This is probably the strongest collection of tie-ins for this event. The X-Men story is perfect for fans following along with the main X-Men titles in Krakoa, while also acting as a solid enough tie-in to the Devil’s Reign event itself. It’s not necessary or anything, but it is filled with some cool flashback scenes and solid character moments. And the Winter Soldier one-shot is a great little introspective thriller that finishes off the collection strong.

Just like with the collected editions of Devil’s Reign: Villains For Hire and Devil’s Reign: Superior Four, this trade collects all 3 issues of a tie-in miniseries and an assorted one-shot from the event, with the ones in here being the X-Men mini and a Winter Soldier issue. And just like those other trades, full reviews for both stories can be found down below:

”X-Men” by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto, Cory Pett, Clayton Cowles, and Joe Caramagna ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

This is a Devil’s Reign tie-in mainly about Emma Frost and her past connections with Fisk, but we do get some looks at the X-Men themselves and even Elektra at points. The smaller character beats are the highlight of the whole book though, with a wonderful scene between Emma Frost and Spider-Man being my favorite moment from the whole thing.

Phil Noto’s art is also fantastic, with his action scenes in this being some of my favorite he’s ever done. Every time Elektra or Emma Frost does anything, it just looks utterly stunning. Recommended for any and all X-Men fans, especially those who like Emma Frost.

”Winter Soldier” by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Nico Leon, Felipe Sobreiro, Joe Caramagna ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

A very introspective Winter Soldier one-shot that shows him breaking into Kingpin’s home to get his Winter Soldier file. Nico Leon’s art is glorious throughout, and he uses both shadow and color to his advantage perfectly. He’s able to switch the art seamlessly back and forth between a gritty noir look and a more surrealist dream style, and he brings Lanzing’s and Kelly’s tense script to life beautifully.

One of the better tie-in issues for this event. It also looks like the story from it will be continued in Lanzing and Kelly’s Capt. America book.

A stagnant story with a strong protagonist. Emma Frost's presence, when done right, is enough to bolster even the blandest of books. She is certainly the reason why this can be enjoyed. The other characters serve narrative purposes, yet they ultimately pale in comparison when it comes to characterisation. Duggan has tried to write a tie in that is entertaining in its own right, but it doesn't wow in the slightest.

Pretty standard event tie-in stuff. There’s nothing here you need to know to understand the main Devil’s Reign book. It was nice to see Union Jack, though, and Phil Noto’s artwork is always great.

so, since this was emma frost-focused and she was written so marvellously… i’m biased. so very biased. she’s so… strong… and funny.. and sarcastic… and kind... in this.

more wilson fisk content always makes me happy as well! the way he was drawn in this sickened me though, too.. too much going on there.

the winter soldier chapter in this was lowkey shit but i’m gonna pretend it doesn’t exist so it doesn’t detract from the experience of emma.

- seeing fisk hate mutants hurts me 💔
- elektra and emma wasn’t a duo i ever thought i needed but wow, i loved that
- “you were just a boy. thank you for what you do.” and she kissed his cheek! AWW YES, so sweet
- bruh when bucky said “i reach for the flag” and he’s holding the american flag, i almost died of cringe
- fisk is so OP, but he’s great so i don’t even care

The Kingpin has dirt on pretty much everyone, and he's not afraid to use it. Enter Emma Frost, who knows a master manipulator when she sees one. But is she the player, or the played? And then the Winter Soldier raids the Kingpin's home, but even a one-man army like him might have a problem getting back out again.

Gerry Duggan's been writing Emma Frost successfully for a few years now over in Marauders, and he brings that same energy to the character here. It's easy to make Emma a snarky bitch, but making her an enjoyable character is a whole different kettle of fish that Duggan manages to lock down easily. The addition of Elektra keeps things interesting, and there's a flashback sequence with Spider-Man that's possibly the loveliest thing I've read in a long time, even if it's tinged with sadness. Plus Phil Noto draws all three issues, and he's always a treat on the eye.

The Winter Soldier one-shot is also surprisingly solid, and fits into the theme of Kingpin's secret files quite well. This is pretty much Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing's audition to write him over in Captain America, and they hit all the right notes, while Nico Leon's artwork sings even in the darkest panels.

If you're looking for any Devil's Reign tie-in to check in on, this is definitely the one I'd recommend. The Emma Frost story is worth the price of admission alone.

The team behind the bad Cable run make a bad Devil’s Reign event book. Typical Marvel tie-in, totally skippable but still related enough to warrant skimming through if you desire.

Emma is pretty awesome, and doesn’t usually let anyone get the upper hand even for a moment.

So to see her having to fight back against an opponent of the wiles like Wilson Fisk, that’s a story we could have used a longer run on. Thanks Gerry for giving us a taste, maybe you’ll get another crack at stories like this again soon?

The X-Men. The Devil's Reign X-Men issues lead off with Gerry Duggan's X-Men. It's a nice continuation of the main title, other than the fact that the main title is a waste of both Duggan's and Krakoa's potential. So, yeah. But the last two issues become a White Queen story, and they're excellent. Duggan has a great handle on her character and tells a great story about her and Elektra [4+/5].

Winter Soldier. Barely comprehensible. Muddy art. This might be of interest to someone following Bucky's story, but it makes very little sense to me [2/5].

Fantastic build for White Queen as she navigates her past issues with Kingpin and where she currently stands. Also re-cementing herself as the vicious badass she really is. Her interaction with Spider-Man in the past is an adorable moment.

Way better than I expected. A tie-in, but a good story in it's own right. Frost is no joke. A bit scary even.

[relecture]

I haven't read Devil's Reign but I read around it - that is to say, I dropped Spiderman because I didn't want to buy the event. But this is the story Emma Frost fans point to when they want to say "Love our white queen" so I figured I'd pick it up.

While Kingpin is mayor of New York he tries to make a move on the Krakoan nation's embassy/treehouse.
Treehouse from Vol. 6 of X-Men
sidenote: the current X-Men run has excellent eco-fiction, if that's your jam

But defending the diplomatic and political ambitions of the X-Men is former dominatrix, reformed villainess, and telepath Emma Frost. She, like all X-Men, has a long and complicated history but right now she runs the (above-board) department for Krakoan politics and is tasked with defending the diplomatic immunity of the treehouse.

Frost worked with Kingpin earlier in Duggan's Marauders #22 and it is cool to see Duggan follow through in this story, as Kingpin and Emma Frost both reach to their sordid pasts to dig up dirt on each other.

I thought this would be a tense thriller between Kingpin's political genius and Frost's Omega-level powers but both of them seem to be stuck in daycare, and not because neither of them could hit above the belt. Frankly speaking, blackmail seems like amateur hour to both of them. Amidst Frost's many misdeeds (and the fact she's a mutant), why does Kingpin need to bust her for mortgage fraud? It feels so unrelated to his original goal.

The art seemed nice but is not something I typically notice. Therefore I don't feel qualified to rate it.

Emma fans clearly like this book for three reasons.

1.The Queen takes on England
Emma Frost escapes British custody by clowning the bobbies with her mind tricks. It's a nice reminder of how powerful she is (especially after we learn that anyone with a simple brain implant)

2. Emma is a hero
In Emma's rocky past we've seen her be a villain, a hero, and a villain again. But she's also a teacher and someone with a fond spot for children. In this series, we see her strength and devotion to the principle of saving children's lives. It's always enjoyable to see a grumpus start to care.

Carl from Up places a badge on Russel's scout sashee

2. Emma <3 Spiderman
While Emma isn't a bad guy, it's a real treat to see her interact with and understand Spider-man. Peter Parker has no shortage of villains, adversaries, and misunderstandings so it was a fan-favourite moment when Emma Frost used her telepathy and accidentally gained an empathic understanding of who he was.
I think it's a reminder that Spider-Man is a hero not because of his powers but because of his maturity and responsibility, and fans like me eat that up!

I'll also mention the back up issue featuring Winter Soldier by Kelly and Lanzing. They're BFFs who write comics together and I'm loving their current run on Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, Vol. 1: Revolution, and currently Captain America: Cold War which this book leads to.

Ultimately, its an unnecessary issue for the current run (but what praytell makes any comic book necessary?) It features a fearsome fight between Bucky and Kingpin and I liked it, but it's not the kind of issue you'll think about years from now. I'd say skip straight ahead to Captain America Sentinel of Liberty!

And don't worry. It features Emma Frost too

The Devil’s Reign continues… and how will it affect the X-Men?!

While we do get the answer to this question, the crux of the story is upon Emma Frost’s past dealings with the Kingpin of crime and how they may come back to bite her!

Wilson Fisk has files on just about everybody. Anything that could be used to exploit an unwilling target, and any information that could prove useful to him in the future.

Enter - The Winter Soldier. Those files are the very reason he gets involved with the criminal mayor, with his own motives for going after them.

All in all, this is a fun tie-in mini series that puts the center of focus squarely upon Emma Frost, as well as a great story that lends itself to Elektra’s overarching characterization.

The Winter Soldier one-shot was a phenomenal addition which not only kicks off a new storyline for him, (to be followed upon in the upcoming Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty series) but also gives a haunting look into Wilson Fisk’s mind and just how much he’s reeling from the absence of vital information he once had in his mind. Plus, the art in this issue is killer!

Long story short: I’d absolutely recommend to anyone reading the Devil’s Reign event! Well written and well drawn! I double recommend to any Emma Frost fans out there!

And even if you’re just a Winter Soldier fan who plans to pick up the new Captain America book, I’d at least find a way to pick up that issue even if you never read anything else from Devil’s Reign. It’ll inform his headspace when his story picks up there!

Part of the "Devil's Reign" storyline, this Volume divides into two stories:
1) Emma Frost used to be part of the evil-esque Hellfire Club, and did business with Kingpin. Emma humiliated him way back, so Fisk (in following with the getting rid of all heroes stance from the main Reign title) wants to use leverage he has on Emma's past to get the X-Men out of NYC. Most of it revolves around a kid named Isabelle and how Emma (along with Elektra) was able to remove this girl from a horrible situation as a kid, which allows Fisk to claim that Emma was the kidnapper. The girl comes forward to clear Frost's name, and Emma has a nighttime mental attack that shows Wilson Fisk that he needs to back off when it comes to Krakoa and the mutants.
2) Winter Soldier wants to obtain the folder the Fisk has full of info on him. He does so, but not until dealing with a sleepwalking and fighting Fisk. Not easy with his uncanny strength...

Overall, this book was definitely an add-on so that both of these books could be part of the main story. Neither seem very important overall. The X-Men art was good, but the Winter Soldier stuff was very hard to go through.
Skip this one, unless you are a fan. Not bad, just not essential.

This is the last of the Devil's Reign tie-ins that I'm working through and it's probably the most enjoyable one as well. And this is despite the fact that the stories contained here once again don't super affect the main event story. Or maybe they just put together two really good stories.

The main arc is the 3-issue X-Men story that is focused on Emma Frost and new aspects of her history as tied to Wilson Fisk. The story takes some liberties with how they depict her and this is Emma truly being fast and loose with her abilities both in the past and in the present. But that's what make this story so fun as Emma is a delightfully wicked character at her core and it's nice to have more of the older Emma in play.

Then the solo story is focused on the Winter Soldier and it's a bit confusing but the tone and artistic treatment is great. It's certainly compelling stuff and a blatant setup for a whole other longer-running story for Bucky.

Both stories are solid and very well done. If only the rest of the event had been similarly satisfying.

This is my favourite of all the Devil's Reign companions. This is a reminder of Emma Frost and Elektra's reputations. As Elektra would say

"There is a reason gor my rep."

In his days as the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk had two enforcers. Elektra the assassin, the "Bad Witch," who took people out permanently and the more subtle Emma Frost, the "Good Witch." Now, with a conflict with the X-MEN operating in New York. Mayor Fisk is going to use one of Emma's part sins against her. Emma is not going to take that in and form.

Devil's Reign started with the discovery by Mayor Fisk that his mind had been altered. Bucky knows a thing or two about that. Bucky wants to know about his past, so he wants the Kingpin's file on him. Trouble Fisk is in no condition to be talked to. This sets up Buck in the Sentinel of Liberty series.

Two great stories that add to Devil's Reign and beyond thus us what a companion book should do. On a personal basis, it was great to see Elektra lethal again. The book finishes with a varient cover gallery.

Do you like Emma Frost stories? Do you think stories about telepaths making people do weird stuff is fun? Boy, do they have a story for you!

This is essentially an Emma Frost miniseries that got added to 'Devil's Reign' because of the characters and locations used. We get to see how Emma had a tenuous relationship with Wilson Fisk during his 'Kingpin' days. He gave her some leeway when she came through town and she accepted certain...jobs that he needed done. Not every job was a murder or an assassination. Emma could make people do or say whatever Fisk needed with little to no bloodshed.

When he tries to play hardball and pin events on the White Queen, Emma strikes back...
Always remember: Don't mess with the White Queen.

Bonus: Captain Krakatoa is still a legit DUMB superhero ID
Bonus Bonus: Shouldn't U.S.Agent's shield be the crappy one the government gave him? That thing isn't durable at ALL.

Could have been a one-shot tie-in as opposed to dragging this story out for a tie-in miniseries instead. This also sort of felt more obligatory to pad out the "Devil's Reign" event instead of telling an organic story. But since this was suggested reading as part of the Krakoa era of X-Men, I gave it a shot and boy can I say this was not at all required reading. The basic gist of this tie-in miniseries is that Emma Frost's history with the Hellfire Club catches up to her now that Wilson Fisk is cracking down on superheroes in New York. There is a fun connection between Emma and Elektra that is brought up, and overall I thought there were some solid ideas in here. The story was stretched way too thin though, and aside from some entertaining interactions between Emma and various other Marvel characters, there wasn't all that much to enjoy with Devil's Reign: X-Men.

A tie-in to the DARK REIGN story of Wilson Fisk as Mayor of New York. Here, it states that Emma Frost used to be the pawn of Wilson Fisk and helping him control the city during his heyday during the Eighties. I'm not sure how I feel about this because while I could imagine the Kingpin as being a member of the Hellfire Club, I barely buy Sebastian Shaw as in control of Emma Frost let alone Wilson. She basically shows why she could have taken over the entirety of the world with her powers as is. Still, seeing her team up with Elektra is interesting and I quite enjoyed the whole premise of her trying to help a little girl get to safety.

I feel a little lost as to what is anchoring Fisk to these narratives, much as I’m enjoying this version of him (though…gang boss as political leader seems played at this point). The stuff with Emma is fairly compelling too, but the Winter Soldier issue felt bland and so specific to a narrative I have no prior knowledge of that I’m not sure I got much out of it. Not sure how much, if any more, I’ll read out of this crossover event.

This volume felt unnecessary, which usually happens with Marvel crossover events. It's not bad, just not essential. We get an interesting Emma Frost story showing her connection to Kingpin and Elektra goes way back. Then we get a Winter Soldier story that really has nothing to do with Devil's Reign past the Kingpin is involved. To me, this felt like Marvel just wanted an X-Men story for Devil's Reign, and this is what we got.

Comic book event tie-ins are, y’know… comic book event tie-ins, but after reading Gerry Duggan’s Marauders Emma Frost is one of my favorite mutants so I came back to read his writing of the character again and it was pretty dope.

The Winter Soldier issue they tagged on to the end so they could up the price tag on the trade has nothing to do with anything but it’s not bad.

The Emma story that makes up most of this book is fun and enjoyable if mostly irrelevant in terms of plot or character development.

The Winter Soldier one shot is probably on par with how his book is written? (Does he even have his own book these days?) But it's so angsty and text heavy and boring that I cba to read past the 3rd page. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I came here for the X-Men anyways.

The Dark Reign retread I've not read gets linked to the least Krakoan of the Krakoa books, with minimal profit to either. Still, it's not actively damaging either, which is more than can be said of the Winter Soldier one-shot making some attempt to pad this still slender volume, and which subjects poor Bucky to another round of 'everything you know is wrong'.
