For L. G. Rollins, conversations regarding Schrodinger’s cat, the effects of scientific advancements on politics, and whether Infinity is better categorized as a number or an idea are all quite commonplace. To be short, she is an unapologetic nerd. Mix in her love of whimsy and the unusual, and you get Steam and Shadow, a steampunk series of science, sweet romance, and unexpected adventures.

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. Wow, one little lie sure took on a life of it's own in this story. I love the Lockhart family and have really been wishing for Venetia's HEA. Edmund is a great guy. I love how attentive he is to Venetia and so understanding. It was a blessing. Their story got a little crazy at times, but it was beautiful and made me cry a few times. This has been a fun series.
When I read Laura Rollins' opening scene in A Well-Kept Promise featuring strawberry picking, it was adorable, and I was instantly pulled right in. This was the first Laura Rollins book I've read and I really enjoyed her writing style. She created interesting characters that were slowly developed so that we were both invested and intrigued. She delved into a few complicated topics in her book which were both researched well and handled delicately, giving the story and the characters as a whole added depth. I enjoyed the book immensely and was even more impressed when she took me by surprise twice near the end of the book. I always love an author with unique stories, and whose characters do the unexpected and delightful,
This story of Venetia was a wonderful story for her and Edmund, but also included the further telling of the other siblings stories and tied them all together. Venetia grows up and less inwardly focused. She becomes more aware of the needs of others, even as she is still viewed as a young girl by her older brothers. Edmund is a treasure to rival any book hero, including Mr. Darcy, in my opinion, but without the standoffishness. The further story of the oldest son, Felix, and his wife Jocelyn, is shared because Venetia is staying with them. I appreciate the author’s including their struggle and grief, and the need for an individual to process grief and all that goes with it (self-blame, uncertainty) in one’s own way in order to heal. There are a couple of issues I have. One is grammatical errors, which an editor should have caught, (e.g. incorrect pronouns, split infinitive), but the I am picky about grammar. The other is the use of some words or language usage that seems too contemporary for the Regency era (e.g., the word “magazine,” and phrases such as, “You know,...” to start a sentence). I may be wrong, but they seemed out of place to me. However, the overall story and character development are not affected. It is a lovely story that illustrates the value of love, honor, and respect in building long-lasting and successful marriages. I appreciate Ms. Rollins writing a series stories about a family for whom these are shared values.
Venetia Lockhart while picking Strawberries got dizzy, she braced herself till it calmed. Her family already felt they had to send her away when she got her fevers. To her room or wherever. She meets Lord Ashbrook and they eventually end up alone but still in front of the party. They start a race of who can pick the most Strawberries. As they left the Strawberries, Lord Heygate showed up. She tried several times to discourage his courting but he would not listen. For her, he tended to ruin her day, they had nothing in common. Lord Ashbrook had an infatuation of Miss Weatherford, but Venetia couldn't help him she did not know Miss Weatherford very well. Venetia knew that Lord Heygate was only interested in her dowry and the titles of her family. So comes the letter and glove idea, he writes her a love letter just a light one and she gives him a glove to drop and be evasive about it. They are two lovely friends, who think a lot about each other. The author did a wonderful job of growing said friendship into maybe more. He knew her so well as she did him. He trusted her. The tale was entertaining, exciting, and fun. The characters were so believable. It was an easy novel to read and follow along. The author wrote well and was clear. I can't wait till the next one comes out.

A sweet ending for a sweet series. I was amused how Venetia's father recognized that none of his children had "normal" courtships. That was the truth. This one is a friendship to love relationship. And I liked that it didn't have too much misunderstanding of intentions. I enjoyed the friendship phase of their relationship. It was so natural and relaxed. I'm sure they loved well before they realized it so their bond strengthened without concerns for romance. At least with romance for each other. The whole basis of their friendship was all about concerns for romance but for her it was avoidance of such and for him it was winning a particular woman.
I think my only complaint about the book is that we didn't get to actually see how they dealt with changing the views of the gossips. We got to hear the plan and we are left to assume that it happened. It would have been fun to see it in action.
Possible trigger: multiple miscarriages, grief
Sex: no Language: no Violence: a little *I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire series. I highly recommend reading them in order if possible. Each one is five stars as far as I’m concerned. These are clean and wholesome stories with fun and engaging characters. Each book gives us a bit of insight into more than just the main character. This book is Venetia’s story, who we’ve slowly been getting to know in previous stories, but we also get to read more about all of the other siblings from the previous stories in this one as well. I always enjoy seeing where characters lives end up after their own story is finished so I really enjoyed this aspect of the story. As to the main characters themselves... Edmund won my heart from the very start. He and Venetian had an instant connection/friendship which I’m really glad was based on friendship and not just instant attraction. To see their relationship develop throughout the story was delightful. We really get to see Venetia blossom as well. Personal growth and looking beyond ones own self is definitely a focus of this story which I enjoyed. Overall the entire story was full of delightful and engaging content with a feel good ending. I’m sad to have the series end but am looking forward to reading future regency novels by this author. I received an ARC from the author, however this in no way influenced my review and I am under no obligation to leave one.
I have enjoyed every one of the books in this series and I was really looking forward to Venetia's story. Venetia and Edmund had very different things they wanted to accomplish but they decided to work together to get what they each wanted. What they didn't expect was that their friendship would turn into something more than either had expected and give them a happy ending that they each wanted.
This is a clean story of romance, acceptance and understanding. It was also fun to get updates from other siblings lives in the earlier stories of this series. I also liked the explanation of the research explained at the end of the story about the illness/condition that Edmund and Venetia suffered from. This was a worthy ending to this series and I look forward to many more wonderful books by this author.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
I have read and loved every book in the Lockhart series, but I think this final one may just be my favorite!
Venetia and Edmund meet at a picnic and form an easy friendship. As they converse, they realize they can help solve each other's problem: Venetia wants to drive away a determined but unwanted suitor, and Edmund wants to catch the attention of a certain Miss Weatherford. They strike a deal without realizing their actions will have unintended consequences.
The banter and chemistry between Edmund and Venetia was simply magical, and I loved that they both have optimistic and fun loving natures. Their similar pasts also help them to understand each other on a deeper level. I loved Venetia's character growth toward the end - it brought an added maturity to her character.
I truly loved having all the other Lockhart siblings reappear in the story and the epilogue was so delightful. Now I need to go read Heath and Penelope's story!
Another 5 star captivating romance from an amazing author! I am sad the series is ending but can't wait to see what she writes next!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but it in no way affected my review.
I have seriously enjoyed reading L. G. Rollins’ Lockhart series and Venetia's story did not disappoint! It was so neat to see the youngest and "sickly" Lockhart's character come to life and really appreciate the strength she had. I felt like both her and Edmund's personal struggles were very inspiring and I love the depth it gave this novel. The friendship the two establish is what really endeared their romance to me and I couldn't help smiling throughout this whole book. I also truly enjoyed how the other Lockhart family members were incorporated into this story and felt like it was the perfect ending to the series. While this book can be read as a standalone, it was definitely nice knowing the backstories of the other siblings. This is a sweet clean romance, well-written and original, I highly recommend this book and the entire Lockhart family series!
Though lacking the danger and suspense found in the other 2 books I’ve read from this series (1 and 3), this is a charming romance and a great read. Both MCs have physical ailments that heavily impact their lives and shape their characters. Their friendship is natural and sweet, and I like how they were able to relate to and support one another. I admit that the switch from friend to ‘love’ happened quite suddenly, but it wasn’t too jarring and didn’t detract from the book.
Laura Rollins is quickly becoming a favorite author. Her ability to weave an engaging story is quite amazing. I love her writing style and can’t wait to read more of her books.
Content: There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is no real message of faith or God.
Poor sickly Venetia was prone to frequent fevers after she broke her arm as a child. No one truly understood why she had fevers so often after the arm had healed. Her father had sought the best doctors and they only offered confinement until the fever passed. She was not contagious during this time, she was just feverish. Edmund had suffered infantile paralysis at age two and one leg had not developed as fully or strongly as the other. He wore a boot and brace to compensate for his weakness. Both of these people had learned to deal with their suits and possessed sharp mental complexities. They were bright and quick witted. It didn't take them long to discover that people who were fairer of face often lacked the mental acuity to hold their attention for very long.
Finally, we have Venetia's story. Frustrated at having her Season cut short by her infernal fevers, Venetia is worried that she will never get a full Season. Lord Ashbrook is enjoying his time in the country but wishes to catch the attention of a certain lady. When Venetia and Lord Ashbrook meet, a scheme forms, promising to benefit them both. Will they be able to pull it off? Or will her brothers find out? This was a great finale to the series. I was able to sympathize with Venetia feeling limited by her health but still wanting fun and adventure. I really liked Lord Ashbrook. Some parts even had me laughing out loud. You can depend on this being a clean, sweet romance. I can wholly recommend it.
“It’s a fine thing...to find someone who understands you.”
Charming story of 2 people who had each suffered permanent effects of illness medicine could not prevent or treat in the 1800’s. Each found it difficult to participate in all the activities expected of young people searching for a mate. In an attempt to help each other capture the attention and heart of someone else, their partnership enabled them to come to know and appreciate each other. A sweet, clean story that will touch your heart and make you thankful for living in a time when medical advances have helped prevent or cure the illnesses they suffered.
I have to admit that I’m sad to get to the last book in the Lockhart Sweet Regency Romance series by L. G. Rollins. A Well-Kept Promise was a wonderful ending though to this series. I think it’s my favorite of the five books. Such a great beginning of fast friendship between Venetia and Edmund. I loved how their friendship progressed and blossomed into more as their scheme and the story continued. The ending was perfect as well and I enjoyed reading about the siblings from the previous books. I recommend the whole series! I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own and are expressed voluntarily.
This regency was spunky! I loved it! The main characters both suffer from long-term health problems and they create a tight bond over these issues. Their friendship is forged over their similarities, even though their health issues are quite different, but it allows them to quickly understand each other in a way that others would never get. It was a fast paced book and it hooked me. It was also number 5 of a series, and there were hints to the other stories inside, although it didn't detract from the story at all. I read this one just fine without knowing anything about the previous four books.
Four and a half stars for the conclusion of a great series. By conclusion I mean all the Lockhart siblings were granted their happy ever afters and this was the last one.
Each are written as stand alone book, but I find them all richer reading in sequence as I love to see the characters reoccurring in each of the books.
I enjoyed the storyline of two who suffered from long term illness and the inner strength that was developed by it. I also loved the compassion that was also developed but had to be found as well.
Strong characters and well developed plot create a great world that is fun to escape into.
I loved this book! This was a great ending to the Lockhart family series. I felt like I could relate to Venetia in a lot of ways as I have a chronic illness and Venetia has chronic fevers. I loved how Venetia was able to find someone who was able to understand her so well. I also really liked how Venetia and Edmund grew from their struggles and they were much better because of them. I really liked what happened at the end with Venetia's family as well. The series wrapped up nicely and I am sad that it is over! I highly recommend it for fans of regency romance!
4.5* I love that Ms. Rollins' books have connected characters, yet can stand alone for the story they are. This was a lovely bookend for a set of siblings' books and I was delighted by the characters' depth and strength. The plot was engaging and the writing was clear and smooth. Watching Edmund and Venetia come to know themselves and each other was a sweet tale of mishaps and true devotion.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
There are so many things to love about this book. Venetia is kind, loving, passionate, fun loving and sick of being babied. She frequently gets fevers that has her family treating her like an invalid instead of a grown adult. Edmund is also a kind, loving, honest person who is dealing with his own infirmity. When the two meet it is an instant friendship. They decide to help each other achieve their goals. Craziness ensues. I would highly recommend this book. It is fun, romantic and the scene at toward the end with the father is wonderful.
I’ve read all of the Lockhart series and I have loved them all. I am so glad I got to finally read what happens with Venetia. I loved her (Venetias) spirit and optimism. The author did a great job finding a fun way for the two main characters to meet and gain a friendship. Every book I’ve read by this author has been fantastic and this one is no exception. I didn’t want to put it down once I started reading. It had everything I look for in a book: romance, funny moments, heart and a happy ever after.
As I have read the earlier books of this series I was intrigued by Venetia. She always seemed to be the sick one in the corner. It was so nice to read her story and get to know her. I loved the interactions between her and Edmund and the way he takes her seriously for herself and saves the day! A book I look forward to reading again and one that finishes the series off nicely! I recommend reading this book.
This was a normal fake relationship in a different era that made it so much more interesting than the usual contemporary stories. Yet I found the characters to be shallow and some things difficult to swallow, like a lord and lady kneeling and crawling in the garden to pick strawberries. With the odd proof reading error I wasn’t overly impressed, but it was a nice short read.
I really enjoyed lady venetia's love story. It unfolded as the young people found ways to further their relationships with others. It also highlighted the trials of those times in regards to loss of pregnancy, osteomylitis and polio. As always a good read and a nice change from other romances as there's an actual story to enjoy as you get to know the characters.
Great read. There were moments of sadness, lost, and some despair that comes from life, but was all very realistic and in tune with the story.
The friendship and love that developed between the two main characters was unique in the series and sweet to watch grow though out there journey. They both had health problems, but did it let it dictate their lives.
The final scene of Penelope and Heath just brought everything together. A satisfying ending
This is a romance that will have you laughing and rooting for love. I love how intelligent, crafty, understanding, brave, lovable, determined and fun Lady Venetia is! The characters are the best and the story unique. This book has action, a fake letter, a well-placed glove, gossip, friendship, protective family, outings, consequences, romance, love, a cad, secret plans, humor and more!
The above statement is true if you are not the reader of Regency romances. If you are you know how this is going to end, you just don’t know the paths it will take. Those paths are worth reading. L. G. Rollins has written a wonderful story with a cute meet, misdirections, memorable characters, humor and compelling story line. I loved following all those paths.
Venetia is the young lady this story is with us at this time. I feel equal to her as far as illness super care takers are concerned They are showing their) ove for her and keeping her safe. She wants to experience life to its fullest. Now the dilemma begins. Read and enjoy this story I did!!!!!
Scheming, secrecy, heartbreak, and love. One thing leads to another.
The secret pact that Lady Venetia and Edmund of Ashbrook make to ward off a suitor she doesn't like and gain the attention of a woman he is interested in doesn't work out as planned. Failure leads them to each other .
