Sunday at the Sunflower Inn

Rate this book
Jessica Ann McKenzie—“Jam” to everyone in Honey Creek—has fulfilled her dream of owning the best restaurant for miles around. Serving candlelit dinners to every couple in town on Valentine’s Day is a reminder of another dream, one she’s just about given up on. Until, that very night, Sergeant Tucson Smith clambers out of the muddy river and onto her land, bringing the promise of something they’ve both been searching for.

When McCoy Mason crashes on Interstate 45, he doesn’t just bust up his Mustang, his leg, and his relationship. He also loses his prospects of a job and apartment in Houston. Honey Creek, home to his estranged grandfather, offers a temporary respite, a place to recover before moving on again. After all, what permanent use could a town so picture-perfect have for a man like him?

At sixty-seven, Charles H. Winston III lives by order and routine. One of his most cherished rituals is a regular lunch date with three lovely ladies at the Honey Creek Café, including the very proper Miss Lilly Lambert. But it’s not too late to surprise the whole town—or himself—by seizing a chance for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. And there’s no better season than spring, when the warm breeze blowing in from the Brazos River brings fresh hope and second chances to those who need them most . . .

This is a Women's Fiction/Romance, and this is the fourth book in the Honey Creek series. I have not read the first three books in this series. The author told this book in a weird way for me, and it took me a long while to get used to the way this book was told. There was so much going on and there was way to many storylines going on. This book was several storylines and character that merge into one at the end. I loved the end of this book, and I loved how all the storylines comes together. I do feel that this book felt award when moving for one storyline to the other storyline through out this book. I saw what this author was trying to do, but I guess this type of book is just not for me. This book does have some great characters, and I think I would loved this book so much if each storyline was a whole book of its own. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Zebra Books) or author (Jodi Thomas) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

The story takes place in a small town called of Honey Creek, TX (think Virgin River vibes)

The author intertwines four very different love stories between (Girl/Boy, Man/Women, Grandfather/Father/Son, Widow/Widower). Jodi Thomas is a smooth storyteller and I loved the way the constant in all the love stories was this little town called Honey Creek.

Each individual story was full of tenderness and warmth and it kept me reading to find out how it all would end.

I enjoyed the chemistry between Jam and Segreant Thomas. The book is a clean read so there are no explicit descriptions of the bedroom scenes. It was fun to read their fun-loving bantering back and forth.

The story is a slow burn which I like, but I wish there would have been a little more steam between McCoy and Baylor.....maybe in the next book?

The young love between Melody and Mike was interesting, but not my favorite part of the story.

The romance between widower, Charles Winston and widow Lily Lambert was just so touching. As someone in middle-age and unmarried, it was heartwarming to read about a romance later in life.....it’s still possible (YAY)!!!

I would enjoy reading separate books about each main character and diving deeper into their lives and what happens after this story ends.

Definitely a made-for-the-movies type of book. Perfect for a Hallmark show. (Fingers crossed)

I highlighted so many sayings/quotes about love while reading Sunday at the Sunflower Inn because they really touched my heart.

I highly recommend it if you want a heartfelt romance with a HEA. So many book couples to love in this one!

Nobody does small town slice of life like Jodi Thomas. Her books are like a glass of lemonade with a plate of freshly baked cookies. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next one.

Sunday at Sunflower Inn by Jodi Thomas is the fourth book in the Honey Creek series. I have been blessed to read the previous books in the series and I have enjoyed each one.
Ms. Thomas has four couples in this one who are all at different times in their relationships. From young love,Mike and Melanie, "Jam" MacKenzie and Tucson Smith are in middle age and still single, McCoy Mason and Baylor Branton are in their late twenties or early thirties, and Mr. Winston and Lily are the senior lovebirds who are experiencing love for the first time. Ms. Thomas' writing flows so well and is so descriptive that I felt like I was with each character as they were living and loving throughout the book. A well-crafted plot, some mystery and intrigue, romance for all ages and all their lives begin to twine together by the end of the book. I laughed and I teared up while reading which, for me, is the best kind of book to read.

I voluntarily reviewed a digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from Zebra Books via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

Sunday at the Sunflower Inn is the fourth book in the Honey Creek series. This seems to read well as a standalone but I may have enjoyed it more if I had read the first three books.

The book follows four different couples and their love stories. Each is connected to Honey Creek in some way.
Melody and Michael were young love, disapproved of by Melanie’s parents.
Jessica owns Honey Creek Cafe and had all but given up on love until she comes across the ruggedly handsome Tucson Smith, brother of the local sheriff.
McCoy Mason, out of a job and down on his luck, decides to visit Honey Creek and reconnect with a long lost grandfather. Here he meets local Vet Baylor Blanton and is immediately smitten.
Charles and Lily, in their 60’s, are close friends but they would like to become more and spend more time together as a couple.

There was a bit of everything in this story; mystery, drama, romance and humour. I did find there was way too much angst between all the couples for my liking. I think maybe if the author concentrated on just two couples it may have been easier to keep up. I didn’t feel any chemistry between the couples and found their dialogue strange. McCoy and Tuscon felt like the same person and I think that may have been the result of too many main characters.

I was eager to see how all the different threads and characters would combine. The story kept my interest and I enjoyed it enough to read all the way to the end.

Sunday at Sunflower Inn is part of the series set in Honey Creek but can be read as a stand alone. There are four storylines in this novel but they all eventually intertwine with each other. There is Jam the owner of a restaurant and Tucson the brother of the sheriff. McCoy with his grandfather. Older couple Charles and Lilly. Young couple Melody and Michael. I enjoyed this book very much. I always enjoy Jodi Thomas’ novels. This book has a bit of everything mystery, forgiveness and romance. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington/Zebra. This is my own opinion.

I want to move to Honey Creek...

It's one of my favorite places to return to. It feels like a step back to a quieter time even though the stories are set now and their problems are still complex. And, as usual, there were not just one situation and set of lovebirds in this novel. Each plot line was unique, featuring a variety of characters, and all coming together to intertwine…

Jam was living her dream even as she felt her other wishes and hopes were going to go unfulfilled. Until a handsome, cranky stranger landed on her doorstep, that is. Tucson was a man passing through, cranky as anything, and shouldn’t have been what she was looking for. This was Honey Creek though and anything was possible…

McCoy had his own problems, including the loss of everything he’d hoped would be his fresh start. Finding family was unexpected, shocking and welcome. Sort of. Baylor became his helpmate, his love, and more family to cherish… Mike and Melanie were young, finding and navigating first love through family determined to keep them apart. Charles and Lily provided a touching glimpse into love in older age, providing an old-fashioned view of courtship that didn’t hide the devotion that lay beneath…

A mystery pulled them all together yet love was the glue. Another sweet, gentle and completely absorbing read filled with wonderful characters in a place I could only hope was real… ~Diane, 5 stars

When I started reading this book I thought it would be one of the rare ones I refuse to read. I thought I had picked out a story that was going to be filled the kind of descriptive action that makes me feel like a voyeur. (I was wrong, it is not!) Are there sexual relationships in the book? Yes, but they are, for the most part, 'off camera. Off page? So to speak.' Thank you author. There are sensual portions to the character's stories, written in good taste.
The entire book is well written and magnetic. When the potential mystery of a murder took place I was hooked. There are stories within the story that swirl around one another until it all blends together reflecting what life in a small town can be like. I laughed right out loud more that once at these richly detailed characters. Also felt emotion for them too. I can say I actually found that I cared about the characters, all of them, which is a nice surprise. I have to say I loved how the author had each character tell their story, even to showing the view point of each man. I appreciate that. It made everything more interesting. I also appreciate an author who has intelligent humor, descriptive writing and the ability to tell a story without using crass language.
I want to thank Zebra Books and NetGalley for the advanced reader's copy of this book. My rating is a 4.5 and I would definitely read more of Jodi Thomas' work.
There is sexual innuendo.

At first glance I thought that I would really enjoy this one. The bookcover is beautiful, the story seemed sweet and interesting but this one just wasn't for me.

First of all, I found it extremely confusing bouncing around between all of the characters with each chapter change. I've read books with the same layout, however, this one didn't give you enough information and time to get to know the characters before you moved on to the next chapter. I had to keep flipping back when I first started so I could remember who was who and what their story was.

Second, too many characters with unrealistic/weird personalities/actions. I know we were getting to know characters at different stages/life experiences and how love can be different related to your upbringing/life journeys. I think maybe if we would have cut out a few characters, focused on just a couple we could have gotten to know them more.

Also, too many weird insta-loves going on with no real chemistry or realistic attractions.

It did seem like a sweet little town and the author did try to wrap everyone and everything up in a pretty bow at the end.

I appreciated this free copy that I won from goodreads very much and will try another book from this author just to make sure this one just wasn't for me, maybe another one is.

Sunday at the Sunflower Inn by Jodi Thomas is a great contemporary romance that is the fourth book in the equally wonderful Honey Creek series. Such a great addition.

I loved this book, and have read all four books thus far. The author does a wonderful job weaving together different couples, threads, and romance stories together into a solid narrative that comes together around one small town in Texas. She brings together stories from different character ages, different stages in life, and different points of view. All of these different situations give us a wide array of sweet stories that come together, wrapping up together perfectly. One does not have to read all the previous books to appreciate and follow along with this one, but they are all so enjoyable, so why not read them all?

5/5 stars

Thank you NG and Zebra/Kensington Publishing for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.

I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 4/26/22.

I love having the opportunity to walk the streets of Honey Creek again and meet some of the wonderful characters that populate various places.  It's an ensemble cast again, and each character found a place in my heart.

What I really like about the characters who meet each other or have known each other for awhile, wonderful, respecting relationships grow. Romantic relationships of course, but family, friends and neighbors as well.

There is a little bit of mystery, a little bit of suspense and quite a bit of humor. Mix that with the quirky characters and the dry Texas setting, and as a reader I am hooked.

I want to name them all as my favorite character, but each one appealed to me. McCoy might come close as he buses into town, everything gone and a grandfather to meet. To say nothing of the little fairy that lives near his grandfather. Charles Winston and Miss Lily proved to be sweeties, choosing life over vegetating. Tucson and Jessica or Jam as she is known, a pair who find themselves attracted to each other. And a young teen girl and her soldier friend who provide the town with a bit of mystery.

It was all in all a delightful read, reminding the reader that there are good ordinary people out there who can bond together and live life well.

Review galley courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.

With her new novel, Sunday at the Sunflower Inn, Jodi Thomas proves why she is on my favorite authors list. This is book four in the series but easily stands alone. That said, if you love a good comfort read I highly recommend any of her books.

As usual, Jodi Thomas writes relatable (on one level or another) characters and situations. I won’t rehash the synopsis included above. I enjoy that she always includes characters of different generations in a way that isn’t caricature. In this book there is young love between a teen couple, love in the 30s for a few people, and love at last for a couple who thought it might have passed them by.

Told with the warmth and humor I’ve come to expect this was a book with characters I wasn’t ready to leave by the last page. Recommended to fans of Jodi Thomas and contemporary women’s romantic fiction. 4.5 stars rounded up.

Sunday at the Sunflower Inn by Jodi Thomas is the fourth book in her Honey Creek series. This book is about four couples. The senior citizen couple, Charles H. Winston III and Miss Lily Lambert have enjoyed life even though neither one ever married. Both decide to see what being a couple is like so become engaged but have no plans to marry. Jessica Ann McKenzie better known as Jam who owns the Honey Creek Cafe meets Sergeant Tucson Smith and even though they didn't seem like a likely couple I think they surprised themselves and fell in love. The third couple is an example of young love. Melody and Mike know how they feel and nothing can change that. Then there's McCoy Mason and the local veterinarian Baylor Branton. Talk about fighting the pull...

I really enjoyed this book. The storyline flowed well and the characters are very likable. The relationship development of the couples was realistic. This is an interesting, well-paced book.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Honey Creek Texas, where love was in bloom from an older couple, Mr. Winston and Miss Lily....the Sargent and Honey Creeks Inn owner Jessica Ann Mackenzie.....the new Army recruit and the nearly 18year old Melody.
Old relationships were rekindled and family ties became firmer.

A charming story of love in all the places around town.

I am a fan of Jodi Thomas. She brings a sweet charm to her books like Robyn Carr. This newest book is no different. I really enjoyed all of the characters in this book. Although, I have to admit that my favorite couple is Charles and Lilly. Charles may have experience that Lilly does not but that does not mean that Charles loves Lilly any less. In fact, he is very patient with her.

On the other spectrum of couples, you have the youngest couple with Melody and Mike. They took their friendship to the next level as girlfriend and boyfriend. Their first kiss was sweet. Plus, how can you not fall in love with someone when Mike says this to Melody as he leaves for college..."Be happy every day while I'm gone because every day will be one day closer to when I come home."

This book had a bit of mystery as well. Yet, the people of Honey Creek come together to solve the mystery. If you are a first-time reader to this author, you will want to check out this book and the rest of the books in this series. Sunday at the Sunflower Inn is the perfect book to pack in your spring/summer bag!

This book was hard to stay concentrated with all the different people and stories

JAM who owns the cafe and dreams of one day owning an inn
Sgt.Tuscon who shows up ashore and Jam finds him he falls in love with her
Pecos the new sheriff in town who is Tuscon brother
Pop who owns a farm and refuses to sell to anyone
McCoy is pops grandson who lost his car, fiancée and job with all in a day
Mr. Winston the lonely old man who is in love with his Lilly
Lilly is a lonely old lady who is in love with Mr. Winston
Melody who is about to turn 18 and is head over heels with an older man
Michael who is a soldier who is in love with melody
Baylor who is a vet who is in love with Mc Coy

This is a tale of different people in the small town of Honey Creek. A slew of pictures shows up on the sheriff's desk and they assign sgt Tuson to the case where he falls more and more in love with jam who owns the cafe in town where everyone eats at. Melody is a few months from 18 and thinks she is grown. She secretly has a boyfriend who she runs away to find. McCoy wrecks his car and busts up his leg and the same day his fiancé leaves him. His dad tells him of his grandpa who lives in honey creek and that he would have a place to stay. He goes and helps fix up pops house and farm. Who was the body on the beach they saw? Will Melody ever get to see her boyfriend again? What lies in the future for Jam and her desires to build a inn? Will Baylor and McCoy ever be a item? I wish I would have read the series in order, this was a book i borrowed while i was in the hospital so I had no clue it had a series, but it was a good book but love stories are just not my mojo.

A perfect example of contentment is spending a few hours devouring the latest Jodi Thomas book. This story is easy and comforting to read. Four couples come together in the most perfect little town: a young girl and a young soldier; a seasoned soldier and a lonely cafe owner; a down on his luck contractor and a no,frills vet; and finally can older couple who somehow let love pass them by.
The funniest scene is the skinny dipping off the dock; it’s vividly described. Poor Pecos is about to come undone during his first week as sheriff. His older brother Tucson is there to assist
If you don’t fall in love with Thomas’ stories, then there’s something missing from your life..
Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for the early read.

Jodi Thomas never fails me when she writes a new Honey Creek novel. This series has become so dear to my heart. With a town full of lovely people, it's picturesque qualities, and romantic settings, Honey Creek is a place one could easily call home. Every character and their stories brought something special to the story. Jam and Tucson both so lonely, but not knowing just how vital each would be to the other. Mel and Mike..two young lovers just wanting to have their chance. McCoy's journey to his grandfather he had never known only to realize he would fight tooth and nail to help the old man ward off intruders. Winston and Lilly taking a chance on love when they are so up in age. Both wanting to find something special before time is up. Jodi Thomas brings so much life and uniqueness to each storyline all the while managing to blend them together so seamlessly. I don't see how any reader could not fall in love with this series, it's town, or it's people.

Jodi Thomas writes stories that always rights stories that get you right in all the feels. This book tells four intertwined stories about couples all at different stages in their lives - in the very small town of Honey Creek Texas.

The storyline I liked the most of all - was the one involving McCoy Mason and his grandfather. McCoy is a successful contractor - who just lost his job, his fiancé, and pretty much everything he has in the space a few weeks after a bad accident that almost killed him. When he decides to try his luck with the grandfather he's never met - he lands in Honey Creek. I loved the relationship between McCoy and his grandfather - and the town. I think his feelings experiences were extremely relatable. He really needed a hand-up and some people to care about him - and the town and his grandfather really came through.

All the stories being told in the book work so well together and wove into something I truly enjoyed. I also think you can 100% listen to Jason Aldean's Small Town Small song - and see the town and people of Honey Creek represented.

Overall - I liked it and this is definitely the feel-good book you need to lift your spirits right now!

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.

Sunday at the Sunflower Inn by Jodi Thomas

What is better than a wonderful small-town romance? Exactly what happened in this book…more than one romance happening in that wonderful small town!

What I liked:
* The return to Honey Creek…the wonderful small town with romances happening
* The couples that found their HEA-HFN
* McCoy Mason: builder, loner, injured, just out of the hospital, rootless, in Honey Creek to heal with his crusty distant grandfather
* Sadler Mason: McCoy’s grandfather, owner of historical property, under pressure from big business to sell, a quiet man deeper than he appears
* John Mason: McCoy’s father…would like to get to know him better
* Melody Avenida: seventeen, in love, has controlling parents, in love with Mike
* Michael Alderton: Army Private, foster system graduate, loves Melody
* Jessica Ann Mackenzie – Jam – café owner, single, has dreams with roots in Honey Creek
* Tucson Smith – Army Sergeant, career military, CID officer, travels the world, big and a bit abrasive with a soft center – for Jam.
* Mr. Winston: so nice to catch up with this warm, generous, caring man and watching his journey with Miss Lilly
* Seeing how Pecos and his family are doing
* The “murder” mystery
* The Mason family history and learning why the land is so important to them
* The fairy girls and their story
* Doc Baylor Blanton: veterinarian, kind, loves animals, might have an interest in a cowboy that is not a cowboy
* Roberto and his cousin, Leo, that helped McCoy out in the beginning of the book
* That the story was believable, drew me in, made me care, and fall in love with the characters
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Everything I was meant not to like…won’t list the people or events but there were a few
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington-Zebra for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Let's talk awkward:
How about
1. When you keep running into someone and you have reached that point when you can no longer as them their name because you forgot it

2. When you are a kid and mommy leaves to get one more thing at the grocery store and hasn't returned and there is a long line waiting....

3.Clogging the toilet at someone's house

4. Your grandparents not hanging up the phone and you overhearing a private conversation........

5. Reading Sunday at the Sunflower Inn

-----> Yes this book makes the top 5 most uncomfortable situations. I am not sure if it was more awkward or cheesy or just straight up perverted. This woman Jodi Thomas only thinks of sex and sexual inuendos.
There was absolutely no character development and all the romance is instant. For instance characters meet and immediately jump into bed and cannot fathom a second apart. To make matters worse you have to read horrible lines I wish I could recall some of them but Oh they were so terrible.
The mystery thread in this book was SO predictable an how it ended up just made me realize It was available to purchase at the grocery store. This is the type of book you buy on your way down to Myrtle Beach at South of the Border.
There are some things I can guarantee you about reading this:
1. You will pick up no new vocabulary words as it reads at a 4th grade level (note the words, the actual content is so for 18+ ONLY)
2. You will never look at your grandparents again the same way in fear that they may resemble Winston and Lilly
3. You will want to burn this book

I cannot even recommend this book as a Its so bad its good....it is just so raunchy (in a non explicit way...) Make it stop! Excuse me while I go bathe....I feel like I need to go read a piece of literature just to get my readers card back.

One last nugget....the names?
JAM
Pacos
Tuscon
McCoy
--PUH--LEASE

No just no!

**I did have a super fun time Buddy reading this with my mommy**

They say things are bigger in Texas, but they’re also more outrageous, more humorous, more poignant, and more heartfelt. As only Jodi Thomas can do, she weaves together an unforgettable tale of family, community, redemption, and new beginnings.

Three generations of stoic, grumpy, men find each other again, reunited over the rocky land they’re determined to protect. A group of seniors go wild, their antics inspired by two friends who never married but have decided to get engaged in their twilight years. A runaway girl hides out in the haunted Honey Creek Café as she searches for her lost love. A career soldier who thrives on seeing the world is inexplicably drawn to a café owner with deep roots who causes him to rethink his life.

Reading a Jodi Thomas book is like a long, lazy afternoon, floating down the calm river while the cool water tickles your fingertips and the warm sun kisses your face. No pressure and low angst with an invigorating rocky ripple or two, and by the end, your soul is renewed and your heart satisfied. With this quintessential queen of wholesome romance you'll escape to a world you'll wish were real and want to stay there forever.

These authentic, endearing characters will quietly make a place for themselves in your heart where you’ll cherish their experiences and life lessons long after the last page. Their charming stories will make your soul sing and your heart happy sigh, so make sure you don’t miss this delightfully sweet, poignantly touching, masterfully crafted, unparalleled read!
