Shirley Davenport is as much a patriot as her four brothers. She, too, wants to aid her country in the war efforts, but opportunities for women are limited. When her best friend Joan informs her that the Coast Guard has opened a new branch for single women, they both enlist in the SPARs, ready to help protect the home front.

Shirley Davenport lives in a small coastal town in Maine, she has four older brothers and two are serving in the American military. Shirley wants to help the war effort, and she stuck working on a fishing boat with her father Winston. Her best friend Joan Fischer lives next door, she informs Shirley the Coast Guard are recruiting single women, over the age of twenty two and they both apply to join the SPARs.
Eleanor Roosevelt has asked American women to help their country in its time of need, they have lived through hard things, survived and are strong resilient women. Shirley’s not confident she has the right skills, to her surprise she’s accepted and starts six weeks of training. Her mother Helen supports her decision, her father’s very old fashioned, he thinks she should stay home and continue helping him.
At training she meets Captain Leonard Webber, he needs to post recruits at Maine and Shirley‘s the obvious choice. She’s going to be doing secret surveillance work, the German American Bund, is using Lubec as a drop off point for German spies, and their target is the First Lady. Her cover story is, she's been dishonorably discharged from the SPARs, her parents are horrified by her behavior and the people in Lubec no longer want to associate with her.
Saving Mrs. Roosevelt is a story about Shirley putting her country first, despite it ruining her reputation, she proud to be helping America and she follows the Coast Guards motto. Shirley notices some odd things happening on her fishing trips in her dads boat, she has no idea her own life will be in danger, the traitors are the last people she expects and are extremely dangerous.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Barbour Publishing in exchange for an honest review, the first book I have read by Candice Sue Patterson and it won’t be my last. Shirley’s character is wonderful, she’s completely devoted to doing what she thinks is right, her faith never wavers, she believes everyone is equal, her friendship with Alma Evan’s was one of the many highlights in the narrative. I highly recommend Saving Mrs. Roosevelt and five stars from me. https://karrenreadsbooks.blogspot.com/ https://www.facebook.com/KarrenReadsH...
A good light but a bit emotional WWII book. Lots of action and informants. Small time girl into a big time world. Read to find out this entertaining read
This book refused to let me go to sleep last night. After tossing and turning I finally got up, put in my ear pods and listened until I finished the book. It isn't often that a book will keep me up at night. The Author Candice Sue Patterson is new to me and I absolutely loved this book. The cover was beautiful and I knew as soon as I seen it that I wanted to read it. The characters leapt off the page and swept me away into the story. I found the book to be very entertaining, unpredictable with many twists and turns. The World War Two books are fast becoming my favorite genre. I think it's because my Dad served in the Royal Canadian Air force during the second war and my mother worked at an ammunition factory. I can't seem to read enough of this genre. Another thing that attracted me to this book is that I've always had the deepest respect for Eleanor Roosevelt. She was a few years before my time but I believe that she was for the poor and the factory workers. Shirley Davenport's brothers have gone off to serve in the war leaving her at home helping her Father in his lobster fishing business. She would do anything to be able to serve her county like her brothers were able to do but being a woman prevented her from doing that. Then her friend tells Shirley that thanks to President Roosevelt, the Coast Guard had opened a new branch called SPARs for single woman. Against her Fathers wishes Shirley and her friend sign up and both get excepted to go into training. The two get separated and sent to different bases for their training. Shirley becomes infatuated with the handsome Captain Webber. She does well in her training and shortly before graduation she learns she will be sent back home to serve as a spy. A group of German immigrants have set up an underground ring that are planning to kill Eleanor Roosevelt. The Coast Guard wants to assign two SPARs to go undercover and spy on the town and report back to Captain Webber of any unusual activities. Shirley will stay at home with her family and work the fishing boat but secretly send messages to the Coast Guard of anything unusual happening around town. She will tell her parents that she was given a dishonorable discharge from the SPARs because she had an affair with Captain Webber. Will her parents even let her come back home? Will they turn against her for bringing shame to the family? Will Shirley and her SPAR partner be able to find the terrorist before they kill the First Lady? I recommend this book to readers of Historical Fiction and Romance and to Fans of WWII Fiction. This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. I borrowed an Audio book of Saving Mrs Roosevelt from the Hoopla library. A review was not requested. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
Great first line! "Shirley Davenport was a breath away from dying. Of boredom."
Shirley has four brothers and is a tomboy. She's most at home fishing with her dad. Shirley desires to help the war effort by more than sewing and writing letters. When an opportunity to become a part of the Coast Guard surfaces, she pursues that with fervor despite her father's resistance.
Lou lost two brothers in Pearl Harbor and has been stationed stateside as a result. To prevent his mother from any further losses. While he understands and appreciates the decision, he feels guilt about the death of his brothers and singularly focused on helping how he can in defeating Germany and Japan.
Lots of action and bravery in the pages. I especially loved character Alma.
Lovely addition to the Heroines of WWII Series. I look forward to reading more by this new to me author.
My gratitude to publisher Barbour for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel
In Saving Mrs. Roosevelt, Candice Sue Patterson has crafted a homefront story of WWII that will satisfy fans of Lynn Austin and Amy Lynn Green. Filled with intrigue and drama, the hero and heroine must work together to infiltrate a spy ring that is determined to harm Mrs. Roosevelt. Along the way you’ll enjoy the setting and supporting characters. This is an engaging story with a layer of romance that I enjoyed.
As a military veteran, I'm drawn to stories about the early days of women in the military. Although I was familiar with the WASPs and the WAVES, I had never heard of the SPARs. Patterson found in me a willing reader and an eager student. The author went into brief detail about the recruitment and training program spearheaded by Captain Dorthy C. Stratton. It's heartening to know so many women answered the call to serve their country at home. My curiosity has been piqued to learn more about the SPARs and how they were received by a previously all-male service (something not addressed in the book). I'd also like to know if they ever engaged in counter-espionage efforts.
If military history isn't your thing, let me encourage you to read Saving Mrs. Roosevelt for two wonderful—yet different—relationships. The first is a romance which should come as no surprise given the genre. Sylvia and Captain Webber have great chemistry and I liked the pace at which it developed. The second relationship, which almost stole the show, was the friendship Shirley forms with Alma Evans. The message their friendship conveys is simple: love your neighbor as yourself. Together, these three characters make this story memorable.
The Heroines of WWII series gets better with each new release. Bring on the next one!
I received this book through the NetGalley review program. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.
This book caught my attention and it was hard to put down once I started reading it. Shirley, our main character has four brothers and lives in coastal Maine. Her days are spent helping her father on his fishing boat but she is at the age where she is really looking for a purpose in her life. Her brothers are patriots and she is ready to do her part to aid her country. Her long time friend Joan tells her about a new branch the Coast Guard has opened up for single women called the SPARs. Though training is vigorous and she is not sure what to expect she is willing to step up for her country and do her part. Though she finds herself falling for Captain Webber she tries to ignore these feeling because after all he is her instructor and it simply wouldn't be proper. When a plot is discovered against the first lady,Mrs Roosevelt she is trusted with setting up a ruse and going back home under the pretense of an dishonorable discharge. You can really see people's character when they believe the worst about you. Some shun you and some treat you the same. Who can she really trust when her hometown's people now seem different and are they really on to her being a spy? I enjoyed seeing the slow burning romance developing between her and Leo. I also enjoyed Alma's character she really pulled on my heartstrings. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Published December 1st 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
SAVING MRS. ROOSEVELT, part of Barbour Publishing's Heroines of WWII series, deftly weaves romance into suspense as it reveals how Shirley Davenport, a member of the Coast Guard women's reserve corps, helps to save the First Lady from harm. Loved how the rollicking histfic story brings the pivotal era to life.
Thanks to the author, Barbour Publishing, Inc., Barbour Fiction, and NetGalley for the ARC; opinions are mine.
3.5-4* Y'all, I wanted to read this so bad and was so delighted when the digital library got it! 😭 There were some ups and downs, but generally, this book was a fun read! Shirley's POV was such a delight to read, and the espionage was the best part! Incredibly exciting and so fun to journey with Shirley as she spies. Those were just my favorite! The only slight down part for me would be the romance-- it felt too fast and sudden; not that there was no progression and that it was instant love (far from it!), but the general romance area, I think, could've been a little more slow and progressive! Still, though, their romance was pretty cute and sweet! :) I'm glad I got the chance to read from this new author. 😉
First off: Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a signal buoy to relay information.
Second: Barbour Publishing and NetGalley.com provided the copy I read for this review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
Third: My reasons for choosing this book to read have much to do with my father's service in the Coast Guard during World War II and my love for novels set during this era.
Daddy served on the USS Menges DE 320. He was a Carpenter's Mate 3rd Class, which made him a Petty Officer, and he was Shore Patrol for his ship. Among the Menges exploits is the fact that the crew members and the rest of the crews in the Hunter/Killer group of Destroyer Escorts received one of the few ribbons for the American Theater of the war for sinking a U-Boat off the coast of New Foundland. The Menges was torpedoed, taking the back 1/3 of the ship. It was towed to Algiers for temporary repairs, and then towed back to Boston and put into drydock for more permanent repairs. The damaged stern was removed and the stern part of another DE was welded to the stern to make a slightly longer sea-worthy ship.
Saving Mrs. Roosevelt is based loosely in fact. There are some historical characters populating the book and actual events that help to build the plot. The plot itself is moving, intriguing, compelling, engaging, and otherwise interesting. Treason, betrayal, heroism, and grief all play a part in the book.
Shirley Davenport wants to do her part to aid in the war effort. She's twenty-two years old and spends her days working with her father on his fishing/lobster boat. When Captain Leo Webber comes to Lubec, Maine, to recruit women to serve in the newly formed SPARS branch of the Coast Guard, Shirley and her best friend, Joan, go to enlist. She's soon sent to Iowa for Basic Training and spends much of her time studying and learning basic protocols and customs of the Coast Guard.
When threats are made on Eleanor Roosevelt's life, Shirley is chosen to go back home under the guise of a dishonorable discharge to see if she can find the source of the threats. Her parents are hugely disappointed in her and the gossip mill in her small town has ostracized her to the point that it is hard for her to accomplish what she's been asked by her government to do.
This book is part three in the Heroines of World War II series, but each is a stand-alone book. These books do not have to be read in order because the plots do not overlap. The authors chosen for this series are top-notch writers, and Candice Sue Patterson certainly fits this bill quite nicely. I want to read more books by her.
What a wonderful glimpse into the many roles women played in WWII. We don’t often hear of the risks many women were willing take here on American soil during the war and Saving Mrs Roosevelt introduces us to a trailblazing group of women ready and willing to risk everything for their country.
Shirley Davenport wanted to contribute to the war efforts so when the Coast Guard asked for women to join their forces to free up men, she didn’t hesitate to enlist. She never dreamed that this role would require her to risk everything, her life, her reputation, her dignity and respect in order to become a spy in her hometown….all to thwart an assassination attempt on Eleanor Roosevelt. Along the way, she realized that with the support and love of one man, she could have a career and a family…something she didn’t think was possible and with someone she never expected.
This book is captivating, inspirational and at times will keep you on the edge of your seat! A must read for fans of WWII heroines.
Thank you to NetGalley, Barbour Publishing and Candice Sue Patterson for early access to this story and introducing me to the first group of equally brave and inspiring women of the Coast Guard (SPARS).
I read a lot about World War II but I am not sure I have ever heard about the SPARs (the female Coast Guard). And to my delight that they trained at the Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa - now University of Northern Iowa. I spent many weekends there visiting friends and attending speech contests in high school.
This story was about Shirley Davenport and Leo Webber, she a recruit into the SPARs and he a commander. When it comes there is a decoded message mentioning harm to Mrs. Roosevelt and it has come from Shirley's hometown, Leo knew exactly who needed to work the case and be trained as a spy. But it is the way her family and friends reacted to her coming back home, and how things are much closer to home than she anticipated. I also enjoyed the love story of Shirley and Leo.
Even though this was not a final edit on the book, I did really enjoy the story and learned something new on the front involving women while the men were off fighting.
Thank you Netgalley and Barbour Publishing, Inc., for this advanced reader copy. I would recommend to other readers, especially those interested in World War II fiction.
The characters are very well described and draw you in as if you are there. The story builds from the complete lives of the characters to a fast boil as the plot progresses. The well written book becomes hard to put down and is liable to rob some sleep from you as you find yourself having to know what happens next!
Shirley Davenport is frustrated watching those close to her in Maine contribute to the war effort while she is sidelined - stuck helping her father on his lobster fishing boat. When her neighbour, Joan Fischer, announces that the Coast Guard is recruiting, Shirley instantly knows that it’s her calling and makes the decision to join, despite her father’s lack of support. Both girls are accepted for the Women’s Reserve division, SPARS. When Shirley is chosen for a special mission, she has a difficult decision to make; does she put her reputation at risk and agree to undercover work to serve her country, or does she sit back and help from afar?
I loved the character development in this book! Shirley was the star for me because I read about a girl with a dream who risked everything to do what was right and serve her country. She had to learn to stick up for herself and face the rumours, and she capably did so with stoicism and grace. I loved the faith message about struggle and triumph. Alma was another beautiful soul; a black woman in SPARS who faced prejudice.
In addition to the superb character development, the author’s meticulous research and attention to detail have also elevated this story, making it worthy of 4 stars. I felt like I was hull cleaning beside Shirley, breathing the salty air and hearing the seagulls’ call. I felt the disappointment when she and Joan were separated, felt the tension when she agreed to espionage and felt the pain when she returned home and was unfairly judged. Patterson’s sense of place is exceptional and her forbidden romance is sensitively written.
Romance readers, adventure seekers and history enthusiasts will love this story which honours the contribution of female unsung heroines of WW2. It’s part of a series, Heroines of WW2, but with different authors and different settings, it’s certainly enjoyable as a stand-alone . I was gifted this copy by Candice Sue Patterson, Barbour Publishing, Inc., and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
This book was soooo good! Oh my gosh, I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed it so much. Shirley Davenport is determined to help in the War effort and enlists in the Coast Guard which gives single women a chance to serve. And serve she does! Just not as she expected to. As the story continues, Shirley finds she has no idea whom she can trust and depend on. This book will keep you on your toes and you too will wonder who are the good guys and what will happen next. This book, has romance, family relationship issues and lots of intrigue.
I highly recommend this book. Definitely a most worthwhile read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and NetGalley and was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
Full of intrigue and historical detail, Patterson brings to life the little known women's SPARs who deserve to have their story told as part of the Greatest Generation. Drama and faith seamlessly blend together with just the right amount of romance to delight WWII fans.
Simply incredible!! I cannot believe my time with this book has come to an end!
I was on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion with all of the twists and turns in Shirley Davenport's life as a SPAR trainee-turned-spy. Before I even started, I was intrigued by the book synopsis regarding the history of women in the Coast Guard. Since I have family that served in that branch, I knew I was in for something delightful...and I was not disappointed.
Much of the story was fictional, but based on several historical events and people. I definitely appreciated the glimpse this author gave me of how this short-lived division of the Coast Guard came to be. But more than that, I could not get enough of Shirley! A woman who started out as a reserved woman transformed into someone brimming with confidence and ready to serve her country no matter the cost. I could not help but cheer for her the closer I got to the end of the story!
I will not breathe a word of the plot because there was so much more that just what you'll see on the back cover. Trust me though - it will be better than you can imagine!
A new series that I'm very much enjoying. I've learned much from this book. Shirley Davenport is a girl that I really liked. I love her and I appreciated in what she wanted to do even against her parents' disapproval. She knew what she wanted and went after it. Henceforth; my admiration. This story was so good y'all that I finished it one afternoon. The author describes certain places and things that I actually felt like I was a part of the story! If there's one I love it's a good mystery! This book had that and more! This story left me feeling full and satisfied. I'll be sure to look for more of this author's books. Favorite shelf keeper for sure! Highly recommend! 5 stars forna well written book. My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
With a first line like this, the story could not but grab my attention. And it did not let go. From the intriguing plot, filled with mystery, spies (local and German) to secret messages and a slow developing romance, this all added up to a great story which I could not put down.
I adored Shirley and Leo and loved any scenes they were part off. Alma, oh my, she tugged on my heartstrings and made me feel so many emotions. The mystery behind the spies kept me reading, early on I had a few ideas, some of which was right, but I was also caught by surprise.
Shirley swore she heard Alma smile, if such a thing were possible.
This is a new to me author and now on my watch list. Her writing was captivating, yet smooth and she was such a great storyteller, when she revealed what was fiction in her author's note, I was like, really!
There was a few difficult subject matters which I think the author dealt with in an honest but sensitive way. It was not easy to read, but unfortunately part of history and can't always be ignored. Just a small warning to younger or sensitive readers.
This is the third book in a WW2 series focused on heroines who played a big part in history but can be read as a standalone.
*I received a copy from the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own.*
My thoughts: The story opens in a small fishing town on the East coast of the United States close to Canada's border. It is 1942 and the world is embroiled in war. The small town has citizens whose origins are Germany which they left to seek the freedoms available in the US.
The focus is on Shirley Davenport who wishes to serve her country and enlists in a new branch of the military. When she arrives for training with her close friend, Joan, they meet other young ladies.
After their training they are sent to various posts and Shirley is sent back to her hometown where she'll function as a spy trying to root out German infiltrators that pose a danger to the war effort.
As the story progresses, a subplot also emerges that reveals the segregation of blacks and whites and the difficulties blacks had during that period of time. A dark period of history, to be sure.
The story also reveals the efforts of Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to elevate women and minorities giving them rights and respect.
I found the story engaging to read and educational about some of the actions taken to protect the home front here in the United States during WWII.
DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Barbour Publishing to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine alone and are freely given.
This book was amazing! I’ll admit that in the beginning it seemed like it may be more of a “light” read, yet as the story unfolded, it really became more layered. It was a really well balanced read.
Shirley was an endearing heroine. Coming from a small town and longing to see the world, in the beginning she is a bit timid and unsure of herself. She’s someone a lot of people can relate to. I loved reading about her leaving home to train with the SPARs, finding her voice, and learning to stick up for herself. As I read, I tried to put myself in her shoes; leaving all she knew to do a job with next to no support from loved ones, then coming home to vicious rumors while having to keep a secret for the government. It would be unimaginably difficult, yet Shirley handles it with maturity and grace.
The book is filled with historical details that make that era come to life. I loved all the touches of mystery and suspense that really kept me turning pages and guessing up until the end.
Those who love WWII fiction with suspense and romance won’t want to miss Saving Mrs. Roosevelt. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a new author to me and I am enjoying this Heroines of WWII series. I loved the cover that drew me in but was somewhat disappointed that the book was complete fiction as I always love reading actual facts in these type of books. Nonetheless I was impressed with this story and became engaged in Shirley Davenport’s life. I needed to figure out who could be trusted in this story of intrigue and spies. It was interesting to read about the SPARS. Shirley was spunky and I admired her bravery not only as a spy but as someone who stood up for the underdog. She was an admirable character and was written realistically. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to more by this author. An entertaining read. I received a complimentary copy from Barbour Publishing. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
I love reading (and watching) true event historical fiction books. In other words, the best way (for me) to learn about our history is to read about fictional people from a perspective that was well researched and what could have happened. I loved this book and the lessons I learned about the Coast Guard, the women’s roles in WWII and maybe most of all, how our nation (men and women alike) came together for the greater good. Maybe more people need to read this book today in order to remember what it’s like to band together, regardless of color, culture or beliefs and fight for freedom, liberty and independence for everyone. This is a book I’ll be talking about for quite a while.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.
I loved learning about the SPARS, a branch of the US Coast Guard Reserve for single women during WWII (“Semper Paratus—Always Ready”). The plot was complex and suspenseful, and the female characters were interesting, but there were some real issues with the writing. I found it corny, amateurish, and full of clichés. Other reviewers clearly disagree with my rating—I guess I’m not a fan of romance novels. 3 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy of the book. The opinions are my own.
Really fun war time story of spies on the home front! Once again, there were some feminist themes that were a bit too heavy handed for my taste, and one character made some suggestive comments at the beginning (plus part of the plot is Shirley goes home under the pretense of having had a relationship she wasn't supposed to in the military, so tongues wag), but I really enjoyed the main characters, and Alma was wonderful, too!
Saving Mrs. Roosevelt by Candice Sue Patterson gives us the unique perspective of World War 2 and its effects on American soil. In this story, we meet Shirley Davenport; the youngest sibling and only sister to 4 brothers, she is ready to help with the war effort in any way she can, especially since all of her brothers are already doing their part; because as she says "why should men get to have all the fun?" Her best friend Joan, drags her into to town one day to visit a recruitment meeting about SPARS, the all female reserve of the Coast Guard. She is whisked off to training; and while she is there, they learn of a plot to assassinate our First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, whose home lies just off the coast of Shirley's town. Because of this, Shirley is chosen to be a spy in her beloved hometown to sniff out any bad eggs that are working toward enacting such a heinous crime. This is a wonderful blend of history and fiction, with a good dose of learning thrown in (I had no idea about SPARs before this book); and it gives us a fictional retelling of an amazing bunch of heroes that were right here at home. The relationships in this story are written beautifully, you get to see love blossom between Shirley and the handsome Captain Webber; and you also get to witness a friendship bloom between Shirley and her roommate Alma. What I loved most about this story is that the author stated that although it is a work of fiction, it is based on the many brave women who trained and fought along side our men to bring an end to the horrors of World War 2. I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and Barbour Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Quite simply, I love this story. I enjoy a character driven book and this certainly is one. There is mystery, coming of age, mourning, parent child relationships, historical value, friendship, betrayal and the right touch of romance. The bulk of the story takes place in Maine and as a Mainer I love that. ( I tend to look for things that could be wrong when reading fiction based in my state. One possible minute flaw has to do with buoys but I'd have to look up when certain regulations were established so it was easily overlooked by me. Yes, I am a pain.) I liked the depiction of women in the story. I did not know about the SPARS and Captain Dorothy Stratton so I looked up information on her in particular. It was interesting to read about her. There are multi-faceted characters with intense background stories, particularly Shirley, Leo and Alma. Shirley's parents are exactly what I expect from hard working Mainers during the time period. There is so much going on in the plot. It all moves smoothly for a believable, and at times, intense read. I've held interest in WWII since my teen years and this Heroine series is well worth reading. I received my advanced reader's copy of the book from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own unsolicited opinion. It is excellent for reader's interested in history during WWII, women in history, interracial friendship and much more.
Spies, WWII, and the United States of America. Suspense, intrigue, and romance, with a nod to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her amazing contributions to our county. All of this can be found in Saving Mrs. Roosevelt, and it's a great addition to the Heroines of WWII series! In 1942, Shirley Davenport feels stifled in Lubec, Maine, and she jumps at the chance to join in the war effort by enlisting in the SPARs. Little does she know that she will find love and friendship, and she never dreamed that she would become a spy!
Author Candice Sue Patterson has created an exciting adventure for Shirley, Leo, Alma, and Micah, and she also offers these two couples a chance to experience friendship and love. I loved their exciting adventures, and I also marveled at the many emotions that are conveyed during this time of war and sacrifice. Patterson includes many fascinating facts about SPARS, and she has woven them into a fascinating tale that is both fact and fiction!
This is the first book that I've read by this author, but it certainly won't be my last. I highly recommend it to all who enjoy clean romance and historical fiction.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Celebrate Lit. There was no obligation to write a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
Saving Mrs. Roosevelt is an exciting addition to Barbour’s great Heroines of WWII series. The catchy beginning grabbed my attention and the smoothly flowing, intriguing plot kept me engaged to the satisfying end! The characters are well-crafted and memorable. I loved Shirley and Leo as individuals and as a couple with a slowly developing romantic relationship. I also loved the heartwarming friendship between Shirley and Alma. I enjoyed the way real life historical figures are seamlessly woven into the fictional tale. I appreciated the inspiring spiritual truths sprinkled throughout the narrative. Ms. Patterson is a new author to me, and I like her expressive style and superb storytelling skill. I thoroughly enjoyed this captivating, touching story and highly recommend it and the series especially for history buffs! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing via Netgalley with no obligation to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
