Read this as part of a work book club. We had a series of Team meetings where the author joined us and spoke more on the topic. She is very inspirational, very genuine and a lot of what she teaches is very helpful.
I can't say that this was a remarkable book. It was extremely concise and covered a lot of ground that has been covered elsewhere by others. That's the bad news.
The good news is that it is a good introduction to stress management through the eyes of a licensed clinical psychologist. If you have never been to the point of seeing a psychologist or asking for help in how to deal with stress, this is actually a pretty good starting point.
Because everyone is on a different journey, it's difficult to give this a proper score. If you are not at all familiar with this topic and are looking for a barebones minimalist approach, you may rate this pretty high. If you have been the victim of trauma and have spent years under the care of a psychologist, this might just serve as a refresher course with little new information and a lower score.
One other thing about this book. One thing that's a bit disappointing, actually, is that it didn't live up to my expectations. I mean, Dr. E is a brand. You see her on television. She makes public speaking appearances. She's become a celebrity, so therefore, I expected to pick up a well written book. This failed to meet basic expectations set by others in the industry. If you've read anything by Dr. James Dobson, Gary Smalley or Myles Munroe, you're pretty familiar with the format. Make a point, throw a couple of personal anecdotes from your practice or your family, drive home a key example, and finish with a few rhetorical questions to either use as follow up, or to lead to the next topic covered. This one fits the model. Unfortunately, she didn't apply it to her writing too well. She makes good points and tells some good stories, but we get too many "aside" comments that she sets off in parentheses. We get too many areas where she gets too repetitive about stuff that isn't important to the reader or listener.
Overall, it was an average book, worthy of an average score.
I really benefitted from this book, and I’m sharing it with my children to help them too. Anyone could benefit from reading it, especially in this time of such stress. The author is very relatable and clearly explains her research and techniques to help minimize bad stress and maximize good stress or passion. I know she has helped a lot of high performing people, so it’s great to be able to access her advice here. Excellent read and one to refer to again and again!
Dr. E's most recent book offers a perfect roadmap to both understand and manage stress. In this book, she has normalized the conversation around stress and created an incredibly accessible language to navigate this common and very human experience. This book should be in every therapist's bookshelf. ============ Disclosure: I am a part of IOM, the publishing company for this book, and my review is my own.
This book was given to me by my boss when she returned from a conference were Dr. Lombardo spoke. One of the reasons why I loved this book was because it's short but doesn't play around. Lombardo gets right to the point of the matter and has very little filler in her writing like some self improvement books have. The topics she discuss are put in such a simplistic matter that it makes it easy to understand for anyone and I really appreciated that.
This is a quick and easy read with lots of helpful information. Many of the concepts I’ve heard before but the author has framed it differently.
I like how she explains difficult concepts about brain functioning in easy to understand metaphors like the path in a field of grass that is easier to travel. And I like the catchphrase of “transforming for stress into success.”
