When the sins of the past demand payment, his magic is the price.
Blaise Hawthorne never wanted to hurt anyone, and he certainly didn’t want to become a weapon. When using his dangerous magic to free his outlaw friends destroys an enemy fortress, the young mage is imprisoned for his crimes. Abused and at the mercy of his tormenters, Blaise’s only ally is a duplicitous man he’s not sure he can trust.
After escaping his cruel upbringing, politician Malcolm Wells had everything—or so he thought. He didn’t count on falling for Breaker Blaise Hawthorne. And it’s all his fault that Blaise has been captured as a war criminal. The Breaker is running out of time, and Malcolm’s money, power, and influence have proven useless to win his freedom.
When a magic-slinging outlaw storms into town, Malcolm seizes the opportunity to form an uneasy alliance. The pair hatch a bold gambit to free Blaise, but their enemy is one step ahead. At the mercy of Malcolm’s dark past, everything they fought for unravels. All the magic in the world may not be enough to save any of them from the nightmare to come.
Amy Campbell is an independent author and librarian. She grew up in Houston, which she still calls home. Amy writes epic fantasy novels about men and women who are unapologetically true to themselves (and throws in the occasional pegasus or chupacabra to keep it interesting). When not working at the library or writing, Amy is chasing after her two busy young boys.
This book is everything I wanted out of this sequel (Read: Jack's wife setting things on fire with her mind). In all seriousness this book follows the continuing adventure of the outlaw mages as they do their best to escape oppression. It is a great blend of character, world, magic, and realism. The characters we grew to love in the first novel grew in interesting ways, and the new characters were wonderful additions to the cast. I am interested to see where the story goes from here because the ending of this book will have major repercussions on the world the author has built. I was fortunate enough to be a beta reader for this one, and I am happy to now be able to recommend it to the world. If you are a fan of flintlock fantasy (sixgun fantasy?) then this series is a no-brainer.
I received Amy’s Effigist as an ARC and am pleased to do a review for her. Was so glad to read Amy’s Effigist. And I want to thank Amy for adding the “Previously” which helped me remember the events of her first book, Breaker. The only problem I had with reading Effigist was falling asleep while I was reading. I really love books that are hard to put down and Effigist is one of those.
Amy’s story line is easy to follow and she did more character development that I felt made the story line easier to follow. So what is next for Blaise, his Pegasus Emrys and Jefferson? Will Blaise & Jefferson’s friendship last? And what about Jack, his Pegasus Zepheus and Kittie? Will they recover that they had? And I haven’t forgotten Emmaline and her Pegasus, Oberidon – will their story continue.
This was an excellent read. Not my normal genre but what's not to love about a cross between a western and a dark mage fantasy? The characters were well rounded, the plot had plenty of action and the finish didn't disappoint. There were a few times the story seemed to drag a little but all in all a very entertaining and satisfying read. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series from Ms. Campbell.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
I loved this second book in the Outlaw Mages series even more than the first.
Picking up straight from the end of Breaker, Effigest gives us a broken Blaise. Captive and tortured, at the mercy of people who want to make his worst nightmares come true and use him as a living weapon, he has only a shred of hope left in being rescued. One coming from a man Blaise isn't sure he can trust.
Great characters, and a just as great plot full of edge of the seat action, are nicely rounded up by heart-touching feeling and a bite-your-nails-can't-turn-pages-fast-enough type of tension. All of it is then topped by a wonderful romance that manages to tug on all the heartstrings. Because of the depth of feelings and characters alike, as well as the 'real-human- like' way in which they are perceived. Conditions, compromises, morals, personalities - they all have that genuine feel of 'the real deal.'
And then there are the Pegasi, who absolutely steal the show! Cuteness overload!!
A great plot, unique and downright fascinating wordbuilding, good action, nicely upped tension, irresistible four footed winged companions and a romance with all the feels. This book has it all, and I highly recommend it to all those in search of an excellent read.
I took a big break between reading Effigest after Breaker (only because I have twenty million other books to read, and I was moving states lol) and must say, I was ecstatic to see a 'previously on' when I opened the book. It was the saving grace that stopped me from going back and flicking through Breaker to remember what happened. Thank you Amy Campbell for including such a thing!!!
I adored Effigest with every fibre of my being. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and all the character development that happens is so good.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; Blaise is a good boy who deserves to be wrapped in the fluffiest of blankets and be protected. Anyone who looks at Blaise and thinks that man could harm someone is an idiot. The boy just wants to bake and be anxious in peace.
I also loved that we got to see more of Jefferson and Malcolm, and I really like how the author portrays them as both the same person yet not the same as well. It's really good writing!
10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a good fantasy series to get involved with!
There was one thing I was a little disappointed in, but it's such a minor thing that it doesn't even affect the plot. Which scene? [SPOILER] The fade to black scene with Blaise, because as we know, Blaise is Ace and from what I gathered, he was on the sex repulsed part of the ace spectrum. But then he seems to get past it all for the one he loves. It might just be me not understanding romance, but it just irked me the tiniest bit. The book is still a 10 no matter what anyway!
Ever since I finished reading Breaker about a year ago, I've been so eager to read Effigest, and I'm so glad to say that I enjoyed book two as much as I enjoyed book one!
Effigest pretty much picks up where Breaker left off; Blaise on his way to face trial for what he did in Fort Courage, with Jefferson/Malcolm to aid him along the way. Elsewhere, Wildfire Jack finds that his daughter, Emmaline, has vanished overnight, and suspecting that she's gone to find Blaise, takes off after her.
I can't get enough this series, Blaise is such an unlikely hero who I absolutely adore, I just want nice things for him! Without spoiling too much, I can confirm that, whilst he also gets his fair share of toil in Effigest, he also has some good stuff happen to him.
I loved the exploration of his asexuality, and his relationship with Jefferson/Malcolm. As a queer writer, I always appreciate LGBTQ+ representation, and Blaise and his asexuality are written so authentically. It's such a pleasure to read!
If you haven't already read Breaker, do that IMMEDIATELY, and then come and read Effigest. If you don't, you'll be missing out on a phenomenal series! I look forwards to what Dreamer has in store for me.
I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. It's not an exaggeration when I say that this book has consumed my every waking moment for a month when I first got the ARC to read.
I could not put this book down the first day I opened it! It was an instant favorite, and I had to read it twice! This series has everything I've ever wanted in books and is such a delight to find. I was obsessed with anything horse, pegasus, and unicorn based as a child and this is the perfect upgrade into the same fiction reading as an adult! All the charm and delight of friendship and relationships, the fun of having bonds with equines, and the heart-racing suspense of trying to guess how they're going to get out of trouble this time! The poor decisions made from even worse choices, the intimate moments, and the unexpected regret all hit so hard. Absolutely captivating! I keep thinking back to the memorable characters and how hard the emotions hit me as they laughed, cried, and occasionally drank too much. Every turn of the plot I found myself more and more invested in the futures of each of these characters and I'm now eager to recommend this book to all of my friends like we use to share our favorite stories as children. A great read for anyone who has been looking for an equestrian glowup!
My favorite parts were the Blaise!whump and Blaise!Recovery. I also liked the ethical dilemmas Jefferson/Malcolm faced when trying to decide how to best free and support Blaise. My one complaint is that two of the biggest setbacks our protagonists face could have been avoided if they had just communicated with each other. Those scenes felt more contrived as opposed to being inevitable or developing organically because of each character's flaws, which is a weakness in this book that I did not observe (or at least did not bother me) in the first book.
An excellent read. Blaise just wanted to be left alone and cook. However, his takkent as Braker make that almost impossible. He is up against odds that favor his oppeonents. The Confederation is down on Mages but some people are still on his side. But will that be enough. Well worth reading.
Bad-ass cowboys, pegasi, mages with multifaceted powers - this paranormal series combines good action, great characters and intriguing world-building. I really like how the plot unfolds from multi-charater POVs (gay and straight, male and female) without being too distracting or disjointed. A bigger plus is the female characters are given as much agency and initiative as the male. The whole allowed for some levity in a fast-paced action-driven plot. A couple of threads (and bad-guys) from the first book are wound up here but a new main antagonist emerges to continue on into the next book. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Blaise Hawthorne’s life is in shambles. Alone, afraid, and at the mercy of the Salt-Iron Confederation, Blaise is a wreck. The one thing he never wanted was to cause anyone harm, and being used as the Salties’ weapon is his absolute worst nightmare. Now, he must suffer torture and abuse at the hands of his captors, his only salvation being visits from Malcolm Wells, a man he doesn’t know if he can trust.
Malcolm Wells is a politician: suave, charismatic, and able to make most people fall under his spell with a smile and a few choice words. But all of that was before he fell in love with Blaise Hawthorne. As a Doyen, Malcolm’s contacts are vast, but not even he can command Blaise’s release from prison. Tortured by the realization that it is his fault Blaise was captured in the first place, Malcolm feels completely and utterly helpless. He’s drowning in his emotions when he runs into Wildfire Jack. Although the outlaw mage had never really approved of Malcolm, they form a shaky alliance so they can both get what they want… but will it be enough?
Ahhhhhh!!!! This book was even better than the first one, which is something I do not say lightly!!! It definitely had its moments. I laughed, I cried, I had to stop and breathe because if I didn’t I would’ve thrown something… I’ve even been accused of being on a “book high” as I write this, actually!!! This book was perfection. Absolute perfection. Wildfire Jack, for starters. He puts on this “surly bastard” mask for the rest of the world, but there is so much more to him than you think!!! And as for Blaise and Malcolm… those two have my whole heart. Their relationship brings me so much joy. I won’t give away any spoilers, but trust me, you are going to love them!!!
Blaise. This poor man, he is literally trapped in his own personal nightmare. After everything that happened to him before Itude, it just feels unjust. But Blaise doesn’t lose who he is. He doesn’t shut down and let the Salties mold him into whatever they want him to be. He stays true to himself, and I couldn’t be more proud of him for that. Malcolm. I was curious about him when he was first introduced in “Breaker,” but I have to say that by the end of this book, he had me wrapped around his little finger!!! Malcolm has a lot on his plate. And yes, he’s powerful, and in a political position that would give Blaise every right to distrust him. But Malcolm never uses that power to hurt or use those that are considered to be “less” than him. And I respect that.
All in all, this book was a wild ride that I loved every second of. Amy Campbell has a forever fan in me, and I can’t wait for book three!!!
Effigest is the second book in the Tales of the Outlaw Mages-series by Amy Campbell, a fantasy western series. I really enjoyed the first book Breaker which set the groundwork for this and the following books in this series and already introduced most of the characters we see in Effigest. And this book is able to live up to my expectations.
But first things first. It’s not so long ago I read Breaker, the first book in the series. But still, I was very excited that Amy Campbell gave a little “What happened so far…” at the beginning of Effigest. I cannot stress enough how much I love to have this in any story that is divided into multiple books, because I usually never read a series in one go, but take breaks in between – there are simply too many books out there that want to be read.
The story picks up shortly after the ending of the first book and it’s a rather bleak beginning for the main characters. The tone in general is quite a bit darker than in the first book and there is also more emphasis on the romance than before (in this regard I feel the need to mention that this is the first fantasy-book I’ve ever read that is touching upon asexuality). This leads to more quiet and introspective moments of the main characters and less action-scenes. The diverse POV ensemble grows with Jefferson/Malcolm taking up a lot more space than before which results in a focus on social and political maneuvering. Also, the wonderful female cast is getting more attention and stage-time than before. And did I mention the telepathically communicating pegasi that have a sweet tooth?
Effigestlets us explore more of the world of the Outlaw Mages: We get more world-building, more information about the different types of magic and we also learn a lot more about the main characters’ past. I highly enjoyed these aspects.
I am curious to see where the story will take us next.
I love fantasy, but I have so many complaints when it comes to the genre. Overdone archetypes. Terrible female characters. A convoluted and hard to follow plot. Little to no diverse representation. Well, you don’t have to worry about any of that with this series. It’s such a breath of fresh air!
This book continues where things left off in the first book, Breaker (so these aren’t stand-alones). I won’t get too deep into anything to avoid spoilers, but I loved everything about this book. The plot continues to be compelling, the characters are put in some tough spots, relationships are put to the test, and there’s a lot of character growth.
I love that the main character is not your typical hero and is so relatable. He just wants to be a normal guy who spends all his time baking. The world might find him extraordinary or even scary, but he doesn’t feel special at all. I also love that he’s ace and the way it’s written was easy to relate to. It’s always nice to read about a male character that isn’t full of ego and focused on demonstrating manliness (whatever that is) and obsessed with women.
But honestly, the best part? All the women in this book were absolute bad a$$es! And in their own unique ways! I’m obsessed with Flora and I hope we get her backstory in the next book.
And yes - there’s going to be a third book! I’m so excited!! 💃
I can’t recommend this book enough. Run don’t walk and grab it!
When the sins of the past demand payment Blaise's magic is the price... The breaker may be running out of time will his friends/allies manage to change that? I LOVED Effigest (Tales of the Outlaw Mages #2) by Amy Campbell that I received through BookFunnel and I am glad to review. I definitely recommend the series so far and I am looking forward to book 3. This book, along with the first book, is available on Amazon
Can we require that all books in a series start with a “Previously…” section? Seriously, it’s the first time I’ve seen it, and it needs to be standard. I’ve spent so much time looking for detailed synopses of books I read years ago when the sequel finally comes out!
This book is another fun adventure into the world the author created, but this time we get to see a bit more of it, which was really interesting. We got our favorite old characters back, and I loved some of the new ones we met!
I loved this page-turning adventure tale! Magic cowboys, pegasus, political intrigue, and a story about finding yourself and the price of freedom. I think this one is even better than the first book (Breaker) and is one of my top reads of the year! Don't miss it! Unique fantasy with a western twist, you won't find anything else quite like it. Go grab yours today!
I don’t normally read this sort of book, but after reading Breaker I had to find out what happened next! Would Blaise be Okay? What’s the deal with Jefferson? Will Jack ever find his wife? Those questions all get answered, but more questions come up! I enjoyed this book and I look forward to the next one!
I really enjoyed this second book in the Outlaw Mages series! I liked what was happening with Jefferson/Malcolm and there’s a bit more romance in this one. I can’t get into it too much because there would be too many spoilers. I’m really looking forward to the next book!
I really enjoyed Effigest, even more than I enjoyed Breaker, though that may be mostly because Breaker is incomplete in itself, while Effigest is a much more complete story. I hate cliff-hangers when I enjoyed the novel and I can’t read the next one yet, and while Breaker ends on something of a cliff-hanger, Effigest does not.
As always, the pegasi are cute and heart-warming, with loads of personality. They’re so easy to imagine – Emrys, Zepheus, Oberidon. I love Emrys’ loyalty to Blaise and the friendship between those two. They are almost snuggly. Emrys is the best, and there are some ridiculously cute scenes with him. Zepheus, Jack’s pegasi friend, is something of a different sort, as is Jack himself. Their relationship is equally cute and heart-warming, but with a little more – sass, perhaps? There’s certainly more conflict, but the turmoil does not conceal the absolute loyalty and friendship of their bond. They’re such a team, and I loved it.
There’s a whole lot of depth to the story and the relationships. Jefferson/Malcolm is absolutely head-over-heels in love with Blaise, who is a war criminal according to the Salt-Iron Confederation (because he did something Jefferson urged him to do), and a mage, which means in the Salt-Iron Confederation that he is considered nothing more than a tool, less even than an animal. Jefferson is a wealthy businessman and a doyen on the Salt-Iron Council, and has sworn to Blaise that he will fight the entire Salt-Iron Confederation for him. Blaise’s feelings about Jefferson are more reserved and conflicted, as he is asexual and, besides, has a history of being neglected, ostracized and used, not to mention his present situation which consists of being kept in a cell and mis-treated. Their relationship and the tension is presented with a lot of depth and reality, and it is absolutely heart-touching. Eventually, Jefferson is driven, in an attempt to prevent Blaise from being further used and abused, to an act of somewhat questionable ethics, and the way that is handled, between Jefferson, Emrys, Blaise, Jefferson’s friend Flora, and Jack and the way it affects and is affected by their relationships is really well-done and human. There are a lot of ways that Blaise’s personality, drives (or lack thereof) and needs clash with Jefferson’s, and I can’t say I agree with every one of their actions or compromises, but the way they’re presented and dealt with was very genuine and human. I really enjoyed seeing how that played out and the development of their love, and I rooted for both of them. I don’t usually care for romances, and this is one of relatively few romances I’ve enjoyed. I don’t know whether that’s because of the depth and personality of the author’s treatment or if the fact that one of the characters is asexual has something to do with it, as in the other romance I really enjoyed, it was pretty clear that neither character was very asexual.
There’s not a lot of Blaise’s perspective early in the book, and that might be just as well as he’s a captive in the Golden Citadel, but what there is, is so well-done and heart-throbbing.
Wildfire Jack Dewitt is also a sympathetic character. There’s a lot of good in his so-to-speak “half” of the story as well. He sure makes some Perdition-worthy bad decisions, some of which are very sympathetic, some of which are still sympathetic but not really as much so, but there’s a lot of depth to him, and a lot more of his heart shines through. He also ends up in some really terrible spots that wring one’s heart. His wife, Kittie, who he has been looking for, for ages, also appears, and his daughter Emmaline is quite involved in a few things. The way their family situation and issues are dealt with shows a lot of depth and attention as well, and his and Kittie’s relationship is really awesome, too. They’re such a match for each other! They deserve as much of a commentary as Blaise and Jefferson, but I have a feeling I mostly rambled about those two. And did I mention how wonderful the pink-haired half-knocker Flora is? She is one loyal and sympathetic friend to Jefferson, understanding more about love and the affairs of his heart than he could have guessed, and one awesome spy/assassin/thief/bodyguard with a lot of a head in addition to her heart, and one awesome attitude to match!
There’s some really interesting plot and world-building elements as well, and, in my opinion, the author did a very interesting presentation and take on the mind-control theme/issue. And I may as well mention the presentation is sometimes very catching.
And one other thing I love: Blaise is Blaise. No matter how hurt or broken or shattered, Blaise is still Blaise. It’s very well-done and I like how Blaise’s heart never rots.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Effigest. This has not affected my review.
This review appeared first and in full on Enthralled By Love (Paths of Fantasy)
This book was just as enjoyable as the first one. That's something that's really good when it's a sequel. I've come to care a lot for these characters and Blaise has a special place in my heart. Loved the action, loved the fluffy bits and I can't get enough of the pegasi. Still think that the setting of this series is super refreshing as a fantasy reader. Mixing the wild west with magic and all kinds of different types of creatures makes for a very interesting dynamic with the characters and their surroundings. As always asexual representation is always a plus. Loved Breaker, Loved this book and I'm really looking forward to see what Dreamer has in store! 💜
I ate this book UP! The second book in this series was even better than the first one imo! The action, the magic, the whump, the relationship communication, the banter, the political drama!!! I could go on and on! Every character in this book is a delight to me (with Jack still being my favorite, predictably lol). The multiple POVs solidified it. The pacing was perfect and I had a hard time putting the book down between reading sessions because I kept getting so invested. All the drama!! The twists with Lamar and Gregor!! And the reunion between Jack and Kittie?? *chef's kiss* Perfection. Such a great series.

I'm really enjoying this series. The characters are developing even more and the high stakes keep getting higher! I can't wait to see where the rest of this story goes. This series is not for fans of "No Country for Old Men" or any John Wayne/Clint Eastwood flick. This is a very sweet, beautifully written Epic fantasy with some romance that takes place in the Old West. I love it. I love every bit of it. The Pegasi are my favorite.
Not as good as the first one, and I really wish it had dwelled more on some things and less on others, but damn if Amy doesn't exactly capture the experience of being both Asexual and in a romantic relationship. Here's to hoping the next book has much more Kittie and politics and much less sitting around and plotting.
This book definitely doesn't suffer from second book syndrome that's for sure. Not only do we have our beloved stubborn characters from book 1 but we meet some new characters as well. There's plenty of action and adventure as well as love and revenge but I won't say anything more because I don't do spoilers. If you thought the first book was good wait until you read this one.
This series is an engaging wild adventure in a Western setting with pegasi and mages. I’ve very much enjoyed it. The Breaker is the first book of the series and also definitely worth reading as well. This being number 2. Naturally, I am super invested in this series and I already have book 3 sitting in my app.
As good as the first story. Exciting. More new characters but not so many that the story is confusing. Characters have more depth, history and new abilities. Surprises along the way. Another excellent read!
