The Mobster's Daughter

Rate this book
The one man who could help her, must never know her name.

If Kate Chamberlin can't reveal her true identity to the world, she must settle for sharing only her talent. Hired as a musician for KDKA radio, Kate plays everything from sponsors’ jingles to complex sonatas. As long as the whispers around the broadcasting room refer to her as “Killjoy Kate” and not “Catarina the crime boss's daughter,” then her life is safe from danger.

Or so she thinks.

When anonymous, violent threats surface, Kate's wary of accepting protection from the handsome private investigator, Detective Jennings. His save-the-world attitude is as charming as his manners, but no one, especially him, can know the gruesome realities of her birth.

The 1924 Pittsburgh underworld is as complicated as it is elusive, and though the dealings of the Salvastanos have dwindled, Rhett Jennings is certain the man responsible for his father's death is still at large. But his personal hunt for justice must be set aside when his day job requires him to investigate threats directed at a young radio broadcaster with enamoring brown eyes and secretive behavior.

When danger surrounds them, will the truth of Kate's past become the key to their survival?

Marking “Read” because...well, I’ve read it a gazillion times. 😆

The entire premise of this story happened while I was researching another book. I happened upon a picture of a KDKA radio broadcaster during the 1920s. (KDKA was the very first commercial radio station in the entire world.) The caption of the picture read “Unknown Vocalist.” My initial response was, “How sad! This woman was part of history and her name wasn’t even recorded.” But then, my mind started posing questions like, “What if she didn’t want her name to be remembered? What if she wanted to remain unknown? What if she hid her identity in order to remain safe? What if she was a mobster’s daughter?” And then the story bloomed from there.

So now this book is out of my hands and into yours. I truly hope you enjoy Kate’s journey❤️

"A sob sank into my bones. I didn't know what world I'd stepped into, but I wanted out. Away from men who accused my Papa of murder. Away from policemen who could discover my identity and haul me away."

"I could change my name. My identity. But at the end of the day, I was still the child of a criminal."

After crossing an ocean to locate her beloved Papa, Catarina Salvastano soon realized trouble had either found or followed her to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the family bakery had been vandalized to the point of utter destruction and her father was nowhere to be found, except in the headlines of the local newspaper. Troubling rumors swirled around his sudden disappearance following the death of a highly respected police commissioner, and according to many, Hugo Salvastano was a cold blooded killer.

Changing her name to Kate Chamberlin, Catarina strives to remain invisible, using her lovely voice and keyboard skills as a musician for KDKA radio while she continues to search for the truth about her family. What she never expected? A veiled threat and the protection of a man with a vested interest in finding the man who had murdered his father.

Private investigator Rhett Jennings has asked Kate so many questions and received so few answers in return. Is she purposefully hiding information? Or perhaps she simply doesn't trust him; after all, her co-worker has fed her plenty of information about the womanizer that Rhett used to be.

What begins as an interesting story set squarely in the midst of mobster territory in the 1920's underworld metamorphose into an impressive display of plotting skills and character development. The escalating magnetism between Kate and Rhett is tough, tense, and altogether tender, flowing steadily towards a conclusion that any and every reader will applaud! "Be still my heart", was my response.

"God knew I needed you."

"Thou art my hiding place. Thou shalt preserve me from troubles; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance." Wait a minute! "God sang?"

1923-1924 Pittsburgh

Lovely! The author does a wonderful job of weaving in historical details from the 1920s into the fabric of the novel. Catarina Salvastano immigrates from Italy believing her father is ill or in some other way needing help. Upon arriving in Pittsburgh, she soon learns her father is a wanted man for multiple murders and a notorious mobster. To protect herself, she assumes a new identity: Kate Chamberlin.

Private investigator Rhett Jennings is on a mission to avenge his fathers death and can't focus on anything but finding Hugo Salvastano, Kate's dad.

The amount of mystery in the novel was a pleasant surprise. The story was engaging from start to finish. I'm not sure I've put this in a review before but I loved the final two lines of the novel. The atmosphere of 1920s Pittsburgh came alive under the pen of Rachel Scott McDaniel. I could hear the steel mills, feel the grime and see the gray tint to everything.

Loved the author's note at the end sharing additional historical details and which parts of the novel were factual. So much of it was!

Highly recommended for fans of historical romance and mystery.

My gratitude to the author and publisher Ally Press for a complimentary electronic copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

I guess it's a good problem to have when the only thing you can do is give an author 5 stars every time you read one of their stories.

I wanted to read this book for 2 reasons: 1) the author and 2) the cover. I had no idea what the book was about. That's how much I love this author, and once again, she knocked it out of the park!

We initially meet Catarina as she arrives in America searching for her father. Unfortunately, what she finds doesn't give her hope, but forces her to assume a new name to shield her from the crime boss name. Goodness, I loved Catarina aka Kate Chamberlain. She's so innocent and kind, nothing like the father everyone despises. My heart went out to her as she tried to hide herself at a radio station while trying to figure out what happened to her father.

She immediately runs into Rhett Jennings, but months later their paths cross again and he will do anything to keep her safe. Unfortunately, he doesn't know the truth about Kate and for the reader, it's a mix of feeling sorry and hopefully all at the same time for both of them. Through the author's writing you can feel the struggle both Kate and Rhett go through. She knows she's lying to him and he's struggling with his own damaged past.

I have to admit, this story got my heart racing on numerous occasions! You'll get so entwined in the story you feel like you're in the moment! Whether we're following Kate into her dark apartment or she and Rhett are having a "moment" your heart rate will spike! All in a good way because the author's writing is incredible! My imagination was transported to the 1920's and I honestly don't think any other authors write as wonderfully as she does for that time period, especially when it comes to speakeasies.

There are SO many things to love about this story I can't possibly touch each one in my review. You don't want to miss out on this fantastic read!

*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.

Bootlegging, speakeasies, flappers, KDKA Pittsburgh and hidden identities. Ms. McDaniel takes us to the underworld of 1920s Pittsburgh in this suspenseful tale about a daughter looking for her father. It is aptly releasing on the 101st Anniversary of the radio station, KDKA.
Kate Chamberlin travels from Italy to Pittsburgh to search for her father whom she has not seen for 17 years. Is he the papa she remembers or are the rumors true that he is a mobster? After she receives a cryptic note, private detective Rhett Jennings becomes her protector, little knowing that their pasts are connected.
Through all the confusion and danger, Kate holds on to her faith. “God, You are my hiding place. The prayer had become like a mending lyric to the broken melody in her heart.”
An intricate and interesting story where things are not what they seem to be. Polished and well plotted with excitement, romance and a faith thread permeating it all. You will cheer when it comes to a thrilling conclusion. I love the Roaring Twenties World of Rachel Scott McDaniel.

Another impressive, immersive novel from Rachel McDaniel! The Mobster's Daughter kept me turning the pages until way past my bedtime, only to find the plot tangling even further--in the best possible sense. The final unraveling and conclusion satisfied in every way. Not only does McDaniel create compelling characters and tension against a richly historical backdrop, but she tells the story in prose that sings. Bravo!

Happy sigh. Every Rachel Scott McDaniel book is consistently good. And although she's quickly becoming the Queen of the 1920s, each story is its own, with distinct characters, themes, and historical settings.

The characters in The Mobster's Daughter may be McDaniel's deepest to date. The story didn't lend itself to as many laugh-out-loud lines as others of her books, but this was more than made up for with truly beautiful descriptions and prose throughout. Case in point: "He didn't want to fall into love, tripping, grappling for purchase. No, he wanted to step into it, footing sure, eyes open. Knowing full well who she was, and choosing her not despite it, but because of it. For who she was made her the beautiful soul he craved." Etc.

I can't say too much about the story without giving away spoilers, but it has it all--suspense, romance, fascinating historical events and details, character growth, a gentle spiritual arc, and an absolutely incredible kiss scene! You get the full 20s experience with mobsters, speakeasies, and fringe, but also the heartache of regular people trying to combat the darkness of that world armed with their faith and character.

I don't know if there has ever been another book that had me wanting to hurl it across the room as many times as I desired to with this one!! Just WOW! Talk about intense!

There were so many plot twists that had my mind reeling and fingers turning pages so quickly. I even legit gasped out loud in the middle of the night at one of the surprises toward the end. Definitely had the suspense factor with this novel!

Kate Chamberlin (Catarina Salvastano) was a strong leading lady, although she certainly had her weaknesses that made her relatable. I felt she was a bit impulsive too, and she really drove me crazy at times with her decisions to take things into her own hands. Thankfully, things worked out for her in these instances.

Everhett (Rhett) Jennings was a downright swoony hero. There's just something about a detective dressed in a suit and carrying a pistol. Haha! Rhett certainly had a soiled past, but I liked that the story begins with him being a changed man, striving to live a better lifestyle, and reading the Bible. But he still has his struggles too, as we all do. I hurt for him and his sorrow, and I ached with him and Kate as things got strained and truth was brought to light, and the bottom just seemed to fall out of everything! Ugh! I think I held my breath through half of this book.

I can't say I've read too many books in this era of the Roaring 20s, but of the few I have picked up, I will say there is a certain level of content that comes with the territory (speakeasies, alcohol, etc.), but I feel the author handled it well, and kept things relatively clean so I never felt overly uncomfortable and yet stayed true to how I imagine things really were in this setting. I appreciate that.

It did take me a little bit to get into the story, but once I got acquainted with the characters and was able to grasp and follow the story, I was sucked in. I think this'll be a re-read in the future.

Overall, a greatly researched historical fiction romance novel with the fake relationship trope and a lesson on letting go of bitterness. I'm glad I finally bought the book and read it!!

'It didn't matter what good I could accomplish. I could change my name. My identity. But at the end of the day I'd always be the mobster's daughter.'

Wowee. This book packs a punch and will have you hooked from the very first chapter.

The suspense in this was amazing. The mystery? Superb. I loved following the clues and trying to figure out just how this book would end up before it actually did it. McDaniel did such a great job weaving this tale and giving just enough info with the clues to throw suspicion everywhere!

I loved every second of it.

The romance in this book was so fun to read. Cue the swoon because this is a forced proximity and "dating" of convenience with Pittsburgh's number 1 Casanova. The story becomes better as he's a reformed Casanova and his redemption arc is so, so good.

If you love romance, suspense, mystery and a light Christian thread-then this needs to be on your TBR!

Content: mobster violence (murder, shootings and drugging specifically), former rake with redemption plot, parent abandonment, false identity, romance-kisses only.

The Mobster's Daughter is one of those books that gives you a shiver of anticipation just thinking about it. Italian mobsters, hidden identities, corrupt law enforcement, secret musical codes, a romeo-and-juliet type romance. What more could you want in a story? I don't usually enjoy books set in the 20's, mostly because I hate the fashion. Silly, I know, but there it is. Yet I enjoyed The Mobster's Daughter immensely! Set during such a turbulant time in history, this story is rich with detail and history. I found the back and forth switch from first to third person a strange choice, not that I haven't seen it in fiction before, however it's not my favourite. The mystery in the book was really well done and kept me guessing to the end, and what an ending! Kate, or Catarina, was so lovable! No matter how much she tried to blend into the background, her kind heart just made her shine brightly. Rhett is my absolutely favourite kind of hero, the gruff protector! He's one of those characters that you wish was real so that you could marry him yourself! Their romance was realy adorable with the sweetest kisses!

I was gifted a complimentary copy of this book however all views and opinions expressed are my own.

two things before we begin: a) I stayed up FAR too late to finish this and only have mild regrets and b) there are only a handful of authors I can think of who get 5-stars from me as quickly and easily as Rachel. I'll read anything and everything she writes, I'm simply obsessed with her (not in a creepy way but like... everything I read from her makes me love her more)

Hidden identities + the glitz and grit of the 1920s + star-crossed romance + messages of God's forgiveness and grace, this was the BEST way I could have kicked off my 2025 reading and I am delighted by it. Kate and Rhett both won my heart so fast. There's so much faith content, as well, which always makes me happy. (they both grapple with God's kindness and forgiveness and ultimately remind each other to run back to Him and strengthen each other's faith like stahp, my heart is a puddle on the floor)

The whole mystery was excellent, too. I had a few theories but I wasn't sure which of them would be right (uh... not many of them were lol) which kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next.

I loved it, 5 stars, 10/10 time, I recommend. Thanks for another great read, Rachel. Catch you in the next one. 🫶

Wow! Get lost in the 1920's world of corruption, murder, bootleggers, the mob, romance, and the beginnings of the radio in Pittsburgh. With every detail, the story came alive. This book has it all, beautiful writing, a compelling page-turning story, suspense, authentic characters that had me rooting for them, a swoon worthy kiss, and huge twists and turns that I did NOT see coming. The Mobsters Daughter by Rachel Scott McDaniel has everything a good story should have. I highly recommend this excellent historical fiction tale!

September 28, 1923 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

When Kate Chamberlin (aka Catarina Salvastano) received what was perceived as a death threat note, private investigator Rhett Jennings took his assignment of protecting her very seriously. The note had an S on it, which was purported to come from a crime lord named Hugo Salvastano. Notes like these had only been found on dead people.

Until she arrived in America from Italy nine months before, she believed her father was a kind, loving baker. Quickly she found out he was not what she thought, but he was none other the crime lord of Pittsburg's underworld.

One fateful night during a confrontation Hugo Salvastano betrayed his own brothers, killing them and Rhett's father.

Twists and turns in this story kept me reading all day. Very good book with a gentle faith element.

Much of the history in this book about the extreme poverty in southern Italy was my family's history. Many, if not most, left the small fishing village in Sicily to find a better life in either New York or California. My father warned me against the family that settled in the New York/Pittsburgh areas, that they learned and lived a very different style of life than those on the west coast. The family who settled in fishing towns in California had humble beginnings, but survived easily.

This is my first experience with Rachel Scott McDaniel and it certainly won't be my last.

Oh my mercy – I simply love it when I read an author for the first time and the book sweeps me off my feet! Such was the case with Rachel Scott McDaniel’s newest book, The Mobster’s Daughter. I admit that while I love historical fiction in (almost) all its forms, I was nervous about a plot with a mobster. How much danger and intrigue was I going to be in for? Turns out, just enough to make it suspenseful while focusing more focus on Kate and Rhett’s electrifying connection to each other.

If you want heart-pounding chemistry, these two main characters were full to the brim with it. There were so many moments when I wanted to scream at Rhett to kiss her already, but oh, what a gentleman he was! Y’all – it’s enough to make you swoon!

After only one book, I know that this author has just cemented herself on my favorite author list, and I’ll be “on go” when it comes to all new releases. Now pardon me while I go see what else that she’s written that I can get my hands on… :)

Catarina Salvastano only came to America because she was worried about her father. He left her behind in Italy many years ago because he felt it was best. His latest letter seemed a bit desperate. So in early fall 1923, she boards a ship and heads to Pittsburgh. When she arrives, she cannot find him but does discover that he is leading a different life than she imagined. How did she not recognize that he was a frontman for crime?

Having nowhere else to go, she disguises herself at Kate Chamberlin and seeks employment with a radio station. When her life is threatened, she lets her boss reach out to a private investigator. Rhett Jennings may have retired early from the police officer, but he still acts like he has a badge. He is quite skeptical that Kate is not involved with crime. What will it take for him to believe her? What will it take for her to be willing to tell him who she really is?

As usual, author Rachel Scott McDaniel has done impeccable research. I truly felt like I had stepped back in time and was walking the Pennsylvania streets. The Roaring Twenties seems to be her sweet spot as she has a way of relaying what life would have been like in an interesting and intriguing way. Although this is now her third book featuring a strong heroine, they have all been unique. Very few details have overlapped.

But one part that was similar was her focus again on music. Radio was a newer device back then, so being able to listen to familiar songs together would have been thrilling. I liked this part of the book.

The secondary characters were also significant in this book. Charlie will melt your heart. Peggy is the kind of friend everyone wants. The others are interesting as well, but to mention more might involve spoilers.

Throughout the book, there is plenty of suspenseful scenes - just enough to keep the reader properly on edge. I did not guess all of the details. Because they are trying to find out more about the past, the mystery component is equally as strong as the intrigue aspects.

And while there is a romantic element, this does not overshadow the rest of the book with the connection feeling like it was properly paced. The thoughtful consideration that they showed toward each other was elevated more than physical expression,. I appreciated that. But don't worry - there is chemistry involved still.

I did receive an advanced copy of this book. Because Rachel is now a "must-read" author for me, so I was quite excited to get to read the book early. I wanted to write a review. All opinions are my own.

I was happy to dive into the 1920’s again through the pages of Rachel McDaniel’s latest book, The Mobster’s daughter. The imagery painted in the beginning of this book was so visually descriptive that the reader can almost touch the soot stained buildings through the pages. McDaniel is exceptional at capturing the spirit of the 1920’s and and immersing the reader in the plot of her novels.
This story was intriguing and it seemed like each chapter that ended had a way of hooking you into the next! The characters each had personal struggles to overcome all the while dealing with the mystery and danger ever present until the conclusion of the book! Rhett was charismatic and easy to like, while Kate was reserved and guarded. I love the progression and growth of these characters! The gradual pace of character development really makes these characters, Kate especially, seem genuine and their romance believable.
The last chapters of the book were a bit nail biting as things in the story all come crashing to a conclusion. It was full of answers, emotions, and wrapped up this story perfectly. I read this book slowly, savoring each chapter and I absolutely loved it. Rachel McDaniel is a must buy author for me! Historical Romance fans will love this novel of mobsters, radio singers, and romance!

The Mobster’s Daughter had everything I love in a story - an endearing and relatable heroine, a protective hero with integrity and a plot that keeps me guessing. I genuinely could not have predicted the background with our heroine’s family or the identity of the villain. Both mysteries kept me turning page after page. Bravo to the author! I absolutely loved these characters and my time in this world, and I love that Rachel doesn’t shy away from biblical truth in her stories. Rachel makes the 1920’s come alive in her books. Her passion for the time period and Pittsburgh is evident.

This is the first book I have read by Rachel Scott McDaniel. You will be captivated from the very beginning of this novel. It is set in the 1920s in Pittsburgh with the daughter of a mob boss. One interesting part is that the daughter, Catarina Salvastano, had no idea of his profession until arriving from overseas. Now she has to figure out how to survive and not let anyone know of her real identity. She changes her name to Kate Chamberlain. I found myself empathizing with Kate because she has no control over who her father is or what he does but yet her life is completely affected by it. It gets harder for her to hide her identity when she is threatened because the investigator that comes to help her might not be so understanding if he were to find out her real name. This book has a lot of suspense and intriguing situations along with some romance. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a page turner.

The 1920s is probably my least favorite era of modern history, but McDaniel might be making a fan out of me! This story was full of mystery, suspense, and twists I didn’t see coming. I was on the edge of my seat for pretty much the whole of the book. There is always the underlying question of who can truly be trusted in this era of history because of the corruption, so that added another layer of suspense I really loved.
While the plot itself is such a ride, the characters are what made the story for me. I loved following Kate. Her sweet and reserved personality is an interesting contrast to her family and the grimy backdrop of Pittsburg. Rhett is a fierce protector, and is determined to do the right thing. And their chemistry is just sparkling. The romance that develops between them is really sweet, and I love how their character growth is aided by their friendship.
Themes of redemption, forgiveness, and mercy are done so well here… even got me a little emotional at one point.
I enjoyed this so much, and could definitely see this added to my favorites list!

Catarina moves from Italy to Pittsburgh, after receiving a letter from her father that makes her fear for his well being. Once she arrives, she finds shocking information that her father is not the same man he was before he left Italy. He is accused of many crimes including murder. With no where to go, and not wanting to get wrapped up in her father’s affairs, Caterina builds a new life for herself disguised as Kate Chamberlin. One day she receives a note with her father’s initials and it appears to be a threat.

Rhett Jennings Private investigator has had one mission, to find the mobster who killed his father, Kates letter just might be the clue he’s looking for.

This was my first book by Rachel Scott McDaniel and it won’t be my last, I really enjoyed it. Her writing was beautiful, and full of lush, historical imagery. It was clean and moved at a steady pace. Lots of mystery, action and intrigue with a backdrop nestled in the 1920s. The faith elements were wonderfully done and the romance was sweet. I liked that there were historical facts listed at the end. It’s always awesome to learn while reading. Looking forward to reading more from this author. Would recommend!

This story has been on my TBR for far too long! I am thrilled I finally got a chance to read/listen to this fantastic story. Kate and Rhett are perfect for the storyline and easy to like. The story itself was super, with all sorts of exciting moments and twists. While I wasn’t overly surprised at the bad guy, I wasn’t completely convinced until the reveal who the bad guy would be. Great read!

Ohhhh, this read was just ... gorgeous. The Roaring Twenties came to life in such vivid color, I was so sad to see the story end!

Kate and Rhett (what a wonderful name, _Rhett_) were everything I wanted to see in the two main characters, and their story showed such depth, emotion, pain, and beauty.

The gospel was threaded beautifully throughout, and I loved how Kate in particular drew strength from her faith at critical moments.

Truly a delightful read, and one I'd happily reread over and over.

I received an eARC of the book from the author. All opinions are my own.

Wow. What a book! It’s taken me a few days to gather my thoughts after having finished the book to write this review and I still can’t get over how much romance, mystery, suspense, history, and faith are delightfully threaded together in one novel. I’ve really enjoyed all of Rachel Scott McDaniel’s books to date but this book….this book is love at first page. If you enjoy historical romance, you need to read this book.

Kate’s first person voice is refreshing, compassionate, and quite lovely despite her fears and secrets. Rhett’s third person voice is protective, loyal, and determined as he seeks vengeance for his father’s death. Yet nothing is as it seems and the story will take you on a wild joyful ride with twists, loops, and turns at every corner. I loved learning about Pittsburgh’s KDKA radio station; the overt criminal activity and bribery of the law enforcement in 1920s Pittsburgh was eye-opening.

This is one of my favorite reads of 2021! I received the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

With evocative prose, Rachel Scott McDaniel sweeps the imagination off its feet and drops it in the Roaring Twenties, wearing a new pair of T-strap shoes!

“The Mobster’s Daughter” distills the atmospheric haze of a Noir film, the heel-kicking excitement of the Jazz Age, and a faking dating romance between a reserved radio singer and a reformed rogue turned private eye into a concoction as intoxicating as moonshine. A riveting story of redemption with multifaceted characters.

The Mobster’s Daughter is definitely a must read! Rachel Scott McDaniel is quickly becoming a favorite author. I love her endearing characters, beautiful prose, and amazing stories. Set in 1920’s Pittsburg, this book has all the elements: hidden identity, a swoon worthy romance, a well researched historical time period, mobsters, bootleggers, corruption, suspense, mystery, and faith. It was definitely hard to put down!

“I had a heart that’d been built to outlast earthquakes, withstand stormy seas, but to stare into the eyes of a man I could never have? That was pain beyond recovery.”

Catarina Salvastano has been through a lot in her life. After surviving an earthquake in Italy that killed her beloved mother, she survives one parental loss only to be left with an American missionary family while her father leaves for America. As an adult, she receives a bizarre letter from him indicating he’s in trouble. She decides to leave her beloved homeland to journey to America.

When she arrives in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, her father’s bakery is in shambles and he’s nowhere to be found. Worse yet, he’s accused of being a mobster and killing not only a policeman, but his own brothers and anyone who gets in his way. Catarina has a difficult time reconciling this with the man she knows and loves. Threatened by another mobster’s men - Big Dante, she changes her name to Kate Chamberlin and takes a job as a musician for the KDKA broadcasting station. After receiving a mysterious threat at the station, her boss decides to hire private investigator and ex-cop Rhett Jennings.

Poor Rhett! He was definitely put to the test in this book. When he first meets Kate, he’s taken with her beautiful voice, quiet beauty, and kind manner. He’d like nothing more than to find Salvastano and put him away for good, especially after the man killed his father. Because of his bitter hatred, Kate hesitates to share her true identity and tries hard not to fall for the handsome investigator. While he’s protecting her, she’s trying to find her father and figure out the truth.

This book was full of so many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. The romance, ah the romance, is off the charts! The tension between Rhett and Kate is palpable. That first kiss is amazing! Rhett definitely is put through the ringer as he tries to exercise his new found faith and remain a gentleman. He is such an amazing character and definitely one of my favorite heroes. He’s charming, intelligent, thoughtful, and extremely patient!

Kate is definitely a sympathetic character. She’s beautiful, kind, gentle, and the exact opposite of what an imagined mobster’s daughter would be. While it’s understandable why she hides her identity, it makes for a lot of suspense because you just know that at some point the truth will come out. On top of this, there are the ongoing threats against her life, but who’s behind them?

Full of action, romance, forgiveness, and a story that will pull you in and not let go, this is definitely one you don’t want to miss. Highly recommend and look forward to reading more by this author. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

When Catarina Salvastano arrives in America in search of the father that left her alone in Italy many years ago, she is shocked to discover that he has disappeared, rumored dead, and is a notorious mobster. Fearing for her safety, she takes on a new identity as Kate Chamberlin and finds a job using her musical talents at KDKA radio.

All is going swell until she receives a mysterious note with a veiled threat. Enter the handsome private investigator, Rhett Jennings. Only problem is Rhett is on the hunt for the man that killed his father, and the guilty man is Kate’s very own missing father. How can she accept Rhett’s protection when her father is responsible for so much hurt and pain? But she is unable to convince him that she doesn’t need his assistance without revealing her connection to the Salvastano crime family. So together they try to unravel the mystery of the notes and her father’s whereabouts. These two quickly find themselves as “star-crossed lovers” when she must tell Rhett the agonizing truth of her identity.

Loved this one from @rachel_scott_mcdaniel! It is filled with lots of faith, mystery, several shocking revelations, and some very sweet and swoony moments. Rhett is a true gentleman, fierce protector, and he is determined to bring the guilty to justice. Kate is caring and kind, helping others that are less fortunate and giving hope and light to those who have little.

Definitely give this one a read!
