Lynley Cannon is dreading the Holidays. The sixty-something cat shelter volunteer would rather hang out with cats that brave her daughter's soulless Christmas gala, so when a witch's beloved kitty is catnapped, Lynley grabs the excuse to skip out on her social obligations. Though Lynley knows little about the white witchcraft, Wicca, she does know cats and can't decline a plea for help when one goes missing. Then the witch disappears as well. Lynley, compelled by her cat-like curiosity, sets out to search for the pair, but the task is daunting. A freak snow storm and a crazed captor take things in a dangerous direction. As Lynley endures the cold dark of confinement, the Christmas spirit brings a strength she never knew she possessed.

Cat Writer Mollie Hunt is the award-winning author of two cozy series: the Crazy Cat Lady Mysteries featuring a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip, and the Tenth Life Paranormal Mysteries involving a ghost cat. Her Cat Seasons Sci-Fantasy Tetralogy presents extraordinary cats saving the world. She recently released a COVID memoir which she calls, "a tale of a plague and politics, of depression and inspiration, and an ode to the very real and healing presence of cats." In her spare time, she pens a bit of cat poetry.

Her cat writing has earned various honors, including CWA Muse Medallions and World’s Best Litter-ary Awards. She is the recipient of the prestigious Michael Brim Distinguished Service Award (CWA) and the Catalyst Council Connect to Care Award, celebrating a true story of the profound connection between a shelter cat and its adoptive pet parent. Her book, Cat’s Paw, was a CIBA Mystery & Mayhem Semi-finalist.

Mollie is a member of Sisters in Crime and Willamette Writers, as well as being on the board of the Oregon Writers Colony and Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA). She is also the librarian for the Cat Writers’ Association. Mollie lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and a varying number of cats. Like her cat lady character, she is a grateful shelter volunteer.

A sweet little read that has Christmas and mystery all wrapped up

A great little read. A plot of catnapping that turns into a kidnapping and extortion, all based just a couple of days before Christmas and featuring our favourite cat lady.
It all started with the news of the disappearance of a cat. Then it blossomed into protests against witches and the disappearance of the cat owner. What has happened to the young woman? A phone call, a drop off that ends in tears and a fight to get free. Will the cat and the young woman get off unscathed? Will Christmas really be Christmas?

The introduction to this book is entirely correct; this is not a happy Christmas story by any means. Good thing I read this after Christmas. Not nearly as exciting as the other books in this series though still quite intense at times. Lynley can’t solve one mystery without getting herself hurt in some way. I’m annoyed that the Wiccan aspect of the story was not wrapped up.

I had to read this compelling story in almost one sitting. Had to find out what happens! Mollie Hunt has again created a cozy mystery starring Crazy Cat Lady Lynley Cannon and her clowder of eight cats at home. The mystery contains some uncozy moments of suspense and intrigue. This novella is positioned between two of the author's full-length novels, Cosmic Cat (#6) and Cat by the Sea (coming in 2020.)

This novella is timely for the season as the story takes place during the Christmas season and right before the Winter Solstice. The solstice is an important event in this tale, as is the Starry Night Fete, a fund raising event for the Friends of Felines shelter organized by intrepid curiosity-chaser Lynley Cannon, the human heroine of the Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mystery series.

Lynley might have to miss out on her planned fund raising event when she becomes involved with a Wiccan leader whose cat familiar has been lost, or very likely kidnapped (catnabbed?). Lynley finds it difficult to resist a sweet feline in trouble, and when the Wiccan leader also disappears, Lynley plunges onward. If the cat and Wiccan leader are not discovered in time to lead the Solstice event, "great evil" threatens the coven--and perhaps beyond.
