She’s sworn off love.
But fate has other plans.
In a kingdom full of lies, her heart will be torn in two.

The Dark Witch killed one of Ellie Parrish's sisters. Now Ellie is determined to save her youngest sister as well. This time from their own vile parents.

Through adoption, Ellie can free her from them. But it may require her to enter into that one contract that has screamed of lies and misery her entire life.

Marriage.

An offer from her closest friend, Micah, is tempting . . . in so many ways. But his love is only a reminder of what she’s incapable of giving—her heart.

However, a chance meeting with the Prince of Terra, and an unimaginable invitation, may give her another option. A chance to convince him to change the law so an unwed woman can adopt. She’ll simply need to keep herself from falling for him while doing so.

In a kingdom full of lies, everyone has someone to protect, everyone has something to hide, and with whispers of the Dark Witch’s return, no one knows what evil is coming.

Kingdom of Lies is the first book in The Broken Kingdom YA Fantasy Series that features broken characters, surprising plot twists, closed-door romance, and as always, a happily ever after.

If you liked The Selection Series but wished it had a bit of fantasy, then you’ll love Megan Lynn Rose’s page-turning series.

Oh my goodness, hard DNF. The writing is just terrible. I’m always sad to give a bad review to indie authors because I always want to be able to support independent works, but there has to be a standard to writing and this fell wayyy below the mark. It’s great that Kindle makes it possible for authors to self publish, but unfortunately, self publishing isn’t for everyone and this book is one of those fails.

Maybe it would have been a good story overall but the horrible writing got in the way. I just couldn’t even continue after the third chapter because it literally hurt to keep reading. Just goes to show that to write a good book, it needs to be well written AND be a compelling story.

Kingdom of Lies is a fantasy novel with a love triangle. The main character, Ellie, is struggling to cope with the death of her sister and desperately trying to save her other sister from their abusive parents. She struggles to love and feel worthy to be loved in return.
In an effort to save her little sister, Ellie strikes a deal with the prince. He’ll do his best to change the laws that prevent Ellie from adopting her sister if she will come to the palace for a month and allow the prince to court her. Ellie soon finds herself in the middle of a kingdom in turmoil trying to protect themselves from the Dark Witch while Ellie tries to sort through the complex feelings she has for the prince and her childhood best friend.

This story has a lot going on, I felt like there were a lot of unnecessary side stories and I would’ve liked to read more about the Dark Witch and the Magi and how Ellie fits in to that storyline. Maybe that’s coming in the next book, but I probably would’ve been less confused if there had been more explanations about the magical side of things.

The main storyline followed the love triangle between Ellie, Prince Aden, and Ellie’s childhood sweetheart Micah. I really enjoy love triangles, but I felt like we didn’t see enough of Aden and Ellie together. I am not sure why Ellie loves Aden when she hardly ever sees him. I would’ve liked to see more of Aden & Ellie courting. But I did enjoy seeing Ellie and Micah together.

Overall I think the story is intriguing and has a lot of potential, but there are 3 things that I struggled with: the sexual content, the language, and how hard it was for me to connect with the characters.

Although there is no explicit sexual content on the page, I would still call this open door. We see two of the characters kissing passionately and undressing each other, it fades to black, and then we see them the next morning in bed together. They feel bad about it afterward, but the incident becomes a point of conflict later when one of the characters want to pursue a relationship with someone else. I just felt like it was talked about a lot more than I would’ve liked. It kind of felt like an unnecessary part of the story, and was detailed enough that I would hesitate to call this story clean.

With the language, although it only happened a handful of times, the characters swore often enough to make me uncomfortable and I felt like the language could’ve been cleaned up without changing the story.

Lastly, I had a hard time liking the main characters. I didn’t like how they treated and spoke to other characters and there was very little about their personalities that made me like them. I liked seeing Ellie grow and overcome some of her past mistakes and guilt, but I didn’t understand why all the other characters were falling all over her when she wasn’t very nice to them.

If you like fantasy’s royal love triangles with magic, don’t mind some crude language, and aren’t bothered by some open door romantic moments and conversations, you may very well enjoy this book.

3.5 stars. This is a pretty good debut novel by Megan Lynn Rose. She created a fantasy world that I felt like she needed to build on more. I found myself asking a lot of questions. And sometimes the words and language that was used felt out of place to me. She did a great job on the love triangle. Both guys are great and it's hard to see who she'll pick. There is a closed door scene and a lot of talk about "doing it." I don't think this was necessary. I felt like it was a main subject. The magic and the dark witch were intriguing but I needed a little more backstory to understand. Lots of twists and cliffhangers kept me interested.

This is Megan Lynn Rose’s debut novel. This book was super creative and had a whole new world that Megan created. And…I need the next book. 😅

This book made me hungry. 😂 Megan did a great job explaining detail so much that I wanted to eat all the yummy food that Ellie was offered while at the palace. 😅 Plus, I’m a foodie and am instantly drawn to any and all references to food.

The scenes with the Dark Witch gave me CHILLS! It took me a bit to understand the world building and even who the Dark Witch is. Megan gives you enough information to make you ask questions and turn the next page. There were little bits that dragged on, but then there’d be a plot twist and brought me back again. Also…Ellie was great and all, but sometimes I wanted to strangle her. Why was she being so rude to poor Micah and dismissing his love. 😩 Same with Aden. I had a hard time connecting to their characters and respecting them. I’m a fan of Micah all the way!

Kingdom of Lies is the mother of all love triangles!! Dang! I should warn you…there isn’t a clear winner at the end. Both guys are there for Ellie and you really don’t know what will happen in their love story. I NEED book two pronto. I’m Team Micah all the way!! When you read it, let me know which team you’re on.

Disclaimer: There is a closed-door sex scene that is a center point of the plot. It also contains swear words and some rude behavior.

Kingdoms of lies is a debut novel for a series with a lot of promise.

The world is one the author made up, wherein some citizens are Magi, people with magical people. The history of the country slowly unfolds, as we learn more about the main character Ellie, and the royal family. This book has constant plot twists, but it doesn’t feel choppy at all.

Ellie has a history with the Dark Witch, who killed her sister, but spared her. She has been working towards adopting her younger sister, while refusing to make room for her best friend Micah in her heart as anything more than a friend.

The Dark Witch is an intense villain. The royal family is complicated and full of surprises. Ellie is brought to the castle to be a contestant to marry the prince, Aden, and it starts to have a bachelor feel to it towards the end that made me smile. Aden and Ellie don’t plan to take their courting seriously and their reasons slowly reveal themselves, while feelings for each other grow.

This story is a love triangle. If you asked me if I liked love triangles, I would say most definitely not. Did I read and get totally hooked on Twilight and The Hunger Games? Yes I did, so obviously I enjoy love triangles a little more than I think I do. I also really enjoyed this one, because there wasn’t any relationships happening at the same time. I don’t like cheating. While I was reading, I felt like Ellie should have made a pros and cons list to choose between her marital prospects. I still do that for her here.

Micah (pros): he’s been looking out for her for years, he knows everything about her and has loved her through all of her difficult times, he has resilient love (even when she wasn’t in a good mental place to love him back, he still loved her and stayed by her side for years), he treats her sister like family, he makes sure she’s protected, he helped to teach her about her powers and how to defend herself with a sword. Ellie could work with him to help other Magi. He’s apparently very good looking.
(Cons): he didn’t tell Ellie all about himself. Is there a reason he didn’t explain himself to her? I’m hoping there’s a good reason.

Aden (pros): he’s a prince and has a really nice castle, he’s loyal to his people and is an involved leader, he stands up for Ellie, he’s a loyal person who is willing to make big personal sacrifices for duty, he has good taste in women (Ellie- a commoner), he forgives Ellie and wants to love her as she is. Ellie could make a big difference for the people in the kingdom with him.
(Cons): he can’t really understand Ellie’s background. He doesn’t always let Ellie defend herself. He’s bossy. Ellie’s heart doesn’t seem to be completely committed. Maybe that’s a sign? Maybe they just need more time.

The book has a sort of happy ending, but also kind of leaves you hanging, in a good way.

The author sent me an advanced copy in exchange for my review. The opinions are my own. While this is a closed door romance, I would rate it as PG-13, because there is some mature talk about something that happened behind closed doors, as well as some periodic language.

Story Notes

The debut story by Megan will draw you into the world of Magi, Witches and a search for true love and purpose.

I am slowly learning to love the YA and the Fantasy genres of books and its mainly due to engaging stories like this one. The first chapter grabs you instantly and doesn't let you go until the cliff hanger last page......so really it doesn't let you go at all. I am certainly looking forward to the next book because I NEED to know what will happen. I loved meeting Ellie, Micah, and Aden, along with all the rest of the characters. Ellie is a strong female lead with just the right amount of vulnerability to keep her from being standoffish. She has a great goal in mind to save her sister from their parents abuse but she will need help to make it happen. Micah has been her best friend for years and knows all her secrets. He has loved her almost as long as he has known her but she's not returning his love. He was her first everything but the help she needs with her sister is beyond his ability....unless they marry. Ellie rejects this idea quicker than Micah likes but she does continue to ponder it. That is, until the crown prince of Terra, Aden, requests Ellie become a prospect in his search for a queen to rule with him. Shocked and not a little out of place with the royals, Ellie agrees in the hopes she can request Aden's help in finding a way to adopt her sister. But there is more at work in this kingdom than anyone knows and danger is lurking just out of sight, ready to pounce at the opportune time. I'm stopping there with my recap so I don't spoil anything but I will say that you need to read this marvelous book. There is a love-triangle aspect to this story which isn't my favorite trope but I still enjoyed it overall. I'm definitely Team Micah as I see Aden as too immature and changeable to really be of help and support to Ellie. She has incredible power that Micah is much more equipped to handle and has done much to ensure her safety she doesn't even know about. I'm gonna be really mad if they don't end up together.....no, seriously, I will, LOL! So, go grab your copy of this book and get ready for a crazy start of an adventure towards one's purpose and true love that will leave you hoping book 2 is coming VERY SOON.

Content warning - closed door intimacy scene implied and referenced occasionally. Some minor swearing is also included but is not frequent.

I received this temporary complimentary E-book from Megan Rose via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review but am pleased to do so. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

This is a really great fantasy book by a debut author. This book explores so many beautiful topics such as self-love and realizing ones self-worth and acceptance. This book was a very easy read and finished it in less than 2 days. It does depicts a closed door romance/ fade to black scene that does become a central plot, so trigger warning for that in case that bothers anyone, but I found it was done very tasteful. It does appear to be a fantasy world that does meet some real-world location settings. I feel like this book would be best for a cozy day read or for those wanting to get into the fantasy genre.

*Spoilers Below*

For those that read the book, I am totally team Finn. I feel like he was the best one for her and the nicest. He listened to her and never was rude or pushed into something she'd be uncomfortable with.

I did not like Prince Aiden as her potential partner. I felt he was selfish and narcissistic and problematic. He was constantly judging her for not living up to his standard of the perfect woman and hurt her severely by judging her for her past.

I did not Micah as her potential partner. He was very hurt over her rejection, which I got, but the way he got overly angry with her for her choices and tried to place it as coming from a point of love still doesn't validate it.

I don't like Dan as her partner, but he would be my second choice. He constantly threw himself at her and got her into trouble by trying to basically assault her in a closet and her gett8ng caught which he did clearly take the blame but he cause so many problems for her but I di appreciate how at the end they became friends and I could tell he does care and is trying so brownie points for him for trying.

The magic system I looovveeeedddd. The descriptions of the colors and how the magic system works kept me super intrigued! And I'm definitely interested in book 2 bc I want to see what happens between the fact The Witch (Ameerah) is Queen Anasta's sister.

Also, I have a gut feeling that we haven't seen the full story of what happened to Ellie's little sister Thea, who was taken by Ameerah. There's a reason she wants the other two sisters, Ellie and Britta, and I'm very curious to find out!

I defn think this is a great 5-star book for YA Intro to Fantasy. And needs to be read as such. I saw some lower reviews, but don't let that deter you from this book. It really is a good debut book from the author, and it definitely gets better as you read. I think the lower review issue was that it felt childish or too YA or juvenile, but that's legit the books category and can't be held equally to other books. I'd say this book is more ofThe Selection meets YA Fantasy. But it really was amazing and deserves all the stars!.

Super long series starter of a dark Cinderella story

This was a fun, but a veeeery long read. The tropes - the chosen one, rags to riches, girl can’t choose between 2 guys. If you like Twilight & last, darker Harry Potter books with fighting in them - this one’s for you.

Ellie is a Magi with personal trauma who has to hide her powers and keeps herself to herself, supporting her lot by sugarmaking. Having lost one sister, Ellie needs to marry to adopt her younger sister. Prince Aden needs to marry to be crowned king. Sounds like an ideal match, right? Soon Ellie is swept into castle intrigue and a princess contest, all for the sake of changing the law that would allow single women a right to adopt. There is a tragic beginning and a potential love triangle buildup. For a while I thought Ellie would have her pick of not 2 but 3 guys, so technically, this could potentially even qualify as reverse harem.

This is labelled as YA romance although the heroine is 21yo in the prologue and 26yo for the main part of the book, which for me would be NA. It’s a #superlongseriesstarter - 400 pages. I did get tired of the sheer volume and am probably not going to continue with the series, despite the cliffhanger ending. Am not afraid of large books, but to give my tbr a fair chance of decreasing, I do prefer fast-paced & short-lived reads.

The book is an interesting blend of magical fantasy with a whiff of portal fantasy. There are allusions to there being other dimensions, but the secret protection force’s secrets might be revealed in later books.

At about 1/5 in, the book starts blending medieval fairytale with modern day world. There are blips of other modern references like telegrams (while the world still has horse-drawn carriages) and Chicago and Lake Michigan as fairytale world places, plus the author’s use of “robotic” as adjective - but not enough for a convincing mashup between a tech world and a fairytale one.

While it’s mostly dra-ma and actioney & lots of growing up and self-doubt from Ellie (to the point that I wanted to kick her for see-sqwing between two fine men), I did chuckle at blue, lavender and teal magic of the 3 sisters - it reminded me of Flora, Fauna & Merriweather.

Upside: interesting and fast-paced with real issues set in fairytale world despite the length. Downside: the length.

Recommended for fans of lower age range NA fantasy that love coming of age & rags to riches stories with slow-building romance with modern day relationship issues (like first times & past mistakes) or who like reverse harem & lengthy series starters.

This book was like a fantasy version of the Selection with some Red Queen thrown in (in a "can't trust anyone, everyone's going to betray me" kind of way). Ellie, the MC, is a 26-year-old Magi, a magic-user, who was abused by her parents for having magic and has left home to live alone in the woods on a maple syrup farm and work as a sugar-maker. She wants to adopt her younger sister, Britta, so that Britta can also escape their abusive parents, but is told that she has to get married to do so first.

Her childhood best friend, Micah, has secrets of his own. He loves Ellie and wants to help her adopt Britta (by marrying her), but she's scared of letting anyone get too close and scared of falling in love. Their relationship is wracked by fights and jealousy as Ellie doesn't want to let him get too close, until Ellie runs away and accepts an offer from Prince Aden to live in the palace and be courted by him.

Throughout the story, we watch Ellie struggle with her fears of vulnerability, her fear that she can't be loved, and her guilt about watching her younger sister, Thea, die. Ellie and Aden slowly fall in love, but not without their fair share of struggles.

I honestly don't *love* either side of the love triangle. I feel that we didn't see enough of Micah for me to get to know him, but Aden kept on judging and being harsh to Ellie every time they managed to get close. Also, why

One problem

2.5 stars. There were some good things going for this book (for me at least, it was primarily the strong bond between sisters and how the MC puts so much work into having a good relationship with her youngest sister though there's a bit of an age gap), and I'm sure this book will appeal to many readers, but sadly, it fell a bit short for me- here's why (major spoilers ahead!)...

(MAJOR SPOILERS!!!) There were way too many tropes/ ideas going on at the same time, like, a lot.
Simple would've been better. The magical world wasn't well developed- we see random pieces of magic/ otherness, but we're not told why (for example, this story takes place in a fantasy world with a dangerous forest and evil witch, but then Chicago is mentioned at one point. We don't find out the connection, at least not in this book. Some people are born with magical abilities, but we're not told where this originates from or why these people have magic). All the MC's are in their 20's, but this reads like a YA (and minus a few curse words, a younger YA). One of the many tropes was your typical love triangle, however it was sort of a square by adding the prince's older brother (and this was pretty weird because we never find out why he showed any interest in the MC at all, it was very left field). Speaking of the older brother, we're told that he abdicated the crown and left (hinted at in disgrace), but then he returns to the castle acting his normal but no one finds this weird. The MC moved out on her own to a little cottage when she came of age, but we don't know how/ where she got the money to buy it- her parents are described as good-for-nothings who would take any money going in- they were really upset that she moved out and wouldn't be giving them her wages- so again, where did she get the money from? There were other things that didn't add up for me, but these were the major points.

Kingdom of Lies immediately caught my interest from the beginning. Ellie is a wonderful character whose greatest dream is to take care of her sisters. In a devastating loss right from the beginning, her sister Thea is taken by the Dark Witch. Yet, Ellie is left alive. She is haunted by this pain into the present, where she is seeking to adopt her other younger sister, Britta. And rescue her from an abusive household. But an unmarried woman is not allowed such a privilege (to adopt) in the Kingdom of Terra.

As Ellie tries to achieve her goal, she is tempted by two good men. Micah her best friend and strength, with secrets. And Prince Aden newly met and honor bound, attempting to sort out his future. Both could solve her problem but only one can claim her heart and with whispers of the return of the Dark Witch, Ellie may have more pressing matters than she initially suspects.

I will say I do not like love triangles. In fact, usually if they go beyond one book and have 'teams' that is when I'm out. But Mrs. Rose has managed to hook my interest with her story. And I like both guys enough that I could be happy either way Ellie's heart goes. The magic and adventure in this story was compelling enough to keep me reading. And I will definitely be eager to see where this will go. Hoping Mrs. Rose won't keep us in suspense for too long! Definitely recommend this debut novel to anyone who loves a good fantasy read!

Side note for possible triggers: There is mention of abuse, a woman is dragged into a closet by a man (but not malicious), and lots of kissing with a closed door romance scene for those who may want to be aware.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I really enjoyed Kingdom of Lies! This YA fantasy book had me hooked and wanting to read it as much as I could! It was an easy read- with fantasy, magic, a complicated, yet sweet, love story. The story had twists I didn’t see coming and I enjoyed it that much more for keeping me on my toes!

A little about the story, with some possible spoilers..

Ellie is a commoner who has sworn off love due to a poor example of love and marriage from her parents. She lives alone in a recluse area, earning a living as a sugar maker. Her younger sister was nurseries by an evil witch, so Ellie does everything she can to protect her remaining younger sister who remains at home with their parents.

Her childhood best friend, Micah, clearly adores her and there is much to their story. He is often the run Ellie turns to.

Ellie has a run in with Prince Aden, that leads to his invitation to the castle to partake in the prospect selection process. She becomes one of five participants vying for the princes had, and the first commoner to do so.

Inside the castle Ellie is swept away in preparations, and eventually she and the Prince begin courting. There are twists and turns as Ellie adjusts to life in the castle, and dealing with the idea of love. In addition to growing feeling for Prince Aden, she is reminded of her love for Micah.

Just when I thought the story would end with a happy ending, it takes a turn when the Dark Witch returns!

I cannot wait to read book two and see where Ellie’s story goes!

Kingdom of Lies is the debut novel by Megan Lynn Rose. It was a fun read and very character driven.

Some things that I enjoyed from this book was the world and character building. By the end of the book, it felt like I knew the characters very well and I could picture the setting of the story clearly. Megan described her world in great detail and sometimes it felt very real. This is one of the few fantasy genre books I've read and I was really glad for it. I really enjoyed getting to know Ellie and her growth throughout the book as well as Aden and Micah. Micah was probably my favorite character.

Some things I did not enjoy; it took me a few chapters to really get into the story. There was a lot of information given right off and at times it was a bit too much. I also feel like there were too many small plots happening within the story, and it was difficult to keep at times. The love triangle trope is not my favorite, but I think it worked well with this story.

Each character had many unique characteristics that made them stand out. The story took many twists and turns that really surprised you throughout the book. I started reading the book expecting the story to go one way and it totally went another way. The book has a happy ending but it also leaves you in a bit of a cliffhanger, enough to leave you hungry for the next book!

I received an advanced copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I read this book on KU.

It's like The Selection series meets fantasy romance.

Summary: Ellie Parrish is still reeling from the loss of her younger sister, who was killed by The Dark Witch. Ellie and her sisters all possess magic, a rarity. Now, Ellie's main goal is to save her youngest sister from their abusive parents who happen to hate magic. The only problem is that the kingdom won't let a single woman adopt. When Ellie's childhood best friend offers to marry her, she considers accepting. Micah has crashed on her for years but Ellie doesn't want to allow herself to love because of what love did to her parents. But when a chance encounter with the crown prince presents an opportunity for Ellie to live at the castle and be courted, she thinks that's the answer to all her problems. Pretend to like the prince and convince him to change the law. Then Micah shows back up at the castle as one of Ellie's guards. Ellie isn't expecting to fall for either men, but what will she do when she starts to fall for both of them?

Genre: YA Romantic Fantasy

If you liked The Selection book series you NEED to read this book!

Spice level: This book is not spicy. The characters have some romantic thoughts but no explicit scenes.

Characters: I really loved all 3 main characters. They are young adults and sometimes they act more like teenagers but they are loveable even if they are stupid or annoying sometimes. I honestly couldn't decide if I was team Micah or team Aden when reading and as long as both guys get a HEA I am happy with whatever happens in book 2. I especially loved seeing Ellie grow and learn to accept herself and her magic.

Plot and theme - It took me a few days from start to finish for this book but only because I was busy. The story was definitely gripping and a page turner. It was a nice sweet romance, easy read, perfect for me to break-up the heavier romances I read. The ending leaves you craving book 2 wondering what Ellie's decision will be, what will happen to The Dark Witch and the kingdom. And I think there are more secrets to be revealed from Micah.

The author does this amazing thing where every sentence feels like its presenting you with new information. It isn't overwhelming or action packed but every sentence has a purposed. It can be as simple as describing the weather outside but that gives us description for the day and even helps determine time of year. I love books with this kind of detailed writing and I feel I don't see it often enough.

I would recommend this book and would categorize it as a favorite for my 2023 reads.

I have know Megan Lynn on Facebook for awhile. Before she published this book. When it was just a draft. But due to some personal things going on in my life, I didn't want to read it since it had romance in it.

However, I started it a couple of days ago and realized that I couldn't put it down except to sleep and work.

I loved this book so much with the characters and the wonderful world building.

Ellie did have some issues making decisions, as others have said, but she is a YA and all YAs make dumb decisions. I love her and all she stands for.

Ellie's love her sisters is how I love my siblings. I wish she would have had more time with Thea but because of Thea, she is stronger and wiser.

This world was built intricately and I love all of it.

I was also so hoping Inda was Thea with memories erased. I hate that Inda died because it just broke Ellie even more since she reminded her so much of Thea.

Also, I'm Team ........ Aden. I think. I'm actually stuck trying to figure that out. Finn and Dan are good to her too.

There was a lot I liked about this. I enjoyed the writing style and loved Ellie's determination to adopt her sister.

At a glance, this seemed like it would be very similar to the Selection series, complete with love triangle, but it's different in that there wasn't much focus on the other girls of the competition or the competition itself. In fact, the "competition" felt like such a minor part of the plot that I kept forgetting it was happening.

There were a lot of interesting worldbuilding elements in this book, but I became more and more confused as the book went on trying to keep track of all the plot threads.

The romance felt a little sudden. It looks like any sequels would be leaning in heavily to the love triangle aspect of the story, so I'm not sure if I'll continue reading this particular series. I think this particular story itself wasn't really working for me, but I enjoyed the writing style enough that I'd love to read another book by this author.

nice twist on the princess contest plot, but…

So this book started off great, if a little slow. I give this one three stars bc I very much appreciate that despite the MFC’s mistakes, she’s never a doormat. She’s got a good head on her shoulders and owns her mistakes. And is trying to do good in the world despite the poor hand she’s been dealt.

But….as the story/writing progressed it seems to become more juvenile in its writing. I’m not sure if that’s the right word, but the over-descriptions of minor details, such as “tears fell from her eyes” & what the characters are thinking…it just seems like something a new-ish author would write. Definitely less polished than I was hoping for. It seems as if some editing might help? I wish I could articulate my feelings a little better, but the only words I can think of are juvenile or sophomoric writing.

Great plot, I hope the next books have more depth to them with more polish and less over-description of minor details. These things don’t set the scene, they distract from the content and meaning of the story.

I've been team Micah from the get go and that still stands.

3/5 stars

When I first started this book i wasn't a huge fan of the writing and I felt it would have been better in first pov. And things were also a bit confusing and felt like an info dump. And that's about all the negative things I have to say about this book.

To say I loved the plot would be an understatement. It was so interesting and the twists kept on coming and coming. I loved Ellie even though she was a bit annoying at times but I loved that she had depth to her character. Her love for her sisters were just beyond this world and I loved that.

Aden was also so precious. And even though I'm team Micah I loved him too. To say I was conflicted would be putting it lightly.

The story was very original and well thought out right down to the details. Megan is a fantastic author and I'm on my way to read the bonus scenes.

Great Beginning to an amazing trilogy!

I love, love, loved this book! Princes, peasants, magic, witches, tragedy, lies, betrayal, LOVE…all the things. Ellie was a common magi choosing to live her life alone in solitude after suffering a loss. She had one friend Micah that she kept at a distance. One day she met Aden when he rescued her, little did she know he was the prince and he was choosing a princess, she was invited to the castle. She chose to go and entered a life of royalty she could have never imagined but in doing so she left Micah behind. I won’t give away all the details, but there is sooooo much more to this story and it kept me engaged at all times. As a mom to a young teenage girl I do recognize and appreciate that this book is something I can hand her, good clean content! I can’t wait to see if she loves it just as much as I did!

This author did a fantastic job with her debut novel! The world, characters and plot were fantastic.

I like how the world building is gradual. As you read on you learn more and more about how things work in this world and helps better understand the characters. The characters even learn more about their environment.

This has got to be the best done love triangle! I have my favorite but you might have a different one… they are both that great. I love how they all grow and can see the ending with either guy. There is an ending but hoping for a sequel!!!

This book is full of adventure, growth, love, forgiveness, learning, loyalty and friendship.

This is a great debut novel with many exciting elements!

It has a great first line/beginning that will really hook you into the story!

If you enjoy: fantasy and magic, royalty, a love triangle, fake relationship trope, friends-to-lovers trope - then this book is for you!

Head's up! This book will be part of a series so it ends HFN (happy for now) with a bit of a cliffhanger! ahhh I need to know how everything ends up for Ellie! I have NO clue who she will end up with (Micah or Aden), and both characters were well written and I can't decide who I like more for Ellie!

Content warning: This book is a closed-door romance. There are mature themes and innuendos, and some language.

When I first heard about this book I was excited about the concept. I was intrigued to see how the love-triangle would work, especially since I don’t always enjoy reading love-triangles. I was happy to see that the love-triangle aspect of this story was done really well. I very quickly picked my side and am proudly Team Aden.

I really enjoyed the characters in this book. There was so much depth to them and I was immediately invested in their lives. The progression of the different relationships was also done well and was really interested.

Probably the thing I liked the least about this book was that I felt as if there was too much going on. If you read the blurb above you will think the focus is the romance and relationships. Yes, this is a big part of the book but the magic plot line is just as big as the romance. This meant that at times it felt like there were two complete stories going on simultaneously. The book was enjoyable but did feel like it was a lot.

This is the first book in the series and I was glad that ti did not end on a cliffhanger. I will say that this book is not necessarily a happily-every-after, it is more a happy-for-now.

I truly enjoyed reading this book! The world building took a minute to grasp, but it didn’t drag out super long (as some fantasy books can).

The beginning of the book instantly hooks you in and gets your mind curious about events.

The suspense, twists, and turns has you second guessing several characters throughout the book. Who can you trust? While other moments have your jaw to the floor.

I personally loved the personal growth for the main character Ellie. <3

I can’t wait to read the next book!!

If you like the selection

If you are a fan of The Selection you will love this book. Rose weaves a wonderful story in a dystopian fantasy world. The writing is good and the characters are lovable. There are several twists and turns that I did not expect which is always a plus to me.
Of course I need to know what's going to happen next so I have to read the next book!!
It's like The Selection meets ACOTAR...

Kingdom of Lies

A fantastic start to a new series by Megan Lynn Rose. This story is incredibly well written, immersive, engaging and hard to put down. The characters are all well developed, lovable, and their growth throughout the story was great with room to grow in future books. Megan beautifully weaves her world building brilliantly, creatively and magically throughout the story. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend reading it! Now on to the next book!

A great start to a new series

This book was a fun change of pace for the fantasy books I normally read. I will admit, though, that the inclusion of more modern references had me wondering what class of fantasy this book fell under.

Other than that this book kept me reading far too late most nights and left me ready for book 2

I absolutely loved this book. I literally couldn’t put it down. I started it around 8 in the morning one day and finished it around midnight after taking breaks to take care of the kiddos and such.

Being a debut novel I had no idea what to expect with her writing style, but I loved it and it sucked me in so quickly!
