2023:
I had the opportunity to listen to this on Spotify. It was just as good as I remembered and I still love all the same things about it--Dani's friends, her new relationship with her brother, the southern setting and of course Dani and Alex finding their way back to each other.
Updated 2021 review:
When the opportunity came to listen to the audiobook I jumped at the chance. I love that the author used two narrators since the book is told from Dani and Alex's points of view. If you've never talked to someone from the deep south you may think the narrator for Dani (who is from South Carolina) is overdoing the accent but she isn't. She sounds a lot like a friend who was born and raised in Alabama.
This story was just as good the second time and I think the narrators helped me really feel how the characters felt as Dani realized how she'd treated Isaac's career choice and how she'd made Alex feel when she didn't listen to his warnings about Sasha.
2020 review:
It's been far too long since I've read book by Jenny Proctor, so I was super excited when I got the chance to read this new one. I was not disappointed. I loved this story--the storyline, the characters, the settings, everything.
Dani loves fashion, always has, and her dream job to work/design for LeFranc, came true a couple of years ago. The problem is she's still just the personal assistant to Sasha who keeps telling her she's going to recommend Dani for one of the design teams. Of course Sasha does no such thing, she just keeps using Dani's awesome design skills and passes them off as her own ideas.
While on a coffee run for her boss from he££ she hears the soft southern drawl of a voice from the past, the voice of the man she dated for a year, the voice of the man she'd fallen in love with, the voice of the man who'd suddenly broke things off and left without an explanation a year ago, the voice of the man who hadn't contacted her in a year (no calls, texts, or emails), it was Alex's voice.
This isn't just a story about Dani and Alex and her (and us) finding out why he left and didn't contact her. It's also a story about Dani realizing how awesome her twin brother Isaac is, and developing a relationship with him. Dani was so wrapped up in achieving her dream she didn't know who her brother really was--her relationship with him had become kind of superficial since they'd graduated from high school.
I loved Dani's friends--especially Chase, he was one of my favorite secondary characters. I loved the whole wedding dress mission--it was fun and I was hoping it would have turned out differently, but at least the bad guys got theirs in the end and the good guys get a happily ever after. That's what counts to me. Sasha was a piece of work and I knew when she made a surprise appearance at Dani's apartment no good was going to come of it. What I didn't expect was the truth about Sasha. That was a complete surprise.
I loved Alex, he was such a great guy, but there were a couple of times I wanted to smack him and Dani and say "Talk it out and get your act together!" They were great as a couple, but drove everyone around them crazy while they were deciding if they were going to get back together. One of my favorite parts of the book was Dani and Alex's surprise for Isaac during his Compassion Experiment. It showed how much their sibling relationship had grown.
I received a complimentary copy from Four Petal Press, but bought my own personal copy. All opinions expressed in my review are my own.
