The penultimate entry in Peter Nealen's Maelstrom Rising series, Power Vacuum, is packed with thrills and twists. Matt Bowen's Grex Luporum team have shifted from purely kinetic military operations to more of the gray zone urban operations that have been common in the here and now. Along the way, they discover that while they decapitated the European Defense Council, the European Defense Corps is still very much a problem, along with a Chinese PMC lurking in the shadows.

Seeing the shift in the type of operations is a welcome change of pace (though fret not: if you prefer straight up military action, there's still plenty of that in this entry). Over the course of eight novels, Nealen has a done a fine job with both world building and character development. Reading the novel, I feel fully immersed in his speculation as to what will cause the next world war and what entities will participate in it.

The epilogue sets the stage for the final entry in the series in spectacular fashion (though minor nitpick, I feel the character building in the epilogue could have been elaborated on a bit) and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Option Zulu.

Writen like an after action report

The battles across Europe have lead to lead Triarii threw death and victory but in the finale push its a 5-way warzones between Chinese, German forces, U.S. Army, EDC remnants, and Triarii for the future polices of of CENTRAL EUROPE.

This novel isn't one dingler battle but servel over many weeks has it shows the fog of war is not easy to tread towards victory. It more a text bookcase of how no foresight in postwar rebuilding and external forces murky up the process with there own intrestes in how they want it done even it means escalating the conflicts.

Nealen is the new Clancy

Pete Nealen is to action thrillers what Tom Clancy was to the techno thriller with better combat scenes. Another great chapter in the series. Keep your copy of Janes handy as Nealen uses the newest weapon systems out there to keep it interesting. Highly recommended.

love this series

This is a good read for patriots. If you are woke, bring a bucket for your nausea. If you understand the real-politik ways of the world, then this is a good distraction from the slow grinding of gears that we see in our struggling republic today.
