interesting. Even if you've read a lot of books about witches, "small medieval towns with arrogant rulers who war for no real reason", werewolves, and "virginal girls who are abused and then discover their inner strength," there's still a unique story here that was not immediately forgettable or irritating.

There is a large cast of female characters to love. They don't get nearly enough airtime. I would have loved to spend more time on the friendship and frictions between the women. It's rare to have such a large cast of female characters and I love that. In that particular way, this book very much reminded me of ACOTAR. We have the sister, the antagonist, the vampire, the witch, the other maidens... all who are different and memorable and have potential storylines that I'm keen to hear.

The bad: Where things fell apart is that the author had the characters in the exact same setting for (I guess, at least?) 60% of the book, which is just "wandering in the woods". There were some lines in the book that were exact duplications (search "thick rich tears" for instance). There are multiple scenes of "being in a freezing cold river." I don't know if there's some reasonable standard for how much time to spend in worldbuilding but this book definitely spends many pages describing mountains, trees, and dirt.

The FMC is frustrating. She fights when it doesn't make sense, she freezes when it doesn't make sense, she gets enraged over minor things, and lets big insults go by.

I have no idea why, but I was under the impression that this was a reverse harem. It isn't. It is a virginal girl who has sex with the first man who is near her. When she met a new man (a vampire), I was thrilled, because the book got more exciting.

**That being said**, there were so many things to like about it. It feels fresh and unique. I genuinely want to know what happens next. I'm in for the long haul!

If you like gore, violence and the constant threat of being viciously raped, then this is the book for you.
I got to about 2/3 through before my impatience for the story to actually go anywhere fizzled out.
I’d had enough by pg 244 and flicked to the end and wondered why I’d waisted my night reading something stupidity horrific.
DNF and I do not recommend.

When the author reached out to me to read and review this book I was pretty keen because it sounded like something I’d enjoy and and even if I didn’t, I would get to promote another Aussie author. Little did I know that I would freaking LOVE this book!

This book has a slow burn build with a fantastic amount of suspense that kept me intrigued until the end! The storyline was really well structured with really interesting creatures.

Saph is my favourite kind of female protagonist - sassy, rebellious and unyielding. I couldn’t help but root for her every step of the way. There was a slow burn romance that definitely paid off in the end.

I really enjoyed that the world building wasn’t inundating and just info dumping but it gave enough that I knew what was going on and will still have more to discover in the future books.

I’m conclusion, I have a book hangover and I need book two immediately!

"Seven Black Birds" by Andy Lee Barnes promised an intriguing premise but unfortunately fell short in execution. The characters, who could have been complex and engaging, instead come off as unlikable and flat. The protagonist, a main female character, is particularly disappointing. Despite being described with glowing accolades, her actions reveal her to be plain, naive, and often downright foolish. She falls in love with little to no basis, making her romantic choices feel unconvincing and unsatisfying.

One of the book's major issues is its repetitiveness. For over 60% of the story, readers are subjected to the same scenes and dialogues, which adds nothing new to the plot or character development. This redundancy makes the narrative feel stagnant and frustratingly slow.

Moreover, the storyline of the girls, who were raised in an extremely strict and brutal world just giving in the habits and practices of the "barbarian" is baffling. That scene with the 15-year-old girl was deeply disturbing. There was no justification for this part of the book to focus on her specifically; any of the other characters could have been involved. The entire aspect and subplot were simply revolting and entirely out of place.

Overall, "Seven Black Birds" is a disappointing read. Its characters lack depth and believability, the plot is repetitive and slow, and the romantic elements are poorly developed. This book had potential but ultimately failed to deliver an engaging and coherent story.

Really good but…

This story is really good but I couldn’t give a 5⭐️ rating in good conscious and I’ll tell you why.
The age gap is just appalling and I couldn’t get over. The girls are aged from 15yo to 18yo virgins none the less and the men are aged around 28/29yo.
I almost stop reading but tried to ignore so that I could get to the end as I’ve hard time dnf books.
Still gives me the ick when I think about. It actually makes me really angry that this is viewed as okay. I don’t care if is a fantasy book it doesn’t make right. This should’ve been YA book without the smut. You may say “oh but some books have fae that is really old with younger women” and I’ll say that the women are usually at least 20yo or older. A 15yo young girl having sex with a older dude and then getting pregnant and miscarrying is not okay. Or a 18yo losing her virginity to a 28yo not okay.
I would’ve given 6stars for story and the writing if wasn’t for the age gap.
And before anyone say I’m being naive, I understand YA do have intimate relations but as far as I know they are not having with men 28yo but with boys around their age, hopefully.
Just no, I extremely disappointed ewwww. Is beyond me a women writing young female adolescent having s*x with 30yo men.
And using the word “stream” to refer to a female’s private part is just wrong in so many ways 🤦🏻‍♀️

I couldn't even finish this. It was so riddled with errors, run on sentences, comma splices, etc. I can ignore errors in books with relative ease, but this book had them on every page and nearly every paragraph. I do not understand how it has so many good reviews as it was clearly unedited. The author used metaphors incorrectly all throughout the book as well.
Violence doesn't usually bother me but this was over the top. No one needs three+ paragraphs to describe a wound. I quit at 79% completion and I'm honestly surprised I made it that far. I kept thinking, "this story could be good if...", but I gave up after the plot fell apart.

I’m not sure how to rate this book. On one hand, I got sucked in so hard that I was barely able to put it down to sleep last night. On the other hand, the editing is atrocious - it’s seriously some of the worst I’ve ever seen. The grammar and punctuation are terrible, and it seems like random bits of info are just thrown in all willy nilly. I ended up skimming the majority of the book because I had to know what happened.

Also, I think we can all agree that constantly referring to sex as “sew his seeds in your streams” is cringeworthy.

First let me state this is the best book I have ever read!
If you like the work of Sarah J Maas this is a must and in my opinion better.
Saph lives in the kingdom of Guerra, where woman should bow down to men. They are beaten down both physically and emotionally and are not allowed to follow their dreams or do anything with their life but be breeders. Daughters are sold off for coin when when they come of age in what the villagers call the blessing of virgins.
On the night of the blessing, Krysland warriors from a neighbouring kingdom and known to be the most viscous of men, come to the village and manage to steal away 5 girls including Saph. They find themselves in more danger than what their horrendous existence at home had to offer. But unlike the other girls Saph is no damsel as she has been honing her skills as a fighter from a young age in secret and she will do whatever it takes to ensure her and the other girls escape as the Kryslands need the girls for something possibly darker and you are kept guessing all the way through as to what that could be.
Never has a book evoked so many emotions.
At one point I needed to put the book down and get tissues and breath. My chest hurt like there was a huge hole carved out. There were also times I cheered and times a roared at the injustice. Then action and suspense had my heart constantly racing.
The character development in particular in relation to the men is outstanding as for some you feel so much hatred and then those feelings slowly begin to change.
Honestly I can’t recommend this book enough! The vision of the story and the writing is perfection. The words packed so much feeling behind them. At one point
Saph delivered one of the most emotional heart breaking speeches to Tarkin the Krysland king and I use term speech lightly as it was an emotional smack down! I wanted to cheer for her selfless bravery but I fell apart.
Seriously this has the perfect balance of story, pace, characters, character growth, balance between inner monologue and action, suspense, love, hate and oh dark elements. Oh also add in vampires and werewolves ❤️ perfect cocktail.
5/5 doesn’t do this justice and Andy Lee Barnes I thank you for writing this and you gave me so much to look forward to in the next book. I think I will be in pain waiting for book 2 🤣
I’ve always been able to say ‘one’ of my favourite books if I have enjoyed. But never my absolute favourite with such conviction and confidence.
Everybody needs to read this now ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

it was a Great read ✨

• Obviously… I dropped a star because it was not a multiple point view.
• And I dropped another star as the whole story was clouded and seemingly clocked in the big-small “why- the girls was taken” which, that reveal, came right at the end. However I do give credit that by the end it made sense why the author had to push it that way.

Other than that two factors, it was an entertaining atmospheric read. Well written and a potential greater plot on the horizon. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cliffhanger was not that major however the story was great in rich detail, found family and secondary characters that gives this book depth, a patriarchal system that’s oppressive. traumatising situation & forced proximity and a true enemies-to-lovers without the “forced narrative” that constantly needs to be driven home… this story flowed well and one can clearly feel they are on opposing sides without the need for all the jibber jabber and a budding romance that felt natural as the story progressed. Here this trope was made clear through the energy of the plot, characters and story overall.

Was it not for those two pesky factors above— which if thought out better this author (which is new to me) would’ve had a killer start to this series… its no surprise to me this story is clearly one of those underrated (slipped through the cracks) and I guess that could be a factor.

I know of plenty books that is so hyped out here & written exactly in the style like this one and yet this one (underrated) is a far superior story plot. Way better than shall we say “quicksilver” yep I said it— far better and with much less erotic spice - hands down better. Who would’ve thought…?!?! It just goes to show, that, smut & steam should be an actual cherry 🍒 on the cake and not the darn whole cake 🎂 people!!! Dang… we ventured far from the beaten path when it comes to great stories while settling for New-Adult hormones & sexual shenanigans. It’s getting old and so are we… in the meantime, we wondering why we can’t find great stories readily anymore, we give, take-away, mediocre stories 5 stars while actually missing out on the TRUE 5 stars reads.

Anyhooo…

Let’s see if book two can take this tale even further. There is potential. Story is great.

Bloody hell was this good. The level of writing really took me by surprise as this was an ARC I picked up whilst reading a blurb. I hadn't picked it on based on clickbait or the fact it had a big hype.

It didn't disappoint. The main character Saph was one that I loved. She is highly developed and throughout the book her journey draws from her strength and her depth, rather than just her character development. Her acceptance of herself as she is, leads her to become a stronger character and I loved this about the book. Are we not stronger when we accept ourselves as what we are? In embracing who we are can we only become stronger? And what drives Saph is pure anger at the world and for some very good reason!

And throughout the story the main focus is Saph. Despite the growing presence of two male characters the focus is never taken off her. Both male characters are well written and their use intrigues me deeply. How will their use change as the story progresses. Really really really looking forward to the next book. I so hope someone gets their just deserts when Saph paints the town red.

The overal narrative was beautiful. There was enough description to give you ideas of how the world laid out. The storyline itself offered a few big twists which I didn't anticipate so points there. This book kept me enraptured simply because of its qualities. It didn't need to have me completely in suspense, in a constant push and pull to keep me hooked in. And that is what I enjoy mostly, as I know where I stand. The push and pull can be a bit sickening to read all the time.

If you have ever loved J.Maas books, or Jennifer Armentrout I'd highly recommend this book. I'd compare the author's writings to theirs. I'd aim this book at an adult level simply because there are sexual descriptions I wouldnt see in YA books which is common place for the authors I've compared this one to.

I received this book from the author via Voracious Readers for the pleasure of reading and leaving an honest review. A top book!

First, let me state this is the best book I have read this year!

Saph lives in the kingdom of Guerra, where women are ruled by men. They are beaten down both physically and emotionally and are nothing but breeding stock. All girls are sold off for money when they come of age which is just so darn young 14 or 15-year-old girls being sold to the highest bidder in what the villagers call the “blessing of virgins”.

On the night of the blessing Saph and other girls are paid for and taken. I won’t go into detail here because it’s best to find these things out for yourself.

Saph is the main character. She is a sassy, rebellious girl who isn’t like the other girls her age. She has been honing her skills as a fighter with the help of a young prince. She spent her days in the forest hunting.

The character development is spot on. I felt such hatred for the men who would take fists to these women, whether it be their fathers or husbands.

This book has heaps of action and suspense. It does have a LOT of violence but such is the nature of life at that time. And the violence is not just against women. I mean in a kingdom where evil kings, vampires, werewolves, and other creatures abound you have to expect violence.

Saph is amazing, she gives some of the best lines I’ve read in a book before, and she is so brave standing up to men twice or triple her size. Spunky doesn’t even cover just how she is!

This book is the perfect balance of story, pace, characters, growth of characters, inner monologues, action, suspense, oh man I can keep this list going but I believe you got the point. A truly perfect combination to make me go right out and grab book 2!

5 out of 5 does not give this book a high enough rating in my opinion! Outstanding work and I can’t wait to see where the author goes next!

Everybody needs to read this now! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to BookSirens for this eARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

PLEASE CHECK THE TWS BEFORE READING!!

This is the first book in a series and typically I don't enjoy book one as much as other books but with that's not the case with this. I really liked the worldbuilding and I thought the vlot was really good too. I liked most of the characters (there were a few that I wanted to hurt...really badly) but predominantly the characters were written really well. I loved the main character Saph, she's a kickass female and of course I love that! She does not want to confirm to the expectations that her village bestow upon females. They believe that the female should be domesticated and live for the purpose of their husbands and Saph is not about that life. She's built different. She can hunt, can fight and she handles a bow and arrow beautifully!

Unfortunately for her, Saph and a few other girls from the village find themselves sold to warriors of a neighbouring kingdom and thats where the story really kicks off. This is a world that has wolves, witches, elves, vampires and magic! It is also has my favourite trope...enemies to lovers! The only thing that I disliked about the book (apart from the characters that I wanted to hurt) was that it was an excruciatingly slow burn and that's not really my thing. But if you like that then this book is definitely for you! I cannot wait to read book two because what was that ending!! It had me feeling a certain kind of way and now I have to wait...patiently...which is something I am not! Overall I will give this 4/5.

If you like slooooow burn romance and some really dark paranormal/fantasy worlds. This is the book for you. Just a forewarning, the gore is vividly detailed.

1% omg the amount of synonyms being put in for simpler words is chaotic. It does not come across poetic of classic. It’s just word vomit.
Update: chaotic word choices have dropped significantly. THANK GOD!

37% one hell of a disturbing scene. So graphic and gory. Makes me squeamish, but it’s pulled me right into the book and I’m hooked!

47% the author can take my middle finger and SHOVE IT UP THIER A**!!!- making me cry like an inconsolable mess!!! How very dare you! I want off this ride. I’m not strong enough. It’s a deeply traumatising dark world. Extremely vivid gore. Very emotionally damaging.
I just want everyone to be happy… live a bright life with sunshine and rainbows… picnics filled with laughter, while merry children play. Why can’t we have that Andy Lee Barnes? WHY? Why you gotta hurt my heart like this? I’m grieving so deeply right now. I need a hug.

70% through with 7 this, 7 that, and 7 of those. Whole lotta 7’s and still no idea what’s going to happen. I’m loving it. Love not knowing who, what, when, where, and why!

100% yay queen! I knew I was gonna like-like you. Hearts in my eyes!
STILL NO IDEA OF WHATS WITH THE SEVENS!

On one hand with this story, I loved the writing and the world building. It seems like the Krysland folk are a lot less savage than their Guerra neighbours thought they were. I also 100% appreciated the slow burn romance in it. So much nicer to read something like that instead of instant infatuation.

But Saph just rubbed me the wrong way. I did enjoy that she was strong and independent, from the beginning she clearly did not belong in Guerra and she expressed that deeply. She loathed their customs and was not impressed to be forced into it.
Although the Krysland people did not really tell the girls why they had them, it seemed that from the beginning that the women in Krysland had more freedoms and were treated significantly better than those in Guerra, who were little more than chattel. Yet Saph was abrasive and defiant of them constantly and I wanted to reach in, shake her and say "stop, you've been given a second chance, take it!"

The twist was interesting though. I hope that Saph grows from her experiences and within the next book, she's a little less abrasive.

WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!

Let me start by saying this book was incredible from start to finish. I usually don’t like reading bigger books because they always seem to have too much filler. However, Seven Black Birds is so good at keeping every page interesting.

I absolutely adore Saph so much. Our FMC is such a bada$$ warrior and doesn’t take shit from anyone. She goes through so damn much in this book yet she always stands tall.

I have read other books by Andy and I love the way she writes. She’s the best author I’ve ever come across at writing those really graphic scenes. I swear, nobody can do it like her. The scenes and character dialogue was just beautifully written.

The storyline was amazing! So many shocks I didn’t see coming and that ending was fire! Like, are you kidding me? That was absolutely insane and I immediately need more!

I highly recommend picking up this book. You won’t regret it. If you love witches, vampires, elves, wolves, enemies to lovers, strong FMC, found friendships, self discovery, shocks and more you need to read this immediately.

Let me just say, holy moly!! As I sit here writing my review it is currently 10:24pm. I started this book last night around 9pm. I literally could not put the book down. Everything about this book is great. The slow burn, the storyline, the characters, the monsters, and the world.

This book was clearly very beautifully and well written. I am absolutely in love with everything about this book. Tonight and every night until this series is finished I will dream of this book and it will stay stuck in my head. I was not prepared for how great this book is and how hard I would fall in love with it!!

This book is a MUST READ!!! Move over ACOTAR, because you have some very strong competition!!!

And can we talk about the ending??? Because oh my gosh, what a cliff hanger!! What are you doing to me Andy?? I am pining after book 2 like a teenage boy pining after his first ever sexual experience!!!

I am desperate to find out what happens next and watch Saph grow!!!

I almost gave up on this book at the first chapter as the descriptions of scenes or places was so convoluted that I didn’t think I could read further. In places I wondered what the heck the meaning was

Glad I didn’t and had patience to wait for the story to begin and I loved it.

Saph the Fmc was bearable until the forbidden mountain and then I was so fed up with her always thinking in the worst of people when they are trying to help.

The mmc Fallon is good but I am soo team Karson but she is such a fool riled by fear it won’t happen. Fingers crossed I am wrong for book 2

This book was absolutely magnificent. I loved everything about it: the world, the characters, the plot, and the romance--Seriously, so so amazing.
This book was my number 1 read of 2022, and I can say it still holds top spot even a year later.
I've read the second book, When the Crows Cry, and it was even better.
This author is now on my must-read list.

Hooked is an understatement. I just couldn't put this down, so absorbed in the story and the characters. I kinda saw the twist coming at the end but it was still amazing and I love the author didn't hold back on anything! Best fantasy I've read in a long time!! Can't wait to get stuck into book two

Best book I have read so far on 2022!

A well written story isn't just read. It starts off as words, then becomes something alive in your head. It is felt. This is my first book by this author, but will not be the last!

This was by far the best fantasy book I read! The word building was spectacular, the plot was just breathtaking. The characters were so well written! You could feel their love for each other, the angst and hate.

Saph is such a bad ass heroin with a soul! Loved her!

I followed Saph's adventures eagerly, waiting with held breath to see what was next. Like all once upon a times, there was the damsel in distress, the creatures to befriend and the bold, brave hero to the rescue.

Criminally underrated

The storyline is great, it's easy to follow, great plot twists and some unexpectedly good friendships. I'm only worried that Fallon will be a Tamlin and I really don't want that. I'm off to read book 2 now.
