Extra sensory perception, a xenophobic culture, and a forgotten relic beyond known space. Cal Spicer, captain of the independent starship the Far Sea, has a reputation for his keen intuition and his ability to find what others cannot. He has made a career of it, while deftly keeping the real source of his talent hidden. Now, when the three ‘person’ crew of the Far Sea make the joint decision to commit to a job ferrying one of the intolerant Ascetic’s of the feared Almd-Tg-Cee, they are understandably wary.
But nothing could have prepared them for what happens on the barren world of 294M-001. And the events that transpire there are only the beginning of what becomes a wild and dangerous ride. After the assignment goes in an unexpected direction, the crew of the Far Sea are pitted against the resources of the xenophobic Ascetics in a race to reach another massive relic beyond known space. To their benefit, Miranda Lankier, an expert xenoarchaeologist, joins them and together Cal, Mir, and the lethal Tyra, a techno-biologically enhanced Cogen, take off on the race to find the relic. Rounding out Cal’s crew, to his distinct advantage, is the technical savant, Soont, a versatile invertebrate Urtkian. Together, the divergent band take on the Ascetics in a mission to save a long dead alien culture that may have been instrumental in the birth of life on innumerable worlds. Join the crew of the Far Sea on a new Finder’s Quest adventure.
This sci-fi story begins with the discovery of an ancient ship from a race thought long gone. The Seeders are a mystery to the inhabitants of the worlds that they have visited, and the few artifacts that they have left behind leave archeologists like Mir ever searching for the reasons for their presence. Only one race has more information than they are willing to share. The Almd-Tg-Cee, a xenophobic race, that have a nefarious purpose in overseeing Mir’s excavation site, which happens to be on a planet in their domain. Using Cal’s special gifts to unlock the ship, they acquire information that gives the location of a Seeder mother ship and attempt to exterminate anyone that has knowledge of the discovery. Cal and his crew, the Co-Gen warrior Tyra, the ingenious Urtkian Soont, the human-like AI Able and their newly adopted member Mir, race the zealot Almd-Rild and his cohorts to find the ship and be the first to secure it. What they find there is beyond anything they could ever have imagined.
A well-crafted and exciting journey, Relic kept me reading on to the end. The interaction between the characters and their personalities and quirks was humourous, endearing and real. The organic nature of the Seeder ships added an interesting element to the story, as much as the nature of the Seeders themselves. The villains are truly detestable, but resourceful, and whether Cal’s abilities will be enough to overcome his rival Garin, who is aiding the Almd-Tg-Cee, leads to a dangerous and unexpected climax. Definitely worth a read! You won’t be disappointed.
A well done sci-fi that leaves a great twist at the end. The characters drew me in and the whole story line was intriguing. I'm looking forward to reading book 2 and continue with the saga! I was lucky enough to be one of Stephen's beta readers.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters were engaging and captured my attention until the end. The ending suggests that this is but a beginning to further adventures. I look forward to the next journey.
