The Good Partner

Rate this book
A modern approach to relationshipsThis book is a transformative, do-it-yourself guide for anyone who wants to do better in love.It is not about working together with your partner on your issues (so if you're in a relationship, don't let your partner read it over your shoulder!). It's not about bringing out the toolkit and trying to 'fix' yourself (nor is it about pointing the finger at your partner!).It's about figuring out who you are - or become - when you're in a relationship. It's about knowing your strengths, triggers, reactions and vulnerabilities. It's about having tools you can use to cope with challenges, iron out your difficulties and work towards being content and at ease in your relationships, your own unique version of a Good Partner.

Any following my reviews will know that I've posting a LOT about toxic this, toxic, that, narcisists, abusive etc etc.

Soooo I thought I better read something a bit more positive, a bit more wholesome and found The Good Partner (I didn't even click that Karen Nimmo is a Kiwi and brings Tikanga values into the work).

Unfortunately because its productive and wholesome and all the nice things, there isn't actually a tonne to put into the review... It's definitely good, no life changing magic (and nor should you trust a book claiming to have life changing magic unless its Lord of the Rings). Yeah so that's that. Read it if you want to read it I guess :D

This was my fist self-help novel which was based around romantic relationships. Now let me say first and foremost, that I picked this up out of curiosity, not because I felt like I needed it. So with that in mind, I can't really comment about if this book 'worked' or not. However, what I can say is that I agree with the majority of comments in it about what makes a relationship strong.

At times the advice seemed a bit obvious, but again, perhaps that's coming from a place of relationship security. It's for this reason that I recommend this novel more to people who are new to a relationship or feel the need for some written guidance to get back to a healthy place.

Thank you to Harper Collins for sending me this novel to review. I promise that the gifting of this book has not, in any way, stopped me from sharing my true thoughts about the text.

I went into this book thinking it was going to be just about how to better your relationships but it starts right back at the beginning with yourself and your childhood. It goes pretty deep and it wasn't something I was expecting and maybe something I wanted to avoid but working through it was good for me.

I learned a lot about myself, my partner, our relationships and others around me. I think it is awesome in the sense that when explaining certain situations it states that its not just in intimate relationships but friendships and family too where these things can occur and how to help you and that relationship with that person grow or sometimes that its time to walk away.

The way it was written is so easy to read and not preachy at all like so many of these kinds of books can be. I also really enjoyed how after breaking things down she would add snippets of stories from clients and their situations because it helped me understand easier when its explained how it can play out and how to apply it myself.

Although I found some hard, I enjoyed the tests/quiz aspects in the book it helped me understand so much about myself and my partner that i didn't even realise. I underlined and highlighted a lot of this book and hope my partner will pick it up himself for himself atleast. I have never had so many dm's from people asking me questions about a book in my stories on ig.

I didn't even realise till there was a wee maori quote in the book near the end that this author is from Aotearoa (New Zealand) which to me made that even more awesome because I do feel different countries have different opinions on relationships. I found Nimmo's writing to be very similar to Dr Shefali Tsabary, so if you like her I think you would really enjoy this book.

I really think anyone could learn and take a lot away from this book and have recommended it to many already.

Gifted by Tandemcollective and HarperCollins.

Holy crap this book made me think! I love non-fic like these that make me think about my life/life outlook, and especially about the six different types of communication and the Seven Pillars of Relationships. This book was very round-about in the way it kept on bringing up HONESTY and COMMUNICATION, but in the end that is what makes a communication. I like how it was more about the emotional connection and how couples need to work together, rather than just about the initial stages of attraction. Definitely finding more books like this out there!

“After enlightenment, the laundry” – Zen proverb. How very fitting that after I finished this book, I had a huge pile of laundry I need to tackle

As you can tell from my tabs, I really resonated with this book! No relationship is perfect all the time, and my partner and I definitely squabble about the little stuff – who is on dishwasher duty tonight, who gets to change the kitty litter. The load-sharing pillar definitely spoke to me!

The Good Partner talked about issues and solutions in modern-day relationships. The pandemic was also talked about, which is very relevant and on-point. I really loved that the focus of the book was on things YOU can control, such as your own emotions and reactions to things. While obviously, a partnership takes two to tango, we can only change and have control of ourselves.

To be honest, the book has advice and information that we already know, deep down. However, with the humdrum and business of life, we often forget about these important things. How many times have you seen a couple forget to play, and have new adventures with each other?

Most of this book is appropriate for people in long term relationships, there are still some chapters that will benefit everyone regardless of their relationship status. I would highly recommend everyone to read at least the conflict skills and kindness chapters at some point

I really enjoyed this book. I think Nimmo offers a really strong foundation for how to build and maintain joyful relationships. I really enjoyed the real life examples and the kindness she offered to readers who have work to do themselves. I found her writing voice enjoyable and logical.

I would recommend this book to others and I am sure that I will circle back to reread it at some point in my future. I found it interesting how Nimmo's ideas prompted me to reflect on my own life - drawing parallels and better understanding myself. I think everyone will have different take aways from this book and I think in doing that it fulfils its purpose.

I’m someone who always enjoys reading quotes or peoples insights or anything really that has to do with relationships. Been in a relationship now for 21 years I know first hand that it’s never perfect and there is always room to improve.

I really enjoyed this book and as a couple we actually loved answering the questions together in the book. It’s just really honest and real advice which I valued.

A book packed with knowledge.
I wish they’d given a copy away in college so we all could be more educated in the area of relationships.
A must read for anybody wanting to start a relationship or struggling with the existing one.

Relationships 101 - basically a manual to healthy relationships. Really appreciates how it touches on emotional abuse, narcissistic-type abuse, the kinds of things I had to learn about in my 30s.

I don't review self help books as they are very subjective to the individual reader but here is what I have to say about The Good Patner.

This was an excellent read with a lot of good information. On the surface the concepts are simple and not new but the way author presents them makes them very accessible and easy to follow.

The whole reading experience was fantastic. The readalong plus the interactive nature of the book made it fun and interesting. I love the tests at the end of chapters. For me and my partner it became an enjoyable activity to do together.

As someone who has been in a long term relationship its sometimes easy to forget what's important when it comes to your partner. This book was a good way of reflect and learn.

I would highly recommend this to couples as well as for anyone who wants to self analyze before getting into a relationship. This is a great tool to learn about your strengths and limitations.
