A new author for me

The book was okay, and I definitely had to finish it but something was off for me. I don't know what it was but it just didn't flow of something. I enjoyed the story about a Baron wanting to get revenge for his father's death in a carriage race, using the sister of the young man that was driving. He was also read so he decided to punish the family by making sure they had no progeny to carry on the Lisle name. He would marry the heroine and never bed her. But that becomes a problem because he really wants her. You could feel the desire for sure. There are villains in this too, including the girls Mother who belittles her at every point. And the Father who just wants her to breed so he can have an heir. It's just all muddled up but Theravada good ending. I do find it odd when there is a detailed intimate scene in the epilogue. I have read two books lately that have that and maybe it happens all the time but this has shown up only recently for me. It throws me off for some reason. It's just different. Satisfying read and will try another just to see if it's her method of writing that is different or if it's just me. Most likely me. Safe and free in KU

One can always count on Lisa to give you a story that tugs on all of your emotions. This one will have you hating the mother, sadden for what life has done to Charlotte and how is feels about herself.
You will hate Robert for his treatment of her. I wanted to smack him upside the head a number of times.
Charlotte is the daughter of Viscount Lisle she has always taken a back seat to her brother, Ernest and the heir. Her mother is a piece of work for sure, worst then the evil step mother in Cinderella. Charlotte is a quite girl, loving her books, and animals mostly. She wears spectacles and has been told her whole life that she is not pretty and her hair is a nasty color. Her only love and friend in life is her brother, Ernest. Her life changes for the worst when he is killed. Now both her parents are forcing her to find a husband to carry on the Lisle line thanks to the Prince.
Robert is the only son to a Baron. He has been in the Kings Army for a long-time making Commander.
His life is never going to be the same when he receives word his father is dead. When he learns how he died all he wants his revenge. Finding he can't have it as the person is dead also, he decides to ruin the family instead. Marrying the daughter and then never having any children will make the Lisle die out.
Thinking only of the hate, and revenge running thru him, he forgets Charlotte is a person, a warm, loving beautiful woman. He never thought to lust after his wife. With mix emotions filling him, evil around every corner this story is more than a page turner. His little bluestocking is not what he expected. Charlotte doesn't understand the hot and cold of her husband and blames herself. Can these two every have what both want ? Will a happy ever after be in their future ? Who is the evil person behind all of it ? I hope you get a copy and find out. This is steamy story for those who like to know.
This story has it all intrigue, mystery, passion and two people learning what's really important in life.

It might be unfair of me to rate this so low, but it lost at least half a star over several things I was not keen on:

1. It’s borderline erotica. Nothing wrong with that genre in and of itself, but it was not at all what I was looking for in this. I do appreciate some steam, but not only is sex a shortcut to intimacy and a cover for instalove, it’s waaay too much of the length for my tastes. Multiple sex scenes, each of which are several pages. Not what I set out to read.

2. There were a couple of pieces of ridiculousness. One, that Charlotte and her family would be out at balls and social engagements and getting married when their mourning period for the only son and heir had barely begun! And while , Robert’s antipathy towards Charlotte was flimsy at best, and so quickly washed away by lust I felt it unlikely that he would follow through on his revenge.

And most damningly, 3. The angst does not pay off! I wanted a lot more turmoil and some protracted groveling, and the setup made it totally possible. However, the ending felt a bit rushed and I like a downtrodden heroine, but because that usually comes with a deeply remorseful hero on his knees. Not so, here; at least, not enough IMO. It’s not as though she is privy to his internal monologue!!!

Still, lots of elements I loved, and I’d read more from this author. (2.5 stars)

A steamy story. I different storyline, but a few issues for me. Charlotte is supposed to be very shortsighted, but at a Ball when mother has taken her classes she seems to be able see reasonably well. There is talk of bars in Robert’s club. I thought most clubs in this era would be waiter service? There is reference to light skirts in the club, again doubtful. Charlotte first meets him at a ball, but this is just weeks after her brother’s death. Surely they would be in mourning so balls etc would be out of the question, indeed they may even remove to the country.
When he visits the Lisle ladies he gestures for the ladies to sit. Lady Lisle as hostess would determine when they sit as it is her house, and additionally she out ranks him. I am also slightly doubtful about him having a revolver, more likely a pistol. Revolvers arrived more mid 1800’s in England and this is Regency? Also safety catches were later. These niggles did distract for me, maybe some thoughtful editing could have avoided some.
I wondered about Robert’s plan. Yes it would end the Lisle succession, but there is no mention of any other heirs of his own so his line would end, or at best move to another branch of the family. Not sure his father would have been keen on that. I also was not keen on the ending. I thought it was a little gangster ish and possibly rushed. Ideally I would like to give 2.5 stars.

Worth Every Page

"The Baroness' Empty Bed" by Lisa Campbell was a complete surprise. I had seen that is was a very lengthy novel over 400 pages and put it by because there were some smaller books to read. I am now very sorry I did. It was a surprise to find that it was a very entertaining 400 pages.
This story begins with Charlotte Lisle (pronounced lyle), i had to look it up, a wallflower with glasses, an overbearing mother, and an older brother who is tragically killed in a carriage race.
Then there Robert, a baron's only son, whose father is also killed in a carriage mishap. Since Robert is in Spain, fighting Napoleon's army, it takes him a while to get home. When he arrives his solicitor explains known circumstanes about his father's death along with a note that blames Charlotte's brother. He decides the Lisle family should feel his pain.
Robert sets out to marry Charlotte in order to get revenge for his father and to end the Lisle family line. But, there is a wrinkle or two that makes up the rest of this story. The characters go through a surprising metamorphical transformation, and redemption through their marriage. It was a story worth reading. I give it 5 stars.

Charlotte, a wallflower, has always been told by her Mother that she is frumpy, wears glasses and reads too much. This is her third season and her Mother is desperate to marry her off. Then her brother dies in a carriage accident. Robert has just returned from the Continental wars after learning of his Father’s death in an accident. He is informed about it by his Attorney and the blame for the accident is put on Charlotte’s brother. Robert decides to pay her family back by marrying her and not consummating the marriage. This is the story of their very brief and scandalous courtship and subsequent marriage. It is sometimes sad and sometimes humorous but always interesting. Thanks to the author and publisher for an ARC for an honest review.

Robert who's father was killed during this race is out for revenge he intends to end the line of the man who killed his father, by marrying Charlotte and stopping any chance of her having a child.

Interesting story line. However, the novel would be much more interesting had it not been so wordy. More action in fewer pages would be perfect. The H was manipulated too much by his friend, the protagonist. The h was admirable.

This is a most beguiling read! The path(s) taken by the two main characters is/are an adventure in itself. No disappointment to be felt in the telling of this 'fun' story. Quite worth 'snuggling up with.' Highly recommend!

Amazing

This was a really great story. Vengeance turns to love with a betrayal from a longtime friend. I was suspecting that he was somehow going to be involved but didn't quite see that coming. Not too many typos in this one.

Great story

This was a lovely story about misunderstanding. An innocent woman is tricked into marriage. The couple falls in love and the gentleman realizes his mistake.

Very well written and readers are drawn into the story.

Charlotte is shy and quiet.
Robert is kind and loving but out for revenge (albeit a quiet revenge)
This book has dual perspective so we get a peek into both their minds and how they see themselves and each other. It really helps feel even more emotions.
Robert wants to “trap her” in marriage but at the same time, he finds that he doesn’t dislike her and so finds it hard to stay true to his mission for revenge.
Charlotte is so perfect for him and he for her. He helps her become more confident without even trying.
The side characters were also well developed which just brought everything together.
The issue I had was with the last 10-15%. It was disappointing especially after 90% of the book made us feel everything the characters are feeling.
It was just a flat and boring ending. A little rushed and quite obvious.
