Sven Nordqvist
185 books284 followersSven Nordqvist (born 30 April 1946) is a Swedish writer and illustrator of children's books. He is best known for his series Pettson and Findus, about an old farmer, Pettson, and his talented cat, Findus.
Nordqvist was born in Helsingborg and grew up in Halmstad, Sweden. He originally wanted to be an illustrator but was rejected by several art schools. Instead he studied architecture at Lund Institute of Technology, and worked for a time there as a lecturer in architecture. At the same time he continued to look for work as an illustrator working on advertisements, posters and picture books. In 1983 he won first prize in a children's book competition and since then has worked exclusively as an author and illustrator of children's books.
He is married and has two grown sons.
During his career, he has been given awards in both Sweden and Germany. His Pettson and Findus books are especially popular in Germany, where the characters are known as Pettersson and Findus. In Danish they are called Peddersen and Findus. In Finnish they are called Pesonen and Viiru. And in English, Festus and Mercury, though English translations of the books exist with the original names kept.
In 2007 he won the literary award Augustpriset in the children's books category, for his book Var är min syster? ("Where is my sister?"). In 1992 he won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis

Festus and Mercury look forward to Christmas and the traditions they keep each year. They start the day intending to collect and prepare the necessary supplies, but a bit of excitement leads to a small accident and an injured foot for Festus. What was to be a festive and happy Christmas now looks to be a sad and depressing day as Festus is unable to complete the holiday tasks or get to the store for the food they need. The creative duo does their best to make do and make merry until good friends stop by and enliven spirits and make over the day into a cheerful social gathering. With Festus’s quirkiness and Mercury’s joviality, you wish you too could be a part of the festivities. A warmhearted and cozy read of friends and neighbors coming together in true friendship.

A fun story about a man called Pettson who lives with his clever, talking cat called Findus. This story starts with Pettson and Findus starting their Christmas preparations. When Pettson hurts his foot it looks like they won't be able to get the things they need for Christmas. Luckily their neighbours hear of their predicament and bring round lots of traditional Christmas food. With some inventiveness they make a tree and decorations and enjoy their celebrations together.
This is a fun story with some lovely illustrations that have plenty to look at. I enjoyed the little creatures that live around their house. Findus is a very cute cat, I can imagine he will be a very endearing character for children to empathise with. There are lots of nice elements to this one, recycling, helping neighbours, friendship and appreciating a quiet Christmas with those you love. This has plenty of text so ideal for children who enjoy a longer picture book read.

Mir ist dieses herzerwärmende Buch auf dem Regal meines Sohnes in die Hände gefallen. Irgendwie hatte ich diese Geschichte von Petterson und Findus bislang übersehen. Vielleicht nicht eine der besten, aber Findus Weihnachtsbaumschmuck aus herumliegenden Gegenständen (der echte liegt für den verletzten Petterson unerreichbar auf dem Dachboden) ist herrlich.

Vielleicht sollte ich mit dem ersten Teil anfangen, der erklärt wie aus dem alten Petterson und dem Kater Findus eine Wohngemeinschaft wird. Aber schön mal einen alten Mann, der kein Opa ist und eigentlich doch ganz gerne alleine ist, in einem Kinderbuch anzutreffen.
Wunderbar illustriert ist das Buch auch, vor allem die kleinen Wichtel, die hier und da durchs Bild rennen, haben es mir angetan.

Merry Christmas, Festus and Mercury, 1989 American translation of Pettson får julbesök.
Originally published in Swedish as Pettson får julbesök, this fourth picture-book devoted to the adventures of farmer Pettson and his cat Findus (Festus and Mercury in this American translation) is a heartwarming holiday tale that highlights the importance of community, while also capturing the quirky individuality of its human and feline heroes. When Festus is injured while out cutting fir branches to decorate the front door for the holidays, and can't get to the store to buy supplies, or to the woods to cut a tree, it looks like Christmas will be a very grim one indeed! Thankfully, a young neighbor boy named Axel stops by, and learning of the problem, alerts all of the other neighbors, who descend upon Festus and Mercury in an impromptu party, making it a very merry Christmas after all.
Unlike the first Pettson and Findus title, which I read in two different English translations - one, Pancake Pie , an American edition, and the other, The Birthday Cake , done by the original Swedish publisher - I was only able to obtain this American version of Pettson får julbesök. Given my feelings about the translations listed above, one of which ( The Birthday Cake ) was far more comprehensive than the other, I have reason to suspect that Merry Christmas, Festus and Mercury is somewhat abridged. Still, in the absence of any other edition with which I might compare it (I don't read Swedish, and Findus at Christmas isn't due out until this coming October), I enjoyed this book immensely!
The artwork is just as detailed and humorous as the first book (I haven't yet tracked down the second), and the story just as satisfying. Pettson and Findus (sorry, Festus and Mercury here) are engaging characters, and their madcap antics make for fun reading. I liked that the sharpness of their characters, and the pointed humor of their interaction, isn't blunted by the goodhearted theme of neighborly care at Christmas, but that the two strands of the story exist side-by-side. All in all, a sweet little holiday tale, and more than enough to convince me to continue with my Sven Nordqvist extravaganza!

Vroeger las ik dit kerstboek elk jaar aan de kinderen. Nu lees ik het voor mijzelf, vanwege de zoete herinneringen en de knusse prenten. ❤️ van opa Pettson en Findus, zijn kat-met-gebruiksaanwijzing en zijn gezellige huis aan de rand van het bos.

Stackars Pettson har brutit foten och julen verkar vara i fara, men turligt har de så trevliga grannar och Findus hjälper såklart också till.

A delightful Christmas story. It’s important to check in on our neighbours to see how they’re doing, especially during the Christmas season. If you haven’t enjoyed Festus and Mercury books, I highly recommend you see if your library system has them. We love them!

Perfect book to mend my bad mood today and get me in real Christmas spirit. One of those books I remember vividly from my childhood and it's just as amazing now as it was back then. The story is heartwarming and wholesome and the art is spot on. This book is utter Christmas perfection ❤️

I got this wonderful book as a christmas present from a Swedish friend of mine last christmas, but since it arrived after christmas I wanted to save it for a different occassion to read it c:
This year I wanted to read it so on the delightful night after Christmas, just before going off to Dreamland I read this lovely and charming present.
What followed was a cute story of a man and his cat, filled with amazing and detialed illustrations filled with delightful visual gags and morale of hope and trusting in your loved ones. And frankly, for a story at christmas time, that's perhaps the best thing on could ask for <3

Дідусь Петсон і кіт Фіндус завзято готувалися до Різдва. Але сталося непередбачуване – Петсон пошкодив ногу і не зміг дістатися до крамниці по продукти для святкового столу. Їхній з котом Фіндусом святковий настрій врятували люди, які завітали до них на Святвечір, і не лише принесли їжу, а й зробили їхнє Різдво гамірним і веселим.
😍Ось дуже веселий уривок із книжки про кота Фіндуса:
✍️"Усю підлогу залила вода. Фіндус перекинув відро і, ставши на щітку, мовби на дошку серфінга, почав кружляти Кухонною затокою. З нього вийшов неперевершений серфінгіст. Він їздив на одній лапі, на двох передніх лапах і кривуляв поміж ніжками стола так, що хвилі прибою досягали аж до кухонних дверей".
Дуже смішна ілюстрація того, як Фіндус миє підлогу😂

O lectură absolut savuroasă, cu umor și bună dispoziție, pe care vrei să o citești la nesfârșit. Cei mici nu au cum să nu guste aventurile celor doi prieteni simpatici, care au parte de multe peripeții în prag de Crăciun. Nici cei mari nu se vor plictisi lecturând cartea alături de copii, narațiunea lui Sven Nordqvist având un farmec special, ce îi magnetizează pe toți cei ce au suflet de copil.

Auch dieses Buch wird - obwohl es ein P&F-Buch ist, die wir sehr lieben! - für 11 Monate im Jahr versteckt. Und es ist eines der liebsten Bücher, die wir in der Vorweihnachtszeit lesen.
Eigentlich braucht man gar nicht viel dazu sagen. Wer es noch nicht hat - lest es. Lest es euren Kindern vor. Einfach schön!

I am fond of these two characters, but this is above all a story about the Christmas spirit of joy and community, and just about any characters could have filled the roles. I'm going to let this one go (give the copy I owned away).

4 1/2 stars. We love the Findus and Pettson books in our home. It's a shame they aren't more widely known in the U.S.
