Mim Cohen roams the world in a travelling bookshop, with her dad and brother and a horse called Flossy. Flossy leads them where she will, to the place where they're needed most ... the place where the perfect book will find its way home.
Now Mim has arrived on a charming Greek Island, where a wedding is about to take place. Everyone is excited - everyone, that is, except the bride and groom.
Mim knows they're here to help Anjelica, the bride. To stop the wedding. To set her free to follow her dreams.
If only Anjelica would read the right book, the one Mim gave her. If only she would stop reading the wrong book.
From award-winning author Katrina Nannestad and beloved illustrator Cheryl Orsini comes an enchanting series for young readers.
Katrina Nannestad is an award-winning Australian author. Her books include The Girl Who Brought Mischief, the Girl, the Dog and the Writer series, the Olive of Groves series, the Red Dirt Diaries series, the Lottie Perkins series and Bungaloo Creek.
Katrina grew up in country New South Wales in a neighborhood stuffed full of happy children. Her adult years have been spent teaching, raising boys, perfecting her recipe for chocolate-chip bickies and pursuing her love of stories. She now lives near Bendigo with her family and an exuberant black whippet called Olive.
Mim Cohen along with her dad and little brother Nat, roamed the world in their travelling bookshop. Leading the way is Flossy the horse, and several other delightful creatures - but it's Flossy who's in charge. And this time, when they arrived on a small Greek Island, it didn't take Mim long to work out that they were there to help Anjelica and Stavros, the bride and groom of their upcoming wedding.
As the islanders arrived at the bookshop, Mim's dad found the book everyone needed not the one they wanted. And they often came back for more. The bookshop was magical and knew what its customers needed. But could the bookshop - along with Mim, Nat and their dad - help the bride and groom?
Mim and the Woeful Wedding is the 2nd in the Travelling Bookshop series by Aussie author Katrina Nannestad and it was light and entertaining, and lots of fun. Great for middle grade readers, a series which would make an ideal gift with Christmas coming up, and I have no hesitation in recommending it.
There’s trouble in paradise in Mim’s second adventure that takes her and the amazing Travelling Bookshop to a picturesque village on a Greek island.
The Travelling Bookshop could turn up anywhere with Flossy the horse expertly sniffing out where the bookshop is needed most so that Mim, her brother Nat, and their dad Zeddy can hand out the perfect books to the locals. The Greek island upon which the bookshop has just landed is a buzz of excitement as preparations for a wedding are well underway. Everyone is looking forward to the big day except Anjelica, the bride.
Mim is sure that if Anjelica would just read the right book then everything would be ok but with Zeddy handing out the books that the bookshop chooses rather than the books the locals would like it appears that Anjelica and Stavros are heading for a woeful wedding. Can Mim help them follow their hearts and their dreams…
In a charming tale that celebrates a love of books, words and letters, Katrina Nannestad takes readers to Greece and the most picture-perfect of little islands with its wonderful ocean views, pretty fishing harbour, quaint restaurants, little laneways, donkeys for getting up the steep hills and delicious food (mmm baklava). It is the dream setting for a wedding, if only the bride had her heart set on it. Books though have the power to change lives and despite Zeddy’s seemingly random distribution of books there is method to his madness, as he says, ‘the bookshop is never wrong’.
Nim, a collector of words, and her brother Nat, a collector of letters, are as quirky as the deceptively spacious caravan to which they call home. Step through the doors of the Travelling Bookshop and you’ll find books piled high on impossibly tall shelves, comfy chairs to relax in, fancy rugs and even a fountain. You might even find the book that you never knew you needed, just trust Zeddy when he gives you a book on cupcakes when you really wanted one about boats.
With gentle messages about following your dreams and being true to yourself, The Travelling Bookshop: Mim and the Woeful Wedding is a lovely read that is as sparkly as the ocean that surrounds the tiny Greek island. Black and white illustrations by Cheryl Orsini help bring the adventure and the fabulous island setting to life.
The Travelling Bookshop chooses its destinations carefully, there’s always a reason for it to appear where it does. I wonder where it will be popping up next and who will be in need of its help?
With huge thanks to Harper Collins and ABC Books for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review.
This time, The Travelling Bookshop is in Greece, but it hasn't stopped moving. It's been searching. Flossy was unhitched last night before they stopped, so why is it moving? The old wooden caravan goes where Flossy takes it. Then it stops exactly where the Books inside are needed. It's rattling and going fast downhill. Flossy is pushing it.
They get on a Ferry barge that takes them to an island. Mim has been rudely awoken by her little brother, Nat. He was trying to push her eyes together so she would have one eye like Cyclops in the story their dad read them.
When they go ashore, Flossy takes them fast along a road and stops abruptly near a fish shop. There is a cafe ahead, a blue harbour, and a woman in bathers swimming on her back, waving from the water. 'Greetings! Welcome to the most beautiful island in Greece!'
They have arrived, Zedekiah, Miriam-Rose, Nat and Daisy the goat, Coco the cockatoo, and all the books. Dad unhitches Flossy and leads her away in search of fresh water.
That's when the magic happens. Fish and kittens arrive. The octopus touches the dictionary, and the words change to Greek. Mim knows it because she can read it.
Everyone in the village is excited and planning for a wedding on the weekend. Anjelica Xenakis is a waitress in the fish restaurant, and Stavros Mavros is a fisherman. Their parents plan to expand the business after they marry. Mim is worried because everyone in the village is excited except for Anjelica and Stavros.
The villagers come to the bookshop. Nat was in love with the letter O and drew Os all over his body. Then Xander Xenakis comes to the bookshop. He's collecting donkeys to help take the older villagers up to the church for the wedding. Nat decides he loves X.
This book is full of humour and fun, family picnics and parties with locals. They discover delicious new foods like baklava and hidden houses with tiny rooms and beautiful decorations. Mim wonders why her father hands out books about making and decorating cupcakes, and a book on art for Stavros the fisherman.
If you haven't read the first book in this series, it's a good place to start. I loved it and laughed out loud again at the antics of a flying goat, a boy without pants, a cockatoo who ate nuts and the wedding that should never go ahead, or, should it?
‘The right book might just change your life … Mim Cohen roams the world in a travelling bookshop, with her dad and brother and a horse called Flossy. Flossy leads them where she will, to the place where they’re needed most … the place where the perfect book will find its way home. Mim knows they’re here to help Anjelica, the bride. To stop the wedding. To set her free to follow her dreams. If only Anjelica would read the right book, the one Mim gave her. If only she would stop reading the wrong book.’ I loved this book. I was a huge fan of Mim And The Baffling Bully so I was both excited and nervous to get my hands on this book. It turns out I had no need to be nervous as this book is every bit as good as its predecessor. This is one of those books that makes you smile and leaves you feeling warm and happy. The whole idea of a magical travelling bookshop is enough to warm your heart but to then have this really fun and sweet story and some truly funny elements and there is nothing not to love about this book. Katrina Nannestad has done a fantastic job with the book. The story was wise and moving while also containing a lovely message. The characters were fun and innocent which means that the reader gets to learn with the characters as the story progresses. All of this is perfectly captured by the truly beautiful writing. What more could you want? How about some awesome images? Okay. Adding to Katrina Nannestad’s wonderful story are fabulous illustrations by Cheryl Orsini. These illustrations are strategically placed throughout the book and perfectly complement the story being told. I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about this book. If you have a Middle-Grade reader in your life The Travelling Bookshop is definitely a series that you should introduce them to. Mim And The Woeful Wedding by Katrina Nannestad is the perfect addition to The Travelling Bookshop series.
Did you love Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books when you were a child? One of the most entrancing features of these stories for me was the independence of the children – especially when they’d set off on a horse-drawn caravan adventure. There is a thrill for youngsters of tiny places to call home – caravans, cubby houses, tree houses.
The Travelling Bookshop stories tap into that, and add a dash of magic, resulting in a great read for kids. They are madcap tributes to words, books, family, making new friends and exploring new places. There is also a theme of accepting and celebrating difference, and the important roles that imagination and playfulness have in our lives.
The second of the travelling bookshops series. A perfect intro to magical realism for grades 1-4. This time Mim and her family find themselves on a Greek Island as a young waitress and a local fisherman prepare to marry. Great exploration of being true to yourself, family relationships and doing what makes you happy.
Really good . The difference with what is a book and what is imagine and what is real . And the finding the right books for the right people . The right stories to happen . Stopping the wedding . For the bride follow her dreams . Becoming herself just be the right book . And creating her own things in her caravan too . And being a good friend to Anjelica.
Flossie has taken the family to a Greek Island this time where a couple is preparing for marriage. This tale was such fun to read and I really enjoyed the twits and turns that got us to the end of the book. I nightly recommend this even for an adult to read and enjoy. The fantasy of the bookshop is delightful.
I loved this book and gave it a 4 because I loved how the dad didn’t give the book they wanted but he gave the book they need. And the concept of this book was the mysterious because it was about a weddings and how the family gave good books to the families that were getting married. This book got confusing at times but then it got me so interested that my mom had to drag me away for dinner.
A wonderful story about being true to yourself. This story is set in Greece and it is probably my favourite in The Travelling Bookshop series. A great middle grade read full of wonderful characters, flavourful food, humour and heart, all in true Katrina Nannestad style.
Another absolutely delightful read. 7yo kept reading ahead by herself since she was enjoying it so much, so I’d need to catch up a couple of chapters myself each time we sat down to read together :)
