Now that he has made a name for himself and shown his courage in battle Sven Saxon Sword becomes not only a leader in battle but also a target for others when he fights. Beginning with the Battle of Svolder when hundreds of ships clashed in the sea, the novel takes us through the maelstrom of war. Sweyn Forkbeard has ambitions in the west where there is a weak Saxon king, Aethelred. Sven Saxon Sword and his foster father are part of the force which battles in Wessex, Cornwall and Kent. As they battle the clan grows and becomes more powerful. Sven Saxon Sword becomes a warrior of even greater renown and a leader of men.

I was born in 1950 in Lancashire and attended a boy’s grammar school. After qualifying as an English and Drama teacher in 1972, I worked in the North East of England for the next 35 years. During that time I did write, mainly plays, pantos and musicals for the students at the three schools in which I worked.

When I stopped teaching I set up my own consultancy firm and worked as an adviser in schools and colleges in the North East of England. The new Conservative Government ended that avenue of work and in 2010 I found that I had time on my hands; having started work at the age of 15 I found the lack of work not to my liking and used the time to research the Roman invasion of Britain and begin to create a novel. The result was The Sword of Cartimandua.

My decision to begin writing was one of the best I have ever taken.

Sven has grown in to a man an a father. He lives a clean life an he is fair to his men. Sven is a humble man, he gets embarrassed when he is praised. When he becomes a hersir, that is a land owner, he has men that fight for him when he goes into battle or raids. He cares the dragon sword an men want to fight with him an his men an there are men who want the sword for they think it has magic with in that keep him an any who are around him safe.
An nice smooth read. Just one question Mr. Hosker, how old is Sven???

Two Stories in One Novel

The first half is more involved with being building Oathsword and his reputation (by using it!). Then his neutering starts and continues through the end of story. This is the story of the second half. His Christian wife rips out his pagan heart and replaces it (figuratively…don’t get ideas!) and replaces it piece by piece with a squishy spirit that is liable to get people killed in the Real World.

It’s approaching the Middle Ages and it’s an extremely violent time. Life is cheap and the dictatorial powers of kings are being returned to humanity. To become a turn the other cheek type of Christian in that type society is very dangerous.

Pretty much like what our violent and intimidating groups are turning Western Civilization into - a population that is losing its Freedoms and Liberties after over 500 years of our ancestors fighting and dying for it.

I shudder to learn if Sven Saxon Sword turns into another Siggi in the next book.

The saving factor is that Griff does all of this with heart and skill like a surgeon, not a butcher with a cleaver.

Always enjoyable

No matter which subject Griff writes about the stories are always enjoyable and this is no exception.
The tales are all interesting and very easy to read and understand:

Review for the full trilogy:

Sven’s father is taken from him when he is young. When his uncle steps in to be his foster-father, Sven begins to learn leadership and warrior skills from the clan leader. Sven is much more of a thinking than his father. What I love about these stories is that you learn about the structure and hierarchy of the Norse cultures while being thrown into the center of the story. Griff is a fantastic storyteller! Battles, slavery, honor, thievery, blood, hate and love. All of that is in spades in these books.
