Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
The story is pretty solid for a first issue. And the art, which is what bumped it up to a full 4 stars for me, was lovely to look at. The biggest complaint I have is Snyder's tendency to turn his comics into prose novels as he crams as many words as he can onto the page.
The gist of this one is that a young woman finds out that demons are real and that her estranged father was the best hunter they had. Now the role of demon slayer has passed on to her. Dun, dun, dun...
I'm definitely interested enough to continue with this one. Also, the first few issues are (as of now) free on Prime Reading, so if you have a Prime account on Amazon, you should check this out.
ComiXology Originals X Scott Snyder is the REAL DEAL! Not just this series in particular, but all the three titles released so far are so well crafted: the theme, the writing, the illustrations, the colouring- OMG - everything is GORGEOUS!
We Have Demons #1 is one of the best first issues I've read till date. Even though it's another demon slaying adventure, the narrative is fresh and entertaining. I truly enjoyed it and I might as well get some prints of it for my room. :D
Lam and her father were inseparable. Despite him chopping her arm off when she was a child after being bitten by a poisonous snake, she never held any form of animosity towards him. She knew she was loved. She knew her dad was godfolk. She knew she was safe. Until she grew up. And her life wasn't so filled with love and safety or god as she thought. Her father had been taking mysterious trips for work, coming home covered in blood, and never answering her questions and a wedge was placed between them. And then he dies. And she's not there. When she comes home from the funeral, her step mum tells her everything her dad preached about, heaven, hell, demons, light, god, all of it was true and her dad was part of an elite force called The Glories who hunted demons disguised as humans. And now it's up to her to continue his dying work.
She of course, thinks it's rubbish when she has to kill their neighbours. Until they turn into demons and try to kill her.
I really liked this book. The writing was good, it was funny, and the art was out of this world. Overall, I really enjoyed this and I'm looking forward to issue 2.
Whoa this was a pretty great first issue. Great art, solid dialogue, a very intriguing plot that's got me thinking we're going to get into some dark shit. This series is also pretty funny (The meme of the guy talking to the girl in a bar? Priceless) Overall, very solid first issue.
I was disappointed, to be honest. I guess I expected straight up horror, blood & guts, you know, that sort of thing. I might read the second issue of this, but I don't see this being something that I'll stick with. It's a bit too fantasy-coded for my taste.
Zdaleka nejvíc propagovaná a vyhajpovaná věc z Best Jackett imprintu a zatím nejslabší. To ale neznamená, že je špatná. Clear a hlavně Night of the Ghoul jsou prostě zatraceně dobrý.
We Have Demons je hodně klasickej Snyder posledních let. Hodně to hraje na efekt. Všechno je krutopřísný a strašně hustý. Popravdě mi to ani nějak extra nevadí, protože to plní účel, kterej má.
Nebaví mě to tu.
We Have Demons nejsou žádná bída, jenom je mrzutý, jak člověk cejtí o kolik by to mohlo bejt lepší s dobře zvolenym umělcem.
As an adult comic book reader I have enjoyed the offering. I appreciate the creativity by the artists involved, I hope that the team involved in these productions have every success in future additions.👍😁
Short review: Snyder says he wanted a good time, 90's action feel, almost one we aren't supposed to take serious and just enjoy the ride. By his unintentional theology, I fear more impressionable minds will become a cult following for a Halo versus Horn religion. Not truly, but as horror cultures go. I am intrigued with the elements of this story, the science, the god talk, the warriors of the apocalypse. As someone who has read much into scripture context, the Bible, loves reading sword-and-sorcery, grew up on 80s/90s horrors, I don't find the biblical representation even remotely true. I'll go into the second issue, excited about the action and characters, but the false gods may turn me off down the road dependent upon Snyder's sermons to the comic masses.
Longer review: I have a morbid curiosity with the dark and macabre. Not with cults and devil worshipping but with the evil that is at odds with Good. With actual demons that battle angels and the devils that seek to pervert God's creation.
Capullo, Glapion, and McCaig have given us some good art and colors. I'm not sure where Snyder is wanting to take the faith and fall of his story as he does have moments of leaning into creation beliefs and the Garden of Eden as nothing more than myth, with rhetoric that promotes other myths as black-and-white truths, like Big Bang, Pangaea, and evolution. He quotes the bible at some points, uses the spiritual idea of archaic angels and demons battling, refers to good people as Godfolks, starts a creation story for the nephilim, but does not come off as someone who has actually engaged scripture and faith in God. There's more of an interest in the loosely mentioned nephilim than there is in the often mentioned God. There's a focus on a simple science versus the deeply intertwined studies of God and earth. I'm thinking God will be a myth by the end, and that life as we know it will be a result of the chaos between Halo and Horn, the two furthest extremes of elements, opposites of each other.
There's a feeling here that science and faith contradict each other but I don't know many people who don't enjoy both together, and have even used science to deny faith only to become a believer themselves.
Also in Snyder's story, it quickly feels like a generational critique, of old beliefs versus modern truths, though that usually is a fallacy of every generation believing life/truth didn't start until their arrival, though many amazing human feats were accomplished in the past, with the advancement of medicine, science, and technology happening more profoundly in the past, right alongside faith. On this, Lam Cullen may very well end up quite an interesting character in her own right but I think the prospect of having Cashel Cullen's story be a focal point was a lost opportunity for being more endearing, especially with Lam being a perceivably fluidly sexual and angry young woman. Cash was apparently more level-headed, learned, and faithful to the Good fight.
Theology is the study of God. Science is the study of God's creation. Honestly, questioning the mysteries of God and earth, demons battling angels, Halo and Horn (light and dark) elements effecting mankind, are all very intriguing story points. It's the subtle, and at times outright, vehemence against all things God that worries me about Snyder's story in the end. Faith definitely seems to have made the writing queasy, to play off of his own words.
Let there be light..and the big bang created everything.
Not a bad start to a series and I found the trigger warning amusing considering what they are warning you about is not typical of many people (though extreme belief in anything can be scary as heck no matter how nice people seem to be.) With that said before reading this book you can expect profanity, blood splatter, an amputation of a child's arm (though it is shown in a much darker scene so not as graphic), science, and grotesque demonic beings (tentacles and all.) Then there is faith which we were warned about at the beginning of the book for humanity only has so much of what they need to defeat the demons and they seem to always bring more to the party so it is your typical End of Humanity type story so might as well have a little faith to take as many evil entities as our heroes can before the end times.
The legend is a thousand blades were forged and given to warriors across the land, and in time, the demon species were destroyed. Over the centuries, these blades have been passed down to warriors of every faith. Often the source of legends around mystical swords, axes, spears, they've been used to beat back resurgences of Horn.
When a new Scott Snyder series drops I tend to sit up and listen.
This series is another ComiXology original and is being released exclusively by Amazon (who recently took over ComiXology).
This first issue is all about setting the scene. Ancient forces of Good and Evil. Demons that need slaying by a select band of Demon Hunters. A young girl whose father hid his true calling until his untimely death throws her into the deep end. Oh. and a side kick called Gus, who I can tell is going to be a fascinating part of the story.
A perfect start and a 5 stars. Tomorrow I shall be delving into issue 2.
Scott Snyder + Greg Capullo = 🤌🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 We Have Demons is the first graphic novel in a series of the classic fight between good and evil. This time the fight is literally. There is literally a good and evil element and the balance is shifting. After the untimely death of her father, our protagonist-Lam, learns about the truth of her father. He hunted demons with a secret crew including a changed demon named Gus. In this introduction of the series, Lam has to find the best place to put her faith and build her own power to continue the legacy her father placed before her. Blast, I just love everything about this book. It's so amazing to step into such a well thought out story and illustrations that pair so perfectly. I'm an easy sell with the duo of Capullo and Snyder. I really love the subtle themes underneath it all, the thoughtful look at humanity and the future we build for ourselves. Absolute perfection.
The art in this gory graphic novel is fantastic. The story is kind of weird, like it’s about faith and demons, but then it makes it more like science fiction where there are asteroids of “horn” that make people demonic and asteroids of “halo” elements that make people good, but then it’s also vaguely—not Christian per se—but spiritual? And superhero-ish. The story telling, especially how the plot is laid out, was quite interesting in the beginning but got a bit action-schlocky towards the end. Not really for me, but interesting.
This is Scott Snyder at his best, doing horror comics and having self imposed boundaries that prevent the stories becoming farcical (which often occurred with his DC comics). This is a nice intro into a demon Hunter tale and from this introduction reminds me of a mix of "buffy" and "clean room". Special mention also has to go to Greg capullo, whose cartoon style works really well when switching to horror and whose sense of storytelling is impeccable.
My ratings of books on Goodreads are solely a crude ranking of their utility to me, and not an evaluation of literary merit, entertainment value, social importance, humor, insightfulness, scientific accuracy, creative vigor, suspensefulness of plot, depth of characters, vitality of theme, excitement of climax, satisfaction of ending, or any other combination of dimensions of value which we are expected to boil down through some fabulous alchemy into a single digit.
The combination of Scott Snyder and Comixilogy originals just keep churning out some lovely yarns. Another blockbuster horror story warming up. The story based on the perennial fight between good and evil with a teenager discovering the dark world of demons and more and her family inheritance as a demon slayer. The art is fantastic and the demons are superb. Looking forward to more mayhem in the subsequent issues.
Fairly basic demon hunter family history revealed story. Kind of wanted more out of it. But I liked it enough to seek out the next issues. Best part was probably the reveal of father's partner. And I suppose the central scene of the living room tension was cute.
Interesting point to end the issue on. Felt a bit cheesy though?
When you go in blind, like I did with this title, it’s a nice surprise sometimes. Demon hunter, magical creatures, one hand is a weapon— these are not *completely* new elements to stories, but there are very few things that can be new nowadays.
I’m looking forward to what this story holds. Redemption, I’m sure, is down the line. The art is great as is the humor.
This was in my kindle prime have a look at me, suggestions and I love this kind of thing so I thought why not. Loved it. Reading more now. Back later! Ps the art work is great and I love the lore/science/religious/evolutionary roots. Helps it feel more believable to speak. Anyway gotta go, book 2 to read!!
Comixology freebie. Suitable for teens and adults, occultism and profanity in both word and deed. Good color artwork, a little gory. A young girl joins the never ending battle between good and evil.
I liked the graphics they are quite good. But I must admit I can't follow the story line. I am sure there are many readers out that can follow the story better.
Great art and colours and a really eerie story! Reminded me of Buffy the Vampire slayer and Evil Dead mixed together. Some great characters and scenes in this book. Well worth a read.
A decent start to what looks like it could be a fun series. Greg Capullo's artwork is the main draw here and he absolutely doesn't disappoint, delivering another visual feast for the eyes. The story and characters by Scott Snyder are interesting and I'm excited to see where this one goes.
I loved this first issue. It’s no secret that Scott Snyder is my favorite. I just like the way he tells stories. And this is no exception. It was a solid first issue and can’t wait to read the next one. I also love Greg Capullo. I love his line work so so so much.
This is the most coolest chapter I’ve ever read! It has everything I could want in a story: great characters, great humor, great drama, and monsters! I recommend this story to anyone who is a fan of Spider-Man for the humor and Hellboy and Spawn for the monsters.
