Wow. You know a book is worthy of five stars when you need to stay up to finish it as there is no way you could sleep without knowing how it ends.

Juliana is a successful attorney, beautiful house, loving successful husband and what appears to be the perfect life. However one text message from an old college friend, Jenny, makes her question everything.....why? Because Jenny is dead and has been for a long time.

This book is told in two timelines as we move between the present day where Juliana and her college friends try to work out who is responsible for sending these messages and also work out how this person can know so much about their lives.

We are also taken into the past when Juliana and her friends are at college and we are led tantalisingly towards Jenny's death and the role which Juliana and her friends played in it.

The pacing of this book was excellent and DeCarolis moved the story along perfectly, teasing out both the present day and past incidents but not dragging it out like some authors can do.

For me, books like this live or die by their ending and this ending delivers in a big way. Everything leads towards a final showdown which will leave you breathless and desperate to find out what happened back then and what is going to happen now.

Get this book but not before clearing your day as you are not going to want to put it down once you start.

Juliana has achieved a lot in her life so far. She is a respected attorney, has a great husband, and a Manhattan apartment to call home. But everything grinds to a halt when she gets a message from an old college friend, Jenny, that died years ago!! It says, “remember me?” Juliana contacts her other college friends and all of them got the same message from Jenny. The four of them are the only ones who know the truth about Jenny’s death…or so they thought!

This was another enjoyable read by Stephanie DeCarolis. I am a huge fan of her first book, THE GUILTY HUSBAND. Her second book, DEADLY LITTLE LIES is a well written, fun thriller story that I am sure you will enjoy! And be prepared for a great ending!

Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ Digital for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Audiobook Review
This was a solid thriller, but definitely started as a slow burn as I acclimatised to the narrator, characters and writing style, and also the dual timelines.
I love dual timelines but this one took some getting used to, but I'm not really sure why. Sometimes I wouldn't catch which time I was listening to so I missed some content.
There were a lot of characters, as I expected in a book about a high school incident, so the ending was a little less impactful for me.
The narrator started off rather monotonous but warmed to the role well later.
I love a gripping audiobook and with the right narrator (and time!), I can listen to the entire book in just a couple of days but this one didn't really keep my interest through its entirety.

Is there anything more toxic and lethal then cliques comprised of young, impertinent, and restless teenage girls?

This book is about one of those cliques.

It’s also about the unintended consequences that can sometimes arise when you get in over your head, being a part of such a group.

In a way, it’s not that different than being a member of a political cult, and many of you will know exactly to what I am referring.

When you are in one of those special little groups, you have a fine line to walk.

For there usually lurks, in the pit of such a clique, a leader of said group.

And sometimes loyalty to this leader, must come before anything else, even at the expense of the person’s sanity, and mental health. Even if loyalty can end in disaster.

This is Jewel’s story . There are other characters, but make no mistake. Jewel owns this book.

It was a fascinating, toxic cocktail of dripping poison that enveloped me and I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful I find this writer.

It is now my second book from her I’ve read, and I adored the first one as well.

I think she may have just become my favorite author of psychological thrillers.

She writes freely and doesn’t rely on cheap gimmicks the way so many writers of such books do these days.

Reading this book was a joy, even though it’s pretty dark and a lot of really bad things happen.

But make no mistake. If I was going to recommend any psychological thriller, it would be this one. For fans of the topic I wrote about above, you’re not going to find a better one.

Remember me?

A message to four old friends after more than 10 years apart from a dead girl, or at least they thought she was.

Juliana and her friends have a life that wished for now, but their ruled time in college hadn't been forgotten. Jenny's ghost hunts them.

The narration is in the two-time, Now and Then in suspense and mysterious atmosphere. Who and Why sent this message is a secret with other secrets in Juliana and her friends' life that make you want to keep reading this book.

Sounds good right?! Well written, engaging thriller, So why 3 stars?

This wasn't a bad book and I know people will never present or couldn't be judged at age 18, but this was so much jealousy, cruelty a friend, deception, selfishness, imposture, betrayal, foolishness, and immatureness even for that age.

I hope you find it more interesting it, probably deserves more. I just have could not enjoy college and the full of lies life of young ladies.

Many thanks to HarperCollins UK Audio and NetGalley for giving me the chance of listening to Deadly Little Lies by Stephanie DeCarolis, Narrated by Norma Butikofer, I have given my honest review.

This was a decent read but didn’t feel super memorable. The story centers on Jules, who receives a vaguely threatening message from a former college classmate who she believes is dead. Turns out the rest of the girls in her friend group received messages as well and they set out together to their college reunion to figure out what really happened. The story goes back and forth current time and 13 years ago when they were in school.

I didn’t find any of the characters in this book to be super likable, and was regularly frustrated with Jules for not talking to her husband about her problems. The stuff that happens when they were in school felt mostly petty to me, and even the meanest stuff just made them look like shallow college kids versus criminal masterminds. There were some surprises at the end and I did enjoy the unveiling of the villain and the wrapping up of the entire story.

Overall, decent read but didn’t really stand out that much for me. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank NetGalley, HQDigital and the author for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The book was very readable and quite enjoyable, but it didn't quite have the wow factor to make it stand out from other similar books. It had a great start and a fantastic end that fooled me. But in between it just sort of plodded along with some sections, feeling a bit repetitive.

The story is told in two timelines, now and then, which works well in general. but the then element dragged a little, as I felt that the book was probably more relatable/enjoyable read for the female of the species. Don't shoot me now.

Overall, this was an easy read. I didn't really get engrossed in the story and most of the characters were not particularly likeable. But as I said earlier a great start and a fantastic ending so 4 stars.

I read this on my Kindle Oasis and listened to the Audiobook from Audible.
If you like Then & Now books, this certainly is 1 for you. The time span is 10 years.
The Then takes place in college in New York. It shows how the uppity girls make friends mostly out of jealousy and what that involves. 4 girls bound together as college buds.
There is a tragic occurrence that takes place involving the death of a college girl that doesn’t involve this group of 4.

Now is 10 years later when all 4 of these girls start getting messages from Jenny, the dead girl!

Needles to say, this plays havoc with all 4 girls and their present situations.

This book grows on you… at first, I thought, just another ‘mean girl’ book, but I got caught up with the dead girl coming back to haunt these bad girls.

The audiobook was really good, made it very enjoyable to read.

Based on all the high ratings in readers’ reviews, I must have missed something here. I did like the story, but it took a long time to get there. For a good part of the book, there was a lot of ruminating and whining and I found myself doing a LOT of skimming. Yes, I didn’t want to put it down, but that was because I wanted to get over with it quickly…seems there were a lot of the same thoughts and activities over and over

After about half way through, the book moved along a little better and, for me, improved as it approached the ending. I didn’t really like or empathize or sympathize with the female characters.

Juliana Daniels finally has the life she always dreamed of. A loving husband, a career as an attorney, and a cosy apartment in Manhattan to call home. But when she gets am message from an old college friend, he blood runs cold. Remember me? Juliana drops her phone as though she's been scalded. The name Jenny Teller shines out from the screen.... but Jenny can't have sent that message. Because Jenny is dead.

This action packed thriller pulled me in straight away. Four women, five secrets. Each woman has their own secret but they also share a secret. Years ago, Juliana and her friends had covered up a secret, Now, they have all received a text message and the women meet up.

I was hooked. I needed to know who had sent the text messages and why. The pace is fast in this gripping read. The story is told in the then, thirteen years ago, and now format. Juliana, Tori, Nessa and Emily come from different backgrounds and have moved on after the death of their friend Jenny. This well written story held my attention throughout.

It took going deep into this book for me to care at all about these characters.

Why? Because quite frankly they sounded like (and acted like) privileged white women. Juliana, who is the primary character, is also depressing as hell, always worried about her husband finding out the dirty/deadly little lie from her past. When the past comes up to bite her in the rear, instead of just telling him, she pushes him far, far away, which pisses him off. And rightly so. It's one thing to keep a secret in general. But this is the guy you wanted to spend the rest of your life with, and you don't tell him anything at all?

Not the mysterious text that says "Remember me?" from a college classmate who died. Not the sense that someone has been in your apartment. Not the point you realize it's fact that someone's been in the apartment, not the threat written in lipstick on your bathroom mirror. Not that you never gave your school your address, email or physical, and how the invitation to the reunion showed up. Not the fact that three other women you went to school with all have the same mysterious things happening.

Truthfully, I wanted to chuck it after the nth time Jules starting moaning about her cushy little life with a secret instead of doing anything constructive about it.

The narrative flashes between now and then ("then" being their college days and the bitchy little clique they formed). I had much more sympathy and like points for the men and women they stomped on.

The four women all go to the reunion like idiots, blithely following a note that tells them to be somewhere at a certain time, without any of them letting their husbands know. There's suspension of disbelief and then there's this.

The premise was good. I simply did not like the execution.

Two out of five stars.

In Deadly Little Lies, a gripping thriller, the reader follows Juliana Daniels and her former college friends who are forced to reunite because of actions from their pasts. In a tale that moves between past and present, it wasn't long before I was totally hooked. With the author cranking up the tension at periodic moments, and a few strategically placed twists, everything leads towards a final showdown that left me open-mouthed. Entertaining and suspenseful.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from HQ Digital via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

I NEVER start reviews like this but I feel like I need to….. if you liked In My Dreams I Hold A Knife and/or The Girls Are All So Nice Here, then stop reading this review and go buy this book!!!
Are we clear? Okay. So I’m obsessed with first person perspective. I hated the secrets she kept from her husband. It made me squirm. (Funny story- my autocorrect wanted to make squirm be squirt and I can’t stop laughing). There are characters I wanted to throat punch and characters I wanted to snuggle and tell them that everything will be okay. All of that said… I read AND LOVED this author’s first book but this one was so different. I’m nervous and super excited to see what she puts out next!!! Stephanie DeCarolis is my new favorite auto buy author!!!!

Loved this, what a deliciously twisted tale this was. A terrific thriller that had me turning the pages as fast as I could. Makes you reflect on what it is like to be young and how we all wish to fit in with our peers. It is also reminded me how cruel people can be and it reminded me of some parts of my teenage years although of course not to this extreme. I have not read any of this author's books before but I will definitely be reading more in the future. 5 stars and highly recommended. Juliana finally has the life of her dreams. Perfect husband. Great job. Until she receives an email from Jenny. The only problem is, Jenny is already dead. Juliana's there college friends also receive the email. Who's messing with them and what do they want?

Told in altering timelines of today and from her college days, this is the PERFECT stay up all night thriller that'll keep you up these long winter nights. It'll draw you in and keep you guessing until the very end. One of the very best thrillers of the year!

Thank you to HQ and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Deadly Little Lies by Stephanie DeCarolis is like what would happen if the main characters in Pretty Little Liars went to college. I've never said this before in a review, but I would love to see this book as a movie. I think it would be a hit! The story revolves around Jules, an attorney about to make partner, who lives with her loving husband Jason in Manhattan. All of a sudden, she gets a text message, ostensibly from a friend from college who is dead. Could Jenny really have sent her that message? Or could it have been one of the other women in their former clique? What secrets are the four of them keeping from their college years?

Here is an exciting excerpt from the Prologue:

"We stand there, watchers in the trees, like a coven of witches. But we’ve traded in our dark cloaks for skin-tight dresses, flowing blonde curls, and swaths of red lipstick pulled over sparkling white teeth. We are the most dangerous kind of predator—the kind that is designed to look like prey.
...
“No one can ever know,” I say breathlessly, my voice escaping my throat in a jagged whisper.
I look around at the others, all staring straight ahead, the blue lights reflecting in their wide, glassy eyes. No one replies, but I know that they will follow my lead.
They always do."

Overall, Deadly Little Lies is an amazing college-based thriller with a splash of romance. It will appeal to fans of The Divines, The Girls Are All So Nice Here, and other thrillers that explore what happens when a former mean girl returns to her college years. The plot is told in alternating chapters that go back and forth between Jules' college years and the events in the present, where someone is threatening to unearth all of the secrets that were left behind in college. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed reading this book. It was unputdownable, and I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of thrillers, you won't regret checking out this book when it comes out in November!

This book was a wonderful little mystery that kept me guessing until the very end.

Our story focuses on 4 college girls & flits between their lives then, and now as grown women. They are all hiding secrets of their own, as well as one secret that binds them.

It is this secret that threatens to tear their current lives apart.

This was a thoroughly well written book with believable characters. If you have the opportunity, you should definitely add this to your TBR pile

"Remember Me?"
This short, simple email has the power to destroy the lives of four women.
How, might you ask? Because the email was sent from someone who has been dead for ten years. And these four women are responsible for her death.
Why has the past come back to haunt them now? Who is this person and what do that want?
Whoever is behind this is determined to make these women pay for the sins of their past by any means necessary.

Deadly Little Lies is a combination of The Girls Are All So Nice Here and Friend Request. If you like either/both of those books, I recommend giving this one a read.
This book explores the consequences of jealous, rivalry among friends and the need to fit in.
While I did enjoy this story, it wasn't anything I haven't read before and not something that I found super memorable. I enjoyed the two afore mentioned books quite a bit more than this one.
But the characters were-while not always likable-realistic and well-written. Their college pettiness and present day guilt were explored in depth. While their experience isn't something that I personally understand, I did feel empathy for and a connection to them .

I enjoyed this book but it did remind me of something else I have read before: the dual timeline, the eventual university reunion and a secret that four friends want to keep hidden. As a result, whilst I liked this thriller, it wasn’t too unexpected in the plot development.

All of the characters are incredibly shallow and this is emphasised by the flashbacks to university life. Jules is desperate to fit in with the pretty, popular girls and finds herself in a friendship group where beautiful Emily, is the ring-leader. Jules is keen to ensure she remains Emily’s “pet”, even if it means turning on outsiders that also want to share this glory. I disliked how much Jules changes to keep in with this crowd and, despite even Jules describing the friendship group like a snake pit, cannot stop the addiction of the power that comes with being Emily’s “friend”.

Yet, events at university lead to tragedy and, in present day, Jules and three others are being reminded of this when they are contacted by “Jenny”. Despite the fact that it is made clear this character is dead, the women believe she has come back for revenge. I found this quite puzzling and wanted the characters to think more level-headed: ascertain who would want to bring back these memories and why they are getting in contact. True, things become quite tense when Jules suspects her apartment is broken into, but I never got a sense of the women being hunted. I think it’s because none seem to show any remorse or responsibility for their involvement at university.

Undoubtedly, the writer uses stereotypical characters when presenting the university scene. The girls are desperate to be liked – a constant popularity contest – with mean groups, “geeky” outsiders and those who are easily influenced. It isn’t a pretty picture. On the other hand, all the males in this book seem to be sex-driven, egotistical idiots who are driven by lust and not an ounce of respect. Personally, I didn’t like any of the men in this book and actually sympathised with Jules’ husband because of how she treats him. Jason was the only one who seemed to have a shred of respectability about him but this is just trampled on by his self-centred wife.

I liked seeing how the mystery unfolded, even if the plot didn’t feel that original. The ending was very neatly wrapped up and I found the sub-plot involving Jules’s workplace could have been expanded on to add more impact to the novel. As a result, I don’t think the overall effect was particularly suspenseful and I think this is why I found the ending just a bit too convenient.

Reading this book will leave you disappointed in how boys and girls behave when let loose with some freedom. However, it does end on some optimism when it is evident that Jules has learned, finally, from her experiences. As far as thrillers go, it was a pretty good read but not the most original of stories.

With thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this cleverly written twisty psychological thriller that had you guessing right until the very end. Jules has worked hard to put her past behind her. She has a loving husband who she is happily married to, living in Manhattan and has a great career as an attorney. Thinks couldn’t be going better for Jules until she gets a message from an old college friend saying “remember me?”

Jules’ finds from then on her whole life seems to flip upside down. How could she have received a text from Jenny because Jenny is dead, she died many years ago during their years at college and Jules saw her body.

Jules then decided to get in contact with her old college friends Tori, Nessa and Emily and discovers they are all receiving the same messages. That person who is blackmailing them knows all about their lives both past and present and finds many different things to hold against all of these women and keep them at their beckoning call.

Soon all the friends start questioning one another looking to find out who is behind the blackmail. All of them have secrets in their past and they all cannot risk them getting out. I found this book so easy to read it had chapters alternating between now and the college years. Every chapter had me wanting more and left me with questions I wanted answering and the way it was written just made you want to keep reading.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author cor an advance copy of this book in exchange for an open and honest review. This book was a real page turner and I cannot wait to get hold of Stephanie DeCarolis’ other book the guilty husband as if it’s as good as deadly little lies I think I’m in for a treat! 🙂

This was definitely a good book. The action and thriller starts right away. 4 grown women with 5 total secrets. Each has their own, but it is the one that they have in common that is the doozy. This was getting to be a very good thriller until it became predictable. Such a shame, I saw the big twist coming. Still good reading and writing.

If this author writes another book, I would read it but please, leave the predictability out. Still recommended.

Juliana (Jules) is happily married to Jason, & has a great up & coming career as a lawyer, life is good until she receives a message from an old college friend, Jenny Teller. Jules contacts her former friend group that she hasn't seen since she graduated; Tori, her old roommate, Ness, & Emily. They have all received the same message, & they all know that Jenny couldn't have sent the message, because Jenny is dead.

I really enjoyed this one. The chapters alternate between the present & what happened in the past from when Jules first arrived at the college. I found that the main character was fairly easy to relate to, feeling like a fish out of water, & wanting to fit in so doing things you wouldn't normally do. I especially liked the final third of the book when the action moves to the 10th reunion at the college. There were one or two twists & turns, but I did work out who the perpetrator was. If you like fast-paced thrillers, then this is one for you.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, HQ, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This book is written from a very Eurocentric viewpoint, a Eurocentric view of what beauty and perfection is, excluding most of the world.
The feel to this tale was very antiquated, full of sexism and misogyny. Women pitted against each other to get the attention of a man? I don't know any friendship groups like this, and can not relate. The writing style is rather predictable and a little dull. I quickly lost interest in the differing descriptions of hair colour and clothing.
I don't feel that I am this writers target audience, I prefer my stories to be of strong, intelligent, independent Women with the emphasis on what they think rather than what they wear..

If you are a ‘I’ll read a couple of chapters before bed’ person….. don’t read this book!! I was reeled in from the very beginning and had 2 very late nights as I couldn’t put the book down.

It’s a tale of 4 women who had been college friends, each with a personal secret as well as a shared secret from the past that has the potential to ruin their lives. None of them are very likeable characters but with plenty of twists and turns and an unexpected conclusion, it is a very good story. 4.5 *

Reminiscent of “The Girls Are All So Nice Here” (albeit with a much nicer group of protagonists), this book tells a “now” versus “then” tale using alternating timeline chapters, cycling between a group of girl friends attending an Ivy League college in upstate New York (“then”), and their lives ten years later(“now”), marred by memories of their part in a terrible event that has haunted each of them for the decade succeeding their graduation.

Juliana Johnson, (our main protagonist, known as “Jules”) attends college as a scholarship student, struggling desperately to fit in with a tightly-woven clique consisting of the beautiful Tori (Jules’s roommate), her close friend Nessa, and their ringleader, Emily, who is not only spoiled and narcissistic, but is decidedly darker.

The college year followed has the usual dramas centered on party-going, first loves, jealousies and rivalries, but with an ominous twist, as this group of tight-knit late-teen protagonists bends and dips to please and pay homage to their very nasty queen-bee Emily.

As Jules, along with Tori and Nessa, now in their adult timeline, attempt to reconcile their lives around their guilt-soaked pasts, the secrets spawning their shame are slowly revealed. A visit to their campus for a ten-year reunion provides an inescapable segue - allowing the story to build to and release its terrible climax.

The plot unfolds with twists and turns along the way, that keep the reader engaged and entertained. I did not guess the surprise ending, and the author does a good job of tying up the loose ends into a suspenseful and action-filled finale.

I enjoyed this book, finding the teenage Jules, with her profound insecurities and need for constant validation, (fueling her less than admirable behavior), touching and relatable, with the adult version of Jules, still dealing with those same issues, a little less so.

A great big thank you to the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.

Deadly Little Lies was a college based thriller with a splash of romance. This was a cleverly written psychological thriller that made for a tense read-riddled with drama, suspense, college bitchiness and veiled threats. Although the group of friends with a slightly cringy-mean girl scenario with questionable behaviors/moral codes-their complex relationships during their college years, is not my favorite trope to read, Stephanie DeCarolis merged the past with the present timeline to forge a chilling academia mood with that of a domestic drama-it was modernistic.

I think most of us can relate to having tried to fit in at one time or another in our life-particularly in our adolescent/young adulthood years, as was the case for Jules, the main character. She didn’t feel as though she was welcomed at her new university until she met Tori, Nessa, and Emily. They invited her into her their little click; and from that moment on, all the struggles and drama ensued.

I had regard to how the narrative was established into chapters alternating between “then” and “now”. I found the past and present timelines to be engaging and it felt less of a young adult novel and more of a stimulating adult psychological thriller.

Most of the characters were likable. Some not so much. I found Jason to be the most likable and relatable. Jules came in a hearty second. Followed by Tori and Nessa. My least favorite was Emily who was meant to be disliked. She was truly nasty, raising my blood pressure every time she had focus.

What I loved the most was the steady engaging pace and how all the complex matters came to a head as the pace escalated into the conclusion. There were twists and turns, some expected, some not. I had not anticipated the final disclosure, and it was to my surprise that my prediction was wrong. I was shocked by the final reveal.

In all, I was engrossed in Decarolis’s haunting academia/domestic story. Although I found her first book, The Guilty Husband, a 4.5 ⭐️ read, I found Deadly Little Lies followed by a close second, at a solid 4 ⭐️. If you are up for a good old whodunnit, thrilling story then I’d recommend reading both of DeCarolis’s novels.

Summary:
Juliana has the perfect life: a loving husband, a shiniy new home, and a great career as an attorney. But when she gets a message from an old college friend: "Remember Me?" But Juliana knows, it can't be Jenny. Because Jenny is dead. So who is this person who seems to know her every secret - not only from college, but from her adult life, too? Qhy are they set out to destroy Juliana's life? And how is she connected to Jenny's death?

My opinion:
This book has strong Dark Academia vibes, which I loved so, so much! I love a good reunion thriller, and this one has everything I could have wished for - mysterious messages, a mean-girl-like clique and a suspicious death. I was hooked right from the beginning, and I couldn't put the book down until I knew what was going on. I loved to hate all the characters, except for Juliana's husband who was such a great person! I guessed a part of the twist, but the big part really took me by surprise. If you love a chilling dark academia thriller with secrets, lies, and suspicion, I highly recommend you check out this book!

This was my first book by Stephanie DeCarolis, and I will definitely read her first one, too! 😍

Parts of this book reminded me of:
- The Girls Are All So Nice Here by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn
- Mother May I by Joshilyn Jackson

I got a free e-copy of this book from Netgalley, HQ and Stephanie DeCarolis in exchange for an honest review.
