A student has a scary visage that terrifies others but is actually quite nice. You might rightly think you’ve read this before, except this time it’s Hitomi, who’s the new girl in school. Paired with the diminutive Yuu and his little sister Kaoru, Hitomi is learning to smile more. Just not well.

Oh, I had such high hopes for this. The idea of flipping the script on the terrifyingly faced student trope is really cute and not something I had seen. Yuu and Hitomi are a decent pair and their first meeting is fun (especially the revelation of where they live and who the sempai is).

Then the jokes keep repeating. And repeating. Aaaaand repeating. This series has two major things it thinks are funny - Hitomi’s facial expressions when she smiles and her breasts. So you’ll be hearing a ton about both the whole volume.

And they don’t do anything with it except the same freaking jokes every single time. Hitomi smiles and scares people and then misunderstandings happen. She has big breasts (finally, a manga that isn’t scared to draw inappropriately large boobs /sarcasm).

Kaoru is weirdly obsessed with Hitomi’s abs and I think that is a gag? But it isn’t much of one. Which is ironic because I think Kaoru is secretly the book’s best character - as Hitomi’s classmate and Yuu’s sister she has an interesting line on the proceedings.

Kaoru gets a reasonable chuckle during the soccer match, where she acts with an admirable level of impulsiveness. By far the best moment in the whole thing is when the trio watch a horror movie together. The DVD that Kaoru gives Hitomi to wash the horror out has a title that is still making me laugh at how pedantic it is.

But it’s surrounded by Hitomi getting wet and trying on Yuu’s clothing and her being called a pair of breasts by some dudebro and winning over some kids when they mash into her chest. This stuff was old before it was in this book and even if the core relationship promises to be quite sweet it is surrounded by some stale, stale bread.

2.5 stars and I feel mean rounding this down because it isn’t that bad, but it isn’t that good either. There are some kernels of fun here, buried deep, and I might give it a second volume to see if it decides to do something else. I’m not in a rush though. If you want an alternative, I would say that The Dangers in My Heart is tackling a similar pairing, but is way better written (even though it also has its own issues).

Hitomi-chan is Shy with Strangers, Vol. 1 (My Kindle Review)

We follow high school sophomore Yuu who gets a big surprise in the form on new freshman Hitomi, a tall busty tomboy who is shy and is having socializing troubles due to her intimidating looks. However, her new friend helps her out and she quickly makes friends with his little sister Kaori, some neighborhood boys and one of her teachers. Of course, her relationship with Yuu gets a bit interesting.

It definitively has a few similar traits to “Komi Can’t Communicate” but our title character is less quiet and smiles like a shark. They’re a lot of funny and sweet moments in this more than simple manga. A- (91%/Excellent)

Soooo many boooooooob jokes! It's fan service central if you're into big breasts.

The concept is weak and ordinary, with big-breasted Hitomi unable to make many friends because she is shy and her face tends to have a scowl that scares people away. Her sharp teeth and sanpaku eyes certainly don't help matters. But luckily she befriends a short, nerdy guy who is able to see past her unfortunate mien to the sweetness within. Less luckily she is befriended by a girl in her high school class who is obsessed with her body . . . because fan service.

I'd be inclined to stop, but Hitomi is also an extremely tall girl, and I have a weakness for tall girl romances. This is no Love★Com, but it's been so long since I read that that I'll take what I can get. Onward.

This had me laughing a lot. I do wish there was more to the story. Title says she’s shy but haven’t really seen much of that.

This was a cute little read. Takano Hitomi Is incredibly shy and socially awkward so a lot of times people think she’s being aggressive or giving a very intense likes and making him comfortable but she’s really just shy and he’s actually a sweet girl informs a friendship with the girl across the street it’s a very fun ride I’d look forward to reading the rest of these.

Really enjoyed reading this, Hitomi-chan is so Darn Cute even when she smiles awkwardly with her shark shaped teeth!

I've read a few series similar and enjoyed each one so I'm positive I will love this one too, its already off to a great start!

This wasn't for me. It was quite boring and for a comedy manga it wasn't funny at all. The so called 'jokes' were repeated again and again but they weren't even funny the first time. It wasn't the worst thing I've read but it wasn't anything good either.

I'd give this first volume a 3.5 stars. It is a cute high school slice-of-life story with 2 likable MCs. I am not too impressed with the story yet, and a lot of the situations the MCs find themselves in have been done before in TONS of other series. However, I am enjoying the budding relationship between Hitomi and Usami so I am interested in seeing how it evolves. Also, I love a weird, awkward MC so I hope we get to see more character growth from Hitomi. My fingers are crossed that the next volumes will be more compelling and the situations the characters find themself in will be more interesting.

Lastly, there's a lot of focus on the female MCs boobs which I was NOT expecting. Unfortunately, the over-fetishization of female body parts is common in manga/anime but it doesn't add anything to the story other than fan service which I could have done without.

Cute, funny, fun school-life, and a bit sexy, too!

Takano is new to the area. She's tall, cute, has big boobs, a smoking hot body... and a scowl and shark teeth that would frighten even Freddy Krueger! Usami encounters her on the train, and they become friends. He's a year ahead of her, but is more than a foot shorter than her. His younger sister, Kaoru, who's also short, happens to be in the same class as Takano, and is in love with her rather impressive chest and washboard abs. Things carry along in fun, then towards the end of the volume, some sorta-romantic things start to happen between Takano and Usami. This is listed as a rom-com, so no surprise there. I'm sure good things are in store for these two. I look forward to the next volume.

Slightly fanservicey scary-dere romcom

A romcom with a short male lead and a tall befanged scary-dere female lead. Compared to others in the genre, this one felt more in the ecchi comedy direction. There's a lot of shots of Hitomi's bust and detailed shots of her abs. It was still cute and funny, but the regular ogling could turn off-putting.

This nearly inched into DNF territory for me; only reason for the two star was I felt bad for the protagonist; as someone who is shy and has been misinterpreted I can sympathize. However the other main characters blatant fan service as well as disrespect for her boundaries were really setting me off.

If you're a fan of Komi Can't Communicate and Uzaki Chan Wants to Hang Out, you will love this book. As where some books are "Will they? Won't they?" this book champions "Will they? Yes, but when." Readers who enjoy slice of life manga with some spice added to the mix should be sure to read this.

Esta es de esas historias románticas "slice of life" que no se la complican.
No tienen mayores conflictos, todo es con buenas vibras.
Doce tomos de vergonzosa protagonista y como supera el cliché en turno.

Younger teen manga. Cute art and storyline just focuses on a socially awkward well-endowed girl who is new in town and befriends a short but kind older high school student. Hijinks ensue.

This was a solid first volume! Not the most original concept and the art is doing anything new or crazy, but Hitomi's and Usami's friendship is genuinely cute and their interactions are fun. Despite the plethora of fan service, it looks like Hitomi's and Usami's (possible) future relationship is going to be wholesome and sweet, which I will 120% support. I'm curious to see how far the "Hitomi's scary appearance scares people" plotline is going to last and whether a new one will replace it later down the line.

Overall, this was a fun, quick read. If you're interested in a cute rom-com with some fan service, give this a shot.

I enjoyed reading this so much. This manga hit the target with a perfect balance between shy and romantic.

The two main leads are both likeable with neither being craven, which I hate. Hitomi Takano is brave and caring. She's just shy and can't fake smile. Usami Yuu is short but brave, cute and caring. What I like best is that the author isn't so focused on exploiting teen angst. The leads do things together and it's so clear that they enjoy being together. Yes there are cute moments when they bump hands and get shy but it's not ridiculous like so many shy romances are. You can tell that it's not just some juvenile attraction based on circumstance, they enjoy the same things and being together.

I don't think I spoiled anything with that review. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

All I wanted to say while reading this was, “Move over, Tomo-chan and Uzaki-chan!” because Seven Seas owns the rights to those series too…but overall you’ll be better off with something like Komi Can’t Communicate if you’re looking for something a bit deeper. This is just for those peeps who like awkward girls with big chests, I guess…

It's the socially inept girl genre, not quite mute levels of social anxiety and just a bit lewd. Decent but not yet great, I'll reserve judgements for volumes 2 and 3
