Lord Peyton Danforth—he of the charming smile, cheerful disposition, and hidden resentment of his brother, the Duke of Taviston—appears to live the exhilarating life of a rake. However, his lifelong pursuit of owning his own estate and escaping the long shadow of his brother is drastically altered when he saves a damsel in distress, and then impulsively proposes marriage to her.

Lady Tessa Colvin—she of the incomparable looks, headstrong nature, and ruined reputation—has been sorely tried by the men of her world. After being long ignored by her father, kidnapped by ruffians, and threatened by her ex-fiancé, she’s only too willing to escape into marriage with the seemingly heroic Lord Peyton.

Alas, neither of them is quite what the other thought.

Bound together in wedded misery, this desperate and lonely pair must somehow learn to trust one another enough to combat continued attacks by Tessa’s former fiancé, withstand estrangement from their families, and embrace the love that springs up between them.

Charlotte Russell didn’t always know she wanted to be a writer. At one point she had grand plans to be an architect, until she realized she couldn’t draw anything more complicated than a stick figure. So, she enrolled at the University of Notre Dame and studied her first love—history. Now she puts all that historical knowledge to good use by writing romances set in Regency England. When not pounding on the keyboard or tending to one husband, two cats, and three children, she is privileged to serve the people of her community at the local library. She’s resided in numerous locales, including Indiana, Mexico City, Phoenix and Seattle but currently calls the heartland of the USA home.

A lot of prideful assumptions, miscommunication, withheld Information, and imprudent actions. But improved in the end, with Tessa being truly the heroine, and many relationships changed for the better.

Full of danger and drama!
Lady Theresa (Tessa) Colvin has serious problems and it will take all of her will to overcome them. Serious danger if something she will encounter but the danger is not just to herself. Peyton Danforth is a young man who is tired of living under his brother's shadow. The brothers love that was clear from chapter one yet they did not understand each other. This book is full of twists and they are super good and the drama for both main characters if off the chart excellent. I could not put the book done I highly recommend this book!

I loved this novel about Tessa and Peynton, two people ostracized by the ton for no good reason at all. They are both likeable, strong and with a soft heart - especially when it comes to family. There is more than one villain in this book - and not all of them are readily visible at first. So there are quite a few very entertaining twists and turns! A great book with humour, heat, suspense and romance, thoroughly enjoyable from the first to the last page.

Character Potential Squandered

[There will be spoilers!]

This book started with such potential, but it was just squandered. The hero and heroine appeared sympathetic in their first scenes, but soon, both characters became unlikable, her more so than him. The big problem with this book is that it had too many secrets between the couple for too long—in fact, they kept building—causing many misunderstandings that could have simply been avoided if they had talked with and trusted each other. I don't like it when a romantic plot goes so off the rails over simple misunderstandings that snowball. And the heroine was particularly dramatic. She could go from zero to fury in 1.5 seconds! She mentally complains about the hero's dishonesty when she has been dishonest with him. Grrr! Seriously, talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Though everyone, seemingly, lambasted the hero for his immaturity, I actually felt bad for him! He was good and kind-hearted, but nobody seemed to appreciate him. I actually kept reading this book for a few days because I did honestly like the hero (and hoped the heroine would smarten up!), but when the uber-villain of the story falsified the gambling debts of the hero for the villain’s benefit, and the hero went along with it—though it meant giving up on his dream he’d been working on for a year—despite the heroine's protestations, I completely gave up on the book. I’m sure things turned around, but all the cliches and misunderstandings frustrated me so I just could not go on.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Society lauded Lady Tessa Colvin as beautiful and accomplished, but she is dismissed as empty headed by her father and her betrothed, the Earl of Lytham.
When she challenges Lytham to set a wedding date, she could not have foreseen the tumultuous outcome.

Tessa is kidnapped at midnight from her family estate and taken to a very grim area. Fortunately, she is rescued by Lord Peyton Danforth and returned home. There she faces further threats to her family and herself.

When they next meet, both are embroiled in separate scandals. Suddenly, Society is very judgemental indeed.

Peyton is a second son and resents it. He loves his elder brother, the Duke but can’t bear his disapproving attitude. Peyton likes to provoke the Duke by developing an (unfounded) reputation as a rake and a scoundrel.

By marrying Tessa, he will save her from scandal while aggravating his big brother.

Unfortunately, the Earl of Lytham won’t leave them alone and is becoming increasingly unhinged.

So follows a tale of peril, spying, treachery, lust and eventually, love.

Finding Each Other . . .

Lord Peyton Danforth is a second son and tired of living in his brother’s shadow. He both loves yet resents his brother, the Duke of Taviston, so rebels by pretending to live the life of a rake. He truly would like to own an estate, marry, and settle down. The opportunity comes when he rescues Lady Tessa Colvin from an issue with the unbalanced Earl of Lytham when she breaks their engagement. To spare her from ruin and the ton’s wrath, he proposes to her.

Lady Tessa Colvin has not had an easy time of it. Her father has been horrible, she was kidnapped from her garden by two men before being rescued by Lord Peyton, and her ex-fiance will not leave her alone, wanting revenge for her not tolerating him. So Lord Peyton’s offer gives her a means of getting out from under all of that… she thinks. But continually harassed by her ex-fiance and suffering hostility from their families, they have only each other to get through this. Can they trust in their love and find a HEA despite the disruption to their lives?

I love her books and His Duchess was a great Cinderella story.

However, this book was heart-wrenching. I had a hard time with it. The characters were so downtrodden that it was hard to get through. Neither had a lot of confidence in themselves - their love, their family, or the conflict that brought them together.

Lord Peyton, eager to separate himself from his brother the Duke of Taviston, refuses to clear up some misunderstandings. He rescues Lady Tessa first from kidnappers and then by marrying her after she creates a scandal in the ton by breaking her engagement to a villainous earl. There were almost too many misunderstandings and I think that's what made the book so depressing. Both characters were so lovely and to have them hated by everyone the entire book was terrible and too much.

That's just my personal opinion. The story overall was well told and I am really looking forward to James and Amelia's.

Loved it! This story takes off at a fast clip from the get-go and keeps it up until the very end. There is action, emotion, deceit, danger, childhood trauma, treason and steam. Tessa meets Peyton under dangerous and usual circumstances. At their next meeting, he asks her to marry him. Things do not go smoothly, and a villian is determined to get his revenge on both Tessa and Payton. This book includes everything from kidnapping to elopement, with a little forgery thrown in for good measure. The characters leap off the page; engage your emotions and leave a lasting impression. This is so good…don’t miss it!

Enjoyable. Very well-written, engaging characters, and plenty of steam n feelz. And despite the title, there weren’t any explicit details at all on the hero’s past, which I love. The only reason I’m not giving 5 stars is that the ending felt rushed. There was no epilogue and no babies and that always leaves me feeling cheated in a romance.

Safe-ish. Hero’s past isn’t mentioned, except to say he used to be a rake. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to her hero. OM drama. Heroine is engaged to another man, but no intimacy occurs between them. Heroine is also attacked by OM and attempted rape on page, there are also scenes of kidnapping and violence. No ow, no cheating or sharing or abuse between MCs.

Lady Tessa has been betrothed by her father to a man she does not like so when she gets kidnapped she is rescued by Lord Peyton who is a second son and no matter what he does he can not get his older brother's approval so he acts out in negitave ways. They both have been the talk of London and the more time they spend together the more attraction they feel. Loved this well written book with great characters and the cover is gorgeous.

This is the second story in the "His and Hers" series. It is a stand alone Regency romance about Tessa and Peyton. The story is interesting and nicely developed with some wonderful characters. She has been faced by some serious danger and overlooked by the men in her life. Peyton is tired of living in the shadows of his brother. These only pair start with a marriage of convenience that eventually turns into so much more. That is if they survive everything thrown their way.

Second in the series about the Taviscom family. A lot of excitement to keep you enthralled and interested. Payton is the second son who must always meet his older brothers expectations and failing (so he thought). While helping younger brother James he helps a lady in distress but leaves James. Payton keeps trying to-do right, but seems to do everything all wrong even though he falls in love with his wife and she him they have a hard time getting together.

This story is a well written story, which does get you evolved. It has a mixture of everything. It was not my favorite story by this author, it was a little depressing to me. Normally I enjoy books which makes me happy. But if you are not like me I know you will enjoy the story, and the writing of this author.

Her Rake

I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next book in this series. The characters are interesting and engaging. I found Tessa a little off putting at times. I know the author was trying to show the injustices of how women were treated during that time period, but sometimes Tessa came across ungrateful.

Tessa and Payten were 2 of a kind..

This was a good book enjoyed it. That mad man Lythem made it that much more interesting. But I like that the Duke Tavington and his wife Victoria was a part of book 2. Even Author made an appearance. 🙂 Good read! 💖

Second son’s life is precarious!

Peyton and brother have never agreed and things get worse when he’s a mission with younger brother. And when Tessa is kidnapped, and there lives cross lanes, life gets interesting! Very exciting story!
