Once The King of Nightmares, Ashe lost everything when he was betrayed. Released from prison, he's got one Stay Free. To make that happen he'll have to rescue the girl who stole his crown while saving the court he'd rather see burn. But he can't do it alone. He needs Callie.
Abused, neglected, and finally shunned by The Court of Light, Callie is done with court politics. It's just too damned bad Ashe doesn't care. He's arrogant, manipulative, and dangerous. Everything she's been taught to fear. It would be so easy to hate him, but the sadness in his gaze calls to her heart, and his touch awakens her own darkness. She has never wanted anyone more.
Callie is Ashe's darkest desire, but to earn his freedom and prevent the destruction of humanity, she must embrace the destiny that will keep them apart. But is the safety of the world worth losing the kind of love he's only dreamed of?
It was ok. I loved that this book had plenty of action. There were some things I wish were more apparent in the synopsis. For example, this book is set in the future. Also the guy on the cover does not look like how Ashe, the male lead, is described. I didn’t fully understand the world this book takes place in. How does Callie feed? It’s not really explained. I felt like I needed more history or background to understand how this world works. It definitely came off as original, but I just needed more. It also seemed that humans are treated badly, but again I didn’t quite understand how the humans and kyn interacted. Things are alluded to in some cases but not fully defined. The relationship itself between the two main characters was ok. Plenty of lust, but also Ashe was very supportive of Callie, which was nice. I’d recommend this book for those who have very specific tastes as to what they like in a story.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and my opinions are my own.
Overall I enjoyed this book. It is filled with action, romance, lust, and some humor. The writing is vivid and descriptive. Characters develop well. I loved the interaction and intense connection between Ashe and Callie. The plot was fast- paced and there were a few twists I didn’t see coming which is always pleasant.
My main complaint is that I wanted more definition of the different kyn races. The history, specific abilities, and interaction in the human world was not very clear. It felt brushed over to me. The whole Necropolis deliveries, etc is still jumbled for me - is it a city? Is it like Amazon? I would love to see further novels that build depth to the backgrounds of the kyn.
This was a great read and it kept my interest the entire book. I would recommend a journey into this world and hope to see future books soon in this series.
Thank you @Booksirens for the ARC and my views and opinions are honest and my own.
Loved this book! A fast moving, hot romance with a bad ass female lead. I binged this entire book in one day wanting to know what happened next. The lore created in the story is compelling and I definitely want to learn more about it. The main characters experience a good amount of growth, and I had a ton of fun watching the main protagonist come into her own.
I want to have more world building within this universe, so I can better understand where humans are in this future world, especially when it came to Callie’s friend’s bloodline.
Regardless, I still really enjoyed it. Pick up this book, you won’t regret it!
Dark paranormal romance can be over the top with the darkness and light on details, but with this one there was more than just the idea of being dark. There was the fact that out leading man was indeed dark and tortured. His soul (if fae have one) was in pain and despair. This once proud king, Ashe, had every reason in the world (his world and ours) to stay away from anything to do with females of any race or species. But with that all said he had one thing to do that involved a female and at the same time needed the help of another female. This for him was his only way to make sure things stayed the way he wanted.
Callie was a piece/key to the freedom on former king needed. Callie and Ashe were from opposing sides of thier world. She of the light. Him of the dark. Together they both could be so much more. Together the two of them could keep their world safe. Together they both completed the other. Having the story of Callie and Ashe unfold was entertaining. The was vivid world building and imaginative craftmanship placed on the details. I for one enjoyed getting more out of their story. I could only imaging them coming to life with audio.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the EARC in exchange for an honest review. This book had a bit of everything and I liked it plus being a book about fae what was there not to like! After Ashe is released from prison he searches and finds Callie who he needs to keep his freedom. They are the complete opposite of each other literally with him form the dark side and Callie from the light. You. Could feel the intense connection between Ashe and Callie that seemed to develop quite naturally. The plot twists were well done and overall it was easy to read…mostly.
The down side was that the world building although good did have some holes and could have been expanded more. There was some confusion about the history of the world and a few times I found myself going back to check whether I had missed something and some things did not make sense. Overall I did enjoy the book and anyone who loves paranormal romance will find that it is a great read.
I was so happy when I finally finished this book. It wasn't bad but I didn't think it was all that good either. The first issue was that this did not feel like book one in a series. There are so many references to things that happened in the past that are very important for the present, but we have no idea what actually happened. Eventually we get bits and pieces here and there, but it would have been sooo much better to have gotten at least a prequel that gives all this. There were too many random and weird things that happened, sometimes things just didn't make sense, and the characters were all over the place. The story itself was disjointed because you would be reading in one character's point of view, and then the next sentence it was somebody else's. There was no space, no divide, nothing to indicate this change. It even happened with their location. One minute we're all in a park, and then the very next sentence we're going into an apartment. When did we leave the park?! WHY did we leave?
I couldn't for a minute believe Callie's character. She went from being a paper pusher one day to a super powerful princess the next who can fight like a seasoned warrior and who can take control of an entire court of her fellow kyn with ease. And how does she do that you might ask? By dancing like a stripper and pouring out lust into the room. How....awesome? To be fair, she did still have her moments of believability when she would feel that it was all too much and she was not strong enough or knowledgeable enough.
Ashe was a strong male lead that I did not find myself swooning over. I love me a powerful lead with dominate tendencies, but I hated how he so easily submitted to Callie having authority over him. He's a king in his own right, damn it! I did love his attitude though. He was harsh, brutal, and blunt in his words and in his actions. Which seems to something I just don't get enough of and want more of. I wish we had gotten more of Ashe's nightmares too and of what his kingdom was like.
Ashe has been imprisoned for a century by a king he has no respect for and no loyalty towards. Which does make their interactions quite entertaining. In order to earn his freedom, Ashe has been tasked with making Callie work with him in order to free their high queen from the clutches of the light court. He terrifies her beyond reason the first time they meet, but she also can't help but lust after him. Because apparently that's how all paranormal stories must go nowadays. Ashe is the first to realize who Callie really is, which only complicates things between them. But the queen must be saved and he'll do what he must with who he must to rescue her. It's too bad they save one person just to lose another.
At around 50% or so, the story did get more interesting. Not enough to have me wanting more, but enough to not bore me. We meet a few really cool characters and get some interesting fights. Bad mother's get what they deserve and a certain court gets a new queen. I would have really liked to know what happened with Ashe and his own court at the end of everything...but all we get is another orgy.
Ok, this book is a little tricky to review. The reason for that is because the book has a few issues. Inherently, it’s not a bad book, but I believe it would be better if these things were addressed.
First of all, I felt a little disjointed towards the beginning of the storyline because the reader is presented to a very imaginative world, very description heavy creatures, and a very dense history that predates the events of this book, and this all came with a lack of any real explanation that would have made me feel a little more immersed in the story. I think there needs to be a novella or prequel that explains this history, the construction of the different courts, the political systems and a few other things within this series.
Following on from this, as most first novels in a series are, the first half of the book dragged on with descriptions and the limited explanations we get, and with a novella, the author could have left out a lot of filling in and focused more on this individual story.
Second issue, the romance element felt rushed. Half way through the book the two main characters are admitting they love each other. To me, it comes off as unrealistic, but I understand this to a degree because I know that this novel is a totally seperate story from the next with different characters as the MC’s.
Third issue, and probably the one that bugged me the most; the cover didn’t look anywhere near the description of the MC Male. I assume the reason for this is because the author and publishers didn’t want to deter readers by putting a blue fae with multiple piercings on the front cover, but going about it in this way isn’t it.
The characters themselves were interesting and engaging. I really enjoyed the banter that the multiple characters shared. It made the book fairly lighthearted even though they were dealing with a very tense and action packed political issue amongst the courts.
There were a few sex scenes in this book that were very spicy and graphic. There were points where I thought that maybe some of the scenes were a little unnecessary and just thrown into the plot for the sake of it, but I know some people turn up for a book like this specifically for that reason.
All in all, the book was ok. I didn’t dislike it, but it’s not a favourite of mine.
3 1/2 Caffeinated Stars TW: Mention of suicide, emotional abuse, death of a child, torture, talk of drinking and driving, threat of rape, murder
When Rachel approached me to read this advanced reader copy, I jumped at the chance! I wasn't sure what to expect, but I love paranormal books. I was extremely excited to jump in and see where this book took me. The one thing that I loved the most about this book was the world. Rachel knows how to make a mysterious world where faeries and supernatural beings exist. I also loved that she played with the various types of fae and didn't go the Tinkerbell route. I found myself enthralled by the world and the different creatures.
This book was also incredibly fast-paced. I have been struggling to read due to personal reasons, so I enjoyed that Sleeping with Shadows captured my attention. The storyline was exciting and kept me on my toes. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I will say, my most prominent issue with this book is that it should have been separated into two books. I would have loved to see this book fleshed out, flourished up and made into a series.
The characters were interesting though I never felt connected to them. Callie was a bit too brash and immature to me, and though Ashe was my favorite character, I still never felt connected to him. Even though I didn't feel connected to the characters, I did enjoy watching them interact and see the chemistry between them. I will say, the romance felt more lust-filled. I would have loved to see the more tender moments between Callie and Ashe throughout the book.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I am excited to see where Rachel goes in her career. I would recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy/paranormal books.
A fast-paced Magical, action-packed ball to the wall read that any fantasy lover will enjoy
When I first picked this up I figured it would be a solid read - nothing I would shun my adulting duties for mind you. It had a catchy blurb and that cover spoke to me. This started as I was expecting, I was still easily able to adult and read. Then suddenly a little after the first chapter, all chaos broke loose, and the idea of adulting for the rest of the day? GONE! I was not setting this down until I helped Ashe and Callie!
I'm sooooo not spoiling all the fantastic surprises and hidden Easter eggs that are contained within these pages Sleeping with Shadows has it all The myth The magic The enchantment This was why I fell in love with the fantasy genre!
"Great, she had to run through the woods to stop a fanged water horse from eating a giant bear. I miss the days when my life was ruled by sanity."
Callie is the perfect heroine! She is soft, cold, broken, strong, vicious, hungry, wanton, needy, and so much more! (It will all make sense as everything unravels - Have a little faith)
Ashe you smexy devil you have your own skeletons hiding in the shadows.
Shayne kind of sorta pissed me off toward the end Diana is an absolute blast The supporting cast was just as much a part of the story as our two main characters Each one vivid and enchanting in their own way The universe is dimensional takes place a bit over a 100 yrs in the future so you have the urban feel while still getting the enchanting world behind the veil
From sarcastic comedy to heart-pounding suspense tapered with a bit of romance this little bunch kept me on my toes with every turn of the page

2,5 stars.
I was really confused reading the first 5 chapters of this book. I felt like I started in book 2 of a series and was missing vital information for the story to make sense. In that regard the book could’ve build more on the world.
Just to give a quick summary. We are in the 22 century and the fae are out. One of the main characters is Ashe. He’s just been released from prison, where he spend nearly a century, after being betrayed. To keep his freedom he needs to infiltrate the enemy court (lightkyn) and rescue his friend, Diane, who was also betrayed and has also been a prisoner. To do so Ashe needs the help of Calle, a girl who is half lightkyn and half deathkyn (so is the court that has kept Ashe prisoner for a century).
Ashe starts by being a huge jerk to Calle, giving her no choice but to help him, but he stands up for her to the king. And they slowly develop feelings for each other. But a lot of stuff happens, bla bla bla, but in the end everyone lives happily ever after.
Like I said, the world building is horrible, but the story itself captured my interest, but only like halfway through. I liked how Calle became more confident and grew into her powers. She became a real badass! Ashe grew ‘softer’ and more settled, which really helped with the story.
There are a few parts I didn’t like, like the whole parent situation of Calle, but in the end, she rises above it, but way to kick a girl when she’s down!
All in all, it’s a nice book, however, it’s by far not my favorite, and I would only recommend it if someone doesn’t mind being confused the first chapters and they have the perseverance to continue reading.
A lot of reviews have complained that you need to sort of suss out for yourself after things get confusing that the book must be set in the future; however, “She tapped her keypad, bringing up her schedule. Only June 23, 2116, bounced around the blank screen.” is written on the first page of the second chapter. Unsure if that is an edit, but if it was then they missed editing a bunch of other stuff because the copy I got could use another rounds of edits. It's an ARC though so who knows.
I'm going to echo a few of the complaints I read in other reviews. Firstly, I'm not sure who the dude on the cover is, because it isn't one of our MCs since he is supposed to have black hair and blue skin. Secondly, this book reads as if there were previous books before it. It moves too quickly and doesn't flesh things out very well. This book could have been really good if things were explained better and if we weren't thrust into this ridiculous insta-lust right off the bat. There were other things that needed to be explored more, and if those and the relationship were given proper time, the book would have benefited significantly. Instead, we have our MC literally terrified of this guy one second and then wanting to bone him the next second, and it doesn't make any fucking sense.
All that bitching aside, there were portions of this book that were decent. There were several lusty bits that lusty bit lovers might enjoy. It was a quick read. I'm not interested in reading the next one because this one gave me no reason to be interested, but I don't regret reading this book, which I suppose isn't the most glowing recommendation, but here we are.
Ashe was once the King of Nightmares, known as the King Killer, the Kyn Assassin and the Sandman. He is feared amongst the kyn. When he is set free to rescue the Queen of the boodkyn Diana, he needs to enlist the help of a half-breed, whether she's willing or not.
Callasandra 'Callie' Lovel is not only lightkyn, she's also deathkyn. Her lightkyn mother abused her, undermining her at every turn. When Callie meets Ashe and comes to realize and accept her deathkyn nature she blooms as her powers grow.
This story is set in 2116, where the kyn have outed themselves to the humans but they still war on each other. Diana was betrayed and cursed the kyn, years later she's abducted by the lightkyn and the deathkyn King is determined to have her rescued, even if it means releasing the former King of Nightmares.
While there were a few jumpy and vague parts in the story, overall I loved this world and the various kyn. The acceptance and embracing of their nature and their willingness to do whatever it takes to rescue and avenge their own. Excellent first book in the series, I can't wait to find out more about the various kyn and their world.

This story was fantastic 😊 It’s my first read by Rachel Hailey, and certainly won’t be my last!! This book had a lot of action, adventure and romance!! There were a few twists, that you don’t see coming, and it was very hard for me to put the book down!! It very easily holds your attention!! Rachel did a fantastic job building this unique world, that you can picture in your mind. This book had amazing likable characters, especially Ashe ♥️ I felt like there was a lot of great chemistry between the two main characters, Ashe and Callie ♥️ There were also some very sensitive trigger warning issues, that were discussed in this book. I felt like the author handled those areas with care, but at the same time didn’t sugar coat it, because unfortunately it was a part of that world
I really hope there’s a book 2, because I definitely felt like more character backgrounds could be explored, and some of the things going on with the plot, could’ve used just a bit more detail. At times, it was just a little confusing during some parts. Hopefully more of that will come, if there’s a book 2 😊 I do highly recommend this book, though, because overall it was a fantastic read!!
This book was also incredibly fast-paced. The storyline was exciting and kept me on my toes. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I will say, my most prominent issue with this book is that it should have been separated into two books. I would have loved to see this book fleshed out, flourished up and made into a series.
The author flies through the plot and never really explains anything. You eventually figure it must be set in the future. There are basic links of her creatures to vampires and shifters, but again she doesn't explain anything and the names of races are so similar I kept getting confused. She doesn't explain about them, how they feed, if the sun hurts them, if they have powers and what they are. One of them is stuck in his shifter form with no explanation of why. She introduces characters and then they disappear most of the book or she brings some in at end and you wonder who they are and where they came from. The backstory for Ashe and Callie is non existent, the author just feeds bits and pieces in and leaves you with more questions.
That being said, I loved it from start to finish. The relationship between Callie and Ashe kept normal pacing as did the relationship growth. Couldn't put it down and have happily recommended it to others.
Thanks to Book Sirens and Rachel Hailey for the ARC in exchange for my unbiased review.
Let me start by saying the idea and storyline are great, but the execution of them are not. Then the author spends several chapters on things that never move the story along and I desperately wanted to skip chapters because of this. It really is a shame it wasn't better written and makes me want to avoid any other books from the author.
3.5/4⭐ I liked this book, however I didn't love it. This book was filled with action, likable characters and lust! Wow, there were definitely some hot scenese in here! The characters were definitely likable but I wanted more! We follow Callie, a lightkyn shunned by The Court if Light and Ashe, the once King of Nightmares on an adventure to prevent the destruction of the humanity. I wanted to know more about the before of these characters. What led them to here.
There was so much going on during the book, yet at the same time there wasn't enough. There was an incredible amount of detail, at times almost too much. I believe this book would have been better served split into two.
The overall plot of the book was great, but I feel like it jumped around sometimes. I would have loved more information on the different races. There definitely should have been more details explaining them. I kept getting confused between deathkyn and bloodkyn.
Overall the book was good, and I enjoyed it. I would love a prequel diving into the different races.

3 stars I received an ARc of this book thanks to Book Sirens and its author. I love Paranormal Romances, and this book ticked every box to make it a new favorite of mine.. Intriguing World - Check Different races and creatures - Check Great banter between characters - Check Steamy chemistry - Check Lots of action - Check However the execution of the overall story wasn't so great, I was left wondering about many of the different creatures that poppped up only to disappear without reason. There's was little explanation about our main character's powers or weaknesses or anything really.. I needed a bit more worldbuilding and backstory. It felt almost like an afterthought. The pacing was okay but I got confused at times, I did loved the humorous banter between many of the characters, it was truly funny and real.. even when they were threatening each other. And there was so much action that it will keep you entertained. It was an okay read for me but there was certain room for improvement in the details.
This book is spicy from beginning to end. Darkly delicious, the characters are fierce as only fae can be. We’re talking faerie wars, so if you don’t like violence, bow out of this one. Same goes for hot sex scenes and profanity. But that’s right up my alley. If you DO enjoy on-page sex paired with fight scenes that don’t quit, this is definitely worth the read.
I’ve given Sleeping with Shadows 4.5 stars. It would’ve been five stars, but I wish it was edited just a bit more carefully. My inner perfectionist picked up stray punctuation, and there were a couple of places the setting changed so fast I had a hard time figuring out where the characters were or how they’d gotten there. But don’t let that scare you off. It's a great story!
The banter alone is worth reading this book. The characters are lush and have the kind of depth I look for in a novel, with plot twists galore. I read Sleeping with Shadows in a couple of days, and highly recommend it to lovers of dark fantasy with high-heat romance and snarky banter.
Absolutely thrilled to have found exactly what I was looking for. First of all, I want Callie, Ashe, Daina and Mikhail on my side in any fight. I don’t care if it’s just a D&D battle; they’re there to fight and win and I am all for that. This book delivered on everything I have been dying to read. A kickass team, revenge over redemption for certain characters, daring rescues and epic fights mixed in and balanced alongside a budding and envious relationship; it’s been exactly what I’ve been craving and I loved every moment of it. The pace kept me intrigued. The plot twisted and turned down so many paths to keep my mind racing. I could genuinely see all of these characters and the actions while I went on this adventure with them. I would highly recommend it and I am most definitely keeping an eye on this series. It’s up there on my favorites list now.
This book deserves more than 5 stars! Hands down a fantastic read from a talented author!! Absolutely adore the characters as a hope she continues their stories!! Ashe is spectacular from the time you meet him and she leaves you wanting more. He may be the King of Nightmares but he is an absolute dream come true and a dedicated friend. This story made me laugh so hard in parts that my abs hurt. This author delivered more than expected with this book and I have to say that the words thank you aren't strong enough to show the appreciation and gratitude that I have for her and the world she created. Daina is that crazy friend everyone should have in their lives, and just what Callie needed when her life was changing.
Wow, I want to read more of this author's work. Rachel Hailey does a masterful job in building an intriguing new world. Callie is terrified when Ashe walks into her office, and makes it clear that she is going to help him complete his mission, no matter the cost to her. While this is definitely a romance between Callie and Ashe, all the characters in this book are well written, and convincing. The dialog is fast paced, engaging, and at times downright laugh out loud funny. This book has just about everything, you name it. Magic violence, supernatural creatures of many species, prison breaks, explosives, and best of all, sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. I thought this was a fantastic book, I couldn't put it down.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This book felt like it was the second or third book in a series. I say that because there was so much past history that was barely explained it didn’t fell like a book one should feel. Throughout the entire book important things happened off scene. It was strange. The storyline was mildly interesting but the descriptions of places and people were extremely vague. The character lacked depth and behaved bizarrely. The sex scenes seem like they were added as an afterthought. The storyline lacked continuity and I often felt confused about what had just happened. Overall, the story was mediocre and was in dire need of a good editor. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Review: Sleeping with Shadows by Rachel Hailey is a fast-paced paranormal romance that will take your breath away. I think this book would have been a bit more successful, had it been split up and fleshed out more. It is so fast paced, that things fly by and you’re left to figure it all out. This didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the novel. I think the world-building was great. I really enjoyed the relationship between Callie and Ashe. I think that growth drove the plot forward in a way. I enjoyed this and hope to see more from this author in the future! Rating: 4/5☆ *I received a free copy of this book from RABT Book Tours in exchange for an honest review on the blog tour. All opinions are my own and unbiased.*
I thank Netgalley for the free copy of this book. I am leaving my honest review.
I found this book to be moderately entertaining. It definitely could use editing. The plot tended to be choppy in places. The rapid love connection with the protagonist and one whom she initially branded a monster, defied credulity. Many of the relationships between characters did so.
One specific flaw really bothered me. The past tense of the verb "drag" is dragged, not "drug. " I am not the grammar police but tge use of this colloquialism was jarring to say the least.
All in all with editing and some revision, this would be an enjoyable read
An absolutely amazing read! From the first page until the last this book takes you on one wild ride. Callie was shunned by The Court of Light and now she’s being made to work with Ashe to find Daina. Their road is not an easy one. This book is amazingly written and the scenes are vividly described. It’s action packed, suspenseful, and filled with twists and turns, drama, steamy scenes and love. I absolutely adored Callie and Ashe, their banter, connection, and interactions. A definite must read and one I definitely recommend.
This was a good read, it was very fast paced in the sense it kind of skimmed over the plot. I love the connection between Callie and Ashe immediately off the bat it was heated. This book has very vivid descriptions. I do wish there was more background on the different kyns it makes some things very confusing for me. So some backstory would have been super helpful. The book does have a lot of action and is set in the future so that threw me off at first but kept me interested to read a fae novel incorporating the future. Over all I think this is a good read.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and I loved it. I love the characters and feel that the story was well written and easy to follow. Daina is by far my favorite character even if she was only a secondary character. The story follows Callie as she realizes that she is more powerful than she ever believed she could be. With the help of her love interest, Ashe, she founds out who she really is and where she belongs. I would love to read other stories by this author in the same world.
The term action-packed is very fitting for this one. I loved the fairy-tale / villain aspect of this one. It's a great trip back to our childhood, but with adult themes. The author takes a different approach in keeping the pace steady and constantly moving the plot, but not giving us a ton of information all at once in the beginning. We get snippets along the way. It worked, it was just a bit different. I loved both Callie and Ashe equally. They had a great connection that really came through the pages.
A great start to hopefully a new series. I found that this was a little slow to start, however once we got into the story it just flew by and before I knew it, it had ended. I felt that there could have been more of an introduction into the world at the beginning, however it was explained further in the story. I enjoyed the interactions between the characters and hope that they all have their stories told. A great mix of fae, fairy tale and future! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
