Rate this book
From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Robert Bailey comes a compelling legal thriller about a lawyer who takes on his sister’s case―and confronts small-town secrets and family skeletons. Attorney Jason Rich has made a fortune off other people’s bad luck. His billboard slogan―“In an accident? Get Rich!”―accosts motorists on highways from Alabama to Florida. As ambulance chasers go, he’s exceptional. But after a recent divorce and a stint in rehab, Jason has hit a rough patch. And things only get worse when his sister, Jana, is accused of her husband’s murder. Even though Jason has no experience trying criminal cases, Jana begs him to represent her. Jason has mixed feelings about returning to Lake Guntersville, Alabama―and even more reservations about diving back into his sister’s life. Between the drugs, the affairs, and a tendency to gaslight everyone in her inner circle, Jana has plenty of enemies in town. But did Jana hire someone to kill her husband? Jason isn’t so sure. He heads back to his hometown to unravel the truth and face off against opponents old and new.

This would make a great movie casting Tom Cruise as Jason Rich, a personal injury lawyer. This legal thriller has dynamic view points and evidence when Dr. Braxton Waters is shot to death. His wife has been charged with hiring someone to kill him. His wife is also Jason Rich's sister Jana. He walked away from his hometown after his father died and his sister became an evil manipulative person. He left behind two of his nieces that he adored but could not stand the heat.
Jason is portrayed on billboards all across Alabama and Florida with a catchy slogan "In an accident? Get Rich!" When his sister calls him to represent her, he knows nothing about being a trial lawyer.
The evidence is stacked against her, threats from shady people that she dealt drugs from, and the whole town appears to look down on him for representing her.
Jana and her husband Dr. Braxton had several affairs with different people, so his defense for her is not a strong case. When she withdraws money from her account a day before his death, She appears guilty.
An awesome courtroom trial and an incredible twist at the end!!! Great job to the narrator Joe Knezevich on this audio! I'm sure Jason Rich #2 will be just as good!

An interesting story, great character in Jason Rich, not so great finish.

Jason Rich typically represents victims of accidents and has billboards all over town with his smiling face - 'Been in an accident? Get Rich!'. He recently had a painful divorce and has spent 3 months in rehab. His sister Jana Waters and nieces desperately try to reach him. Jana's husband Braxton was found shot and dumped in their pool. A handyman Waylon Pike after a few days confesses to the murder but says lhe was hired. Jason is not close to Jana, but feels he has to support his family. His work colleagues Izzy / Isabel Montaigne and Harry stronfly advise him not to take the case. Jana also has other troubles as she owes money to a drug dealer Tyson.

This looks like the start of an interesting series. Jason is a very loveable character with his wit, vulnerability and sense of purpose. The story is engrossing and the identity of the murderer & motive is held till the end. I personally felt the procedures and the convergence at the end could have been better.

Trouble in Alabama? Call 1-800-GET-RICH and hang on for dear life; YOUR dear life!

Robert Bailey’s new book, “Rich Blood”, is a wild ride filled with all things Alabama: football, fishing, fried food, crazy family and a legal system you won’t believe. It’s the absurd theater version of “Mississippi Burning”, by Greg Isles; not quite Dukes of Hazard but if they were related, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Broken down into 6 sections with 84 chapters and an epilogue, Bailey is the master of short attention span theater that appeals to today’s Tik Tok watching reader. For me, a more seasoned bibliophile, that aspect makes for a bumpy ride albeit easy to take a comfort break.

Bailey is also strong in developing characters and dialogue. I fully expect to find this book and sequel showing up as an Amazon Original on the Prime Video listing in the not too distant future. These folks are twisted, emotional, have huge hearts and are colorful to the point of needing warnings for language. Oh, the Alabama bar association is not going to be very happy should they get wind of the antics going on in Guntersville and the “practice” of Jason Rich, Esq.

On the other hand, readers will have a good time, foul language aside, shaking their heads at the bizarre antics, surprisingly well veiled mysteries, and the visit to friendly, small town ‘Bama. Bless your heart📚

Amazon Prime First Reads for August.

I so enjoyed Rich Blood and I'm thrilled it's going to be a series!!

Jason Rich is one of those personal injury attorneys who plaster the streets and highways with advertising billboards: "Injured in an accident? Call 1-800-GET RICH." Tacky? Yes. Effective? Also yes! Although Jason has zero criminal defense experience, he's the attorney his older sister calls when she is suspected of murdering her husband - even though he has just gotten out of rehab for alcohol abuse and is recently divorced.

I absolutely loved the way the characters developed throughout the book. The pace was fast and the courtroom scenes were nailbiters! I can't wait for Rich Waters to be finished! Well done, Mr. Bailey!

I love a good legal thriller and this was really fun. Jason Rich is a successful attorney who has a lot of personal baggage. Fresh out of rehab for alcoholism he discovers his problematic older sister has been arrested, and accused of murdering her husband. Jason, who has no experience in criminal law, has to decide if he should take her case and try and prove her innocence even with all the evidence pointing against her.

This was a great ride and the ending was pretty wild. Also looks like it’s the first of a trilogy so I’ll definitely be reading the next two!

You will think you know the ending…

You may think you know the ending to this one, and you will be wrong. I am a voracious reader and typically predict endings and the storyline. This was a great book with some serious twists. Ending was unexpected. This is a great book- flawed characters, gritty cast, and a main character you believe in. I look forward to seeing where this series goes.

4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So glad I found this audiobook series on Kindle Unlimited! It definitely keeps me entertained during my work commute.

I love legal thrillers - I’m always a sucker for courtroom drama. In this one, Jason Rich represents his sister, Jana when she is accused of paying someone to kill her husband. The story is super faced paced with a great courtroom trial and an awesome twist at the end. Kudos to the narrator too - who did an incredible job with this audio.

Looking forward to starting Book #2 today!

5.0 stars - LOVED IT! Another Amazon first reads winner. Loved this new legal thriller from an author new to me. Robert Bailey is an excellent story teller and an author I'll be following in the future. Caused me to lose a good nights sleep, couldn't put this book down once this story gets rolling.

Jason Rich, 1-800-GET RICH, a successful ambulance chasing attorney, has his mug plastered on numerous billboards across the country. Recently divorced, 1 day out of rehab and on the edge of disbarment. Jason finds frantic phone messages from his sister/Jana and her family for help. Jana, on the brink of divorce, has been arrested for the hired killing of her husband. Troubled family dynamics aside, Jason, who's in no shape to handle what's coming, reluctantly travels back to his hometown in Alabama for the sake of Jana's 2 daughters.

What follows is one crazy roller coaster of a ride with an interesting cast of characters. Jason's office support team and a possible love interest from the past along with a legal mentor are a plus. I absolutely LOVED the crazy, scary Tonidandel brothers. Then there's the wild card, a local drug lord.

Edge of your seat court room drama ensues and the pages start flying by, you never know what's going to happen next. The ending was a complete surprise.

This book releases Sept 1, 2022. Excitedly looking forward to book 2.

An introduction to Robert Bailey's new twisty legal series drama (Jason Rich #1) with RICH BLOOD —a legal thriller and murder mystery of an attorney who takes on his estranged sister's case—unraveling small-town secrets and family skeletons.

Audiobook: While I purchased the e-book and the audiobook, let me say how much I ENJOYED the audiobook and HIGHLY RECOMMEND the audio! Joe Knezevich—the narrator, was EXCELLENT! He sounds so much like Matthew McConaughey (swoon) that in the beginning, I had to look to make sure it was not Matthew, which I adore. The audio performance was very engaging across all voices, and Joe has been added to my favorite narrator list. The narrator gets 5 Stars. Book 4 Stars.

Set in the south in rural Alabama, we are introduced to a cast of highly dysfunctional Southern characters with topics of infidelity, drug and alcohol addiction, corruption, violence, manipulation, drug pins, sex, murder for hire, PTSD, secrets and lies, and more in this small rural town.

Jason Rich, is a personal injury attorney which has had much success as an ambulance chaser with tag lines: "In an accident? Get Rich!"—with billboards from Alabama to Florida. However, he is fresh out of a 90-day stint in rehab for alcohol addiction.

Jason receives a phone call desperate for help from his two nieces, Niecy and Nola that their mother, Jana (his estranged sister), has been arrested for the murder of her husband, Dr. Braxton Waters, the girl's father.

It appears both Braxton and Jana were unfaithful, and both had multiple affairs.

Jana is an evil person, and Jason wants no part of this or his sister. She is manipulative, heavily into drugs, affairs, and sex, and hangs out with drug dealers. Not a good mother, wife, sister, or friend. Jason and Jana are estranged, but he has to help his nieces.

Also, Jason knows nothing about a trial or criminal law. However, his sister has no other choice, and he agrees to take on her case after being threatened.

What he does not know is that he will have dangerous drug dealers on his trail and has to pay more than $50K for his sister's drug debts, or the drug dealer will kill his nieces. Then he finds out his sister withdrew $15K from her bank account the day before the murder.

Now they have a murderer for hire that has confessed with a deal stating Jana paid him for killing her husband. They have the $15K.

But Jason feels he has no choice but to defend her. Also a threat by local drug king Tyson Cade, who demands $50,000 she owed him for his product. Cade doesn’t want Jana to testify in her defense or does he want his name to come up in the trial, so he demands that Jason does not take the case, letting it go to a court-appointed less-motivated attorney, or if he does take the case, that he keep Jana off the stand.

Jason's life is now in danger, and his nieces. With a town of corruption, where drug lords run the town, and the local cops, plus an array of characters having sex with others' spouses, affairs, drugs, alcohol, and sins of the past of both Jana and her doctor husband, will keep your head spinning. There are plenty of red herrings and suspects.

Will Jason be able to get get a not guilty verdict for his sister?

No likable characters here (except Jason and his junior associate, which is funny), but most are evil and dangerous, and crazy. Not a lot of riveting courtroom scenes or strategic planning, but more of a mystery and drama.

Do not expect anything of the caliber of John Grisham, Scott Turow, John Hart, or John Lescroart, but a highly entertaining murder mystery for fans of the TV series Better Call Saul.

With twists and turns, the author throws out two final double twists you do not see coming, concluding the first installment while his fans wait for the next in this series.

This is my first Robert Bailey legal thriller. I’m more than halfway through and am enjoying it.

Jason Rich is one of those personal injury (PI) attorneys plastering the highways with billboards advertising his services: 1-800-GET RICH. Tacky maybe, but very effective at bringing in clients. Jason is rich and famous, but not at all respected. After all, he settles all his cases and has never spent a day trying a case in court.

When his estranged and troubled sister, Jana, is accused of murdering her husband and the case against her seems “open and shut,” will he take on her defense? He has every reason not to, including everyone’s advice against it, his lack of experience in criminal matters, his own personal demons, and plain old common sense. No reasonable, competent attorney with zero experience in court and/or with the criminal law would ever take on a capital murder case. Then again, family is family and his sister and nieces have no one else.

For me, “Rich Blood” did not start off well. The first three chapters are devoted mostly to backstory about some not very nice people involved in some very questionable situations. And the prose initially seems wordy and clunky.

But I kept going and found that the prose improves and becomes more sure-footed and that the characters grow and acquire depth. The internal and external conflicts become more interesting and the stakes higher, even urgent, as the story progresses. And Mr. Bailey does a good job with the Alabama setting. I learned things about the state I did not know.

All in all, despite something of a rocky start, this is a good entertainment that fans of authors like John Grisham and Scott Turow may very well enjoy.

The first 10% of this book was good. Then the next 40% of the book just dragged with just about nothing interesting happening. Then the second half of the book was pretty decent. So all in all it was a good book… but had more potential that wasn’t brought out.

August Amazon first read. This was quite good. The mystery was good, the ending surprising and the characters felt like real people. I went and checked to see if the next book in the series is available (2023), because I was ready to continue on with the characters. I’ll be waiting!

I absolutely enjoyed the heck out of this book! It is in no way great literature, but I had the best time reading it. I was engrossed by this story and the great ending with multiple plot twists was just icing on the proverbial cake. BUT...I fully realize a lot of my enjoyment came from the local author and local setting. I live in Huntsville, AL, and the author is a local attorney. The book is set primarily in Guntersville, AL, specifically around Lake Guntersville, which is about 30 minutes away. I felt like such a part of the story. I've eaten at every restaurant mentioned in this book, including the two in other Alabama cities, except 1 which is now closed as of the end of last year. Since he uses real places down to street names, I was able to fully visualize everything which made for an intensive reading experience. The people and stereotypes and so many other little details felt like being in on a great inside joke with a solid mystery attached. I don't think Robert Bailey covers any new ground that hasn't already been trod by John Grisham, Michael Connelly, or Ace Atkins, but I will definitely be reading more of his work in the near future.

I wanted to like this more. However, it was choppy at times, and the climax was unsatisfying. In places, it was a little "cringey." I think the book had an identity crisis. It couldn't decide between lightheartedness and seriousness. Janet Evanovich or John Grisham?

Though the mystery part of the story kept me guessing, there wasn’t enough depth for me to give this book higher than a 3 star rating. I hate to make comparisons to other authors, but if you’re looking for the next John Grisham, this is not your winner.

A murder mystery that i was sure during the first half that i will not read the next book in the series but and i am happy that i kept reading because once it picked up later, i was hooked in and i am very interested with what will happen at the second book.

Jason rich is a very well known and successful personal injury attorney, making millions at his own law company and his face on billboards was every where, but there was something missing and that feeling led him to alcoholism.

He was just discharged from rehab and about to feel of the wagon, when he switched on his phone and find his sister massages asking him for help. While his sister was awful to him throughout his life and he has no intent of helping her, he couldn’t ignore his little niece text to help them.

His drug addicted sister was accused of killing her husband and the evidence was piling up towards her, however, he felt that something was not right and he decided to take his first murder case in his life and fight hard against everything and the story starts to unfold.

The book starts with information chapters that have no soul, and then for the first part of the book it was very slow with how jason is dealing with his after-rehab process and his relationship with everyone around him, however, the second part have really picked up and linked everything was mentioned at the first part, and went deep with the emotions and with the murder case findings and hooked me up till the end of the book.

Very solid legal thriller. James Rich, a tacky billboard-attorney and an alcoholic, finds himself in the position of defending his own sister in a murder trial.

As someone who read almost everything that John Grisham ever wrote, I enjoyed this a lot. Bailey got the “authenticity feel” absolutely right, which is possibly the best feature of this novel: he writes really well, his characters feel like real people, they have a life of their own, despite the fast pace of the narration. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is that Grisham’s best novels are exciting, clever and funny at a level that “Rich blood” does not reach. Michael Connelly’s Mickey Haller legal thrillers are also superior (although Connelly is superior only in cleverness and technical skills, not in vitality and humor as well, like Grisham used to be).

There is a good amount of law (the author is an attorney) and the court drama is phenomenal, but the “legal” side of the thriller is not as preeminent as I was hoping it would be, and the plot does not really stand out for its originality.

A great read, though. I would recommend it.

I confess to wanting badly to like Robert Bailey’s books. This is especially the case because I am an attorney who hopes to be as successful as he is as an attorney and a fledgling writer who honestly hopes to merely have something published (one day). I found Bailey charming in a podcast interview, and really do with him the best.

Bailey seems to be aiming to be to Alabama what Grisham is to Mississippi. His plots are fast-paced with enough twists and intriguing characters to keep me wanting to read through the pages. The setting of his work is generally north Alabama or south Tennessee, and Bailey adeptly makes these backdrops their own characters in the stories.

I had high hopes for his latest book, Rich Blood, which has clearly been heavily marketed by the Amazon imprint Thomas & Mercer. It was good enough for me to read it to the end.

Jason Rich is a divorced 36-year-old Birmingham billboard lawyer. His penchant for flaunting the conventions of genteel Southern law practice have not ingratiated him with the Alabama State Bar. When he shows up to a deposition drunk, his life begins to unravel. We meet him as he leaves rehab and is reprimanded by the Bar.

Rich’s sister Jana is married to a prominent doctor and seems to suffer from borderline personality disorder, hypersexuality, alcoholism and cocaine and Xanax addiction. She finds herself in a steep hole with a drug kingpin, and one of the kingpin’s associates murders Jana’s husband. Jana is charged with murder-for-hire.

Jason must return to his hometown to defend his sister and confront his demons. There is a Hallmark movie quality to the plot, and it explores themes of family, redemption, addiction and regret. The dialogue could use work, and there is insufficient character development.

Our protagonist and main characters are not particularly relatable, not particularly likable and do not evolve enough for my taste. There will be a sequel (which I will of course read), so this character development could come soon enough.

Some of the writing was a little hokey- which could have been by design- and painstaking. One can’t help but wonder at several points throughout whether Bailey wasn’t enjoying himself as he wrote this book.

Bailey’s main strength is pacing, and the book clips along well enough to maintain the reader’s attention. This strength overshadows the weaknesses enough to keep this reader coming back for more.

3.5 stars. Would recommend.

Alabama rising to challenge Mississippi's Grisham

A riveting legal procedural wrapped up with the question of whether the protagonist will shake his alcoholism long enough to make a hash out of his first-ever court trial. The defendant? His sister. Torn between the bottle, a desire to do the right thing for the family however dysfunctional, and the professional knowledge that he has no business taking on such a case, Jason Rich lurches from one near-miss to the next on the way to a Grisham-like wry conclusion. You will enjoy the ride.

I received this book as part of Amazon‘s First Reads program and having read previous books by this author, I was very excited for this new one, the first in a new series. there is nothing doll about this story that takes off right from the prologue. in past years I used to read a lot of legal thrillers, then I got away from them but Robert Bailey has renewed my interest. The plot is good, the characters are original and fit the story well. The story is moved along at a good clip and I was totally engaged all the way through. there were things going on near the end that I did not see coming but made the story even better. I am very excited for this new series and can’t wait to read the second book. I flew through this one on Kindle but after hearing the rave reviews about the audiobook, I may go that route the next time. I love the main character with all of his flaws and I see a lot that can happen there, along with some of the other supporting characters. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy crime fiction and legal thrillers. It’s very good!
