Death on Paradise Island – This is the first book in a wonderful series set in Fiji and starring Inspector Josefa Horseman a former Rugby & star and Sergeant Susila Singh. Joe and Susie are on their first case together. I loved this book and the characters. Learning about Fiji is just a bonus.
Death by Tradition - DI Joe Horseman is anxious to see his American girlfriend again as she comes to Fiji. However, a young activist is murdered and his time to spend with his girlfriend is cut into. This story is set in the remote area of Tanoa with no radio and traditional residents who are set in their ways.
Death Beyond the Limit - I was so excited for book 3 in this series and it’s definitely worth the wait. Joe Horseman is tasked with finding the identity of a head found in a shark and whether the victim was murdered. This is a great book and Joe learns a lot about maritime fishing and rules. Joe and Susie puzzle the way to the solution. The amount of research and knowledge in this book is immense. I just love a book where I learn things also. I hope there’s more Joe Horseman and Susie in the future!
Reads that entrance and make you wish you were there! I read these as separate books, which was brilliant! How lucky for the new reader that they are now in a boxset! Here are my reviews: Death on Paradise Island - I wish I was there! How great to read a story that is well written, interesting and with plenty of twists and turns, and also to have it set in such a wonderful location with plenty of interesting notes and information given to increase our knowledge of such a lovely place as Fiji. Death by Tradition - Absolutely fascinating - a cracking read! I didn't think a story could get much more interesting than the previous book in this series, but it has! By setting this book in a traditional village, we can find out about customs and behaviours not so relevant to the first book, which had been set in a more touristy setting. I found this book absolutely fascinating, with the author demonstrating her deep knowledge of Fiji, as well as her ability to write a cracking read! Death Beyond the Limit - Absolutely entrancing! I spent an entranced evening finding out how this plot played out - it was quite something, with several things in play at the same time, and the 'whodunit' not being too obvious! An excellent book, which I really enjoyed reading, as I have with all books in this series. I think the most important reason they are so good, apart from being well written, good characterisation, and the sheer amount of research that must have been done for this book in particular, but the thing that I reckon makes these different from the crowd is that this author really knows and understands Fiji. Bernadette has lived and worked there, as it says in her blurb, and it makes such a difference to this series - a world of difference from authors who do a minimum of research and write about somewhere they do not know nor understand. I love these books, each one in the series has, to my mind, been better than the one before - more complex, more exciting, and an excellent read. The hero of these books, Joe Horseman, is so well crafted that he seems to me to be a very real person. His sidekick, Susie Singh, is a great character and shows the author's understanding of the troubles a real Susie Singh would face. This author doesn't rush books out, but I look forward to each one and I am already looking forward to the next!
Each book in the series lets the reader get to know the main characters a bit more, as well as great development of characters unique to each individual story. Danger and intrigue keep the reader turning pages one after the other to get to the solution of the mysteries in each book.
I loved the way the author created the Fijian atmosphere in the books. You really felt that you were there. There was an Pacific vibe and simplicity to the way D.I. Horseman conducted his cases. Putting in the Rugby hero aspect also gave the stories a real Oceana feel. Highly recommended.
