Every 90 Seconds: Our Common Cause Ending Violence Against Women

Rate this book
An urgent examination of how violence against women is inextricably linked to other issues that stoke our greatest passions.

Every 90 seconds a woman is sexually assaulted. In that same minute and a half, another is a victim of domestic violence at the hands of a current or former intimate partner. Every sixteen hours, one of those intimate partners shoots and kills a woman. Nearly two in ten women are stalked, while one in sixteen is raped during her first sexual experience.

Despite these jaw-dropping statistics, collectively we are well practiced at seeing such acts as someone else's problem. And yet, violence against women is tangled up with the most frequently discussed and debated issues of our time: healthcare and education access, immigration, gun policies, economic security, and criminal justice reform--issues that impact us all nearly every day.

In Every 90 Seconds, Anne P. DePrince argues that to end violence against women, we must fundamentally redefine how we engage with it--starting by abandoning the idea that violence is a problem involving only those who abuse or are abused. Instead, DePrince illuminates how violence against women is inextricably linked to other issues that stoke our greatest passions. For instance, each time a woman requires emergency medical attention as a result of violence and abuse, our overburdened healthcare system bears an entirely preventable cost. Meanwhile, the threat of violence is a significant cause of pressure on the U.S. southern border, driving women and their families to seek safety far from home. Violence against women also takes a stunning toll on the U.S. economy by contributing to widespread poverty.

Drawing on these and other complex examples, DePrince builds the case that this very complexity offers an opportunity for mobilizing ordinary people to work to stop violence against women in a way they never have before. DePrince's call to action arises out of the reality that when we address violence against women, we can make progress on a range of other significant issues that we also care about deeply.

The author did a spectacular job with this book- particularly with synthesizing current research, infusing survivor perspectives, and writing in an approachable style. The book allows you to see how violence against women intersects with various systems (e.g., healthcare, education, migration, criminal justice system) and provides guidance on how to find your personal connection to this far-reaching problem. Overall, this book empowers and 'calls in' readers to roll up their sleeves and get to work in ending violence against women.

Every chapter in this book examines a particular system (legal, educational, medical) that is impacted by violence against women. For a heavy topic, it was a fascinating and easy read packed full of facts but told in an easy-to-follow narrative. Educational and inspirational. Everyone who has a mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, girlfriend… everyone… should read this book.

Every 90 Seconds is the researched and cited companion to Hood Feminism with a specific focus on IPV. The writing is approachable and inviting despite the grave nature of sexual assault, harassment and the like. I appreciate how the author draws readers in and seeks to find common ground instead of calling out or alienating folks who may not have previously seen their place in this work. And, the Notes section is rich with further resources!

Every 90 Seconds provides comprehensive insights into why violence against women occurs and continues to occur in such overwhelmingly high rates. The author provides clear references to historical, political (why is funding for services tied in to white collar crime?), economic (what do recessions and pandemics have to do with violence against women?), legal, and societal layers to this problem. This book brings light to and honors the work of countless advocates, community members, survivors, researchers, health providers, and humans who care for others— inspiring readers to find their own ways of joining them in preventing and addressing intimate partner violence.

Dr. DePrince shows us how violence against women is connected to issues such as education, gun policies, and criminal justice reform as a way to find common ground to end violence against women. This is a very important read and may we each find our shared interest and take action.

This book gets to the root of the problem when it comes to violence against women and how we all have a shared interest in solving this, whether or not we feel directly impacted by intimate violence in our own lives. It is an important read for any conscientious member of society. Whether you’re a social worker, teacher, tax payer or cycle breaker, this book will educate you on your shared interest in this issue, and how you can be part of the solution.

As a parent, my favorite quote from the book: “Offering boys and men the freedom to radically accept who they are, instead of trying to live up to rigid notions of masculinity, is a powerful intervention, one that just may save our lives.” I also appreciated its suggestions for how to educate young teens on healthy relationships in home and school systems.

Every 90 seconds a woman is sexually assaulted. This book talked about how trump policies and COVID have affected interpersonal violence (IPV). People are unable to leave abusive relationships due to financial, emotional, psychological, having children/a pet with the abuser, or they may have threatened them or a family member with harm. It is outdated to say “why don’t they just leave” because it is often more dangerous for them to leave and the person being abused is the most knowledgeable about their situation and how to proceed. Laws and policies regarding IPV should include more people who have experienced IPV and service providers who work with people experiencing IPV. I do wish the book had gone into more detail regarding the types of abusers/their motivations/how to recognize each type in a relationship/ and the cycle of abuse.

I’d give it a 5 if not for all the new trendy terms. It was hard to follow at times. Difficult topic but impactful
