Derek Landy is an Irish writer and screenwriter. In addition to the bestselling children's/YA series of Skulduggery Pleasant books, a supernatural mystery series starring Skulduggery Pleasant, a skeleton detective, and Valkyrie Cain, a young female magician, he has written two screenplays that have been made into films: the IFTA award winning "Dead Bodies" and the IFTA nominated "Boy Eats Girl". Landy himself was nominated for an IFTA for Best Script.

He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List.

Derek plays too many video games, reads too many comics, and watches too many movies. He lives in Ireland with too many cats. Occasionally he talks to real people, but only when he absolutely has to.

"You're going to kill [superheroes and super-villains]?!" -- Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man

"I'd like to find a more gentle euphemism but . . . pretty much." -- antagonist Veronica Eden

Concise and brisk storyline featuring the two flagship characters - or, as an opening tagline nicely reminds readers that 'Over the years they have been fellow Avengers, friends, and occasional foes . . . but always HEROES!' . . . taking on both a quippy 'government agent-turned-HYDRA provocateur' (as described on the rear-cover blurb) named Eden AND an upstart wannabe superhero group called the Paladins. Of course Cap is his usual stalwart and stand-up self, while 'Shellhead' is smarmy and smooth, so no big surprise there. But one of the more memorable aspects was giving both sets of their adversaries some needed shades of grey in their personalities - neither Eden or the Paladins were unequivocally evil in that overblown villain sense, but their respective good intentions quickly and unfortunately set them down some questionable paths. Also, I get the idea that scribe Derek Landy had a fair amount of fun with penning Eden's dialogue and internal musings, because it was a cut above the usual speech balloon / thought box wording for a character who always seemed just a moment away from uttering something sly like "I'm not a villainess . . . but I play one on TV."

Picks up after the end of Landy's Falcon & Winter Soldier series. Veronica Eden from that series escapes custody and Cap and Shellhead happen to be on the scene. Then a bunch of crazy things happen because they keep trusting Eden when she's completely untrustworthy. Not as much fun as the Falcon & Winter Soldier book but solid.

This was a fascinating read for sure!

Cap and Tony are investigating this woman Veronica Eden and we find her connection with Tony and well then the face off vs this new foe only to find she might not be that bad and then the twists explained as they have to go after the guy "51" and his team of heroes called the Paladins (from Initiative era) and then the face-off with the bad guy of some old Iron man story and his supreme entity "The Overseer" and its all explained well here and thw twists and turns which leads to an epic fight for both Tony and Steve and it will change a lot of things for these 2 friends going forward!

Its really well written and I loved it, its one of those books that make syou appreciate the characters a lot more and the writer does a great job of highlighting what makes these characters so unique and different but best friends and he does it really well and the bad guys are awesome and the twists omg so well done and does well to set up a sequel with an amazing ending. One of my favorite reads this year!

Iron Man and Captain America unite when Veronica Eden escapes custody and attempts to use an ancient AI to take over the world. With the assistance of the Paladins, a run-off from the Fifty States Initiative, it looks like an open-and-shut case, until subterfuge and double crosses bring everything Cap and Tony believed into question.

Picking up on plot threads from Derek Landy's Falcon & Winter Soldier mini-series, Cap/Iron Man is a decent little superhero romp, but it has its fair share of problems. There's an overcrowding of characters, with most of the Paladins not really having much to do outside of one-liners and a final issue twist. There's also the fact that neither Cap nor Tony feel like this is a very personal story for them, even if Veronica is an old flame of Tony's - they're kind of superfluous to the story, you could almost swap them out for any other pair of heroes and it'd still be the same story. And as much as I like Veronica Eden as a character, the fact that all five issues are narrated from her point of view and not from Steve or Tony's at any point feels like a misstep.

Despite that, there's some fun to be had here. Landy's dialogue is as snappy and sarcastic as ever, and the moral ideas at the core of the story are worth turning over in your mind for a moment (even if they're the ravings of a nutcase). The artwork from Angel Unzueta is also a highlight, impressive on every page, highly detailed and full of life.

Hardly required reading, but if you read Landy's previous mini-series it's worth checking this one out for some continuation and closure.

Derek Landy and Angel Unzueta pair up two of the most popular Avengers for a Marvel miniseries. The book is narrated by Hydra agent Veronica Eden, recently on trial for her attempts to lead the terrorist group back to prominence. Broken out by the alien hero known as Fifty-One, Eden finds herself confronted by both Iron Man and Captain America. Tony and Steve have been tracking Eden, and must use her to find the rogue extraterrestrial. The cross-country chase unearths a dangerous AI, a group of overeager heroes, and a return of the Secret Empire armor. Landy attempts to write a spy thriller that shows how dangerous superhumans can be to the public at large. This whirlwind plot is based off at least four differing story threads, and features an unlikeable protagonist that fails to drum up sympathy for her plight. Unzueta does a better job with her pencils, doing a fine job in handling conversations, action and events, and splash pages with aplomb. The true highlight is the painted cover art from Alex Ross, which continues to capture realism and imagination in a single image. Captain America/Iron Man: Tne Armor and the Shield is a cash grab for Marvel that leaves readers with an empty stomach.

Cap and Iron Man have been through a lot together and separately. This book does a fair job of giving us those moments where the two can actually talk about what happened. Steve has to unpack his anger over the 'Hydra Cap' events. Tony has to face reality that he's been given a second chance...AGAIN and he genuinely feels the need to be better than he's been.

Meanwhile, we have Veronica Eden popping up. She's as slippery as ever with her plan within a plan... within a scheme and an agenda. She just wants to stay on top. Hydra was her goal, but goals can change.

Great read. Slightly 'wordy', but well paced. Alex Ross covers are always a treat too.

Bonus: the 52 Initiative callback. That thing will never go away
Bonus Bonus: Veronica Eden is like a goddamn eel. She has moves within moves

This was fun.

The artwork was pretty solid. Not hyper realistic or stylized but just your standard Marvel type of art. I do always find it corny when Cap is wearing his old style suit with the wings on the helmet, big red gloves, and red cuffed boots but whatever.

The story itself and dialogue is a little bit of a throwback to early Marvel. The plot is simplistic with villains claiming to have better plans to help the world than the heroes who are supposedly the true bad guys. The good guys need to be monitored. And so we have the heroes clashing with the villains (or are THEY the good guys?) and misunderstandings ensue. The dialogue is witty and fun but if somebody in real life spoke to you that way, it'd be pretty cheesy.

So overall, I had fun with it. But I love Iron Man and Captain America so don't go out of your way if you aren't already sold on these two characters.

I always love the banter between Steve and Tony. They're too staunchly different characters who shouldn't get along as much as they do, and yet, there are several runs and storylines that are built upon the alliance and eventual friendship between the two. They have very different approaches to things and different ideals, but it all comes back to protecting people. It's nice to get a callback to the classic characters that doesn't feel dated or out of character. And I can never resist an Alex Ross cover. While the details and backstory of the plot may require me to do a little back-reading, I saw this run to the end.

Avengers Team-Up!

I like the team-up between Iron Man and Captain America in this book. This book picks up after the end of Derek Landy's Falcon and the Winter Soldier when Cap and Iron Man investigate Veronica Eden after she escapes from custody. In the beginning of the series, it is revealed that Eden has a connection to Tony Stark as he is the one that got her a position in S.H.I.E.L.D, not knowing she would end up being an agent of Hydra.

This book shows how Steve and Tony are going through their own problems since Secret Empire and Civil War and their mutual devotion to their own specific styles of heroics.

I didn't much care for the story. It's a simple, and it calls back to Fifty States Initiative, something I don't actually care about in any way. There are characters who spend the majority of the miniseries just standing around. However, Landy makes the interesting choice to have the entire series narrated by slippery villain Veronica, a choice that actually paid off for me. Veronica has a perspective and goals and a reason for what she does, which makes her a much more interesting antagonist, especially because she expresses herself very well in her narration.

Solid adventure about collusion between factions that want to pit Hydra and SHIELD against each other for fun and profit. The main draw here is the interaction between Tony and Steve, and Landy finds plenty for the friends to banter about while he makes the unfolding story seem effortless.

It doesn’t quite rise to the quality of the best Batman/Superman team-ups in World’s Finest, but it’s a solid attempt, and a nice change of pace from the two heroes being antagonistic towards each other the way they’ve been for pretty much the entirety of this century so far.

So glad this follows on from Landy's Falcon And The Winter Soldier and continues on the bad guys storyline!
Also really liked seeing Steve and Tony talk, even if it wasn't for long, the two usually never do so it was nice to see them reflect on what's happened to them in the past and reassure each other.
TW for mentions of nazi's, violence, explosions, mentions of murder, manipulation.

Blockbusting

Great dialogue pace and exposition, felt like Tony and the cap had good animation in speech and art. Nice standalone with its place in the universe. Fun little excursion, if i had to critique anything the end was a little clipped, but a nice investment and not at all a disappointment from Skullduggery's mind father.

At times I felt like I was struggling to get through this, but at its core it was pretty good. It picks up right after The Falcon and Winter Soldier series, which I haven't read, so I found myself having to play catch up.

Overall it's a somewhat complex story with twists and turns. If you're a fan of the characters, it's worth a read.

Nice Alex Ross cover, interesting choice to make Stark seem so much smaller than Cap. A little call back to the first Avengers film. sort of smoothing the waters after a tremendous amount of flux and conflict. Easy ok read.

I really enjoyed this series. Maybe it's my love of bromance. Maybe it's my love for Veronica Eden. But I liked it a lot.

A fun little jaunt with some very cool art that shows off the connection between Tony & Steve. It’s not the most astonishingly memorable comic ever written, but it is an easy, breezy read.
