Puede ser que los años no pasen en balde para algunas historias y que, como lectora, me cueste disfrutar de un texto, para mí, tan insulso, fácil y vacío, no lo sé. El caso es que la historia prometía: una mujer fuerte e independiente tenía un accidente de avión con un hombre rudo, fuerte, muy masculino y nada complaciente, quedando atrapados en una isla desierta del océano Pacífico; pero la forma en la que la acción está llevada es tan simplona que a veces se me ha hecho cuesta arriba seguir leyendo. A medida que avanzaba, y una vez que ellos han roto la línea que les separaba, la trama ha tomado un poco más de interés, apoyada en la curiosidad natural que tengo frente a cualquier historia en la que estoy enfrascada.
Para mí, un texto vacío, sin sentimientos, con dos personales demasiado previsibles: ella tonta, con un "ay, no lo soporto, es un neandertal, masculino, vigoroso, poderoso, pero nunca pide las cosas, siempre ordena"; aunque él ha estado un poco mejor, era algo más lógico, más normal, y quizá lo único que pueda salvar de esta novela. Es una pena que hasta los momentos de ellos dos juntos no hayan estado a la altura.
Nada, una lectura nada recomendable. No le he puesto una estrella porque he conseguido terminarla con cierta curiosidad.

January 31, 2021Since romances about being stranded on a deserted island or in the wilderness are some of my favorite tropes (blame it on watching the "Guiding Light" storyline with Hope and Alan Spaulding after school), the blurb for NS&S enticed me, not realizing it's a reissue from 1983. [That's on me because the new modern cover art/decades old story thing is common, especially with bestselling marquee authors who have extensive backlists.]
It's typical of mainstream contemporary romances from the 1980s with mansplaining, man pain as a flimsy excuse for misogyny, and other outdated staple traits for the lead male character, which make Skye and Kyle's story read as dated and sometimes cringe-worthy for readers with 21st-century sensibilities and personal tripwires tied to volatile intimate partner relationships.
Content warning: Kyle is an alphahole.

Nebylo to tak hrozné, jak jsem si myslela, že bude, ale ten konec to pohřbil.
Vyšla v roce 1983, takže hrdina se chová jako hňup. Ale hrdinka má pro něho pochopení.
s. 23 Najednou si uvědomila, že Kyle se do role bezcitného pána tvorstva možná jen stylizuje. Vždyť v řadě jeho útoků a narážek nacházela zrnka vtipu. 🤦
Nemůžu se zbavit dojmu, že autorka neudržela myšlenku.
Hrdinka je sice „lehká“ a „křehká“, ale hrdina ji v havarovaném letadle vezme do náruče. Ona procitne a zaječí. Bez váhání jí vrazil pořádnou facku.
Takže ji držel jednou rukou? A to na sobě měla ještě drahnou dobu plstěný klobouk se širokým okrajem.
s. 9 Navzdory šoku z pádu, Skye odmítá opustit vrak letadla bez své tašky. I s ní skočí z křídla a Kyle ji chytí. Rozběhli se po pláži, na podpatcích si podvrkla kotník. Zvedl ji do náručí i s taškou.
s. 10 Plachtili vzduchem, plátěná taška se od nich odpoutala a uháněla sama kupředu.
s. 12 Ale zase ne až tak daleko – ležela jen kousek vedle.
Obsah tašky: Dva litry domácího rumu a několik lahví burgundského. A nevytekla ani klapka.
Ona má alkohol, on má (v kapsách) kapesní nůž, zapalovač a cigarety. Zapálí si – navzdory tomu, že právě zmokli a hrdinka má na sobě kostým zoufale zmáčený a nechtěl uschnout. (s. 25)
Probudil se v něm gentleman a pocítil potřebu hrdinku informovat, že jakmile mu dojdou cigarety bude to špatné. (s. 20)
Hrdinka sice nekouří, ale má ve své kouzelné tašce i karton cigaret.
Pak sice oschla, ale uraženě odkráčela a nohy v punčochách strčila do teplého přílivu. Pak ji roztřásla zima, tak vytáhla nohy z vody a šla spinkat. V těch mokrých punčochách? (s. 32, 33)
Nechápu, proč kamsi kulhá, aby mu mohla omýt tvář mořskou vodou, když právě zmokli a kolem je vody a vody.
s. 39 a rozprostřel kousky masa na žhavé uhlíky
oheň (…) Nad ním se na provizorním grilu vyrobeném ze dvou větví peklo cosi voňavého
s. 43 Otočil klacek, na němž byla ryba nabodnuta. „Dal jsem ji vysoko, aby se vyudila.“
s. 19 zírala mezi jeho dlouhé klíční kosti, které byly stejně bronzové jako jeho tvář a olemované chomáčky kudrnatých chloupků v barvě leštěné mědi.
s. 43 svaly na jeho hladkém hrudníku
s. 75 kaštanové chloupky na jeho prsou
s. 82 hustý kaštanový porost na jeho hlavě i prsou

A to ví odkud? A čím se přivázali? Provazy, které ve volných chvílích udělal z látky, protože měl tušení, že by to mohlo přijít?
Není lepšího úkrytu než mezi statnými starými kmeny, zatímco Stromy se ohýbaly a hned zas vstávaly, mohutné větve se lámaly jako zápalky a oceán bouřil. (s. 59, 60)
To ani nemluvím o tom, co všechno dokáže hrdina s kapesním nožíkem a pilníkem na nehty. O tom se MacGyverovi ani nesnilo.
s. 64 od té doby bývá viděn s herečkami a modelkami z celého světa
Ale s. 63 – nikdy se nenechá fotit. Hm.
s. 44 před den je tady úmorné vedro, ale v noci zase docela zima
s. 72 Místní teplota nikdy neklesá pod dvacet stupňů
Zajímalo by mě, co přesně autorka myslí palubním deníkem letadla. Který hrdina najde, navzdory tomu, že letadlo spadlo, vybuchlo a hořelo. A když se vrací k chatrči, tak náhodou zakopne o kovovou skříňku. 100 metrů od letadla. Tři zámky a každý jiný. Bušil do nich tak dlouho, až Velký kámen se mu rozpadl v ruce (…) za normálních okolností by skříňku neotevřelo ani stádo slonů, ale on měl nyní šanci, protože v něm stále ještě bublal vztek z nedávné hádky
A tak rozbil dalších šest kamenů. (s. 129, 130)
s. 130-132
Podle hrdiny dostala křehká hrdinka na palubu letadla nějakým způsobem těžkou skříňku se zlatem. Byla špatná pašeračka a její společník ji podrazil, bo naplánoval, že poškodí letadlo, to spadne a on podle vyhledávacího zařízení ve falešném dně truhličky (hrdina ho neviděl, ale je si jistý, že tam je) zlato vyloví a bude jenom jeho. Není mi jasné, jak by mohl naplánovat, že spadnou na ostrov a ne o kus dál do oceánu.
To je naprosto nelogická zápletka. Včetně vysvětlení, že zlosynem bude trpělivý potápěč.
Zamaskovat přístřešek z větví, listí a rákosí dalšími listy, aby nebyl vidět? Takže ho neuvidí ani případný zachránce? A zloduch stejně přesně ví, kde jsou, protože tam asi možná má to sledovací zařízení a už šest týdnů číhá na svoji příležitost.
s. 251 „když teď zůstaneš, použiju svůj trumf proti Líze.“ (…) sám se podivil, co vlastně řekl (…) Uvědomil si, že za to Sky nemůže
s. 252 „Dobře. Ty použiješ to, co máš proti Líze, a já zůstanu.“
Cítila, jak náhle ztuhl a jeho tvář se ještě víc napjala. (…) Dává mu ultimátum... Chce po něm, aby prodal svoji duši... V tom okamžiku neměl sílu ji odmítnout. Skye netušila, co se mu honí hlavou. Něco jí slíbil, ale teď se zdálo, že by to nejraději vzal zase zpátky...
Zjevně si už nepamatuje, že s tím, že něco na svoji manželku má a nebude váhat to použít, přišel on sám. Od začátku jí odmítal říct, o co jde. To je potom divení. Ale trochu starého dobrého sexu v šestém měsíci všechno napravilo.
Naštěstí šel potom kolem syn, který hrdince prozradil, že hrdina ji opravdu miluje, i když se chová jako hovado. A že problém je v tom, že jeho rodiče netuší, že on ví, že jeho tata není jeho tata.
A kvůli tomu si uvědomí, že se k hrdinovi „chovala hrozně“.
Tak se rozhodne, že zajde za manželkou, aby jí řekla, co cítí. A tím ji tak dojde, že okamžitě svolí k rozvodu.
Pak se ukázalo, že hrdina měl už na ostrově po několikadenní známosti v úmyslu zplodit s ní dítě, protože netušil, jestli se z ostrova někdy dostanou, k jídlu mají spoustu ovoce a ryb, a s dítětem by jim tam nebylo tak smutno. (s. 268)
Doktoři by neměli radost, kdyby s ním letěla do Sydney. (s. 271)
Rodit začala ve chvíli, kdy se Kyle vracel od rozvodového soudu. Dostal geniální nápad a jako ústupek sehnal i doktora, protože jako zkušený otec neviděl problém v tom právě teď si zaletět do Las Vegas a vzít se.
Na cestě domů bolesti zesílily. Kyle se snažil odvést její myšlenky a vysvětloval jí, jak má správně dýchat.
„Ale no tak, paní Jaggerová,“ konejšil ji, když mu vší silou zmáčkla ruku, „tak strašně to zase není!“ (…)
„Pro tebe určitě ne. Rodit budu já, ne ty!“
Kyle se zasmál. Připadalo mu to všechno docela zábavné.
s. 275 Ale nakonec Byla Kyleovi vděčná, že jí vymluvil narkózu. 🤦
Na s. 24 se jeho společnost jmenovala Executive World Charters, potom už jenom Executive Charters.
Na některé věci mi nestačí fantazie.
s. 15, 16 Hlavu měl pořád v jejím klíně (…) Pilot se prudce posadil, až ji přitom nohou téměř povalil.

Not only did Skye survive, but also the pilot, Kyle Jagger, owner of the company, unbeknownst to Skye. Forced to work together in order to survive, the two become lovers although each had someone waiting for them at home. Is it just an island fling or enduring love?
I liked this book a lot. It is escape fantasy for the reader and very well written and engaging.

Just an "ok escape..slow to start, but it hooked my curiosity, and I had to finish it! Enough twists and conflicts along the way to make the time spent enjoyable. This was my first read by H. Graham. I'm a sucker for a good romance, just not sure I'm a fan of the POV this tale was told in: alot of internal dialogue!

this novel surprised me alot. it was a great love story with just a slight mystery involved. there were no spirits, ghosts, murder etc as in alot of her novels. it was just a relaxing novel that kept a reader wanting to keep reading.

I fully expected this to be a story focused on survival—it was not. I love a good romance book but everything about their relationship felt toxic, making this a difficult read.

Skye Delaney, a fashion and jewelry designer of some renown, is flying home to USA from Australia when her private chartered plane crash lands on some small island in the Pacific. Luckily, the plane's pilot, Kyle Jagger, who also happens to own the charter company and is a celebrity millionaire to boot, is damned good at flying and gets them off the plane before it explodes. Instantly, there is attraction between them...and angst. Lots of arguing, too. Until the deserted island becomes an Eden and neither can deny the passion. But what will happen to their love when civilization, with all its complications, finds them?
I first read this book in the later 90s as a teenager. I quite liked it. On a recent re-read I'm not quite as keen, though I'll keep the rating at 4 stars because it's not the book's fault times have changed. A lot.
The book was written in the beginning of the 80's, one of Heather Graham's first novels. And I've read enough novels from this time period to know that Kyle was actually fairly sensitive for a romance hero then. In fact, my only criticism regarding the book in the context of its time is that the hero and heroine need to spend less time angsting out internally and more time talking. Maybe then they would trust each other.
However, now that it's 2019, and looking at the novel through that lens, there are additional issues. For example, the scene where he's decided they should have sex and she pushes the breaks: he does stop quickly and willingly but then gets angry when she doesn't give him a reason he considers good enough. He speaks to her rudely at several points, seemingly for being a woman to his macho man. He practically attacks her to kiss her at several points, even one of their last sex scenes is fairly violent at first. Plus, the fact that he hopes to get her pregnant to trap her in a relationship with him, which he acknowledges in his thoughts as probably wrong, stinks of male entitlement and control. (I'm not going to criticize the novel for normal practices of the time--so though there are some things in the latter part of the book that we know not to do now, it wasn't known then in 1980 or 81, the likely time the novel was written. Similarly attitudes toward divorce, separation, and pregnancy outside marriage are remarkable different today).
Having said all that, I still like the book. Even through a 2019 lens. The characters are strong, sympathetic and the story interesting. I feel like I never see romances like this anymore: contemporary but not suspense or explicit or comedic. It's almost like a Harlequin Presents novel with a little more plot and more polished writing (much apologies HP writers, some of you are quite skilled, too), but still that focus on angst and romance. And ultra-rich, famous heroes who are super hot.
Want a more realistic romance like this one: On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves, though I think only the stranded on an island together part is similar. Also Nerd in shining armor by Vicki Lewis Thompson is another for a more cute and fun adventure romance.

The heroine was all too unrelatable. Plus she kept drinking alcoholic beverages while pregnant! That kind of made me mad. The hero was OK. The story started off interesting and then went from good to worse. I guess I went in expecting one thing when I should've come in with a totally open mind. I would read Tracey Garvis' On the Island instead. Similar plot but much, much better storyline. That and both characters are more realistic (not filthy rich, average people).

This book starts out slowly and a lot of arguing but it gets so that you don't want to stop reading it until you find out if they are ever going to really get past their fears and communicate with each other. I liked it.

Its just like seeing a remake '6 days 7 nights' movie, but in more detail without enemies appear.

An island, a hunk of a man, who could want more? Oh, yes, a good plot and interesting story. I loved the characters too.

It was a fun, easy read. It was very 80's and therefore did feel a little dated but I could live with it. It didn't rock my world but it also didn't make me cringe.
