Braving the Flames

Rate this book
They are the men who fight the fires -- face to face, day to day, life or death. And this is their story. A powerful collection of in-depth interviews with the firefighters of New York City -- a city where eleven fires are reported everyhour. Dramatic, intense, and often terrifying, here is an honest, unflinching look at real-life heroism, told by the men who live it.

Best Book ever if you are a fire buff or you just want some gripping true life events about the City of New York during the 60s and 70s aka "The Bronx is Burning." The book is divided into chapters with each chapter being written by different firefighters, fire officers, commissioners and dispatchers from the FDNY. One of the best stories told is by a Dispatcher who (without spoiling the book) writes about a 911 call he received one night from a very calm elderly woman who wanted to report a fire next door to her building. She calmly stated the address, told the dispatcher to hold on while she went to check something, upon her return she said, "You better bring the mother f*cking cherry picker because the flames are shootin' through the roof!" Classic read!
