Nick has inherited his grandparents’ home with acreage and has decided to live there. He has earned enough dollars in the big city to retire although he is only in his forties. The howling from the one rickety shed puts him on edge, but he found nothing there. His grandfather was found at the bottom of the shed where tunnels run in different directions. Nick realizes there is something weird, but will wait a while before investigating. What does the cold from below have to do with the well that wasn’t dug? Why did the well crew refuse to do any more work? He enjoys a meal at the local café. People welcome him when they realize who he is. The neighbor warns him about the shed and then a sister of a childhood friend arrives and he realizes the “Twig” as they called her has become a beautiful woman called Sam. She too has a warning about the shed and for him not to go underneath alone. The mystery only deepens when he discovers the Native Americans have warnings about the evil invaders. The head man of the Native Americans explains some things and tells him he must investigate, but not alone. He must mark the doorways to the Entries, but not enter them. Sam helps him with the mapping and they take a trip to visit his parents. Things start to progress. The neighbor brings in his work friend to help set dynamite charges. Nick and Sam map everything while fighting the pull of the Entries. The huge Native American leader joins them to keep everything purifies while charges are being laid. One of the evils attacks, but Nick is able to fend them off with his knife. Will the small band be successful? Will evil or good win?

Nick was at loose ends. He retired early with two divorces, no friends, and no place to call home. After attending his grandfather’s funeral, he finds that he is the sole heir. Now he’s adapting to a new home with an ancient evil. Nick finds new friends as the dangerous tunnels expand beneath his land. Romance blossoms while plans are developed to confront the spreading evil. But how can fancy modern equipment overcome the incomprehensible terror below? “Entries” is well written, with creative connections between legends and the adventures.

A retired investment advisor. An elderly Native American Shaman. A book store owner. A retired explosives expert with claustrophobia. A restaurant owner. If you were going to come up with a team to fight an other-worldly threat, are those the people you would choose? In P.S. Winn’s book ENTRIES, they are the ones circumstances stick with the job. An interesting blend of science fiction and horror, ENTRIES starts off slowly and builds throughout the book. The title tells much in a single word. In Winn’s novel, the entries are a series of underground portals leading to other times and places, but all connecting with evil forces trying to take over earth. Winn’s steady, controlled writing conveys the threat and tension without needing excessive violence and gore, makes her characters believable, and makes ENTRIES an excellent book

Otherworldly Evil

Steeped in Lakota folklore, Author P.S. Winn’s Sci-Fi/Horror novel capitalizes on the good intentions of a few good townsfolk affected by the underground tunnel “entries”. Emanating from beneath a farm shed, their evil is spreading to the town of Tarsdale, having originated from a confrontation between good and evil aliens many moons ago.

As always, the author infuses her stories with credible down-to-earth characters whose backgrounds lend warmth to the cause. In this case, it’s the budding relationship between Nick Porter and Sam Hart who have their own troubled pasts.

Caught up in the story, I was fraught with anxiety every time Sam, Nick, Carl, Ron, or Standing Bear tunneled below the shed in preparation for doing away with otherworldly evil on the Summer Solstice.

A novel worth a reader's entry!
