This book was a gift from my friend, Jackie, and when we worked together, we enjoyed sharing stories of the crazy stuff that was happening at work when we were in retrograde. We viewed retrograde as a time when things get messed up; this book focuses on the positive impact retrograde can have on things. Am I convinced? hmmmm.
The rest of this review is the key highlights from the book. Most of the book was more of a reference guide for when Mercury retrograde happens at various times of the year.
These days, with the rising interest in astrology, more and more people, even non-astrologers, seem to have heard about Mercury retrograde – when Mercury appears to move backward in the sky. That said, there are also many misunderstandings surrounding Mercury retrograde – mostly that it’s all doom and gloom or somehow bad luck, which it’s not. This is why we wrote this book: to dispel the myths and help you get the most of this planetary phenomenon which has a potentially positive side to it.
Obviously, planets don’t actually turn around and start moving backwards, even though, from our viewpoint on Earth, it appears as if they do. It’s all an optical illusion, due to the relative positions of the planet and Earth and how they move around the sun.
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and its orbit is shorter than Earth’s – a mere 88 days compared to our 365 days, which means that Mercury experiences four years in the time it takes us to complete one orbit of the Sun. Mercury’s shorter orbit creates an optical illusion in that it appears to speed past Earth, slow down, and then move in a backward loop, giving us Mercury retrograde.
For Mercury retrograde, pay especially close attention to communication, transport, and new technology. Mercury also rules buying and selling, contracts and agreements, and important documents.
The effect of Mercury retrograde is strongest during the shadow phases, when it first turns retrograde and when it changes direction to become direct again. However, it will have an effect on the world for the whole time it’s retrograde, as well as just before and after.
This time I didn't read the whole book because it's more of a reference book. There was an introductory chapter on how to handle Mercury retrogrades in general. This was followed by handling Mercury retrogrades in fire, earth, air and water signs, before going into retrogrades in individual signs and individual solar houses. The book rounded off with handling retrogrades when there's a relevant planet conjunction or square, topped with an appendix detailing the dates of Mercury retrogrades up to and including 2032. Everything was easy to understand, but to get the most out of it, you should definitely get a birth chart.
A solid little guide through Mercury retrograde. It explains them at about 3 levels, so the more you know about astrology, the more you will get from the material. The info is useful for each retrograde, and considers signs and personal placements. This is a book you can return to at every retrograde for specific info and impacts. 4 1/2 stars
