I AM A DRUG LORD

Rate this book
This incredible real-life confession of an actual drug lord tells the full, uncensored story of what it takes to survive a life of crime.

As you read this, someone somewhere is buying drugs.

Across the globe, millions of people are involved in the brutal, cold-blooded world of drug dealing, but only a small number make life-changing money. Only a few get to the top, make the calls, know how it all works and truly become drugs lords. And even fewer survive.

I know because I am one of those drug lords.

After thirty years, I've decided to retire and tell the story of how I got to the top of this tainted profession, what's involved in being a serious criminal, the tricks of the trade, the art of the deal and what it really takes to stay alive for so long.

This will be my last confession. And I hope you learn something.

"The real-life confession of an actual drug lord - the full, uncensored story of what it takes to survive a life of crime." That's the tagline that sold me on this book.

I've read a decent amount on the world of narco-crime, with one of the most formative books being ZeroZeroZero, a read that truly exposed the underworkings of something quite complex through an investigative lens. It asks questions about how things work, why things exist, and how power is crucial to both things.

However, this book is a very different take - an anonymous autobiography of the life of someone who seems to have been pulled into this world rather than entered it. There is no interesting hero's arc or journey. No signs of particular insight or knowledge into the inner workings of it all. No truly meaningful adventures or incredible feats.

The only moments of substance and spice being those in regards to his cruelly fated relationships, which felt fantastical and incomplete.

I wouldn't recommend reading this book.

I found it really interesting as he had quite an unusual upbringing, and historical events had quite a big impact on it. It tells you how his drug dealing operations worked practically but seems to be missing something that stops you from getting a clear picture but I'm not sure what, like maybe the psychology behind it, how people work together, how they're prevented from snitching etc, but maybe it's because of a fear of consequences, or maybe he had quite a sheltered life within the industry compared to other people in it. It still tells you enough to get a general idea and to be interesting.
It also doesn't go into the story much on a personal level, like he doesn't talk much about how he felt about things that shaped his life, but contains enough to pull at your own emotions and get a general picture. It's good in a way because it stops it from getting tedious or feeling like a sob story.

Overall I recommend it.

I previously read I Am A Hitman, which I thoroughly enjoyed, so was very much looking forward to reading about the drug world now.

Unfortunately it just wasn’t as intriguing as I was hoping for.

The first third was a little slow as we got more information about his childhood, with lots of history on the area and civil wars which his mother was involved with. Whilst it was fairly interesting, it did drag on and I wanted to hear more about the actual murky world of being a drug dealer.

Details on his life as a drug dealer eventually arrived and the book picked up pace as we learn more about his various meetings with cartels and the dangerous mistakes he made. That being said, I still found it was lacking. I think I was expecting more grittiness to it, similar to the hitman confession, but I have to say this was pretty tame in detail and story. A lot of it focused on his love life with one of the bosses of the drug cartels.

Overall it was an interesting read in places but was weighed down by too much back story and not enough about the actual underworld of a drug lord.

He wasn’t really a Drug Lord though was he? Nor was he anywhere near an ‘Underworld Kingpin’. He was a bit of a weird guy with a complete lack of any self confidence. He fell into crime, got battered about within the ‘underworld’ and then seemingly walked away with little to no consequence. This was a hard one for me to get through.
