Socialism and the Irish Rebellion: Writings from James Connolly

Rate this book
Labor organizer James Connolly combined Irish nationalism with socialist criticism and a willingness for armed insurrection. His influence extended as far as the United States, where he played an active role in the Industrial Workers of the World (the "Wobblies"), to Russia, where they guided Lenin's thoughts on imperialism and colonialism. Connolly was executed by the British Government for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.

James Connolly (Irish: Séamas Ó Conghaile) was an Irish socialist leader. He was born in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, Scotland, to Irish immigrant parents. He left school for working life at the age of 11, but became one of the leading Marxist theorists of his day. Though proud of his Irish background, he also took a role in Scottish and American politics. He was executed by a British firing squad because of his leadership role in the Easter Rising of 1916.

James Connolly was the most important figure in the Irish liberty movement of the early 20th century. "apostles of freedom are ever idolized when dead but crucified while alive"

Fantastic insight into the writing of James Connolly, his influence in the rising and in global socialism of the time. Just such a shame that the Free State and subsequent Irish Republic veered so drastically away from his ideals.

Collection of essays not an actual book. James Connolly was based but his ideas were sorta standard. Obv he was important for his time but there isn’t much value to me in this aside from like Irish specific historical analysis

If only the idea of Ireland described within these pages was realised, every Irish person should read James Connolly.
