I loved this short colourful story of three hapless foxes on a hunt for rabbits. The illustrations are in the same delightfully quirky style as the author’s previous book, the Cave. This time I did expect a twist, but was still surprised and entertained by this cautionary tale of misleading appearances. Kids will, no doubt, love commenting on the foxes’ arduous and fruitless journey as well as spotting the ever-present hunter’s eyes and the shenanigans of the cute pink worm.
Strongly recommended.

I was highly anticipating reading The Woods after thoroughly enjoying The Cave by Rob Hodgson earlier this year. The Woods has some of the same charm that I enjoyed in The Cave, but the ending falls a bit flat. I felt a bit like an outsider reading someone else's inside joke or something.

Nonetheless, this is still an enjoyable read, and I'm sure many children will enjoy following the foxes on their hunt for rabbits. I liked spotting the little worm doing cute things on each page.

I give this one 4 stars.

Fox-hunting is a tradition in my local rural communities in Leicestershire; banned for the time being but what do foxes hunt?
The Woods by Rob Hodgson is just abook to tell me. What is more it has magically, funny and clever illustrations backing up their inept hunting skills.
Three foxes; one looks similar, (well it is a fox afterall) to the logo for Charnwood Brewery. Not sure I should by drinking alcohol even in my mind while reading to children. Where was I? Three foxes, tiny, tall and round are set to track down and eat lovely rabbits somewhere in the woods.
Apparently led by the stereotypical short despot, Tiny keeps them focused but sadly they have more chance of catching a cold.
Unfortunately, they have not been quiet or secretive in their quest. The foxes have been under surveillance themselves. Has the hunter become the hunted?
This is a seriously crazy tale of three incompetent woodsmen, three foxes no rabbits. Yet you and your child will see them hiding in plain site on every pages. Comic twists to every page too with a jolly worm wriggling into picture for toddlers to laugh with youas the book comes alive.
Nothing taxing here but a gentle adventure into the woods where foxes can't see the rabbits for trees.

I really enjoyed reading this one . I read it with my toddler and we both had a laugh reading it.
I liked the fact the foxes and the rabbits were all different sizes and shapes.
The illustration is lovely too.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Arc of this book, All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Woods is a story about three foxes (Tiny Fox, Tall Fox and Round Fox) on the hunt for rabbits in the woods. We follow them as they go through crazy things in the forest looking for rabbits (and always missing them).

This story was nice and had a neat twist at the end. While there is nothing wrong with the story or illustrations, I wouldn't rush out to buy or loan this from a library. The illustrations are definitely done in a different style, which were less appealing to me than to my kid (which is obviously okay since it's a book meant for a child).

Overall, cute story, but nothing spectacular.

What a cute simple, little book! “The Woods” is a sweet and lovely tale about silly foxes. It is written by the author, Rob Hodgson and follows on from ‘The Cave’.

Three foxes are on the hunt for rabbits in the woods. They search through carrot fields and pumpkin patches, but the rabbits keep outsmarting them. Will they ever find any rabbits? Are they themselves, being hunted?

Visually, the book was extremely engaging. The foxes were brilliantly illustrated I loved that the three foxes were all individual and unique to one another. Rob used this to great effect throughout the story and it added great impact to the ending. As they hunted, the foxes argued amongst themselves, which made for a few laugh-out-loud moments. The sly rabbits dotted throughout and the illustrations not only added interest to the book but also helped with thought and reasoning abilities.

I adored the twist at the end, not often seen in a children’s book, which was achieved through clever use of the illustrations. The book was packed with humour and how fabulous was the reference to doughnuts!

I found this book funny and entertaining and I really appreciated this lovely, winsome tale. I would definitely recommend it and I think the book would make a lovely addition to any family library.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the complimentary ARC. This is my honest and totally voluntary opinion.

I can see how this book will have an audience... but it's not me.

The illustrations are just okay. Actually, they're kind of weird. The stylized foxes are sort of funny, but they also don't look much like foxes, aside from their colouring. Also, what is up with the pink worm? When it's drawn wearing hats, it just looks phallic.

The main problem I have with this book is the story. The foxes go in search of rabbits to eat, following signs that someone has laid out for them. Eventually, we find out that it was the rabbits luring the foxes into a trap, and the book ends with all the foxes in the rabbits' giant net. Okay... but what happens next? Rabbits aren't carnivores (unless this is a really scary children's book), so what are they going to do with their bag of foxes? Why did they trap them in the first place? (Self-defense, maybe... but are they just planning on leaving them in the net forever?) It's kind of a weak ending.

Maybe this author/illustrator has fans that love the style and the quirky nature of the stories, but I don't think I'm going to be one of them. While I don't think this is a terrible book, I'm not in any hurry to read it again or seek out any of the author's other work.

British author/illustrator Rob Hodgson, who made his debut with The Cave returns to the form with this tale of three foxes on the hunt for rabbits. Following the conveniently (one might almost say suspiciously) places signs, they trek through the forest, but despite their thorough search, they have no luck. Unbeknownst to them, there are three rabbits who are also on the hunt... for them!

Although I did find The Woods rather entertaining, and appreciated the little visual clues throughout that indicate more is going on in the sylvan world than the foxes at first realize, I also found myself thinking that Hodgson seemed to be rehashing, or perhaps elaborating upon the story in his earlier book, The Cave . Perhaps because I read that one first, and knew what to expect, this one felt a little anticlimactic to me. I enjoy fox stories (foxes in children's literature is a research interest of mine), and I think young people will appreciate the role reversal here, but in the end I wasn't terribly impressed. Tastes vary of course, so readers who enjoy Jon Klassen-style tales might want to give this one a look.

24/52 books read in 2019.
Provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Although I really like the interplay this kind of picture book stimulates, the kids can outsmart the foxes by finding the rabbits that reportedly aren't there, I am disappointed by the ending.
I am sure that some kids will find it absolutely hilarious that the hunters become the hunted, but for me it is just a tad meh and uninspired. I also really do not like the use of the word st*pid. Totally unnecessary and, especially because this is a children's book, quite in poor taste.
Please google ableist slurs if you aren't sure what I am talking about.

So for me this one is a pass, but I have heard great things about The Cave so I will probably give that one a shot in the future.

This is a silly book. And like all silly books, if you stop to ask what the heck is goin on, then you won't like it.

The three foxes are looking for rabbits. And like The Cave, which is also by the same author, there is a twist at the end.

The illustrations are fun to look at, and children will probably love reading about the funny looking foxes.

The woods

But the ending is odd, and kind of doesn't make sense.

But as I said, you can't stop and think about silly books deeper meaning, or you won't end up liking it.

I like the style, the humor, the absurdity behind it all! The Cave, by the same author, is probably a bit funnier and better, but we do recognize the style. Reading some page I just laugh a little, but was mostly imagine the young me laughing way more at some scenes. I think kids may like it! I did!

When you pick up a children’s book you generally expect cute pictures with good messages that are interesting for the age group while sometimes throwing in some humour. This wasn’t that. The illustrations are simple and silly (worm watching tv underground) but not overly appealing, kind of scribbly and awkward.

Though there was a hint of humour in the backstory, the story itself was a bit dark for the age group. (We must capture and devour every last delicious rabbit…) Yes, foxes eat rabbits. It’s still a children’s book. There was also name calling and one rabbit had a very bad attitude. The appropriateness is questionable… I won’t be going out to buy this for my 3 year old.

This was a cute and silly story with adorable illustrations about three hungry foxes in search of some rabbits to eat. On each page there is a worm that’s fun to find in the action. I feel as if the ending could have been a bit better, but I overall I still enjoyed it. I think my preschoolers would find this story entertaining as well.

The Woods, the newest release from Rob Hodgson, follows the story of three foxes as they go on a quest to track down some rabbits. In a quirky twist, the clever rabbits in this scenario are leading the foxes into a trap so they can, in fact, capture the foxes. It's amusing...kind of.

I'm a little underwhelmed by this book. Perhaps it will appeal more to children (which I guess is kind of the point) but I just found it a little bizarre. The story seems funny initially, but when you get to the end of the story it all seems a little senseless.

The illustrations are colourful and certainly have the same quirky factor as the story. I especially liked the way the rabbits were hidden throughout and imagine children will have fun trying to spot them. The purpose of the pink worm confused me but I did enjoy all the little underground scenes, such as the bear tucked up in his hibernation spot and the worm enjoying a night in front of the TV.

While this may appeal to some, it is not a book I would be purchasing for our 'Little Library'.

What do three foxes do when they are on the hunt for rabbits? They search all through the woods, of course. Over the tallest trees, under the carrot fields, and through the pumpkin patch... but no rabbits. Will Tall Fox, Round Fox, and Tiny Fox give up? Never!! But when they finally come across a group of rabbits, what happens will blow your mind!! Don't miss this hilarious new 2019 book!!

This is such a cute book! The illustrations are precious and these foxes will make you laugh out loud. This will make a fantastic read aloud.

I read this book to my boys before bed tonight. We all laughed at how silly the foxes looked (Round, Tall, & Tiny), and couldn’t believe they kept missing all the rabbits. We loved trying to find the worm on each page and giggled on what new accessory he was wearing. (The favorite was the witch’s hat in the pumpkin patch.) And we cheered when the rabbits caught the foxes at the end.

My boys, a 6- & 4-year-old, thoroughly enjoyed the story. I, however, an avid children’s book reader and former Kindergarten teacher, enjoyed most of the story, but was less excited by the final pages. It felt rushed and not planned out, leaving the audience wondering HOW and WHY the rabbits caught the foxes and WHAT they were going to do with them now? Also, the word ‘stupid’ is taboo in most classrooms these days, so I would worry about how many teachers would want to pick it up for their classrooms.

Overall, though, I enjoyed the premise of the story and how it was executed throughout most of the book.

This is an interesting story. You have three foxes, who just want to catch some dinner. Foxes eat rabbits. Then you have smart rabbits who outwit the foxes. Seems simple enough, but there were some things about this story that just didn't do it for me. The foxes tried to eat other things like doughnuts and acorns, but the smallest fox told them that foxes eat rabbits. No matter what they tried, they could not find any rabbits to eat. The main issue I had with this book is the name calling. I do not condone name calling for any reason and found this to be something I did not want to read to my grandchildren. What I can say I liked about the story was the illustrations. They were cute, colourful and inviting. I also liked the ingenuity of the rabbits. As a retired teacher who dealt with bullying and name calling regularly, I can not recommend this one.

I love stories set in the forest and featuring woodland animals so I wanted to read this. It follows three very different foxes as they follow the usefully-placed signs in search of rabbits for their dinner. And yet, is there something else hunting them...?
Young children will enjoy spotting the rabbits hiding in each picture and the ending should get a few giggles.

Rob Hodgson is quickly becoming a new favorite picture book creator for this reviewer. His illustrations are amazing, and he has a tongue in cheek humor that adults see coming a mile away, but the journey is so much fun. This time there are three foxes on the hunt for rabbits. But those sneaky little rabbits are hard to find. This is really fun book to add to any children’s collection.

Cute story with a different style in illustrations from the norm, but I found it appealing and I know kids will love it, abut 3 foxes on the hunt for rabbits and there is a lovely twist. A simple effective story, will definitely appeal to children, it did to me and I’m an overgrown child who loves foxes.

The Woods by Rob Hodgson. PICTURE BOOK. Frances Lincoln (Quarto), 2019. 9781786032744

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Three foxes are on the hunt through the woods for tasty rabbits. They search high and low, bickering, not even thinking about who put up the signs they are following. Too bad for those foxes!

The foxes are great caricatures and their ultimate fate is justly deserved (for anyone who prefers cuddly rabbits over wily foxes). I’d love to pair this with Road Runner cartoons!

I liked the illustrations, especially the little pink worm on each page. But after reading the book three times, I don’t really get it.
In the end the rabbits refer to the foxes as being stupid. I guess they kind of are because the reader has no problem finding the rabbits on every page as the foxes hunt the rabbits for food.
Children will like outwitting the foxes by seeing the rabbits when they cannot.

"Here are the woods. The woods are home to three foxes. Three foxes are on a hunt... for rabbits."

Thus begins a tale of search and destroy. But will they succeed? Tiny Fox, Tall Fox, and Round Fox are on a mission to round up a buffet of mouth-watering rabbits to eat.

Their search takes them over the tallest trees... nope, no rabbits there, under the carrot fields... nah, no rabbits there, and then through the pumpkin patch... no... no rabbits there, just to name a few.

After an exhausting day they wonder if they will ever catch a rabbit, might be easier to catch doughnuts or acorns they speculate. The next day, three determined foxes, resume their seemingly impossible task. Then finally the unexpected happens. A surprise awaits them that they never in a million years expected to find!

The illustrations are colourful, quirky and quite unique. Kids will love outfoxing the foxes by discovering rabbits on each page which of course are unknown to the not-so-sly canines who are deep into stalking mode. Kids can also find a little pink worm on the pages. He moves always onward as the story progresses. The delightful little worm also appears on the author's website which is a fun connection to discover.

This humorous tale will be a hit with its interactive components and the animated and expressive characters. It is a shoo-in to entertain those (young and old) who give it a read. I like it a lot and would recommend it.

Three foxes of various builds (tall, round and short with almost beak-like mouths) are out to find yummy, tasty, rabbits. Though they are having trouble locating any, conveniently there are signs posted throughout the woods directing the way to rabbits. Children will love to point out that there are indications in the illustrations of rabbits watching the foxes. You see, the foxes have been under surveillance in their quest for rabbits.

They follow the signs over tall trees, under the carrot fields, and through the pumpkin patch, but they find no rabbits.

So do the rabbits have a plan of their own, or will the foxes find their way to a tasty meal?

My Thoughts
What Concerned Me: One, I wasn’t a real fan of the illustrations. But more importantly, the last of the book just didn’t work for me. The humor didn’t feel child-like and the use of the word stupid in the last sentence certainly didn’t feel right.

What I Liked Most: I did think the cover was appealing. And due to the rabbits hiding in the illustrations, I believe the first part of the book will certainly appeal to children.

All in all, there still are very cute things about the story.

Thank you NetGalley and Lincoln Books for the advanced copy.

This was a fun story about 3 very different foxes on the hunt for dinner...rabbits. As they hunt through the woods, it becomes clear to the reader that they are being watched by something from the shadows. Will they catch rabbits before something else catches them?

As with The Cave, I enjoyed this book and there were many opportunities to teach prediction to a class of young readers. The simple pictures encourage children to look carefully and take notice of what they can see by hunting for the little worm who features on each page.
This book would be great for teaching about adjectives, with simple accurate descriptions of setting and character, which are then portrayed in the illustrations.

I will definitely consider using this book with a class of young readers as I’m sure they’ll love the story. There is also some interesting vocabulary that could be introduced to them in the context of the story.

Many thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me access to an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Following on from The Cave, the first picture book for very young readers by this author, comes this second, similar title. It's not quite as good, but by now what appears to be the creator's shtick is laid out – silly and amusing tales where nature has a way of getting its own back, with large spreads peppered with tiny detail to look out for. No, the worm in every large image is not as amusing as the poor snail last time round, and the twist isn't as great here, but this tale of determined foxes hunting white rabbits across their domain is still certain to entertain.

I liked this book. Bold illustrations, simple text and easily recognisable characters will appeal to younger readers, as will the ignorance of the foxes as they are searching for the rabbits. I can easily imagine the squeals of delight from young children as they spot the rabbits on each page that the foxes say ‘no rabbits here’. I also think that children will enjoy the twist in the tale as the books ends.

Clever humor in the writing and illustrations. Three foxes are hunting for rabbits. They search everywhere but can't find them. Readers will enjoy finding the rabbits on each page. Eventually, they discover the rabbits have been luring them to capture them.
The expressions on character faces bring the story to life.
Simple wording allows younger readers to read this on their own and also enjoy it as a read aloud.
