When a second body is found and the two deaths are linked to the Bubonic Plague, O’Malley and Swift find themselves on a hunt for one of the most deadliest killers known to humankind.
An intense read in a great British Crime Thriller series. If you though Corn Dolls was dark wait until you dig into this third instalment in the Annie O’Malley series! In under a year Galloway has served up 3 novels in the Annie O’Malley series and each has had fascinating twists. And each one is well worth the time and effort. Galloway has announced a fourth instalment called The House of Secrets, and the hints at the end of this story leaves the reader desperate for that next volume. This story is a text book British Crime Procedural novel. Over the last few years I have read many crime or thriller novels. I love the DCI Kett novels from Alex Smith and the DCI Will Blake novels from J.E. Mayhew. But this story and series gives us something very different. Alex smith had recommended Mayhew and I ripped through that series, so when he recommended this series I had to give it a try. All three so far have lived up to expectations. I now preorder each new book as it is announced.
Annie O’Malley is a psychotherapist and former police officer. And not only does she have baggage from her stunted police career, but even more from experiences when she was young. Now she has been drawn back, back into a world she had left behind, back to a world she was glad was behind her. Back to her own childhood and her sister who is still missing. And back into a high stakes games. A game that if she loses it is a game where someone else will pay with their life.
Annie is now on the payroll as a consultant. This story starts with her in a plaster from her broken ankle at the end of the previous adventure. She is staying with her boss and he is looking after her. But she is starting to feel cramped, and the combination of fog from her pain killers, and a guy she met who is interested has thrown her off a bit. The description of the book is:
“When a young woman falls ill and dies after a night out, her friends blame a cloaked figure that had been stalking them in the streets. A masked face with hooked beak, immediately recognisable as a Plague Doctor.
Annie O’Malley is back in action with her broken ankle in plaster and a need to stay busy. DI Swift has been looking after her and they’re getting on each others’ nerves.
When a second body is found and the two deaths are linked to the Bubonic Plague, O’Malley and Swift find themselves on a hunt for one of the most deadliest killers known to humankind.”
O’Malley and Swift know that something is off right from the beginning. The mysterious Plague Doctor is disturbing. His description and then sightings unnerve O’Malley even more. And even Swift admits to the team that he is scared. But can O’Malley work through the brain fog and pull the pieces of together. Can she connect the dots before it is too late? Too late for other victims or even for herself.
This story has great characters, an excellent pace. It is a dark thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat. A great read in a fascinating series.
This is the third book in this series and and definitely the worst so far. The characters have not developed any over the first three books, in fact the character of Annie has weakened and in this storyline has no real purpose, except to annoy the hell out of the reader with her whining, stupid questions and total lack of judgement. (Which may or may not have been a clumsy way of highlighting her reliance on painkillers and possible decent into addiction - you will have to care enough to read the next novel to find out). Worse, the killer was so obvious. From the moment they entered the narrative, they might as well have had a huge neon sign above their head saying “it’s me!” This type of detective novel with repeating storyline where the main female character is in increasing peril, then near the end fights for her life (the fight in this one was totally laughable) and finishes with a timely rescue from the male hero is so frustrating. And the comparisons with the Ruth Galloway or Strike novels is sheer hubris, there is no comparison. Suffice to say I won’t be reading any more of these.
Another fascinating hunt for a killer by Swift and O'Malley. These books do grab you and don't let go. While I do get rather irritated with the latter for her extreme sensitivity to heat, cold, embarrassment, aftershave, pain, being taken care of, etc., that quality on the plus side makes her intuitive, empathetic, in tune with things said and unsaid, a great sorter of clue bits and an excellent psychotherapist/police consultant. Swift is so sweet and caring. More careful editing is needed and a little less hyberbole. Her neck was taut, not taught. The author needs to relearn the rules of good, better, best. Something can't be most bestest. And O'Malley's heart really needs to be surgically tethered to where it belongs so that it doesnt keep climbing out of her chest, up her throat and all the other places it tries to escape to when she is especially emotional. As if!
Wow this series so far has been unbelievable so additive, impossible to stop until you reach the end. This is such a masterpiece of skilful writing, such a unique story a huge credit to K.T. Galloway. We start out with a regular girls night out which very quickly turns into an agonising death of a young girl following a mysterious man dressed in black. With Annie still recovering from her last case, she's back with the team to track down their murder suspect before any other victims. Beautifully paced, fabulous characters and an ending you will not see coming. Sadly I understand book 4 will not be available until mid 2023, so any new readers give the series a go, you WON'T be disappointed, 'till next year. BP Sheffield x
This is the third book I have read in the series by K.T.Galloway and they are so brilliant I have just pre-ordered the fourth, (Roll on March 9th) I read a lot of books especially crime books, but I have to admit that this author has a brilliant touch, and totally draws you into the story with Annie O'Malley and DI Joe Swift as they hunt a killer that is really frightening, it grips you all the way through but the last chapter had me gripping my kindle so tightly with my heart up in my throat, I can't wait to read the next one in the series, if you like spine tingling crime books then these are the books for you, - The Corn Dolls, Foxton Girls, and We all fall down.
Wow, Annie is really going through the mill. After breaking her ankle in her last case, and resting at Swifts Place, Annie is called back in on a weird case case. A bird like creature is seen before a young woman dies. What does this mean for the team? They are trying to come to terms with what they learn about her death and need to find this creature. Another exciting book.
I really liked the one before this, and I liked the crimes but I found Annie quite irritating in this one. I don’t feel like there is much depth to Swift, Page or Tink either, you know with some series you get this deep connection with the other characters? Not this one. It just doesn’t feel like it’s there. Also blatantly obvious whodunnit. Blatantly. The why was intriguing! Will I read another? Probably, but it’s a very average series I think.
3.5 stars really - wish they’d let you put that! Another good story and the whole plague element was quite creepy but I knew who the culprit was as soon as they appeared. That isn’t in itself a problem but just like the other books, the ending came very quickly and there are threads left unexplained.
I Really enjoyed this book. It hooked me from the first chapter. I had to know what happened next and who and why they were doing it. I eill need to check out this authors other books. I highly recommend reading this book.
Really enjoyed this book as it was to do with Norwich my home town. Have read the previous 2 books and I can only say they get better and better. Now can’t wait to start the next one.
I really like O’Malley and Swift along with the MCU team. This latest installment was quite scary and the team, one again, wins out. The story is well written and the plot grips you from the very beginning. I look forward to book four. Enjoy!
Really enjoyed this book. Feel it was shorter than the others. Maybe I just was in a better frame of mind for reading and got through it faster! Again good plot, good characters and whodunnit was not obvious.
Another great book from Galloway! A really exciting story which also quite scary….. was a real head scratcher as to who done it. Also really like the characters in this book, and getting to know them better.
Frightening story and possible. Interesting relationship between Annie and Joe Swift, will it go where we are being led? Looking forward to the next one.
Favourite Quote: Just because people have problems that are bigger than our own, it doesn’t make ours any less valid. You don’t have to rate your issues on a scale of one to not as bad as hers because that’s doing yourself a disservice. We are all allowed to feel pain. Her mum still ached for the missing daughter, taken away by their dad when she was just a baby, and in doing so she had forgotten about the daughter she still had left at home. Annie didn’t blame her; she just couldn’t forgive her either.
Favourite Quote: Bring O’Malley with you. It’s about time she stopped sitting around on her arse all day and actually started pulling weight again. It’s a broken ankle not a heart transplant.
A rollercoaster of an amazing series; they were so captivating, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The characters are truly inspiring, confronting their own traumatic pasts while exchanging witty banter to break the tension; it’s incredibly entertaining. The humour adds a touch of levity to the tense narrative, making it a definite highlight alongside the chemistry between Annie and Swift, especially when he carried Annie over his shoulder. They are both adorable. The intriguing mysteries about Annie’s past, as well as the secrets and motivations of the victims and suspects, adds depth to the story. Early retirement, my arse. Strickland should have been fired. Kudos to Swift for breaking the rules and warning the public. What a crazy reason to target the parents by going after their children. I can’t wait to see what else awaits Annie and Swift in the ‘Annie O’Malley’ series. I would recommend these to anyone who is a fan of gripping crime thrillers with complex characters and intricate plots.

Did not disappointed at all and powered through quickly as didn’t want to put it down! Really enjoying this series and can’t wait to read the next one when it’s released
