When I am not writing, I toss tennis balls to my cadre of dogs. My house is filled with books and dogs, you can smell both when you walk in the front door. It's a good smell.

I have 36 published novels and am currently writing in the mystery genre. My latest mystery, The Dead of Winter, was a finalist for the Claymore Award and is the first in the Piper Blackwell series.

I live in a tiny town in the middle of Illinois that has a Dollar General, a pizza place with exceedingly slow service, a veterinarian (good thing, eh?), and train tracks...lots of train tracks.

This was a great little adventure, I love the world of AL-QADIM and the land of Zakhara. In this, you are Jamil a young pearl diver who finds a bottle while diving that kicks off an amazing journey around the land of fate.

I recently read an Indiana Jones version of one of these and this was a much more engaging story and feel like it was better done. I will probably seek out and see if there are more in this series. If you want a short fun read then I'd highly recommend it.

"In this book you are Jamil"

I don't want to be Jamil. Jamil is a cowardly, selfish, petty idiot. That's the trouble with stories that have "you" thinking this or "you" doing that when the "you" is a defined character severely at odds with the reader's own identity. This is also yet another Endless Quest book where there are massive stretches with no input from the reader, which makes me wonder why Jean Rabe didn't just write the story of Jamil as a regular book, when that is clearly what she wanted to do anyway.

Read this book when I was 12. It was the first time I’d ever read a novel situated in ‘middle eastern’ culture. In this sense, it was influential as I became more receptive to stories taking place in this cultural context.

A three star rating is based on the level of enjoyment I experienced at the time I read the text, and on the impact the novel had on the development of my thinking.
