When Charlotte Grisham is saved from an out-of-control carriage by a handsome gentleman, she knows fate has sent her the perfect man. The Marquis of Hawksridge is titled, handsome, and heroic—precisely the kind of gentleman her parents want for her husband. Before Charlotte knows it, she is engaged to be married.
Daniel Weston can’t believe his identical twin brother is marrying a lady he barely knows. Moreover, he’s begging off his own engagement party. Daniel allows his twin to talk him into going to the week-long house party in his stead…just for a few days. They used to pretend to be each other all the time in their youth. What could possibly go wrong?
Charlotte immediately realizes her fiancé has sent in a doppelgänger, but continues the ruse so no one will realize her fiancé has all but abandoned her. Everyone sees her as perfectly behaved. But perfect girls do not share searing kisses with men who are not their betrothed. Charlotte knows her duty, but what about her heart?
From the time she read fairytales as a child, Karla Kratovil was hooked on stories that ended in Happily Ever After. Now as an author of sexy historical romance she gets to craft her own happy endings.
Karla lives right on the edge of wine country with her college sweetheart, two terrific teenagers, and two blond terriers. She is a Taurus. Like any good earth sign she loves good food, good wine, and getting her hands dirty growing things in her garden.
I'm over the twins-trade-places type of silly plots. I admit I used to find it funny. But now with our views on consent solidifying, I'm uncomfortable with it outside dark romance.
Karla Kratovil is becoming one of those authors on my "automatic buy" list. Doesn't matter what it's about. I'm buying it, and I know I'm going to enjoy it. I did not want to put this book down for anything, and while I was happy to see Charlotte and Daniel get their HEA, I was so bummed it was already over. But at least I know I have Ellie and Lucius's story to look forward to. **instantly hits pre-order button**
I picked up this book because promised high-stakes sound amazing, but a fifth of the way in the conflict feels secondary to descriptions of the house and gardens. Daniel is great but I'm not sold on the MCs as a couple, making it hard to come back to the page.
DNF at 22%.

A Perfect Engagement de Karla Kratovil serie A Maidens of Marbury libro 1
Argumento:
I received a copy of this from BookSprout and this is my freely given opinion.
I was not sure about this; I am not generally sold on the story-line of one twin pretending to be the other and was not sold on it in this one, but then again, obviously the heroine was not either since she figured that out pretty darn quickly herself.
Charlotte Grisham is a society miss who is edging being on the shelf; she is quite tall and curvy, and not a lot of self confidence. One can see why, the more read about her parents; they are truly horrible people. Regardless, the meet-cute between her and the Marquess of Hawksridge was the thing romance novels are written about - the handsome hero saves the damsel in distress...
Miles, the marquess in question, figures that he has to marry anyways, so why not offer for Miss Grisham, as she meets the social standards for being a marchioness. He is a busy man, with his various business and political endeavours, and this ticks off another one of his life tasks/expectations. So much for the romantic hero right? Anyways, with all that is going on in his life, he finds he cannot take the time to go and play the fiancee-role for a house party planned by Charlotte's family, to celebrate the engagement. So he turns to his twin brother, Daniel.
Daniel and Miles have drifted apart as twin brothers, with Daniel spending the last while managing the estate he has inherited, which happens to be near Little Marbury, which is not far from the home of Lord and Lady Markham, Charlotte's parents. But they are identical twins and have successfully portrayed each other in their more youthful, mischievous past. Daniel agrees to help his brother out for a couple of days, but what he did not anticipate was that he and Charlotte would be perfect matches for each other - if only Miles did not meet her first and she was engaged to him.
There was a lot of angst in this story. The love triangle between the brothers and Charlotte; her conflict between love/attraction and duty, the fractured relationship between the brothers, Daniel's history and his secrets, and the rather abusive family environment and expectations in the Markham family, to name the chief ones. Several times, it felt it was over the top, and edging on too much, but ultimately, I wanted to keep reading, to find out what happens. I loved the connection that Daniel had with Charlotte, and how he seemed to get her; they had so many shared interests, and she definitely needed someone to be on her side, since it was obvious her own parents weren't. I do wish there was more resolution of the relationship between the two brothers though - they started down that path, but I wanted to see more there, and hopefully there will be an HEA for Miles in the future?
3.75 stars out of 5. I quite enjoyed this romance.
LOVED this! It reminds me of the Bridgerton series. Romance was still alive and times were so much simpler! I will continue The Maidens of Marbury Series :)
This is a fun, pleasant Regency Romance that has some touches of humor and frenetic pacing toward the end. The "twin pretending to be the other twin" trope is one that doesn't usually work for me, and the reason why Miles, who is engaged to the h, Charlotte, asks his brother to pretend to be him is fairly silly. But the solid execution of the plot nearly makes up for the premise. First of all, Charlotte sees through the ruse right away (the scene of her realization is effective) and Daniel, the twin pretending to be MIles, is easygoing and genuinely likable. It's so easy to understand why Charlotte would fall for him, and that's why I enjoy the first half of the book the most. The focus is on their relationship, and the writer is able to create a believable bond between them, even though they've only known each other for a week. Their friendship and budding love seem genuine.
I also enjoyed the camaraderie between Charlotte's brother and Daniel, and the affection Charlotte has for her friends.
Around the 70% mark, though, I found myself getting increasingly annoyed with Charlotte. Yes, she's controlled by her parents and has always had to play the role of the good girl, but I always hate it when a Big Misunderstanding turns a character into a stubborn coward who won't talk the problem through. Granted, Daniel does have a pretty big, rather awkward, secret, and I wasn't sure exactly how he and Charlotte were going to end up with their HEA because of it. But I thought Daniel was forced to grovel excessively. After all, Miles had put him up to the deception in the first place, and Daniel had tried to be honest with Charlotte about his situation, she just didn't want to face it. And I thought it was strange that the book ended without a clear sense of how Charlotte's relationship with Josie would go. They never have a real interaction.
Charlotte's closest friends' personalities were a puzzle at times, as well. Susanna runs hot and cold in her interactions with Daniel and her enthusiasm toward the MCs' relationship. Ellie is cold from the beginning, with no explanation, but tries to help them get back together toward the end.
As far as villains go, Charlotte's parents are just nasty people, especially her mom, who gets worse toward the end. Miss Thornton's behavior becomes increasingly, cartoonishly nasty for no reason except she's spoiled (how does she get invited to the wedding anyway??). I was glad that Charlotte finally stood up to these characters, but it took her a long time. I think the mean girl could have easily have been left out of book, as she made the proceedings less credible and detracted from the primary conflict.
As far as cliffhangers go, there's a mystery involving love letters that will be addressed in the next book in the series.
Overall, this is an enjoyable read. I would give the first half of the book 4 1/2 stars. The second half I would give 3 1/2 stars. Average: 4.
Note: this is a slow-burn romance. There is a tastefully written sex scene toward the end, but before that there are only a couple of kisses.
I read an advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. My opinions are my own. Thanks to the author, publisher, and Booksprout.
A Perfect Engagement begins The Maidens of Marbury series with a twin switch trope that I was delighted to realize the heroine saw right through. I’ll always enjoy a romance where you cannot pull the wool over a main character’s eyes just because you happen to be the twin brother of the man she expects to show up at their week-long engagement party!
Charlotte has always been the dutiful, good daughter, so it’s really no surprise that when her power-hungry parents discover who exactly saved her from a possibly tragic carriage accident they immediately set about getting these two strangers engaged. To be fair to Miles, he was a busy man, busy with his properties, his duties, and his politics, and was not unhappy with the idea of a marriage with Charlotte because it was time he settled down and would take some “burdens” off of his schedule. And, people in his position marry basic strangers all the time. Yeah, my thoughts toward Miles are not kind given his attitude.
Daniel (Miles’ twin brother) had thought he and his brother were beyond the pretending to be each other stage of their lives, they were adults and adults didn’t do childish pranks. But he allowed his brother to convince him that Charlotte wouldn’t notice since they were practically strangers and that he would come to the engagement party in a few days after his important business was concluded. Daniel is a landowner in his own right with his estate to run, so he wasn’t unaware that Miles might have important business elsewhere, but to pull this kind of stunt on the woman his brother was to marry didn’t sit well with him. Brother loyalty is a thing, so he was talked into it with unexpected results.
I enjoyed A Perfect Engagement. And absolutely loved that Charlotte saw through Daniel’s twin switch immediately. She had perfectly good reason not to call him out about it publicly but had no trouble letting him know that she was not amused by his and his brother’s actions. I was emotionally involved as it turns out that she and Daniel were more suited to each other in all the ways that mattered – but saddened when the misunderstanding arose and almost ended the romance for these two unlikely people. There were plenty of nasty people within this story, others who I’d like to learn more about as the series continues. There is still, for me, unresolved issues to be addressed, mainly Miles’ future story that I’m comfortable believing will be revealed in another story in this series. There is definitely angst, some villainous-type parents, a growing love that is complicated, one heroine who needs to put herself first, and one hero who has to take his future into his own hands within this story. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for Saving a Scoundrel which is up next in this series, hoping to have some of my questions answered… before there are even more questions I’m sure.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from Tule Publishing. The opinions expressed in this review are my own – good, bad, or indifferent. I was not financially compensated for this review and no expectation of a positive review was promised.*
I enjoyed this story so much. The immediate and deep connection between Charlotte and Daniel is wonderful. There were aspects of the story, from reading the blurb, that I was afraid wouldn’t work for me. The new-to-me author handled it all so beautifully that it not only worked, but left me looking forward to reading more of her work.
Charlotte is such a great FMC. She is strong of mind, body, and spirit. Yet, the need to be what her parents want her to be and fulfil her perceived obligations to them makes her mute herself in their presence. She finds she is able to be her true self with Daniel, even more than with her closest friends.
The pull between these two gave me all the feels. Where Daniel doesn’t want to betray his brother or put Charlotte in a compromising position, he also knows his brother looks at Charlotte as a convenient wife and will never be what she needs him to be. Charlotte thinks the lack of connection with her betrothed is because she just may not know Miles well enough yet and, even if that’s not the case, it would embarrass her family if she were to call off her engagement. But the yearning between the two is palpable and I was rooting for them the whole time.
There is a very sweet sub-story that isn’t exactly wrapped up at the end of this book. It’s in no way consequential…yet. Charlotte and her friends find some love letters in a few old books and are enthralled with the way the author of the letters speaks of and to the woman he loves. I believe, as this series progresses, we’ll see more of these letters. And I also believe the letters were intended for someone we have met in this book. Just a small yet intriguing little addition to the bigger story that kept me interested to read more.
As I mentioned, I definitely would love to read more by this author. I was fully engrossed with this book and didn’t want to put it down.

A Perfect Engagement is a warm, witty and charming Regency romance that kicks off Karla Kratovil's new Maidens of Marbury series.
Charlotte Grisham is saved at the eleventh hour by a dashing gentleman who steps in to rescue her when a carriage veers out of control. Charlotte is immediately drawn to her handsome, titled and distinguished rescuer and it looks like all of her romantic hopes and dreams are about to come true because she soon finds herself engaged to the Marquis of Hawksridge. However, Charlotte is about to realize that her Marquis might not actually be the man for her...
Daniel Weston cannot believe that his identical twin brother has accepted to marry a woman he barely knows! Worse, his brother is now begging off his engagement party and now wants Daniel to take his place at a week-long house party and impersonate him! As children, the two brothers used to swap places all the time and surely this harmless masquerade will go off without a hitch. Fate, however, has got other ideas...
Charlotte immediately guesses that her betrothed has sent in a doppelganger, but she has no other choice but to go along with the ruse. Humiliated that her fiancé has all but abandoned her, Charlotte knows that she must keep up appearances at all costs - even if it means stealing a kiss with her fiancé's identical twin brother!
As Charlotte and Daniel get closer and closer, it soon transpires that there is nothing fake about their feelings for one another. Will they find the courage to admit the truth about how they really feel about one another? Or will propriety end up costing them their true happiness?
A sparkling historical romance, Karla Kratovil's A Perfect Engagement is a delightful Regency tale with a wonderful heroine, an honorable and charismatic hero and plenty of high society hi-jinks, delicious humor, tender passion and intense emotion to keep readers avidly turning the pages.
I adored reading Karla Kratovil's A Perfect Engagement and I cannot wait to read the next title in the Maidens of Marbury series.

Identical twins challenge a Lady’s struggle for true love.
“A Perfect Engagement” is my first of Karla Kratovil’s offerings that I have read and it is an exceptional book. The characters are wonderfully realistic and they keep the reader involved in the story from the beginning. Ms. Kratovil’s story telling talent and writing skill has produced a thoroughly enjoyable and very entertaining tale that I highly recommend. It is the initial novel in her “The Medians of “Marbury” series and I eagerly await the next 2 in the series. After being saves from and out of control carriage by a hansom marquess, Miles Weston, Lady Charlotte Grisham, believes she has found the perfect match. Within weeks they become betrothed and her future in-laws planned a week long engagement house party. Unfortunately Miles has a business problem that he believes is more important than the engagement party and he convinces his identical twin brother, Daniel, to attend the party in his stead. Almost immediately Charlotte discovers that Daniel is impersonating his brother and being the honorable man, he agrees to continue the ruse to protect Charlotte from embarrassment as well as a ruined reputation. As the week wears on, Daniel secretly falls in love with Charlotte and soon she finds that harbors feelings for him as well, without telling him. Before Miles returned Daniel and Charlotte realize their affection and they share a very passionate kiss. Miles returns and soon finds about about the situation and he and Daniel have a falling out causing the wedding to be advanced and Charlotte dose no know what to do but go along. At the wedding, the brothers reconcile as Miles realizes that he can’t marry Charlotte because of Daniel feelings. Charlotte runs from the church and the story ends with an HEA. You don’t want to miss this wonderful romance. Having received a free copy of this book via Booksprout, I have voluntarily left this review.
When Charlotte becomes engaged to Miles Weston, a marquess, her parents are delighted—they didn’t believe Charlotte capable of making such a good match, so they are over the moon when she secures such a high-ranking fiancé. The baron and baroness quickly plan an elaborate weeklong engagement party for the couple at their country estate—except that Miles, burdened with work, cannot make it to the party and sends his identical twin brother, Daniel, to stand in as himself. This setup is so fun! Miles and Charlotte became engaged after he pushed her out of the way of a speeding carriage and it happened quickly, so they don’t know each other very well. Nevertheless, Charlotte realizes right away that Daniel is not Miles—and quickly finds herself connecting in deeper ways with Daniel than she ever has with Miles. Daniel and Charlotte keep up the ruse to spare her the embarrassment of not having her fiancé attend their engagement party and, by the time Miles shows up, the two are essentially in love. It takes quite a bit of drama and personal bravery for this pair to find their HEA. There was one other thing that I really appreciated about this book. Daniel is still close with a former lover of his because they share a child together and this relationship is handled beautifully. It was nice to see a hero have an ex who is depicted in such a positive light—I really don’t care for the evil ex-mistress trope in historical romance and the depiction of Phoebe, Daniel’s ex, was a lovely departure from those types of depictions. Overall, I recommend A Perfect Engagement if you love identical twins, mistaken identities, and historicals that are on the lower end of the spice scale (but that still have some spice!).
Charlotte Grisham, daughter of Baron and Lady Markham is once again being berated by her mother pressing her to marry. Irritated at her complaints as they walk in the park, Charlotte rushes from her only to step in front of a carriage. But, she is grabbed by Miles Weston, Marquess of Hawksbridge and pulled to safety. As they get to know only another, they end up getting engaged just two weeks later.
Miles is a fairly new Marquess and extremely busy with his duties. To celebrate his and Charlotte’s engagement, her parents are hosting a 10-day house party. Miles is too busy to take that much time away from his duties so he calls upon his brother.
Daniel Weston, identical and younger twin to Miles, has a large farming estate that he loves running. He has recently learned a young women, Phoebe, with whom he had a liaison some years ago gave birth to his daughter, Josie. Now, Phoebe is dying of consumption and Daniel insists they stay with him. He is enthralled with Josie and with being a father.
As Daniel and Miles used to love impersonating one another in their youth, Miles is sure that Daniel can act as him for a few days of the party and he will then step in once he has taken care of some pressing engagements.
At the party, Charlotte and her sharp eyes immediately realize that the man posing as Miles has to be his twin brother. Calling him on it, they agree to keep the secret until the real Miles arrives. However, they do not count on how well they get along and how much they have have in common. In addition, their togetherness sparks an attraction. Oh dear. What do they do next?
What a totally delightful book with a fabulous plot and fun characters. The descriptions and all of the side stories makes this book a terrific read. One of the best historical romance novels I have ever read. Don’t miss it!
Copy provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A delightful story in which love wins against the expectations of society.
Charlotte is saved from certain death by the Marquess of Hawksridge. He rescued her from a carriage that had run her over otherwise. Miles is looking for a woman to give him sons and proposes to her. Her parents can't believe their luck and organize a 10-day engagement party. However, Miles has urgent business and can't join right away. Not wanting to disappoint Charlotte, he asks his identical twin brother Daniel to take his place for a few days. Not knowing that in doing so he creates destiny for them......Charlotte and Daniel fall in love....
A romantic story where two like-minded people find each other knowing that it has no future. Charlotte has always done what her parents want her to do. Has always done what others around her expect of her. How can she choose for herself and bear the shame that this brings? Also for her family!
I really enjoyed this romantic story.

Charlotte Grisham is in danger of begin run over by an out of control carriage. A handsome gentleman saves her from harm. She becomes engaged to the Marquess of Hawksridge. But will Miles make her happy or is this just a convenient marriage?
Daniel Weston, Miles’ twin brother, is asked to take Miles’ place at the week-long party to celebrate the engagement while pretending to be his brother who is tied up with business issues. But when Daniel falls in love with her, which man will she marry? Will she follow the duty her father has imposed upon her, or follow her own heart?
I enjoy these stories, and this one gives us a little piece of mystery concerning love letters which I am sure will be addressed in future books in this series.
When identical twins swap places things can get confused especially when one is engaged. Marcus is engaged to Lady Charlotte but can't get to the engagement house party due to business so he sends his brother instead to not embarrass his fiancee. Charlotte notices immediately and wonders what happened to Marcus. When informed of the business problems she agrees to go along with the switch. For three days both Daniel and Charlotte are getting to know one another, but that's not what's to happen. Daniel is in love with Charlotte, but when Marcus arrives Daniel tells Marcus of his love. Marcus agrees to go along with he marriage. What happens is a big surprise. With the help of her friends does everything work out or is there still conflict between the brothers.

What starts for Charlotte as a rescuing from a knight in shining armour, takes a turn to find instead the true hero of her heart! A beautiful story that tells that what we think we want may not truly be what our heart desires and that living for everyone else will never fill your heart. Charlotte has always been a good girl, doing exactly what was expected of her. She allowed everyone else’s desires to dictate her choices. Until her heart finds the one she is meant to be with, now she needs to dig deep for courage to grasp what her heart is telling he. The story takes a good many turns, but all leading to the right and true happy ending. The characters are so well written that you quickly take Charlottes group of friends into your heart. I can not wait to hear Lucius’ story. The loyalty and love of her friends and her brother help to create the kind woman she is. A delightful story!
A Perfect Engagement is the first in a new series by a new o me author, Karla Kratovil. The Maidens of Marbury book one is an interesting study in twin role switching. Marcus is engaged to Lady Charlotte but talks his twin into taking his place at the engagement party until he can get there himself. What happens next is a big surprise. Charlotte realizes the switch but goes along with it. Now Daniel falls for her too. Which brother will actually marry Charlotte?
An amazing historical romance with twins that may have switched places one time too many. With strong characters, wonderful writing, and interesting surprise this is one great story. A new author for me to follow. Read A Perfect Engagement today.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Charlotte always does what is expected of her. She always does the right thing. When a handsome stranger saves her from being run over by a carriage her life takes an unexpected turn. When said man offers for her she can't say no. Yes, it is fast and he hardly knows him but that will come in time. He is a good match and her family is thrilled. Miles needs a wife. It is the next step now that he is a Lord. Charlotte is pretty and intelligent and would be a good mother for his children. When duty gets in the way of his engagement week at the home of Charlotte's parents he sends his identical twin, Daniel, in his place. Charlotte instantly knows this is not her intended. He looks like him but more relaxed. She enjoys his company a little too much. When Daniel feels the same what could possibly go wrong? Good read.
A well-written romantic story, a Marquis asks his twin brother to take his place at the house party to celebrate his engagement with Charlotte. He and Charlotte haven't known each other very long, so he doesn’t think she'd find out. However, she does, and she confronts brother Daniel. So, during the time Charlotte and Daniel are spending time together, they know very well who they are falling in love with. Then the Marquis, Miles, comes to the party himself....... It is nicely written, but sometimes I thought it started to look too much like a farce, sometimes too predictable and cliche characters and statement. Still, I think it could be an interesting series.

3 1/2 Stars.....When Charlotte Grisham is nearly run down by an out of control carriage, a handsome gentleman saves her. She becomes engaged to the Marquess of Hawksridge, but will Miles make her happy or is this just a convenient marriage? Daniel Weston, Miles’ twin brother, is asked to take Miles’ place at the week-long party to celebrate the engagement. The identical twins played this prank often as children, and Miles feels this business is more important. Charlotte.feels right away that something is different about the fiancé she hardly knows, but she has an attraction to this man, as he does to her. The book is well paced, steamy, and the story well developed. A solid read.

Karla Kratovil’s “A Perfect Engagement” (The Maidens of Marbury Book 1)
Karla Kratovil is a new author to me and one I’m sure to follow. The book was a delightful read. Charlotte is quite astute and clever. Daniel was so loyal and sweet. It’s a delightful story that’s not all that it seems and I was totally captivated from start to finish. The author did a fine job on wonderful characters. The story is well written and I loved the author’s writing style.
I’m intrigued by the love letters and hope that it’s a series progresses we learn more about them.
Thank you Ms. Kratovil for this absolutely charming love story! I eagerly await the next book in the series.
He's standing in for his identical twin. She realizes immediately that he is not her betrothed. What happens next may be a bit predictable, but it is also humorous and engaging.
Overall I liked A Perfect Engagement by Karla Kratovil. It was well written with a nice balance of dialogue, introspection and scene movement. The plot had a couple of twists, and the characters had depth. I liked the ending, but I felt the story needed an epilogue.
Content 411: In addition to some mild secular and religious swearing, this book also contains domestic bullying and one sex scene.
Charlotte is rescued from her runaway carriage. Her parents work to get the Marquis and Hawksridge, Miles, engaged. Well Miles is a very busy man and cannot be bothered to attend his own engagement parties. Miles sends his twinn Daniel to stand in. Charlotte knows the ruse but is taken with Daniel. This is a just such a great story and such an interesting and unique plot. I really enjoyed this story, it is just so refreshing and new. Great story.

A chance meeting, an unwanted engagement, lady in peril, lot of twist and turns, twins changing places, saving a lady's honor and budding love for a lady bethroted to his brother who wants to escape this engagement. Can it get more complicated? I don't think so but the true love knows no boundaries and our hero and heroine will find their HEA.

Which one will she marry? As soon as I realized there were twins I knew that was going to cause all sorts of problems. I like that Charlotte knew just what was going on. It does become a bit of a tangled mess but it was a very entertaining book to spend time with. I loved the story about the letters a nice add in to the piece. Before I forget yes there are some steamy scenes for the reader to enjoy. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

The story itself was a good one. And it started out as a clean romance. The entire first half was great. Then the author turned a romance into pornography. I'm extremely disappointed. There also seems to be a cliffhanger, which also disappointed me. So I don't plan to read anything by this author in the future, even though her writing of the plot itself was very good.
3.5 stars, rounded up. This one got me out of a reading slump. I love a silly premise and twin brothers swapping places for one’s engagement party is definitely silly. There were some pacing issues (some parts seemed to drag out longer than needed and the ending was a little rushed), but overall this was an enjoyable slow burn. It also sets up a fun side plot that seems to be continued in future books — mysterious love letters and the identity of the subjects of the letters.
Have you ever wondered if you were born in the wrong century? After reading this book, I feel that way. Daniel is everything a woman could want in a man and Charlotte is the woman he wants.
Really, you could blame this all on Daniel's twin brother or give him the credit. I loved Daniel and Charlotte in this book. They were the ultimate couple. My heart only broke in the chapter with the pianoforte and the reveal. Quickly, it was repaired when Charlotte reclaimed her backbone and with that her mind.
For those who have problems with language and sexual situations, Daniel uses a couple words when he's berating himself and there is a sexual situation toward the end of the book.
