For many years, Doggett Farm has looked empty and abandoned from the outside. Everyone in the area knows, however, that one person still lives there...Five years ago, Hannah Doggett's father went on a rampage with a chainsaw. He killed Hannah's mother and sister, and he would have killed Hannah too if she hadn't managed to defend herself at the last moment. Now horribly scarred, Hannah Doggett is said to live a reclusive life on the farm, never venturing out and never meeting anyone.Until today.Lured onto the property by a chance to steal some scrap metal, three local men are about to discover the horrific truth about the farm. Convinced that Hannah's watching their every move, they nevertheless dare one another to go closer and closer to the farmhouse itself, until a fateful accident leaves them trapped inside. That's when they start hearing strange noises, and they soon discover that Hannah has kept a few reminders of her ordeal. But that's not all, because Hannah – and Doggett Farm – would seem to be hiding an even more horrifying secret.Bait is the first in a series of books about the terrible forces that lurk on a remote English farm. Hannah Doggett isn't the first person whose family died in the farmhouse, but is more blood about to spill?
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
A "possessed" chainsaw? This story, with its typos and the mixing up of characters ' names, was a bit of a mess. Editing problems notwithstanding, this was a mishmash of a story seemingly thrown together without much thought to the characters and plotline. I usually score Amy Cross stories 4 or even 5 stars but, this one was a bit of a turkey.
I really enjoyed reading my first book from Amy Cross. From the beginning I was completely into the book. It was easy to read, had quite a bit blood and gore, and it was very suspenseful. I kept thinking I was there and something was going to jump out at me, which I love in a horror story. The ending was totally unexpected, and I will definitely be reading more from Amy Cross!
Did not finish. Took FOREVER to get into the story, literally read 17 chapters and 104 pages and am still absolutely bored to death. Too many mistakes such as mixing up characters names, I mean a little proof read and that wouldn't have been a problem but a ridiculous thing to make mistakes over. I gave up. My time is too precious and I won't be wasting any more on this. Sorry, not sorry.
I read this book because it was written by Amy Cross. Although I always end up loving her stories , I was sure this book was about vampires. The plot twists are great and definitely not vampires. A very creepy story, one that’ll stick in my mind for a long time! I can’t wait to read the next !
I am an avid fan of Amy Cross and have enjoyed many an evening curled up with one of her books but I found 'Bait' unfulfilling and on a couple of occasions felt myself wanting to put it down. But I carried on regardless. The first third of the book was literally all talk, no action, no thrills just talk. I also found certain parts of this 'talking' reiterated over and over again. Perhaps trying to pack the words in. When Amy continues with the story, it does get a little better but all in all I have to say I would not recommend to my friends. I know Amy Cross can write excellent books so I do look forward to reading another one very soon.
Really I tried. I usually love what this author makes, so I actually bought 2 of the books in the series without even thinking twice. Yeah... Who wants a kindlebook?
I don't even recall why I found it so terribly boring - and that in it self tells me something about it, I mean I have no clue what it was about besides two crimminals discussing whatever, tiles I think? or maybe that was another book. *sigh
Seriously, this author is so good! this book is however not, and I am not even going to deal with the sequel unless the world ends and the world run out of other books to read. (well not true, cause there are worse books than this - by far!) I guess I am just super diappointed.
Mac Doggett moved his family from the City (London) to the country Mud Flats. He, his wife and two daughters were going to live close to nature. Grow their own food, instead of getting plastic containers at the super-mart. Mac figured it would be a great new start for his family. Getting away from all the over crowding and foul air. He just couldn't believe his good fortune. If it wasn't for the tragedy that happened to the last family he never would have been able to afford the farm. As they were unloading the car he dropped the hint that there was something unsavory attached to the previous owners. But their bad luck was his great fortune. His wife asked him to explain what the big secret was. He told her the previous man ran amuck and killed his entire family and then took his life. The chainsaw he used was sitting on the table when they moved in. His wife demanded he move the saw out into the barn and lock it in the cabinet so the girls would not be hurt. Mac's daughter Hannah used to stand at her window at night and just gauze across the fields until she got sleepy. Lately after the family had retired she would see her father leave the house and go into the barn. Where he would spend most of the night. Also, Hannah noticed a drastic change in her father's moods. What could be causing the change? Received this book free in exchange for a review-I enjoyed the book but I felt it was too predictable.
This book is about a group of boys who break into a farm where a massacre happened and then horrific things start happening. I liked this book. The horror was good and I found the book intriguing. I really liked the ending and am eager to see where this story goes next as I know there are sequels. The characters are not the nicest people and I did struggle a little bit at the start with rooting for them. I also would not say I enjoyed it as much as other books I've read by this author or other horror I've read. There were also some slight pacing issues and this book could have gone another round with an editor though I understand that that is not always easy to do in self-publishing. I still liked this book though and I will be reading the sequels!
I don't usually post when I don't finish a book but, ehh, something just struck me as off about it. The first chapter is clearly meant to be horrifying. Yet, I couldn't connect or get into it at all. There was no terror or immediate 'omg what!?' Like I've found with other horror books that start a similar way. There's quite a few repeated sentences and words, which happens! But when it's every other line or so, it just makes it feel a bit flat to read.
I've read other books by Amy & really enjoyed them! I know she can do suspense! But this one just felt... disconnected? I guess that's the word I'd use. Hence the solo star.
This was an intriguing and horrible story about something that happened in the past but affected the present. I can't say I liked any of the characters but I did like the twist at the end.
Well-written except for the American feel - British people would not say some of those things in that tone, and it's torch, not flashlight. There were also a couple of name mistakes. However, overall, I enjoyed the plot.
Needs a proof read. When reading about a character falling through the hatch, his name is changed to another character! This error occurred a few times, which meant going back over the whole para to re-read . Otherwise, great story.
This was the best book I've read in a long time! Typically a Steven King and Dean Koontz fan. This book was exciting and intriguing from the very beginning! Thank goodness there's another book to keep me enthralled!
Another wild story, how they all thought Hannah was still in the house, heck I thought she was still there, all that time is was critters. The book kept me on the edge of my seat.
The story is good and interesting, but I can't get by all the written errors, misspelled words and characters. Twice I had to go back and check the character. It's a shame all those errors. Good story though if you can get by all errors.
It kept my interest to the very end. The ending left me eagerly waiting for the 2nd book in the series. The story was well written and made it hard to put down. I highly recommend this book and any of Amy Crosses books.
There were some spelling errors, and there seems to always be at least on in every Amy Cross book. You'd think they would at least comb through one last time. It makes the writing seem a bit less professional in my opinion.
Another amazing book by the author Amy cross, as You read bait you get drawn in to words and the story and what you think is happening you will be surprised, the detail and style of.writing is amazing .. I love horror stories and Amy Cross is definitely one of my favourite authors
Such a great book about a family murder and the rumours of the surviving daughter living at the house like a recluse. Local youngsters venture into the property where things go away. Intense and well written. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
I was going to give this a bad review until I read the ending of the book and it makes more sense . it was some what of a slow burn , and I often found my self irritated how it toyed with getting to the point . in the end I decided to give it three stars.
This was a good read. Excellent story-telling. Easy to read with not a lot of minutae. Characters are well developed. Full of mystery, horror, and unpredictability makes for a good book horror fans will enjoy.
Not my favorite Any Cross book. Typos, character mixups, and not as interesting as I had hoped. And there’s two more books in this series? I think not.
Three books in this series. Read 1 &2, third one coming out next week. I cannot wait. How amy cross draws me into the story is amazing. They scare me and i love it
