It began with a feeling of unease. Two years since bringing Lorna to their village from the other side of the wall, Fliss is troubled. Lorna has replaced The Old One, the last of the protectors of the invisible but impenetrable wall between them and their enemies.

On this side is a peaceful life where all help one another, and are free. The other side of the wall is ruled ruthlessly by the Families. They are wealthy, white and powerful people who permit slavery and rule by force. The Morisette Family in particular have spent the last two years pummeling other families into the ground, keen to rule on their own.

Excitement fills the village where Fliss lives, on the news that an enigmatic and handsome stranger is coming their way. When he arrives he's beguiling, soon having the villages enraptured in his message. He preaches of peace across the land. One land, and One people. He wants the wall that divides the people to come down to enable everyone to live together in peace.

Fliss too is captivated by the good looking man who says the People (the beings that built the wall in the first place) are now speaking through him. They are telling him the wall must come down in order for all to be one. She pulls herself away from the gathering with a building mistrust of his words. Be one with the Families? The very people who used to own her as a slave and who killed her friends?

After much discussion with Lorna (the new protector of the Wall) and her friends, she knows she must return to the dangerous side of the wall to find out what is going on. Is the Truthmaker connected to the Families? If he is, what is he planning?

Fliss' journey with her best friend Minnie is fraught with danger, but they meet and make new allies, some powerful in their own right and some surprising in their skills at subterfuge. Time is running out though. Lorna is in danger which means everyone Fliss loves is in terrible peril.

The sequel to Maurice Gee's The Severed Land, this author has done an incredible job of capturing the personality and spirit of the main character Fliss. Tension is just as high as in the first book, as Fliss and her best friend Minnie look for answers where only danger lurks and also learn to trust others who could just as easily hand them to ruthless men or slavers.

The Severed Land began in a high tree as Fliss watches soldiers on the other side of an invisible and impenetrable wall. The Truthmaker winds back to the same tree as part of the heart thumping conclusion.

Maurice Gee has authorised and endorsed The Truthmaker as it picks up where The Severed Land left off. At less than 210 pages it is a quick read, but holds all the world building and excitement of many more.
