This book was part of the curriculum for a course I took in computer systems and networking.
While dry, you can't fault its didactics. Even difficult topics are clearly explained, with plenty of diagrams and examples that, if you stay focused, aren't too hard to follow. I'm actually quite impressed with the pedagogy on display here. Every time I found myself wondering "but what about..." the answer would be immediately forthcoming.
Still, it's not exactly entertaining.
I used to be a professional network admin back in the late nineties, and have been doing web programming since 1999, so I thought that I knew networking more than most people. Well, now I know even more about TCP/IP etc.
It was informative while not being an absolute slog to get through, was actually quite enjoyable. Usually these types of books annoy me to no end, but Kurose explains things in a simple and understandable way. He found a good balance between the informative and expressive. I would've given it 4 stars but I'm giving it 5 just to spite you Mark.
"The book" about networking. If you have to select one book about computer networking, go no further. Very detailed, with python and wireshark examples and exercises. They also have a dedicated site for the course. Highly recommended.
