I started this year with a reading goal of 100 books (more than I've read in any previous year) as well as co-running a monthly book club. for the past few months, reading has filled the space in my daily commute, quiet times at work, cooking, etc. but quickly became about quantity. I read books that I didn't care for and therefore, didn't enjoy as much as I would have otherwise.

"again" is the first book in a few years that I've physically carried with me on daily adventures. it broke my downward reading spiral (like a slump except you keep reading books you KNOW will disappoint, repeat.) in a very belle fashion, I walked while reading and laughed to it while walking.

I was surprised to see myself and those in my life reflected in this book. it is particularly exciting to hear a character explicitly state that they're filipina (so much that I have curated a shelf with even the most background of characters.) I did not think it was possible—to be seen in crucifixes and broken homes, to yearn for something better than what you grew up with, to try to not make the same choices as your parents but to still make mistakes... it feels very human. rowe and ben's story is very heartfelt, but grounded. with no fairytale fix, it's a bit bittersweet.

on a last note, I'll leave a quote from the book. it's very earnest and knowing the events that follow, it's my favourite:

This book is as good as it was when I first read it on fanfiction. I think it is actually better. It has been years since I had last read it and have been waiting with anticipation since the author had announced that she was rereleasing the book as her own. Obviously changing the names and any similarities to the fandom she wrote about. I read this book so fast by speeding through homework with so many wrong answers. But I'm not ashamed of that, couple of lost homework points is worth the excitement and happiness that I got from reading this book. This author puts out such amazing content on other fanfiction sites and I can't wait till the second book comes out in March.
