An introduction to the Aos Sidhe, the People of the fairy mounds, and to Irish fairy beliefs, this book takes readers on a journey to understand the place that fairies have had in Ireland across the millennia and into today. These beings can be found playing roles both significant and subtle in folk belief and their stories are part of the land itself, making them an intrinsic aspect of Ireland. And yet for those who haven't grown up with these beliefs there can be many misunderstandings and confusion surrounding who they are, and what they can do. /Pagan Portals - Aos Sidhe/ will help people new to the subject, as well as those with a wider knowledge, to understand the range and depth of the folk beliefs. Covering everything from myth and folklore to modern anecdotes and specific types of Irish fairies, this book provides a solid understanding of what can be a difficult subject.
My name is Morgan Daimler. I have had my poetry and prose published in different places including various anthologies, Circle magazine, Witches and Pagans magazine and Pagan Dawn magazine. I am the author of the urban fantasy series Between the Worlds and (through Cosmic Egg Books) the high fantasy novel Into Shadow. I've written more than a dozen non-fiction works through Moon Books including Fairy Witchcraft, Pagan Portals: the Morrigan, Fairies: A Guide to the Celtic Fair Folk, A New Dictionary of Fairies, and Pagan Portals Aos Sidhe
Once again, Morgan has produced what should be impossible – a slim volume that somehow carries more pertinent and relevant information than many much larger books. Morgan’s style is straightforward, easy to read whilst being thoroughly engaging and informative. I am fascinated with the Aos Sidhe yet still learned so much from this book, thanks to the author’s ability to pull together so many disparate sources and create a valuable hub of information, plus clear paths on where to find more if needed.
Favourite quote: “We do not recommend licking newts.” Unlike newt licking, this small but jam-packed volume is very much recommended.
Excellent as always, Morgan explains in a simple way but without neglecting important details what the Aos Sidhe are. Readers who have read them before won't find much new information, but it serves as a perfect introduction to the subject and is well worth having on hand.
This is a slim book but packed with information, so be prepared to read slowly. I loved that the author included a terms and pronunciation guide, and this came in very useful while I was reading. There are also useful resources listed at the end of the book, including books and websites, so I can continue my exploration of the fairy folk.
Written in a conversational tone, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to explore their own Irish heritage or has an interest in folklore and fairy tales.
A very informative and rigorously researched look into the legends and beliefs surrounding the Aos sidhe, the Irish Fair Folk. Morgan Daimler delves into scholarly research and folk beliefs, and it's fascinating. My only complaint is its brevity--at under 100 pages in length, it doesn't give me as a reader much time to "sit with" the subject. It's more of an outline than a discussion. The most useful part, to me, was the extensive bibliography. The author is thorough and knowledgeable, and I plan on picking up more of their work on Irish legend.
Pagan Portals - Aoa Sidhe: Meeting the Irish Fair Folk by Morgan Daimler A good intro to the Irish fair folk. The author deals with the fair folk in mythology and misconceptions. There is a chapter on changelings and the different types of fair folk. Chapter 6, safe dealings is a must read when it comes to interacting with the fair folk. I really enjoyed the book.
