His Loving Wife

I would do anything to protect my family. It’s my fault they’re in danger…

A year ago, someone broke into our home. He stood outside our bedroom, with our children asleep down the corridor, and knocked on the door.

But the worst moment came later, when I found out who had nearly destroyed my family, and why.

Now my husband has booked us a surprise vacation. In a beautiful cabin on the shore we will rest, talk, recover.

But I can’t relax. When I drive to the store, or stroll down the beach, I am always looking over my shoulder, my heart racing.

Because no matter how hard my husband tries to pretend, we both know it’s not over.

And I know he still doesn’t trust me…

An absolutely compelling psychological thriller that will make you question how well you know those around you—and how safe you ever are. Fans of The Girl on the Train, Behind Closed Doors and Gillian Flynn will be completely hooked by His Loving Wife.

His Loving Wife is a very dark and disturbing psychological thriller about family and the lengths one will go to protect their loved ones. The story is told from different timelines. There is what happened immediately after a home invasion and how life changed a year later. I thought I knew where the story was going, but it took an unexpected, unsettling and shocking twist. Describing it as sinister is putting it mildly. Miranda Smith definitely didn’t disappoint. The plot is fast paced and suspenseful from start to finish. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.

His Loving Wife by Miranda Smith is a psychological thriller. The story in this one is told in two timelines, the first being a year in the past and then a current time with the flashes back to the past slowly catching up to the current.

One year ago Kate was happily married to Andrew and the couple had two children together. One night when the family was sleeping peacefully Kate hears a noise and thinks someone may be in the house. Waking her husband Kate is certain someone is outside their door but Andrew freezes and does nothing while Kate confronts the intruder thinking only of their children’s safety.

Now the family is trying their best to put that horrific night behind them after all that had happened. Andrew has booked the whole family on a vacation at the beach and then surprises them with a longer trip than they had originally thought. But Kate still cannot forget that night a year ago when Andrew wasn’t there for their family.

His Loving Wife by Miranda Smith was somewhat a slow building psychological thriller with the way it jumped a year from the opening break in and then flashes back to give more details of that night. The characters were were not necessarily likable but in that way of building suspicion as I didn’t dislike them either. As the book went on there are a few twists and turns but the wrap up wasn’t totally a surprise to me so overall I rated this one at three and a half stars.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Kate's life was changed forever when her old college boyfriend Paul broke into her house with the intent to harm her and her family. Now a year later, Paul is being released. To take her mind off of things, Kate's husband Andrew has booked a surprise family vacation at a gorgeous beachside cabin. It should be a relaxing two weeks but Kate quickly begins to suspect that Paul may have followed them and that they are all in danger...

This was a suspenseful, unputdownable thriller by Miranda Smith. And when I say unputdownable, I mean it. Once I started this book I could not stop reading it. The plot, the isolated beach setting, and the tension-filled atmosphere all had me gripped until the ending. A particular high-profile American murder case comes to mind when I think of the shocking twist and I wonder if the author got some inspiration from that case.
All in all, a very captivating read. This is my second book by this author and I really enjoyed her writing and plot twists. Looking forward to more books by her.

This book started really strong and promising. However, it wasn’t able to keep the momentum right through to the end.

One night, an intruder broke into the home of Kate and Andrew. Their lives was never the same after the attack. In hopes of repairing the damage in their relationship, the family went on a vacation, little do they know that a more sinister tragedy is just around the corner.

Honestly, I was thrilled right up the start, the scenes were intense and scary, I could literally feel the terror in each chapters, I was hoping it would stay that way until the climax but as the story went on, I lost interest halfway. The narrative went in circles, the characters became just flat out boring and annoying and the big reveal wasn’t really shocking or fitting.

I was thinking of a different twist to the end of the story or a different puzzle piece to make everything more powerful but there was no great shakes to slake my expectations.

I’ll give three stars because the onset was really good. Maybe you’ll like this better than I did.

To give any hint of this story would be to give the game away, and that would be a shame as, for me, this is probably the book I thought had worked out but really hadn’t 2021’, the book starts and the story pans out and as a psychological thriller lover I knew, 100% where it was going, I almost sighed and then, whooooosh it takes an unbelievable turn and you are in the midst of something very dark indeed
Very well written, good solid characters, not too in your face nor too pedestrian and a great setting make for a really good but very unsettling read

9/10
5 Stars ( has to be for how the book fooled me )

Despite all the glowing reviews, I just wasn’t impressed that much. Yes, what happened to the family was absolutely horrible. Nobody is prepared for something like that. Not Kate and her husband Andrew, and especially not Willow and Noah. Recovery from such an ordeal can take a long time. There were some surprises in the story but for the most part it dragged along. Other thing I could see coming a mile away. What’s so special about having a two week holiday? Why keep pointing that out? I didn’t think Kate and Andrew very strong characters. I have no picture in my mind of either of them; me, I would have left Andrew long ago, despite the strong connection. He may be good as a friend, but I thought him a quite weak husband. Much later in the book another man is introduced, and although he turns out to be very bad and dangerous, as a character he stood out.
It's not a bad book; it’s just not entirely to my taste.

When their home was broken into a year ago, Kate and Andrew had no idea that would be the end for their family. The story has a dual timeline: the present day and one year ago that's told in flashbacks. Kate, Andrew and their children, Willow and Noah are still recovering from the break-in. The pace is slow for about 70% of the book, then the pace picks up speed. There's plenty of twists but I did guess where this story was going.

Wow! His Living Wife was a thrilling page turner from beginning to end!

After a family‘s house was broken into one night by a masked man rattling a bedroom doorknob and threatening harm, Kate, Andrew, and their two children, Willow and Noah survived the incident, but were all effected by the tragedy and were living in fear . Each of them having reacted in a different way to this trauma, they needed counseling. The marriage started to crumble under the deep stress, most especially when it’s discovered who that it was that broke in!

The story goes back and forth, tracing a year to present time. Will this family be ok? Can they survive what happened? Why did it happen?
Love and trust are on the line, communication is suffering, and still worse - the nightmare doesn’t seem to be over. Something is definitely not right, it feels like danger is still there!

With twists and surprises, along with an ending that WAS surprising The Loving Wife is well written, exciting, realistic, and fast paced.

A man broke into Andrew and Kate's house an year ago. One year has passed since that incident happened and none of the family members has moved on. Plus the man who broke into their house might or might not be someone Kate knew in the past. And the worst thing is he's gonna be released from jail.

Kate will do everything to protect her family from bring destroyed. I liked her character a lot. I was so excited to read this book. I'm not a big fan of thrillers but this book entertained me the entire time. And the ending- I loved it so much.

3.5 stars. This book started strong but it fell flat after that. It picked up the pace at the last quarter of the book.

It was kind of predictable. I don't mind predictable but it was repetitive at times that I was urging the author to move on.

I've read some amazing thrillers lately so this book didn't impress me much.

We meet Andrew, Kate, Willow, and Noah who were the victims of a home invasion and whose effects are still with them.

When the police find out who the intruder was and that he was someone Kate dated in college, her husband raises questions about why Kate never told him that her old college boyfriend had been stalking her and that she was meeting with him before the invasion.

Is this the reason he invaded their home? Did he want Kate back?

To help with the trauma, a year later the family takes a surprise vacation as they try to forget that night, but no one will ever forget it.

We follow the family in the present and months before.

Andrew and Kate seem more distant than usual, and the vacation didn't seem to be helping.

Andrew is always on his computer talking to his friends and Kate can’t get over the fact that she still thinks the intruder is there at the beach and that Andrew still doesn’t believe that she and the intruder didn’t have an affair.

On top of everything, they have to deal with a moody teenager, a son who is timid, and secrets.

You can just feel the underlying tension everywhere. Ms. Smith did a great job with having that tension felt.

HIS LOVING WIFE has twists, turns, lies, and surprises.

The ending is a HUGE surprise. 4/5

His Loving Wife was such a tense read that had me nearing the edge of my seat the further into it I got. The beginning, the middle and the ending had me well and truly hooked and I couldn't put it down. I never envisioned the dark and twisted turn this story would take and my heart was in my mouth for the last part of the book especially. I would love to see this on the big screen, it would make for some compulsive and scary viewing. Another brilliant read by the author.

Though beautifully written, His loving wife is a slow paced psychological thriller.

A year ago, Kate’s ex boyfriend Paul broke into her home one night with the aim of causing harm to her family. However, they survived but the tragedy has left Kate and her family in fear forever. Now a year later, Kate’s husband has planned a beach house vacation, so he can protect his family from Paul, who has been released and also to spend some time together as a family without fear. Will Andrew be able to protect his family and will Kate be able to relax? Or will this holiday give rise to more dangers, fears and loss?

Had the author focused on one story, this book would have had more potential. For me, the starting chapters of the story did not connect with the climax of the story. The latter half could have been a entirely different book with a potentially greater topic where Andrew was dealing with his mental health issue in which he was unable to protect his family. The characters also felt a bit weak. I would have liked to see more of Paul’s involvement in this story. The book alternate between present day and a year age which was okay.

Will I recommend this book?
Why not! It’s a nice book except for the fact that it did not work for me much.

I often find myself wondering what I would do in various emergency situations - including a home invasion. Will I freeze? Will I fight? Sacrifice myself for my family? Am I strong enough to win the battle?
A year ago, Willow and Andrew experienced a home invasion. Willow told her children to get out of the house to safety while catching the intruder off guard. This decision not only ensure the safety of her children, but also Willow was able to scare the intruder into leaving.
Months later they learn the intruder's identity - Paul, Willow's ex from college. Willow takes on the guilt of starting the chain of events - Paul and Willow ran into each other weeks before the invasion.
Andrew deals with the guilt of freezing - seeking an online community to cope.
The family goes on a beach vacation - yet Willow can't help feeling something weird is going on.
This plot definitely held my attention - the dynamics between parents and children, the impact of such a stressful event on a healthy marriage. Lots of positivity regarding seeking therapy for all members of the family.

This was an intense read that kept me turning the pages well after bedtime!
A year ago, Kate opened her bedroom door to discover a man in their home, Paul! He was an old flame from Kate’s past and whom Andrew her husband also knew. Paul had been in prison awaiting trial but the family have been told that he has been released. Kate is scared he will come back.
Andrew decides to book a surprise family vacation to keep their minds off it, but Kate is still feeling uneasy, especially when she thinks she has spotted Paul, she is on edge constantly, watching her children even more closely than normal and what should be a relaxing vacation turns into something terrifying.
Wow, this was a book I could not put down, it had me thoroughly invested.
I liked the characters, and I can honestly say parts of the story were actually quite scary. It was a brilliant twisty thriller in which you really could not guess what would happen next.

One of the best psychological/domestic thrillers that I have read this year, this was one scary, intense ride.

A year after a home invasion left them emotionally scarred, Andrew and Kate Brooks decide that a vacation would help them and their kids Willow and Noah to heal and bond as a family. While on holiday, Kate can't shake off the niggling feeling that they are being watched, especially since she knows that Paul, her delusional ex-boyfriend and the man who intruded their home has been released on bail. Soon Kate realises that her fears were right and that their dream vacation has just turned into their worst nightmare.

The plot had me hooked right from the very first chapter. The narrative style that alternated between the past and the present helped to build up the suspense and also to join the dots in what was a twisty, elaborate scheme to trap the Brooks'. And that plot twist was simply mind-blowing. I loved the climax due to the sheer terror it induced.

Overall, a nerve-wracking, unputdownable read. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a neat psychological thriller that I found to be extremely compelling. Kate wakes one night to find an intruder in her and her family's home. A year later, they are all still trying to come to terms with the horrific event and Kate's husband, Andrew suggests a holiday. So off they go...

His Loving Wife was certainly a compelling read! Told in two timelines, the time of the incident and afterwards using flashbacks, and now, it is a captivating, warped and sinister tale. The conclusion, which is well worth the wait, is shocking. Very highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

A year ago, Kate’s family experienced a terrifying home invasion. It’s not been an easy year, but everyone seems to be recovering. Except for Kate. Kate knew the intruder and feels responsible. She’s still hypervigilant and sees him everywhere, even on the vacation that her husband surprised the family with.
His Loving Wife was all around meh for me. It was described as a “completely unputdownable psychological thriller full of suspense,” but for the first 75%, I was sure that it was a family drama rather than a suspense. Even when the “thrilling” part came in, I still wasn’t invested in the story.

Thanksgiving 2022 Read #4

I was hooked from the first chapter. A family has just suffered a horrific break in and attack and they're trying to wade through the why, how, and moving on. Turns out there's a lot more behind the why . . .

I had no idea where things were headed before the fish incident. Then I got really excited and more deeply involved. The Second Chances group became my main focus of disturbance behind all the strange behavior. I mean, who are those people? And who spends that much time with a group?

And then BOOM! The big twist. I wanted to scream at Kate and hit her with her own book!

Riveting. I loved this thrilling mystery. Kept me on my toes.

A good read.
Kate and Andrew were living peacefully along with their children, Noah and Willow until one night when someone broke into their house and their lives changed forever. Upon investigation, the man was identified as Paul, a college friend of Andrew, whom Kate was dating with before she started her relationship with Andrew.
To overcome that night's fear and to put their family together, Andrew booked a beach house on the shore and they hope that they'd left behind evrything.
But soon sinister things started again, Kate had the feeling that she'd seen Paul, someone put a jammer in their house etc. Who' was doing that and why?
Told from four POV's, two are of Kate's ( present and past ), one of Andrew and one is of Vincent, this story was a fun read until 85% but after that it didn't work for me. That twist didn't add another layer of suspense. I personally don't think that it was required.
Characters were ok. Kate and I were main characters. Although children hadn't much to do in the book.
What I Liked? :-
1 Setting and plot.
2 Narration.
What I didn't like? :-
1 Last chapters and ending.
2 Don't think that Vincent's POV was necessary. It could be told from Andrew's POV.
If you're a fan of Miranda's books then you definitely go for it but don't expect a blasting ending from this book otherwise you'll be disappointed.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advanced copy of this psychological thriller.

His Loving Wife was a gripping read. From the first page, we're thrown into the drama of Kate's family facing an intruder in her house. The book takes part both in the past as they deal with the aftermath of this attack and while on holiday a year later, trying to rebuild the family.
As the story unfolds we learn what happened and why it took place, along with how this has impacted all members of the family. It also becomes clear that although the initial attack is over, there is still much that the family has to deal with.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I did struggle slightly with a couple of Kate's decisions or the way that she reacted to things. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but there is an incident that takes place that particularly impacts their son Noah and Kate herself. Personally, after something like that there's no chance that I would be repeating the activity or allowing any family members to do so. At least not in the near future. Kate does seem to be a little slow in picking up some of the signs as to what is going on. That might be understandable when you are so close to it all, but it left me wanting to reach into the book and give her a shake, surely she could see all wasn't well!
This was a great read and one that I would highly recommend.

When I saw this cover and title on NetGalley, I was immediately intrigued. I love domestic psychological thrillers!!! If you do also, you may enjoy this fast-paced read!

I loved the twists and turns of this one! It definitely kept my interest throughout the novel. This is the first novel I have read by this author, and I am interested to see what else she comes out with.

Short synopsis:
A year ago, someone broke into Kate and Andrew's home... and the person who did it was someone very close to our main character, Kate. Since the traumatic incident, Kate has developed anxiety and feels that she is always looking over her shoulder. With their marriage on the rocks, Andrew books a surprise vacation to a beautiful cabin to help them relax and heal; but upon their arrival, Kate finds that she can't relax, because no matter how hard they try to deny it.... what happened to them in the past is far from over.

My thoughts/reason for the rating (without spoilers):
Here's the thing: I predicted the outcome. I did not predict all of the details that unfolded, precisely, but I wasn't completely shocked; HOWEVER, if you are new to the thriller genre, this one may throw you for a loop! Ultimately, I found the ending a bit disappointing and kind of disturbing... mostly because it could actually happen.

Thank you so much, NetGalley, for the eARC!!

FEAR. TRAUMA. SILENCE.

The Author has described the series of events in the dates stamped timelines, then & now.

A year ago, a home invasion was happened with the lovely couple. Kate was a college professor & writer. She is wife of Andrew & mother of two children i.e. Willow & Noah. Willow was 15 years old & Noah was 9 years old when they had witnessed an intruder at home in the midnight which created trauma & fear afterwards.

A year later, Andrew went with his family on a vacation to the beach. Cops had informed Kate & Andrew to take care of the family because an intruder who had visited last year is none other than "Paul Gunter". When Dr. Marshal initiates this news, Kate is trying to conquer her fear. She is not feeling sqfe, on her vacation also. To overcome from the past happenings, all 4 have joined the counseling sessions. The first half plot was a bit slow, but post second half the suspense of events was page turner & it keep me hooked till the climax of plot.

One of the best psychological thrillers I have read. This is my first novel from @mirandasmith Author. I would recommend this book to the one who loves to read thrillers.

What do you think what had happened with Kate & Andrew? How did Kate cope up from all? Did Andrew really love Kate from bottom of the heart? Does Paul want revenge from Kate?
