Pest Control

Rate this book
Rhys has a simple life in the backwoods. All he needs is his trusty compound bow, impressive book collection, warm cabin, full food cellar, and himself. So, when Rhys discovers a sly wolf stealing his kills, which are supposed to last him through the coming winter, he’s forced to set a trap and kill the pest.

But, instead of the wolf, Rhys finds a mysterious (and naked) man named Everett.

After learning Everett has nowhere else to go, Rhys hesitantly invites him to stay and heal. But he doesn’t get much time to adjust to life with his eccentric (and stupidly handsome) house guest, not when winter arrives early and with a vengeance.

Cooped up in the cabin together for months, will Rhys learn to love himself and another? Or will hidden truths and empty stomachs snuff out the flames of love and life?

DNF @ 15%.

The MCs come off super immature, like two 14 year olds. And I feel like I’m just reading a guide on how to hunt and shoot a bow. I don’t want to read pages and pages of that. Even the promise of fisting and knotting can’t entice me to continue.

Absolutely worth the read!! The main character (Rhys) is super relatable to me, and the way the relationship transforms between the characters is so heart-warming. There's a solid combination of serious themes and comical moments throughout the book, which makes it easy to get invested in the characters while still being able to chuckle. Also, it's great seeing gay/LGBTQ+ representation without the storyline being totally defined by their sexual identities.

Frustrating. That pretty much sums up Pest Control for me. From a less than believable plot, to characters that never read as fully developed, there just wasn’t much to like about this particular book. As a general rule, I try to be kinder in my reviews because I appreciate how hard authors work to create their works and get them published. But with Pest Control, there were just too many issues to confront.

The overall plot to Pest Control never makes much sense. Man finds guy in a wolf trap, takes him home to heal. Fine. But then the story tacks on a seemingly endless winter, huge time jumps, and glaring plot devices and everything falls apart.

This was such a beautiful, slow burn, forced proximity (I love those), romance. Everett had such a sweet and innocent personality. This story truly touched my heart throughout so many of the touching scenes that they had shared together. They both fit so perfectly for one another and I appreciated the wonderful happy ending. Nicely done.
