Milton Frederick never had the chance to live out his life as a professional gamer on Earth, mainly because he was abducted by aliens. Unfortunately, he wasn’t returned home after the typical probing associated with such things to tell an unbelievable story to his friends. Instead, he was summarily killed and his consciousness was inserted into a Station Core, a giant metal egg-shaped object that could use technology to create traps, Combat Units, and other defenses to protect not just himself but those he cared about.
Despite killing him and sticking his mind in what was essentially a giant computer, the aliens that went by the name “The Collective” weren’t actually a bad group of people. Ultimately, what they had done to Milton had been to save themselves from the incessant attacks of a different group of aliens called Heliothropes; sadly, he never made it to where he was supposed to end up. Rather, his Station Core ended up crash-landing on a foreign planet named Proctus, as far from The Collective as it was possible to get.
However, through many difficult scenarios and by adapting to his new form, Milton was eventually able to leave Proctus with some new friends and new ships he had built with the help of his versatile drones. Now bound for Collective space to fulfill a promise to his personal AI guide, ALANNA, Milton and his crew use their trans-dimensional drive to journey there through a strange dimension that cuts down on their travel time.
What they find waiting for them when they emerge is not what any of them were expecting.
Dimensional Dungeon Cores is a continuation of the Station Cores series, though it can be enjoyed without having read the previous books. This story contains LitRPG and GameLit mechanics, Dungeon Core elements including dungeon construction and defense, and optional stat tables in the form of footnotes. Contains no foul language and no harems or sexual content.
You can read this series as a stand-alone one, but for better understanding, I recommend you first read the Station Cores and the Dungeon Crafting Series because Milton meets Sandra in this book.
I like both these characters very much and it is interesting to see how they, being from two completely different worlds, are working together to save the world.
It would be really nice if somewhere was mentioned that this book contains interactions/spoilers for Crafters Dungeon series and since foreword talks about other semi-related books, it could have been the best place to do that and everything would be good (the element of surprice is not really worth it). Book summary/description on Amazon is also bare. I am not yet finished with Crafters Dungeon and i really liked it (much more than this so far), and suddenly 3/4 into this book there are spoilers for series i supposed was not realted? Really not happy about that. And since I'm not going to finish this, before Crafters that is, I'll leave review as I stopped reading, about 3/4 of the way, exacly at the first mention of name "Sandra".
Is this a kind of crossover book for multiple series Avangers style? If so, list out the prerequisite books, please.
REVIEW ITSELF Having stakes being high is good, the time skipping is also kind of refreshing (jumping over tidious and repetitive parts) and leaving out the whole "humble beginings" of the core is also good in some way. Main character being a semi-idiot is a bit worse, enemies are extraordinary boring and most of the allies feel like thare is a lot of character development missing and they just pop out of nowhere and after a little while I did not even bother trying to remember their names. Another minor thing that iritated me was reffering to every star as "solar system" instead of "star system", i might have not minded except the main character actually had a thought like "Sol is the name fo Earths star", meaning solar. Nevermind that, just a minor thing that just hammered in the back of my head all the time. Same can go for Heliotropes, but that is not that bad.
Two stars feels about right rating this, if i finish it somewhere in the future, might push it up to three if the ending is any good.
Updated my review down to 2 stars after reading 50% book 2.
In most dungeon core books, there's some sort of drama, or interesting event - usually because the "heros" attacking the dungeon have some quirk or humor or something that lets the author play off them and the core. Here? The enemy is completely stupid and the plot armor to set up a tower defense in space is quite strong...
Let me sum up every "attack" for the next two books.
Attack 1: 50 fodder, 5 elites showed up and walked in a straight line into the defenses. Things shot at them and they made it to room 3! Attack 2: 100 fodder, 10 elites and 1 boss showed up and walked in a straight line in the defenses. Things shot at them and luckily they were stopped in the last room!
Plot armor happens! Attack 3: 500 fodder, 50 elites and 5 bosses showed up and walked in a straight line into the defenses. They got to room 2 this time.
I finished this book because I was interested in the characters from their original series, but in reflection, they were already getting pretty OP by the end of those. Now this series tries to make them start over and as such, it really doesn't work and I can't Care enough about the characters to even skip the "fights" to see if I care about plot profession (sadly there also isn't much of that either)
Original review I'm glad the author put the stats at the end of the book, but even then, it's gotta be hard to write a book about tower defense and make the building/design descriptions interesting to read.
The MC is an idiot with attention deficit disorder bumbling his way through the world. He is supposed to be a gamer but has none of the knowledge and instincts for it. Things that should take a couple of sentances take 3 or 4 pages if useless information. The book is not fun to read, it's annoying.
Milton and ALLANA depart Proctus; only to discover that Proctus is not in the Dimension of their origin. Worse yet, when they drop out of the "travel dimension" into their home Dimension they discover that they do not have a record of the Proctans' Dimensional Signature and are thus unable to return there, or access the resources they have accumulated there. From that starting point things really devolve into quite desperate straits for the Station Core and his advisor.
This novel may be of interest to fans of the wider Fantasy genre and to those who enjoy playing RPGs.
Another great great from Jonathan. The storyline welds previous elements together and introduces Milton to a potential love interest! It is best to have read the previous series already, otherwise it probably won't make sense. Not a problem for me, as I devour the books as soon as they are released! The story flows well, with sympathetic characters. I never give spoilers! My only problem is that I have to wait for the next book. Please write it quickly Jonathan! I highly recommend the book.
Mistakes: I know that I found one. It and any others will be listed on Goodreads. The true reason for the lost star is that this series ties in with his crafter series. So you need to read it first before this series or you won’t understand the end of this book.
Plot: The Station Core finally gets his space station. Protecting the collective has just gotten a whole lot harder.
Characters: The tie-in with another of this authors series makes it a bit rough to grade this part for you. What if you don’t want to read the other series?
Neatly ties together the author's half finished dungeon core stories, adding a twist that breathes actual genius unto the Author's work - completely re-imagining the books that I've been reading as a guilty pleasure for years.
With this single book the Author has turned his previously desperate writing from multiple King-esque litrpg series, to must-read, genre redefining material.
I’ve read the previous five books and while I found them entertaining they were a bit verbose when not necessary. The main character continues a series of mistakes already made in the first 5 books while continuing to survive somehow. I don’t want to continue reading to watch the character grow all over again in the same manner.
Jonathan Brooks has done it again and with a crossover to boot... the beginning of the Latest Station Cores series finds Milton and his crew running for their lives... across not only the galaxy but now new dimensions... Hold on, it's gonna be a bumpy ride !!!!!
I am so happy I read the crafting dungeon series before this! The cross over is fantastic!! I do really like the premise of this dual sequel series with Milton fighting a guerrilla warfare against the helio-whatever’s that conquered the galaxy. The mix of magic and technology is my favorite sub genre. Overall really looking forward to the rest of this series
That said, you aren’t going to understand a lot of the references without having read both the Crafter’s dungeon (Sandra’s) series and the Dungeon Station (Milton’s) series.
This was a nice little fun read. I had thought that the author was done with this series. I am glad to see that I was wrong. The station core series are some of the best Dungeon core books out. Would definitely recommend.
Love these series and now they are all coming together like they were hinted at the end of the prior ones. Can’t wait to see what the 2 cores cook up together now.
This is an amazing book that brings two different series together. I'm not ashamed to say the ending gave me literal tears of joy from me. I love this book and can't wait to see if\when the author brings his other series into this one.
Great to see more Milton, love where this is going.
If you're a fan of Jonathan Brooks previous dungeon core book, your gonna love this. I recommend reading Station Core and Crafters Dungeon series first, probably Hapless Fairy too.
Loved It, Really Enjoyed The References/Different Tie In’s
Great continuation/expansion of the Station Core series. This continuation into a Dimensional Dungeon Cores series is really fun and entertaining. Can’t wait to see where the whole gang goes next.
Great story and an interesting joining of protagonists!
This is an excellent follow on series from the Station Core series, as Milton has now made it back to his original dimension.
Even better though is that he eventually meets another core from another series! I am so very happy and excited about their meeting and what that could mean for the future for both of them, their people and their dimensions.
Definitely looking forward to the next book in this series. :)
Not to give anything away, but if you have read some of the authors other books there is a huge squeeeeeee moment about half way through this book. The only sad moment was finishing and realising the next book wasn't out yet!
Very good , the story was very good and I. Looking forward to seeing were the relationship with the dungeon goes . Definitely looking forward to reading more from the author and the series 😀
While I think this book can stand on it's own, you will greatly benefit from reading some of the other series he's written, like Station Core and Dungeon Fairy.
Haven't read all previous books so when said don't need read them for this series was thinking Great I'll give it a look. But then found it very hard to follow especially at beginning as was missing who is who and what is what and just hard to get into so found frustrating.
amusing new series with crazy odds stacked against them.
I’m enjoying the return of Milton and the gang. A crazy series of events. I can’t wait to see where he goes next. I had to pause my reading and dive into the Crafting Dungeon series. Which I also enjoyed.
I was one of the Beta readers for book two. Now I wish I had finished this book first. I really enjoyed it. The bring of Crafter’s and Station Core together. Now I have to listen/read to all those books, I have them, but just have not gotten to them yet.
This book is amazing. Johnathan Brooks had given us the reason to reach for the heavens. Buck Rogers eat your heart out we have Milton! If you wish for an even more immersive experience I suggest reading the Station Core and Dungeon Fairy series as-well by Mr.Brooks. It’s worth the read or listen!
I have read all of Mr. Brooks series and see the crossover points he has set up in at least three of them. I look forward to the Avengers, dungeon core style.
